Starting a boat with dead batteries
Submitted by Stiff Ripples on Wed, 2007-06-06 21:32Was interested to know if the batteries are dead flat on the boat are you still able to pull start the engine (mines a 90hp)?
I've heard you can also overide the automatic timing on the engine aswell so that it idles faster avoiding the engine stalling in the case of an emergency.
True?

Who uses artificial baits for bottom bashing?
Submitted by jimbo1 on Mon, 2007-06-04 21:13Just wondering who uses artificial baits for bottom bashing for instance Berkley power grubs or the rubber squids. Or do you prefer to just use bait on its own? Just that I have noticed a few pics lately where people have used them! Do they realy make that much difference to your catch rate.

Midnight joke
Submitted by dogsoldier on Sun, 2007-06-03 00:29A motorcycle officer stops a man for running a red light. The guy is a real jerk and comes running back to the motor officer. The violator demands
to know why he is being harassed by the Gestapo! So the officer calmly tells
him of the red light violation. The "Motorist" instantly goes on a tirade,
questioning the officer's ancestry, sexual orientation, etc., in rather
explicit terms. The officer, being a professional, takes it all in stride,
figuring "battleship mouth and rowboat ass".
The tirade goes on without the cop saying anything. When he gets done
with writing the citation he puts an "AH" in the lower right corner of the
narrative portion of the citation. He then hands it to the "Violator"
for his signature.
The guy signs the cite angrily, tearing the paper, and when presented
his copy points to the "AH" and demands to know what it stands for.
The officer then removes his mirrored sunglasses, gets in the middle of the guy's
face and said, "That's so when we go to court, I'll remember you're an asshole!"
Three months later they are in court. The "Violator" has such a bad record
he is about to lose his license and has hired an attorney to represent him.
On the stand the officer testifies to seeing the man run the red light.
Under cross-examination, the defense attorney asks, "Officer, is this a
reasonable facsimile of the citation you issued my client?"
Officer responds, "Yes sir, this is the defendant's copy, his signature
and mine, same number at the top."
Attorney: "Officer, is there any particular marking or notation on this
citation you don't normally make?"
Officer: "Yes sir, in the lower right corner of the narrative there is
an AH', underlined."
Attorney: "What does the AH stand for, officer?"
Officer? "Aggressive and Hostile, Sir."
Attorney: "Aggressive and hostile?"
Officer: "Yes, Sir?"
Attorney: "Officer, are you sure it doesn't stand for Asshole?"
Officer: "Well, Sir, you know your client better than I do!"

***ANNOUNCEMENT *** NOR v SOR Comp Postponement - New date 9th June 2007
Submitted by Andy Mac on Wed, 2007-05-23 20:14After much discussion with the SOR hosts for the first leg of the NOR v SOR comp we have decided in the best interests of everyone being able to organise their weekends with a bit of forewarning, to postpone the SOR leg to 9th June. The weather this weekend is looking decidedly woefull and local knowledge suggests that a strong southerly combined with a 3m plus swell will not be conducive to an enjoyable day on the water. Whilst the sound may have presented a viable alternative, this is a blue water event and our strong preference is to have it as such.
It is unfortunately impossible to satisfy everyone with a substitite date however I have received several PM's from skippers who cannot make the 2nd due to long weekend activities and accordingly we have elected to target the 9th June instead. NOR comp will be the 16th June.
Those who have already paid their entry donations for the SOR event will be reimbursed if you cannot make the actual day. A reminder that all entry donations go straight to the prize pool anyway.
At this stage I can confirm the following prize pool is on offer over the three rounds:
Main perpetual trophy and huge bragging rights for the overall champion angler over the three legs (South/North/Swan).
Trophy for champion angler SOR event
Trophy for champion angler NOR event
2 x Fishwrecked shirts
2 x Fishwrecked tanktops
2 x Fishwrecked beanies
$500 worth of tackle vouchers courtesy of Oceanside Tackle & Marine O'Connor
$500 worth of tackle vouchers courtesy of Compleat Angler Rockingham
$250 towards more vouchers or specific tackle courtesy of Mandurah Pest Control
$250 worth of tackle vouchers courtesy of Compleat Angler Joondalup
share of a $100 cash prize for best fish photo/movie posted from the events featuring a fishwrecked beanie. (That's $50 for each comp North and South.)
4 x $25 vouchers for a "Great Steak" meal at Hogsbreath Cafe Mindarie
Voucher for a deep tissue massage courtesy of our very own Alfred
Several cleaning equipment packages valued at approx $100 each
And the list is still growing.
Allocation of the prizes to species categories will be done on the days of the comp based on what is weighed in. We are hopeful of having an even spread of prizes between the comps but this is still a little up in the air as new sponsors come on board and add to the prize pool and entry donations in the NOR comp are added to the prize pool as well.
Apologies on behalf of the organising comittee for the postponement but in the interests of safety (even though this is an enter at your own risk event) and in the interests of trying to satisfy the majority of anglers the SOR event will now be held on 9th June weather permitting.
This is a "read only" thread so please place any comments on one of the existing NOR v SOR threads here:

Perth's future boating facilities
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2007-05-23 14:59Study identifies Perth’s future boating facilities.
Compromise will be needed if the metropolitan coastline is to accommodate growing demand for recreational boating facilities, while protecting marine and coastal environments.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today released the draft Perth Recreational Boating Facilities Study.
“Western Australians clearly like boats as there are more than 85,000 registered recreational vessels in WA with about 46,000 of them based in the metropolitan area,” Ms MacTiernan said.
“Today there are about 30 boats per thousand people in Perth, compared to 21 only 15 years ago, and the study estimates there will be more than 40 per 1000 people in 2025 when the number of craft will exceed 80,000.
“Not only are boat numbers increasing, their average size is also growing, creating increasing demand for permanent moorings.
“Over the next 20 years, we will need a major increase both in boat ramps and boat pens along the 120km coastline between Two Rocks and Singleton.
“There will have to be compromise if we are to satisfy both the boat owners and those who give coastal protection their highest priority, to ensure we make the best decisions for the future.”
Ms MacTiernan said that the draft study recommendations included:
• maximising the capacity of existing harbours and facilities, including redeveloping Jervoise Bay (Woodman Point) boat launching harbour, more boat pens at Two Rocks, Mindarie, Hillarys and Fremantle boat harbours and increasing moorings at yacht clubs;
• within the next decade, constructing a boat launching harbour near Fremantle, a marina at Mangles Bay (Rockingham) and possibly the Eglinton Marina;
• commencing detailed planning for new facilites to be constructed after 2015, including a new harbour at Ocean Reef and a Hillarys-style boat harbour at Alkimos); and
• increasing the number of boat ramp lanes on the coast from 44 to 76.
“We are continuing to consult with the community on general coastal planning and development issues as well as on specific projects,” the Minister said.
“The draft study is being discussed at two coastal planning seminars which include representatives of the recreational boating sector, community members and other stakeholders.
“We have also begun a survey of 5,000 people, including 2,000 Fremantle residents, selected at random to participate in a survey to test attitudes and preferences towards future development of the Fremantle boat harbours.
“There have been no significant changes to the infrastructure at the boat harbours for more than 20 years, but pressure is building for additional facilities for both recreational and commercial vessels and for people visiting the area.”
Ms MacTiernan said the boating facilities study would contribute to the Perth Coastal Planning Strategy, which would establish guidelines for land use and development along the metropolitan coast.
The draft Perth Recreational Boating Facilities Study and information about the Fremantle Harbours project is available from www.dpi.wa.gov.au/imarine/1131.asp, or by contacting the Department for Planning and Infrastructure on 9216 8295.
Information on the Perth Coastal Planning Strategy is available from http://www.wapc.wa.gov.au/perthcoast

Species List NOR v SOR comp
Submitted by Andy Mac on Mon, 2007-05-21 08:49Species Pts per Kg
Dhufish 25pts
Pinkie 55pts
Sand Whiting 1000pts
KG 200pts
Black Arse 250pts
Harlequin 250pts
Queenie 75pts
Red Snapper 500pts
Skippy 100pts
Leatherjacket 125pts
Flathead 175pts
Tuna Blue / Bonito 50pts
YF Tuna 15pts
Spanish Mac 25pts
Baldchin 100pts
Points based on the upper limit of a great catch for each species being worth around 500pts. For example a 20kg Dhuie would be worth 500pts and thats a great size for that species but equally a 9kg Pinkie would be classed as a great catch for that species and accordingly score around 500pts.
Champion boat will be total points for the boat divided by the number of anglers on board.
You only count your heaviest fish of each species in each fisherman's tally. So if you catch 2 Dhuies one of 5kg and one of 10kg you only count the heaviest fish. Obviously all catches must comply with bag and size limits or will be disqualified.
Tim has a copy of the spreadsheet and I will get a copy to each of the Northern crews. Also I will see if Adam can load up the sheet to the site so you can download before the comp.

How tough are Aussie men?
Submitted by Jody on Sun, 2007-05-20 23:07The scene is set - a dark night, cold wind blowing, campfire flickering,
stars twinkling in the dark sky.
Three crusty fishermen are sitting by the campfire, one from Australia,
one from Seth Efrika and one from New Zulland. Each embroiled in the
bravado for which they are famous.
The night of tales begins...
Kiven the Kiwi says, "I must be the meanest, toughest, fusharman there es.
Why, jist the other day I linded on a bunk and scared a crocodeale, who
came out of the swamp and ate sux min who were standen close by. I grebbed
the crocodeale and wristled him to du ground and killed em with my beer
hends"
Hansie from Seth Efrika who typically can't stand to be bettered said,
"Well you guys, I lended orfter a week in de tinny 200 miles oot,
and a Namibian snike slid out from under a rock and made a move on
me. I grebbed de borsted with me bare hinds and beet it's head off ind then
sucked the poison from it's body down in one gulp. End I'm still here
today"
Bazza the Aussie remained silent, slowly poking the fire with his penis.
