Holidays - Fishing Trips
Kalbarri this weekend 15th-18th
Submitted by MattMiller on Sun, 2011-04-10 16:25Hey guys, the beach rods are getting dusty due to no Salmon run this year so i'm heading up to Kalbarri with a mate this friday for a 3day Tailor/Mulloway mission.
I don't have access to a Quad or tinny so crossing the river is out so will probably stick to Blueholes/Syphon, Chinamans, Redbluff/Wittacurra and maybe a cliff fish if the weather allows.
Has anyone got any recent reports from up that way they could share? How's the river flowing atm? Also any local tips would be great![]()
Cheers.

Hopeless fisherman finally has some luck
Submitted by Jarrad11 on Thu, 2011-04-07 16:06Hey guys i did a post before about a trip to busselton i took to do some fishing but didnt really have much luck.
well i headed out again to Quinns dog beach Beach last Saturday night and i finally had some luck....sortof. Whithin about 5-10 mins of my first cast i got onto a decent sized octopus, i brought that in and the mate i was fishing with chopped it up to use as bait and on his first cast using it he caught a Leopard Shark (i dont know a lot about sharks but that is what he said it was) we chucked it back though as it was only a little one but at least i have finally caught something worth while.
spewing i didnt have my camera with me but didnt expect to catch anything. Does anybody else use this spot, and if so what do you tend to get down there?

I have heard stories of big GTs and Queenies in some particular areas of the jetty and wouldnt mind giving it a go. Any information would be awesome. Im only there for a night and have no car so huge treks are out.

Ashburton River - first time fisherman hoping for some help!
Submitted by Wibbly on Wed, 2011-03-23 17:34G'day!
Just joined up here today, this is my first post... hello Fishwrecked! We (me, my three teenage children and wife) are planning a camping/fishing trip up to the Ashburton River in June/July and had a few questions to put forward to anyone who's ever done something similar.
First question is as to whether anyone knows how busy it gets at the riverside around June/July? We live in Geraldton, so it's quite a drive up there... the last thing we'd want to be greeted by would be a campsite congested with happy campers!
Now, onto the actual fishing questions... I've heard that there are barramundi and mangrove jack, does anybody know what other (edible!) species can be caught in the Ashburton River? Has anybody had any success catching fish casting a line off the bank, or is a boat really necessary to catch fish?
Thanks in advance for any help
Wibbly

Kalbarri Trip- 19/03/11
Submitted by shanedm on Mon, 2011-03-21 10:22Hey guys. Just got back to perth yesterday after a quickfire fishing trip up in Kalbarri with the boys. Weather was pretty rough with the wind and swell turning out to be much larger than expected but still managed to get into a few fish thanks to our boatman Laurie :). We didn't get any hits on the troll initially and managed 3 drops at our first drift spot before making the decision to chase tuna schools for the rest of the day. Overall we landed a nice YTK, a dhuie on the drift with a few YFT's and a couple of stripeys on the way home. Pretty good fun in the end - shame about the weather tho!

Denham Boat Fishing Info??
Submitted by JTuffers on Sat, 2011-03-19 18:19Hey Guys,
I am heading up to Denham next week with the fam, and we are taking up our 5.5m Savage.
I have only ever fished out of Steep Point, so I am keen to learn if there are any good reefie areas in the Gulf? We are hoping to get some pelagics and a few reef species.
A mate told me about Turtle Bay which is meant to be pretty awesome, but it is bloody miles away!! I am taking some jerry cans and have 120lt inboard fuel tank so we have the legs to get there, but it would want to be pretty special!!
I think I may have talked up the area a little too much and am now worried I won't be able to deliver the goods. If anyone can pass on some experience it would be awesome.... beats going up there blind.
Cheers and happy fishing!

Monkey Mia
Submitted by yousetouse on Wed, 2011-03-09 08:13Hey guys,
Picked up a rod for the first time in over 20 years the other week and (unfortunately for my wife and kids) the bug has bitten.....
We are going to pack up and head to Denham/Monkey Mia for a week just before easter and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what to expect fishing wise? I know it is a bit of a noob question but having not fished for so long I want to be able to purchase (again unfortunately for the wife) all the gear I need to make sure we catch afew fish to throw on the BBQ.
Obviously already have the rig - so question is in regards to terminal tackle, lures etc etc Any suggestions in regards to bait/locations would be gratefully received.
At this point I am going to be land based so it mean jetties and beaches.
Have really enjoyed reading the forums over the last couple of weeks and look forward to posting some pics of any decent catches in the future.
Trev.

Camping Ledge/Lancelin/Wedge Area
Submitted by Haydz on Tue, 2011-02-22 14:46 Hey all,
A group of us are looking to go to camping somewhere around Ledge/Lancelin/wedge island.
We want to take the dogs with us..
Can you camp anywhere around there? Or do the rangers crack down on it?
We have a couple of 2wd's with us, so what's the new Indian Ocean Drive like getting to Wedge?
I've only bypassed Wedge on the Cervantees to Lancelin 4wd trip, which used to pass through the firing range.
Cheers

Hopeless fisherman hoping for tips
Submitted by Jarrad11 on Thu, 2011-02-17 11:01Hey guys i am new to the forum, this is my first post. I am heading down to Nannup Next week with my girlfriend and daughter, we both like fishing but are useless at it we can never manage to catch much but i have recently spent a bit of money on some new shimano rods and some tackle, im really hoping we can get something on this trip. I know in Nannup the Blackwood is your only real option and you can get redfin perch, bream, and possibly trout in there just wondering if anyone had any advice(rigs, bait, different spots), we will be on foot without a 4x4 with a 8 month old child so i know that makes it a bit more tricky but any info would be greatly appreciated, we are also willing to head to Busselton or Margaret River etc to have a go as like i said we really wanna get something, any ideas guys?

September Dhu fishing
Submitted by fishy2662 on Mon, 2011-02-14 11:30I am a keen South Aussie fisherman and I loves this sight for its fishing content and access it daily.
I am coming over in mid-late September and will send my wife on a winery crawl to free me up for a day's fishing.
What's the chances of catching a dhuie at that time of the year and are there any recommended charters from the
Perth- Freemantle areas that only cater for a small number of active fishers?

Flying to Broome - Rods
Submitted by Percula on Mon, 2011-02-14 10:00Hey All
Am going to Broome in May, and was thinking instead of taking rods/tackle on plane, that I would post up before getting there.
Do you think this would be the better way to go? And if so who would you recommend to use?
I only have a couple of rods, but one I want to take is 1.8m long when in half. If I can't take it its not the end of the world though.
Thanks
David

Yardie Homestead Holiday
Submitted by Newy on Tue, 2011-02-01 07:47Normal 0
I realise it's a little late but after reading another informative thread by Kingfisher549, I felt compelled to comment, this is actually my first time posting.
My wife and I always enjoyed travelling all over WA with our dog, a very well trained female mongrel, and as a consequence discovered Yardie Homestead on a North West trip about 8 years ago. My wife was pregnant with our first child and we camped on the grassed area right near the cleaning tables. We loved the place, close to the ramps, close to the surf yet far enough away to for a real camping holiday. We have been returning almost twice a year since then, each time with our growing family and our old female mongrel in tow.
On our last return to 'Yardie' we took up our usual camping spot late one afternoon, too late to check in. We were up early for our first excited early morning fish and left our dog tied to our tent, same place, same way as we've always done. We returned a couple of hours later and were unloading the boat when a grey haired gentleman on a 4 wheeled motorbike pulled up alongside. Before he got off the bike he was yelling in our direction, he approached my wife who was still holding the hand of my youngest 3-year-old child, and began waving his arms, wildly gesturing in the direction of our sleeping dog.
Same as the other post, he threatened us, he said he'd call the ranger and have her destroyed, he said he call the police and have us evicted, all while yelling at the top of his voice. The barrage continued for ages, I was dumbfounded, he didn't introduce himself and to say it was completely unprofessional was an understatement. I assumed he had some role within the park but couldn't believe the way he was spitting and yelling, all the while a white bull terrier sat on the back of his bike without a lead! With three kids under six I felt a little vulnerable, I mean I didn't know what was going to happen, so I just stood there dumbfounded while he continued his rant!
I have spent years and years travelling from the Gascoyne through the to South West surfing and fishing, we have camped at numerous national parks and campsites, we’re reasonable people and always try to do the right thing. I had never experienced behaviour like this. It certainly tarnished the holiday!
A few hours later, when I had calmed down, I went into the shop and spoke to a lady on the counter. I accepted that while we have always left our dog at the tent it didn't necessarily mean it was the right thing to do. However there are ways of speaking to people and resolving issues BUT the way he carried on wasn't the right way, it was aggressive, confrontational and TOTALLY disrespectful. My comments were greeted with a similar look of disdain and contempt from her, she begrudgingly agreed to pass the message on.
A few days later he dropped half a forced apology, still with the bull terrier in tow. A few caravan park residents approached me over the following days, several had heard our initial exchange and spoke of similar abrupt experiences with the ‘caretaker’.
Hopefully these new 'caretakers' move on and Yardie can return to the way it always was. If they can't handle 'paying' customers asking questions about fishing then they're in the wrong job, I mean, what do they expect, they run a caravan park in Exmouth??!!
Needless to say we haven't been back, we stay at a caravan park in town now …………. and the dog stays at home.

Camping and Fishing
Submitted by Bisho on Mon, 2011-01-31 18:28Hi!
Can anyone point me in the right direction for any place where I can camp and fish? Preferably isolated, as in rare or uncommon to see other people. River or beach, fresh or salt is all good. Somewhere I can pitch the tent, wet the lines and sit around the camp fire of an evening!

Patagonia Chile, December 2010
Submitted by Swamprat on Sun, 2011-01-30 20:36Few photos from a trip did to Patagonia, Chile in December.
Didn't get the best weather as the winter had been a cold and long one, this was fairly proven when it started snowing while trying to fish a lake.
Had a great time fishing dries for Browns and Rainbows but most of the larger fish came from wooly buggers.
Enjoy the Photos.

Port Gregory advice
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2011-01-17 11:22Just chasing a little advice on Port gregory.
Taking 2 boats up the week before the exmouth comp, then driving to exmouth from there.
Is beach launch i know, so have mats to assist in launch / retrieve.
Any adivce on where to look / target? As very close to wagoe, assuming Mackies should be in the area that time of year? do they patrol the outside edges of the inner breaking reefs?
Obviously tailor should be around in th evenings when the wind isnt so good to be on the boat?
Anything else we might encounter, hoping to find some good baldies, and pinkys. Along with any trout hunting around, plus the pelagics mackies, tunas etc.
Thanks
Bodie
