Cockburn Sound, Sunday 20th.
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Sun, 2008-07-20 18:03Just a few pics from out Kayaking trip into CS on Sunday morning. Our buddy Matt caught all 3 Pinkies, leaving us to clear all the annoying Herring and other fish away from his baits... He gave me and wifey one of the three for dinner, nice fella he is. Was a beautiful morning, and the new GPS proved it's worth, putting us right on a good patch. I managed to loose a good fish through a bit of over exhubiration (too keen) after attempting to souvenir it's jawbone by yanking it clean ouuta its face.. Lesson learnt, and i better man i be.
Enjoy.
Wifey on route.
Matt hooked up, concentrating hard.
The results.
Proud fisho, worth every second of fishless days for that one moment!
By the way, big thanx to Ryan for some solid advice, and Allan Mac for constant knowledge.

Prawn Platter
Submitted by Pete D on Tue, 2008-07-15 07:27Headed down to the river last night at short notice. My buddy Brad and myself being the only divers for the night. In the water at 6pm north of Bicton, our 2nd time at this location.
The old goolies retracted rapidly as usual with entry (hmm still got a leak in the suit) but I planned ahead with some 38 degree liquid release to counter the cold surface water entry.
Actually, once on the bottom the temperature was not that bad.
Anyway, nice sandy bottom out in the middle ground and plenty of prawns about. Crab numbers are still very good with plenty of sonkers about. With a bit of navigation confusion we both lost a bit of hunting time aswell but both ended up with close to 2kg of prawns.
Last nights effort from myself;
The platter;
Don’t know how big scallops get, but this is the best that I have seen – 125mm.
Cheers Pete

Moved out a bit deeper, and it was still slow going with a few pinks being caught.
We moved spots and started catching a few Leatherjackets, we lost about 5.
Still kept catching a few pinkies aswell as a few red snapper, Biggest was 3.2kg.
Fished to 5pm and came home with a feed

Todays Baldy
Submitted by feral1975 on Sun, 2008-07-13 19:14Left Woodies at 630 am and ventured in Mike's (aka Blowfish pro) cruisecraft for my day of expert guiding , had my laptop checking out some new charts. Things were pretty quiet except for the sand whiting , back into the laptop for some marks saw Mike land an undersize dhufish which after some technical dificulty was released , Finding some coral lumps we had drifted over a few times and had some small hits so the desion was made to drop anchor and burley, well the result speaks for itself , mikes 63cm of beautiful bald chin groper . Thanks for the opportunity mike
sorry about the blood

ANZAC Fishing
Submitted by Pete D on Fri, 2008-07-04 09:35I got an email from Soupster recently – he is doing it hard protecting us all on his way to a secret destination for naval exercises. “I combined with the Navigator and we hit the CO for a fish over Laywood Shoal (about a day west of Darwin). We trolled at seven knots, stopping as required. Sometimes we didn't even get back up to seven knots before stopping again due to another fish being caught. It was an awesome couple of hours. The CO was over the moon with how happy it made the crew, so I have no doubt that it will happen again.”
The fishing ship;
Soupster’s Spaniard
An unknown;
The motley lot;
The catch;
Keep it up Soupster. I sleep much better knowing you are out there protecting us.
Cheers Pete

Chrissy Island or other
Submitted by PilbaraBrad on Mon, 2008-06-30 12:21I am going to get the idea out there
I want to do a GT / Jigging trip somewhere a little different. I have been to chrissy island before but I didn’t get the same opportunity to have a fish as I would if I went there on a fishing trip (does that make sense)
Anyway, anyone who knows and likes GT fishing will know that this place goes off. I am going to start planning a trip over there for sometime next year and I am pretty sure Jay Burgess will want to come too. Going to extend the offer for maybe 1 or 2 others if they might be interested.
Like wise I am also interested in other peoples thoughts on a similar location for GT fishing and jigging for quality fish, looked at all the nomad charters and I think they will cost a mint however I am not ruling them out as of yet.
Your thoughts please

Submitted by shabba on Sat, 2008-06-21 21:13just got back from an awsome fishing trip in shark bay, we left perth last sat morn, we were on the boat (charter) by 5pm. we put all our fishing gear & booze on the boat, quick shower, then we all went 2 the pub 4 a few beers. sun morn we set of through steep point passage, we put some lures out the back, caught a few macs & tuna, then the wind come in about 30knots with 3m swell, so no more fishing 4 the day, we went and anchored up 4 the rest of the day in a bay. monday was a blow out 2, so mid day we went up on the inside of the reef 2 turtle bay. then the weather gods looked after us 4 the rest of the 3 days, i caught some awsome fish, got my pb on a red emp, it was 11.2kg and went 840 it was a thumper, aso caught cods, tuna, macs, trevallys,snapper,sharks,bauldys,sweetlip,goldbands spanglies etc. all in all it was an awsome trip with the lads, we had a ball. it was a great boat & the crew could not do enough 4 you, we went with aquajack. i will put some pics of my best catches, i also have on video the big red i caught, i will try & post that up 2.

MAGIC EXMOUTH
Submitted by Paul G on Tue, 2008-06-10 18:14Sorry it took so long to get this post up but he we go. Exmouth what can I say it’s a great place to catch some fish. Matthew (Mako magic) Jesse and I headed up to Exmouth for ten days of fishing, we left on the 25th of May with a stop over at Manillia roadhouse, the accommodation was nothing special, but it was good to have a shower and a good sleep. We got up early and had a good breakfast, and headed into Exmouth .We arrived in Exmouth at 8.30 felling refreshed and ready to catch some fish .After booking in at the Tandibidi caravan park ,and unloading the gear we headed of for some beach fishing. Not much was happening on the catching fish side off things, but nice to check the area out, we did see plenty of turtles and a shark cruising close to shore.
Day two and time to get the boat in the water we hit the ramp at first light and headed down the back of the reef, trolling for whatever was hungry, It didn’t tack long and the drag was buzzing lucking back to see a 10kg dolli in mid flight was awesome, the fish kept on coming with dolphin fish mackerel and tuna. We stopped after a couple off hours and had a bottom bounce on some small lumps I found the year before Matthews first to hit the bottom and bang a nice red emperor what a way to start we pulled fish up for the next couple of hours Trevally, emperor, blue lined emperor and many bottom fish we didn’t know the names off, now this is fishing we finished the day trolling for billfish with no luck but what a first day.
Day three what a beautiful sunrise as we trolled the back of the reef, the fish had shut down with only a small tuna for two hours, we stopped for some bottom bouncing, once again the bottom fish we going of.Trevally, emperor, shark, even mackerel we even got a slender sucker fish, not shore if that’s the right name or Jesse made it up,but an unusual catch. Headed back along the reef trolling towards Tandibidi and smash, lines were buzzing we all looked back to see three 10 kg dollies airborne, what a sight. We dropped one but got a great pic of the others then back to fight again. (Most of the fish on the trip were released in good condition) what an end to another a great day. We went to the light house for some fuel that afternoon, and arrived back to find we had done a wheel bearing on the trailer. So we made the trip to town and got another one. Ended up being a late one by the time the bearing was changed and the dinner was cooked we all hit the sack for a good nights sleep.
Day four getting Jesse out of bed was a bit of a chore but we were finally on our way. We had decided to give the trolling a good go, and hopefully get a billfish. We headed north of Tandibidi trolling in close to start, and then out deep on the way home. We got one nice Dollie 9kg and a small mackerel, and had a few good hits but didn’t hook up. We bumped into some whales frolicking in the deep, got some great movies of them tail slapping and jumping. (STILL NO BILLFISH). On the way in Matt hook a beautiful yellow fin tuna around 10 kg first one I’ve seen they are a nice looking fish and made for a great pic before release.
Day five trolling the back of the reef and only one dollie. As we neared the south passage all four rods we smashed by mackerel, two lures were bitten of and the others were lost in the fight. We circled the area with no further hits. Other than a nice five foot shark witch gave Matt a great fight. Another stop for bottom bouncing and Jesse came up with the goods a nice coral trout at 6.5kg. Other fish caught were Trevally coronation cod,emperor and many other fish. Another troll on the way back with a couple more dollies and a barracuda.
Day six was very much the same got a couple of mackerel some dollies, the fish just seemed to be endless. We bottom bounced out in 100 meters, but the drift was to fast. We had one fish come up with all its scales roughed up, thinking we had pull the fish from the reef being the reason for its appearance, we latter found out that it would have been a cod that grabbed it ,they feel like your snagged, must be some big cod out there.
Day seven had a day off from the boat and headed to town to catch up with Adam .After a bit of a cit chat and some handy hints we headed of to the jetty near the airport. Lots of bait fish under the jetty, just put on a treble, drop it in and pull and you’ve got fresh live bait. The bait fish don’t last long between the long toms and small queenies, all small but a lot of fun. On the way back to Tandibidi we stop at the point behind the windmills and cast some poppers of the reef ,got one nice cod around 2-3 kg not sure what sort it was though.
Day eight We headed over to the murion islands for a crack at the GT’s, but they wern’ t in a mood to play. As we could see the under the boat , every now and then one would hit a popper and not hook up .We move to the next break and found some queenies now these fish are good fun, no messing around BANG your on, and a great fight for the size. Time flies when having fun, we moved around the eastern side and trolled though the shallows with no luck, through some poppers at the slow moving mantas hoping for some cobia, nothing happening .Time to head back, lucky Matt was not paying attention on were he was going and headed of course only to run over some nice ground, a few drifts on and we had a assortment of fish coming up, coral trout,rankin,travally,shark,emperor,boldcin ,and a few others not shore of .Anyway getting late so back to the ramp were Adam was waiting with some beer, on to inform us he had been out in the morning for a few hours and got a marlin and hooked 3. Not what we wanted to here but it gave us hope for the next day, with a few areas and some tips we were all ready for the next day.
Day nine And the confidence was high as we headed out to try for the allusive marlin, we had heard about. We set the lures and trolled out to 114meters ,and weaved through the contour lines. When suddenly our thoughts turned to the reel in the back corner, YES the one with the line peeling off. Was this what we had been dreaming of catching, NO but just as good a sailfish broke the surface with three or for great jumps before throwing the hooks . YES now that’s more like it,the weather was starting to get a little coppy and forced us to head for the reef were it was a little calmer Now this was the start of a run of hits and hook ups that lasted 3-4 hours and a have to say it was MAGIC ,to see a marlin chasing down the skirt , and hit and run is an amazing sight one witch im not going to forget. Two marlin boated one released successfully, and nine strikes now that’s fishing. Unfortunately one could not be revived and was kept for dinner. I must say to anyone heading north have a crack at the billies as there’s not much that can give that sort of a buzz.
Day ten The last day before we bid farewell to Exmouth the plan was to hit the billfish again but there was not a thing to be had, but that’s fishing, and and the trill of my first marlin will be with me for some time Any way hope your not all falling asleep. Would just like to Thank Adam for his advice and if you’re down this way and want to go for a fish just give me a ring. Also to Matthew for being so patient with the boy im shore he will remember our trip for some time. Well that’s it so until next year ……… BRING IT ON Paul and Jesse

Why I live in Exmouth
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2008-06-03 13:56Well, just got home from a lovely morning on the water. Launched the boat at Tantabiddi at 9.15, lines in the water by 9.30, first dolphinfish from the school at 10.00. (lots of hits before hookup) First black marlin came at 10.50, landed 11.20 with a 10ft tiger on his tail under the boat the whole time. Teasers out and before the lures hit the water a school of dollies swim under the boat. 5 minutes into trolling the second black marlin hookup, spits the hook on the jump. Less than 5 minutes later the third marlin smashes the lure and goes on a 100m airborne run and spits it. Pulled the lures in as it was just too good to be true, went a did some driftbaiting, 4th fish was a beautiful Coral Trout. Back at the ramp by 12.45 before the tide got too low and it became a full beach retrieve. My sisters first real fish in 17 years and it was magic. Photo's to come...
PS. Feel sorry for Mako, Paul and Jesse - 5 days non stop trolling for no sight of a billfish..... :( Some days its just too easy.
Cheers,
Adam

Alkimos Overnighter
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Mon, 2008-06-02 18:16Well, i started planning this overnighter 3 weeks ago, and as usual, nothing went to plan. Mate pulled out at last minute, replacement pulled out, so i thought stuff it, wifes away, im going anyways! Cruised up lunchtime Sunday, found a decent spot, and set up camp.
Threw a few in during the late arvo, but weed moved in so i shut it down and contemplated the milky way under the influence of bourbon, thank god the dog was there, so at least it seemed i was talking to someone... Hit the swag early in anticipation of a hot bite, after soaking the burley bomb all night. By the way, as long and hard as i looked, i saw no paranormal activity.....
Got up round 5am, had some sausages, and lazily rigged a line. Re-stoked the bomb, and proceeded to have a super hot 5 hour fishing session. Landed heaps of chunky Skippy to a kilo/kilo -half, that managed to crank a decent arc into the Snyder 7wrap. Weed had all but cleared and things were looking good. Few small Whiting, and plentiful Bull Herring kept things moving.
Late morning i'm reeling in what i presumed was the upteenth huge Herring for the morning when WHAMMO! Half way in the rod buckles, and line starts peeling of the 6500ssm at a rapid rate!! Thumping headshakes, and a solid 30-40m run then nothing???@?! Back to the herring again. Im stumped and majorly dissapointed. And then i reel in this poor little Flathead thats been slammed by something on the way in! Well, dog was happy, fresh Flathead for pooch!
Packed up and gone by lunch, cruised home and cleaned up. Ended up with a decent feed, threw heaps back, and missed a few. Saw heaps of guys get bogged on the beach up there. It can be tricky in places, and the council is making life hard there too with all the works. When driving through this area, please take care, it seems as if a accident with 4wd's or bikes is imminent up here, with peeps flying round in all directions, and remember to always leave it clean.
