GARMIN GSD24

Does anyone have any experience or exposure to the Garmin GSD24 ?

Apparently comes highly recommended from Gil Travis of Semperfi Fishing who is a regular contributor to the US Forum The Hull Truth. He claims one of his favourites to be the Furuno FCV585 with 1KW transducer but he believes the Garmin to be a bit better. I've seen several screen shots one of which was tracking solid bottom in 1600 ft at 27 mph. There is also a good slideshow at this link -http://www.planetseafishing.com/catchreports/read/garmin-gsd-24-testing

Anyone used or seen this "black box" which hooks up to their MFD units ?

thanks

warnbro sound sunday

Anyone out there have any areas to fish in warnbro sound........... is it better to stay in close, or travel out to five fathom, we are putting the boat in at port kennedy, i think cockburn will be far to busy................ there seems to be a lot of water about 20 meters deep before the five fathom, i dont want exact areas, i will try to find them for myself, but was just after some local knowledge, wont be able to get out till about 9am........

squid cockburn sound

Hi I am going squidding on monday with the old mans runabout I was going to try in front of the old power station is this a good spot never have tried squidding before.

Does the price of jigs equate to catch numbers and are certain colurs or weights better than others ?

SW Beach closed due to Orca and White

Had a phone call from a local surfer today reporting that Yallingup beach was closed in the AM of Friday 28th Sep due to a Orca(killer whale) and a Great White being spotted just beyond the waves. The Beach has remained closed. Amazing to hear both species in such a close vicinity to eachother.

cheers,

glossey muliti coloured pages in fishing magazines

Just got home with the latest edition of a west australian fishing magaziine and am i angry the editors of these things must be in their 40s-50s how do i know that.Because if you are older than that you have no bloody hope of reading the text in their magazines. When you are getting to your senior years one of the great things to look forward to is your eye sight is going to be not as good as it used to be (no I don't need a labrador dog yet) and despite having a good pair of reading glasses i'm damed if i can read some of the print on the glossy multi coloured pages some of these magazines use. I f they don't care about the senior section of the population just put a warning on the cover of the magazine for seniors and i'll save my money and buy a mag that i can read. And a few captions on the photos mightn't go astray (appologies if they are there it's just that i can't see them either.

Jigging Master Drag Washer Upgrade for Daiwa Electric reels.

Theres no doubt Super Deep fishing is becoming very popular and so is the use of electric reels. Daiwa is a popular brand and one we use ourselves out there but standard drag smoothness and longevity isnt very good. Since Ryan ugraded his Daiwa electric reel with the JM electric drag washers we wont recommend anything else. We have been upgrading our customers reels with great feedback also.

These washers are ultra smooth, last a longtime, work well when the washers are hot or if water is on the drag washers so basically no more sticky drag. JM Electric Drag washers suits 750 & 1000 models including Megatwins.

i have attached photos of my transducer which created rooster tails and from a previous discussion on how to solve this problem i made up the following plate around the transducer as a trial as with my transducer being mounted lower than recomended to ensure i get a clear picture at any speed , the front edge of the transducer is well clear of the rear of the transom and so i cut out a plate of alli which i was able to mount flush to the underside of the hull which allows the water to run over the tranny face and cuts down the amount of water the goes over the top edge and creating the rooster tail

Swell predictions - who to trust?

Tomorrow night the swell on Seabreeze is predicted to be 2.6m on seabreeze but on Willy Weather it is predicted to be 1.6m. Who is most accurate and who should i trust?

Cheers

Do you think GW's are still endangered?

Obviously a topical point today? If you think they aren't endangered, should they remain protected and why?

Marine Safety - Radio's

Hi guys,

Quick question - excuse my stupidity, i don't have a lot of knowledge about radio's. I have tried to google this and couldn't really find the answer.

The Marine Safety site advises:

"A marine radio must be carried if operating more than 5 miles from the mainland shore or more than 1 mile from an island located more than 5 miles from the mainland shore. The radio can be 27 MHz, VHF or HF. "

It doesn't list UHF as an acceptable radio. Im guessing this is because UHF is too high a frequency and as such has a shorter range which isn't acceptable for boating?

To provide some context, I have all required marine safety equipment for my 4mtr tinny except for a radio. I am looking to buy a handheld radio so I can venture out to the five fathom when weather permits. Most of the UHF units come in pairs which would also be handy for camping etc. However the VHF models seem to only come with one hand held so it would probably just stay on the tinny.

Shark cull to go ahead.

Government have just put up 2 million for fisheries to catch and kill any shark caught too close to shore .

Heading up this break and was wondering if anyone could reccommend a charter up this way, and what prices I would expect to pay??

Name five things on your fishing bucket list

My five 'fishing bucket list' things are:

1.  Dhufish (keeper) on jig or plastic (hopefully won't wait too long to cross that off)

2.  Cobia

3.  Bag limit of squid (never got close to bagging out!)

4.  Dollie at the FADS

5.  My first real fishing trip with my (now) 17 yr old son and (now) 8 yr old son to Steep Point.  An all boys week of remote camping and fishing.  The 17 yr old is ready to go now.  Just waiting for the young'un to develop his fishing passion!

Leaving boat running while fishing

Just wondering what are your thoughts of leaving the boat running while drifting bottom bashing?

My brother reckons it scares the fish, but I always leave my boat running on short drifts. N yep he's coming on my boat fishing this weekend so if he doesn't catch anything he always says I left the boat running.

Any of you feel it makes any difference?

Thanks

Finally on the water!!

Hi guys,

I don't normally create topics for help but im calling on all you experienced skippers to point me in the right direction with boating.  I've finally bought my first boat and would really appreciate some advice with it. The pictures of my new rig are below. It has a 02 Yamaha outboard (40hp) and the boat size is a small 4.6m. Its small but its a size im comfortable to start with.

How far off land do any of you think is realistically safe to go fishing? I'm guessing with this size boat to go anywhere other than cockburn sound and the river i need a pretty flat do where conditions are good? Any info on swell sizes etc will be really appreciated.

I'm located NOR and my nearest boat ramp is Ocean reef.

Thankyou very much in advance to anyone helping.

P.s. for now it has all saftey equipment minus an epirb.

Rod & Reel: Set-up Advice

 Hey all,

Long time viewer of the forum, newish poster.  So please don't bite.

I have seen a lot of valuable advice here & waiting for my questions to pop up and be answered.  But if I'm after specifics, I thought I'd bite the bullet and shoot through my own topic about a new fishing set-up.

I am new to the boating world, after just purchasing a 520 Genesis Sports, and am so keen to expand the ways I can fish & what I can catch!  The only problem is that there is so much gear out there tailored to specific methods, areas, depths etc.  That I need a push in the right direction, so please, share your own personal opinions about what you use, what for, how much it cost & what would you do differently.

My personal goals? I will continue to beach fish from time-to-time with my existing set-ups.  I want to purchase a new one now though to head out on the boat.  I don't want to limit myself to bottom-bashing, nor trolling.  Something that I can flick a bait, lure to a zone or drop down to try score a snapper.  My budget would be $400-500 (rod, reel, line).  I'm happy to go cheaper of course, if you find that the quality doesn't improve all that much from a $200-300 set-up.

Please share your opinions.  I've been doing a lot of research and would like to see if that correlates.  If you have any questions of me, please ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Slap.

Night Fishing advise

Hi all, going to pick your brains again as i am new to just about everything.

Im looking to head out friday night around 9 pm and do a deep drop (50ks off rockingham). Im wondering what determines the fish biting apart from the tides? are they just as likely to bite during the night as they are during the day?

If anyone has any advise, tips or handy hints please share as they will be greatly appreciated as i am new to night fishing.

Cheers in advance!!
