Decent beach/steep point spin rod?

Hey guys,

Can anyone suggest a middle to high end LB rod that i could use as a beach rod and future steep point rod? Will be paired with an 6000-8000 size reel and want to be able to cast up to 100 or so grams. Already have a 12ft heavy beach rod so wanting something more easily handled for throwing slices etc all day.

Thanks for any input

Chris

Any info would be good

New to offshore fishing

Many thanks to Andy Mac for showing me the pleasures of catching a decent fish. Got on a Sambo (amongst others) , biggest fish id ever caught much to his hilarity but support (only 4kg but dont have a boat). We caught and tagged a lot on an awesome day so learned a lot about preservation. Ive finally worked out what you guys are on about! Still pumped a week later :) Cheers Andy, Brian

Rod and reel advice

I'm looking to get another rod to add to the collection.  I have my bream rod, my 8-12kg snapper rod, and my 15-25kg overhead combos.

I want something for bottom bashing, trolling, jigging etc.  my current overheads are star drag.  And quite frankly shit.

Im thinking I should be getting something around the 15kg rating, overhead, with a lever drag. I'm guessing level wind.  Do I want a roller tip or standard guides?

ive got about $200ish for rod and reel.  Plus braid.

What rod/reel would you opt for and what line?

cheers folks

Summer sambo jigging

Well I fly back out for work tomorrow for another two week swing and by the time I get home the demersal ban will be in place. I've taken a big interest in jigging in the last 6 months or so, but with the demersal ban looming, I'm not sure where to start targetting sambos. Can anyone point me in the right direction or perhaps even give me some gps marks. This isn't a question I'd normally ask, but as its sambos and not prized table fish I guess it's a bit different. Any help would be appreciated. Feel free to pm. Cheers

Only a few more weeks till cray season

Will be hitting the crays again this year, hoping to have some time off at the end of Nov.

How many others will be chasing the crays.

Willing to Trade??? GPS spots

Moving back down to the semi-big smoke - namely Mandurah.

I am fully ware of the GPS protection.

What I was wondering is whether anyone moving up to Kcity/Dampier was willing to trade a few good beginners GPS spots. I am not talking the best ones (you wont get mine) but a few spots to get started, so that when you go down or up you have a few sure fire spots. I have 3 on offer.

What we call Snapper City - gauranteed a feed and the odd Coral trout and a few Reds in shallow water. Full of Blue lines and Spangies. Normally get our feed in 30m max.

Hot spot - caught 15 different species on this one in 1 day, and there dont include non keepers and sharks.

The reef - Coral trout every time. Platics best, but even caught by the Mrs and she only like Squid as bait. If I am bait fishing use mulies only, but plackies bomb the area.

These spots arent our best, but whilst learning the in's and outs are a great way to start.

Cheers

Neels

I have some Perth/Rotto spots, but never had a big boat out of Mandurah, so limited. I am into exploring and love nothing better than finding your own ground, but times would be limited due to FIFO Dr's duties.

Sounder image

Took the kids out whale watching in Dunsbourough last week.

Cant get much better than this close encounter.

They hung around and under the boat for 15 mins. Kids were shit scared at first then they relaxed to enjoy the experience.

Before you ask the whales came to us. Motor off and we could not move until they decieded they had enough playing with us.

Can I get a fish Id on the sounder shot please. Laughs!!!!!!!!

Abrolhos first time report

So on Thursday I went on the charter you may have seen in the for sale section, with mate Ryan and new found mate Lyndon. The trip was a scoopon overnight charter, the twist you had to fly to Wallabi Island (flight was $296 return from Gero and scoopon $245 included meals, bait and sinkers). We headed over 9 am and were on the boat rigging up 40 minutes later. The boat was a reasonale size with heaps of shade, and there were two deckies plus captain and only seven of us on the boat (max 12, min 6). They had a tender as well (which was not used on our trip for fishing).

The flight across wasa real highlight, the views spectacular, and the speed and comfort really helped us out on such a short trip.

High hopes held for all, 10 kg luggage a challenge (rods not included)

Plenty of great aerial views, also heaps of whales spotted on way across

Pretty sure above is the East Wallabi Island with air strip and the jetty and boat at the end.

Wallabi Island Air strip

air strip about 50 m away from awaiting boat

On to the fishing. As the boat rarely goes back to Gero, supplies limited. Travel is about 8 knots, which can be seen as tedious or a great opportunity to troll. I go with the latter. As someone who does not get away much for fishing trips, with a young family, the two day trip was ideal. Trolling to the first spot, was stoked when my 190 red/white halco DD went off and pleased to bring in my first ever shark mackerel, first fish on the troll on my talica 8 which was great.

Ryan likes my style and grabs my outfit and puts it back out and is hooked up big time on something much more substantial. Colour is seen near the boat and it is a big spaniard (40 lb thrown out as a guess), but then the poor fella gets pinged on the tender. From then on tender pulled out of the way and the red head is the lure of choice for most.

We Ryan gets on to three shark mackeral, I get two more spaniards.

It is at this point I wonder why Ryan keeps running towards the camera every time we have photos taken, more to come on this. Lyndon also hooks up and pulls in a great yellow fin tuna

We get to a spot and fish with a little success, the other fellas land a 2m FAT bronze whaler shark and a few other fish come over the side, nothing too special.

Short troll to mooring for lunch of shark makeral and snags. At the mooring they say you can fish, I am dubious put drop over in shallow coral water, and baldies about size come over, so I change over to the light gear and we have fun landing red throats, baldies and chinamen. I was stoked to land my first coral trout on the light stuff.

We troll for a long time and fish a last spot which starts off slow but approaching sunset starts getting going and some reasonable baldies, a few dhuis, pinkies and more red throat come over the side. I think the second fish is a spangled emperor, feel free to correct me, I sent it back nonethelesss.

We trolled back to the mooring and was the first time we saw birds really diving and other fellas dropped a big mackie by the boat and immediately after Ryan straightened a treble on a big strike, cursing not upgrading trebles.

Despite the hot action we went back to moor for the night in fading light, a little disappointing but understandable.

Dinner was pinky, baldie and red throat with some tasty steak, few ales and happy campers. Early to bed on air mattresses on a big deck, comfortable but wind picked up considerably in the late arvo and next day was very hard to fish deepish.

Bacon and egg sangers in the morning and off to where we were the night before, for some success - reasonable baldies, I landed double header red throat, but blown off the spot quickly in tough conditions, though boat was quite comfortable and dry.

Trolling back to the mooring, stopping at many spots on the way for limited success, Lyndon thought he had a horse of a spaniard, and most were surprised to see a good sambo come up.

Back at the mooring day before some better fish came up with better sizes, I was happy to see a bigger dhui come up after a smaller one.

Then a real highlight as Ryan hooked up to pull up his first size dhui. We took this photo.

Both dhufish are the same cms in lenght, can you pick the guy standing closer? Ryan most pleased with his photo barging tactics, and super stoked with his first size dhui.

We had back to the jetty and pack and fillet, into the plane at 2pm, back in the car at 2:45pm back to Perth.

A quick trip, but a great trip. Abrolhos was a great place to see and fish, enhanced by aerial view. The charter made it comfortable and easy. While they weren't the best charter I have been on (limited rigging, sinkers and bait, some supplies weren't delivered (not the charters fault) so lacking coffee cups and a few minor things), we had a great time and were happy with the quality and range of fish we caught. Would have loved a few huge demersals, but could not fault the range of species. Also one person went down with sea sickness and one of the two deckies was left with them on the island with the tender. This limited the decky support, but was great not to see someone suffer, and the tender out of the way helped in tough conditions).

The swell was supposed to be over 3.5 m the first day and was not noticed at all, the wind up to 20 knots the second day was a hinderance, though there were bays that could be fished.

Fun times had by all.

Lost - Aluminium Fly Box on the Donnelly River

Hi guys I was fishing on the Donnelly today down around One Tree Bridge for Trout and dropped an aluminium fly box ( obviously without noticing) Its fairly old, slightly out of shape with quite a few of my streamer flies in it. If anyones down that way and finds a Perrine flybox with foam inserts and flies I'd appreciate a pm. Unless another fisher uses flies it would otherwise prove a useless piece of fishing paraphenalia.

Anyway just thought I'd put it out there. BTW can anyone let me know which stores are stocking trout gear / flies these days - its been a bloody long time since I needed to replace this many in one hit of specific patterns. Thanks for you help in advance.

Caught a WHALE and couple of GB Cods

Not sure if this has happened to anyone before .... certainly first to me! but we had a HB whale passing under the tub, and then running into our lines in 250m of water! Wouldn't like to imagine if that would've been anchor rope (not that were on anchore).

Oh well, here gone 100s of meters of Boat Braid!

Just a warning, so be careful out there, so many of them ... great to watch, but nasty to hook into

exmouth landbased

here are some holiday pics of our landbased stuff from all our walking and throwing poppers and metals, sorry for the sideways shots

metal lures single hooks

Say for something like a 40gram Twisty I am thinking of a Siwash hook of either 4/0 or 5/0. I think the 4/0 is ok but will the 5/0 throw it out of balance at all? Using lure for tailor and salmon.

Cleaning station/ trough

interesting stories

After seeing the name just1morecast it got me thinking what are some memoriable moments from fishing trips and saying the fateful words just one more cast that comes to your mind weather it be good or bad. Mine would be fishing at Port Smith in a cove and I just kept saying one more cast, after awhile I thought nope getting late gotta go so packed up my stuff headed back threw the mangroves only to find the tide had come in around the island well it was just on sunset and i had to wade threw roughly 50 meters of water in the deepest part it got up to my armpits, I learnt a valuable lesson that day about how quick the tide comes in when your fishing northern waters lol didn't catch any fish either.

Tips for north mole?

Thinking of heading down to the north mole tomorrow morning for some bread and butter fish you know- whiting herring or a nice lizard! Or some squid if there's any around!Never fished there before so I don't know what side or how far along to go any tip would be appreciated!!

I'm using bait but can't get my hands on burley

Couple of Fish from the River

 Hey fellas

Decided to go for a fish this morning, headed to the ramp and it was blowing a gale! Strong winds so headed home and had a second try at about 12. Went around towards fremantle, burleyed up and found a small school of skippy. Weren't huge but were encouraging signs after being mauled by blowies in the previous weeks. Caught 8 in an hour and lost 3 at the boat when lifting in, and many other hookups that didn't eventuate. Trolled some bibbed minnows for tailor but didn't get a hit. Anyway it was a good day out on the water which has restored my confidence that there are fish other than blowies in the river haha.

(No idea why the pictures have turned 90 degrees left...)

Cheers

Samson fish ID

Caught these two fish on different days South of Rotto. Can anyone confirm they are both samson fish despite the different appearance? One was caught around noon on an overcast day and the other was caught late afternoon which explains the difference in colours perhaps. I think picture 1 is a samson fish but not sure about the other fish.

Mindarie Osprey Family

A couple of pics of the resident Osprey family who have improved on the Waneroo council creativity in art. Let's hope it stays that way. I took these this arvo and the mother was obviously letting the little fellas have a doze while keeping a close eye on them. In the morning both male and female were in and out of the nest feeding rodents.

Out boating.... Not fishing

G'day guys!

Went out "fishing" yesterday out back of rotto to a few marks my mate had given me. He said they were ship wrecks and sea containers that had fallen in the water. It was pretty swelly and windy but still went out.... Benefits of a 25 foot boat.... Out it about 100 m of water and couldn't locate a single bump, rise, hole, structure.... Nothing. After 2 hours of searching and a couple of pointless drops we came back in closer to rotto. There we found a few lumps that but drift after drift we were getting hammered by small fish and pulling up Sargent baker (which were then cut up and put on hooks) but so decent fish at all!! This is about the 3rd trip in a row I've been out fishing and came home empty handed. Must be looking in the wrong areas...

My point of the post is to ask whether there is better ground hillaries side of rotto or south side? I fish south side and as the post suggests, I don't do very well! Haha

Cheers

New Toy

Now all i need is the rod to match

The best offshore plastics stick

Hey guys, wondering what everyone was using as offshore placcy sticks? Im using a 7ft 15-25lb samurai at the moment and I'm certain there is something better, maybe 6'6? softer action? Your opinions would be great!
