Outboard mounting set up!!
Submitted by abbo_05 on Sun, 2015-04-12 20:25Hey lads
I was out in my quintrex dory 4.2, when I noticed a fair bit of spray from water coming from the outboard, seems like it may need to be positioned differently, not sure what kinda knots I should be getting out of the 25hp honda four stroke, so not sure if it's working to hard due to incorrect set up,
here is is a pic of the spray, if u can see it?
cheers in advance

Marine Sparky needed
Submitted by Escape on Thu, 2015-04-09 10:34
Hi ,
Hoping there is a Marine Sparky on the site able to solve a problem on my boat located in Hillarys. (This is a paying job of course)
Boat is Bertram 35 with twin Volvo Diesels. Located in the DOT pens at Hillarys.
Problem is that when turning the ignition on I get a weaker ignition alarm than the other side and when I go to push the starter button there is absolutely nothing - no clicks - absolutely nothing. Tested the good side and I get around 12.6 volts to the starter button then tested the other side and have around .13 volts to the starter button. Tried a new ignition switch assembly with no difference.
So looking for an electrical wizard to solve this problem.
Thanks Evan MacRae

Researching First Boat
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-04-05 08:46Well my second really but my 3m dinghy isn't exactly a boat but I am looking to upgrade within the next 12 or so months to something big enough for the family. We are a family of 5 with a 5, 2 and 6 month old so need a small secured area up the front (not neccessarily a cuddy cabin) to play so something like a bowrider would be no good.
I am looking for something that is a bit of an all rounder but mainly for fishing for the estuary/river and inshore fishing as well as offshore on good days and also able to pull a biscuit/wakeboard and be big enough for at least 3 people to be able to fish from. I am also after something that I can launch and retrieve on my own.
I've been keeping an eye on the Trailcraft in the 4.75m and 5m and the Quintrex in the 4.8-5m range but can anyone else reccommend any other brands I should also be on the lookout for? The budget is going to be somewhere in thhe vicinity of $15-22k
Cheers

what gauge wire for rewiring boat
Submitted by Paul N on Sat, 2015-04-04 12:40Time has come to tidy up the boat wiring and get rid of some of the tangled mess of wires from add-ons over the years. Does anyone know what gauge wire would be suitable for all the electronics nav lights etc . is it better to go heavier gauge to be on the safe side from voltage drop . Im talking about the wires from a buzz bar to the individual units . Also is it better to run Eco Sounder direct from the battery or is it ok to run from buzz bar as well. At the moment it runs from buzz bar but turns off every time I start the motor
Thanks Paul

Fined
Submitted by jighead on Thu, 2015-04-02 11:29I have a 10ft tinny that I use with a 30 lb thrust electric tiller steer motor. I have had it for years and it get's a lot of use and never bothered to license it as I thought it wasn't required. Anyway the fisheries came alongside for a chat the other day and asked a few questions and took all my details and at the time even they weren't sure if it needed to be licensed. Now three weeks later I get a phone call to inform me that I am going to be fined $160 because any powered craft needs to be licensed they eventually decided. Just wondering how my tiny tinny differs from a yak with a leccy and what others thoughts are on the matter.

Another tale of a trailer (and boat)
Submitted by shammy on Fri, 2015-03-20 16:38Zoom's story got the better of me... and he is not alone; anyone thinking of a purchase needs to either do some home work or spend some money... here is my journey...lolol. And now; I have a great boat........
I purchased my boat and trailer after seeing the ad online through a Marine business in Perth (Hillarys) who "locate boats" for people.
I still have the original advertisement... Ready to go the other side of Rotto etc.
MMM no it wasn't, NOT AT ALL!!!!
So muggings here, goes and has a look down near Fremantle; nice hull, trailers ok- not great, engines a bit old but it had good bones and breeding, (Chivers).
Went to the sellers house in Hamilton Hill had a look, and decided after talking to him it was a go.. Asked about the trailer and was assured the bearings (tandem axle) were fine and the boat was a gift, (he was into racing cars now)So I bought it. KA-ching $$
Took it home on his word; and didn't bother to check bearings, one run in the river went ok so decided to take it to Hillarys and go for a fish.. Travelling down Gnangara road, I look in the rear view mirror and see the outside rear wheel started to "wobble" I slowed down but was unable to stop before it let loose, the wheel crossed traffic (thankfully not hitting and one or thing) and wound up in the sand on the opposite side of the road. Not happy!!
I went home and spoke to my neighbor who is always ready to help, he's got a spare set of bearings and hub in the shed, and he calls a mate, we did a repair/ replaced bearings on the side of the road.
Went home... Replaced all bearings etc(4 ea) out the back on the ground on a tarp with the boat on stands. First time I'd done it by myself, looked it up on the net spoke to the neighbour, and not a problem. After a few months trailer was just not what I wanted.
Trailer was looking a bit sad, rust wise, so decided to replace it, and got a great deal and great trailer from Wayne at "Trailit".
Sold the old one for about $950 in the quokka. It probably would have done another few years after my work but I'd had enough of it.
Then there was the boat "that was ready to go out wide and easily take you out the other side of Rotto" Caveat Emptor (buyer beware)..... lolol so get the boat in the water on an ordinary day with it's OVLOV AQ145 (Volvo), off the ark, but reliable, just a bit long in the tooth.
Now in the slop I can smell fuel, mmmmmmm I'm not doing this, so decide to go home... which I did.
Could not find a leak from built-in under-floor alloy tank, nor could marine workshop.. but the smell was always there, and often a sheen in the bilge water.... and I just was not happy with it or the smell of fuel. Was also not happy with the $1600 bill for a "service" from the engines authorised dealer in Fremantle, but that's another story....(We settled on $800 in the end)
So I did an upgrade to the old tub.
In the end it was fitted with, New 5 litre V8 mercuiser, took it from 25 knts flat out, to gutsy rumble at 43/44 Knots WOT, new seats, new pedestals, new dash, new built in fiberglass fuel tank and capacity going from about 110 litres to 280 litres. New electronics and engine management EFI system Smart craft, Also replaced a host of other items to get it to where it was ready "TO GO TO THE OTHER SIDE OF ROTTO". Having done all this I contacted the "middleman dealer" via email and told him of his advertisement and of my journey; I did suggest that perhaps he should temper his advertising a little. I received back a very unpleasant email including accusations of being half full of beer when sending them emails about my boat.. which was not the case.. I did explain their advertisement and claims were "a little wide of the mark", and that now, after I had spent a bucket of money; the boat was indeed ready to go to the other side of Rotto or anywhere else... I could have done it cheaper and sold it but as I said; it had good bones and good breeding and now I'm happy with it... so for people buying boats and trailers it may pay to do a bit more homework than I did; and perhaps other have done..... I'm still spending because it's a good boat and does everything I need of it...next is the screen, canopy, and targa/ rod holders...

The tale of the trailer
Submitted by z00m on Fri, 2015-03-20 12:57When I bought my boat recently I got a good deal a conceded there were a few things to put right with the boat. What I didn't realise was there were far more issues with the trailer.
- Turns out the number plate on the trailer didn't match the VIN number
- The chassis number had never been registered in WA (probably not in Aus either as it was an import)
- Trailer failed inspection due to noisy wheel bearings and rusted brake lines
So after a few days of running around the trailer is now registered so thanks goodness for small miracles.
Moral of the story - do your checks carefully if you have any doubts at all.

Recommended Marine Mechanics SOR
Submitted by Bruce on Fri, 2015-03-06 09:33Morning,
I'm looking for a good mechanic to service my Honda outboard, prefer mobile but can take it to a local dealer for servicing. I'm in the Melville area so can anyone recommend a mechanic that they've delt with before, either mobile or close by, that did a good job?
Thanks

Looking for VP mechanic for an AQ171
Submitted by Relic on Thu, 2015-03-05 10:48I've got an older aq171c that needs some setting of the dual carbs and other minor tuning. Hard to find anyone willing to work on these older engines these days. I was hoping to hear from someone who is familiar with these engines, probably retired by now. I'm down near Margaret river.
Re-licensing a boat trailer
Submitted by Bruce on Fri, 2015-02-27 12:56Hi Fellas,
There's a boat for sale that is on a currently unlicenced trailer, and I was just wondering whether anyone has gone through the process of putting it through the pits and relicensing it again?
How much of a hastle was it and how much should I expect to pay? Its a dual axle trailer 2004 for a 5.5m boat in reasonable condition
http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/license-a-trailer.asp
Seems pretty straight forward but if anyone has done it before it would be good to hear from you!

Steering wheel replacement
Submitted by colliewally on Fri, 2015-02-27 09:29Normal

I would like to update the steering wheel on my boat. The steering that I have is the Mercury Ride Guide, while it is old, it still works perfectly and I don’t intend to replace it soon.
Unfortunately, the wheel attaches to a square taper and all new wheels have the ¾" morse taper.
Can anyone suggest a workaround? I am thinking that I may need to buy a wheel, knock out the central hub and get it machined to fit the square taper.
All suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

need help please!!!
Submitted by shane78 on Thu, 2015-02-26 19:50Hey guys I have a baron statesman 1800 that I have been refurbishing for the
last 3 months or so I am finally at the point of puting her in the water for the first
time but I have a problem. I cant get the tilt to work, long story short I replaced
the wiring harness on the 76 1150 mercury and controls. before the tilt buttons
were on the dash they are now on the control unit and I am unsure how to connect
I can get the pump to make noise but the motor will not trim up or down, I changed
one of the rams and lost a little bit of fluid could this be the problem or could I just have
air in the system, the wire colours on the new setup are green blue purple and the old setup
had purple blue and blue/purple with what i think is a common power or earth, the plug
from old setup that fits up to pump had three pins and my new one has only two so cant
fit it straight up, hopefully I have explained it well enough and someone can help
me I am hanging to get my baby on the water..

Boat service
Submitted by collin g wood on Thu, 2015-02-26 18:30After reading a thread on FW last week about boat motor fitting/ servicing I thought I would shoot of an enquirery to Marine masters as recommended by a couple of people, after the first message via their web site contact heard nothing, sent off another message via their website contact page and still have not had a reply, they obviously have enough work on and don't need a new client or just couldn't be bothered replying, dunno but I won't be trying them again..
