The $64 question - where should I go from Perth for 3 days fishing
Submitted by Rich on Tue, 2009-12-08 16:12Hello
My brother is coming to stay for 2 1/2 weeks late Dec to Jan 12. Hoping to sneak off for a few days fishing. I have fished Dunsborough area and Kalbarri, I am thinking of going to Kalbarri but it's a long drive.
Can anyone recommend somewhere in reasonable driving distance from Perth that has good fishing for a 6m trailered boat. Ideally small accommodation (don't have to recommend accom just area), or B&B/hotel, could camp but have to borrow gear. What would I like to catch - no suprises Spaniards, Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Dhu fish, Snapper and a Baldy! OK, just something memorable, preferably game fish.
Cheers
Richard

Sportfishing charters further north
Submitted by WODF on Wed, 2009-11-11 12:54The old man and I are planning a trip further north on a general 3-4 day (maybe even longer) sportfishing charter (chasing anything hard and fast - typical northern species) but have no idea on where with all the options we have here in WA and possibly even the NT. Places that spring to mind are the Mackerel Islands, Monte Bellow Islands, Rowley Shoals, of course most parts of the Kimberley and so on. Preferably we, well I am after a charter that is based around a camp or mothership and offering smaller boats for the fishing and exploring side of things. We're planning the trip around Jan-Feb due to work commitments but so far I've found a lot of charters aren't operating around then due to the wet season. Now I know this is not a good time to be heading north but these are the cards we've been dealt. So, I'm pleading to all FW folks to help me out on possible charters that you've experienced or heard of with a budget of around 10k for both of us including flights etc... if need be or we're willing to drive to save on costs depending on distance.
Thanks in advance,
Damo

Denmark /Albany/Walpole Scenery to die for
Submitted by Andy Mac on Fri, 2009-10-09 21:21Managed to take a few days holiday down south with the family. The weather was a little unkind to fish so we did a fair bit of driving and sight seeing.
That area is certainly one that I would recommend everyone visits at one time or another, the scenery is absolutely spectacular.
Here are a few pics from the thousands we took over the three or four days touring around down there. (We had a little family photography contest between my 11yr old and 15yr old girls and myself. Theres were better than mine!!!!)
Above is the view from our chalet.
Above: Heading down to Tree Top Walk
Above: One of the Giants of Walpole
Above: Amazing textures of the forest
Above: Getting to the water's edge
Above: The unique patterns of the Gap and surrounding rock formations
Above: Closer to Denmark
Above: The Wild Southern Ocean
Above: Just imagine what's down there in the wash.
Above: More fishing temptations
Above: More rugged coastline
Just a small sample of the beauty down that way. Loads more pics of Greenpools, Elephant Rocks, the Valley of the Giants, Walpole Inlet, Irwin Inlet etc, etc, etc...
I can't wait to get back down there again... roll on summer.

Coral Bay in November?? any one done it??
Submitted by hunterdive on Fri, 2009-10-09 21:04hi there guys, have any of you ventured North to Coral Bay or Exmouth around November, and if so what are the condtions like.
We are planning a quick trip up there and I'm wondering whether to take the boat or will it be too windy for a tinny. I spent 5 weeks there in April/ May and have been going there for the last 6 years or so, so i'm very familiar with the place, but never at that time of year. If its too windy then i'll stay land based and have a relax and a dive instead.
love to know your thoughts Jared

Jurien Bay
Submitted by Walker on Mon, 2009-10-05 20:59Recently on the last long weekend i went with family and friends to jurien bay. I dragged the boat up and was only able to launch once. I went out 20km. and looked around and around and around and around and was unable to find much reef out deep. after much frustration and telling all my crew not to worry we find some ground soon, i gave up and went in. we boated some nice table fish but i was after the famous Jurien Bay Dhu fish. On the way in i noticed some likely looking ground holding some very large fish. first drift Dhuie, second drift Dhuie, third drift Dhuie and fourth Dhuie. Not bad for 30mins work and all in 12mtrs of water. There was four in the boat and i couldnt of scripted it any better all landing a dhuie. in shallow water these things pull hard and and the one i had ran about 6 times. Also managed a 53cm KG
but the whole annoying thing is i spent about 5 hours looking in 40-50mtrs and could not find much. Is there any reef ??? Can anyone tell me...when all along the spot i fished was only 15min from the boat ramp.

back from busso
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Fri, 2009-10-02 18:20just got back from busso.I was there for about 6 days and fished everyday =D on the first 2 days i went spearing at meelup and got some good cuttlefish and big skippy and a few leather jackets. everynight at the jetty we got about 4 squid but released them all. also got some big skippy there. then the last 4 days i stayed at the anglican carvan park with a mate. We borrowed some gus cannoe and went out trolling on the weed. we got about 20 squid all up for the 4 days buyt only kept about 6(they were very delicous) then we went for kgs. and after paddling out past all the motor boats to a big sand spot andnot getting anything for about 10 mins we gave up and went for the long paddle back. just b4 shore i threw the anchor of(a brick on 50pound line) with out my mate knowing cause i was bored. we fished there for about 2 mins and i got my first bite of trip on the canoe(excluding the squid) and i landed a 44cm kg. we caught about 5 kgs. but released 2 because one was undersized and one we felt was to big to keep and it would be better of as a breeding stock. so yeah just got home and it was a good trip. if u ever want some good fish go out behind the caravan parks/campsites. ill try put some pics of the fish abit later

New Caledonia with LPB - August 2009
Submitted by Kasey L. on Tue, 2009-08-11 21:41Well, I always knew I was going to get bitten back someday!
I usually do a little prayer for wind whenever I go to NC, because in the past its been a crucial factor for stirring up the fish. What I didn't expect was 20-35 knot squalls and almost daily rain!
The trip this year was very cosmopolitan, consisting of anglers from 4 different cities. There was me from Kuala Lumpur, Kai from Singapore, Ricky from Perth and Glenn from Karratha. We were to fish for 6 days in the Southern Lagoon and around the Isle of Pines.
Before I continute, let me just say that if Qantas didn't have a monopoly on the Sydney to Noumea route, I would opt never to fly with them - even if it costed me alot more. Once again, they transpired to lose our luggage, this time all our rod tubes bar one. I'm sorry if anyone here is associated with Qantas but for them to do it two years in a row, now that's just hopeless! I have a feeling those rods are still sitting in transit at Sydney Airport, because we still haven't recieved them. It was only fortunate that Brandon had left 2 rods with LPB for me to use, otherwise we wouldn't really have been able to fish.
Anyway, onto the popping. With the kind of weather we were having, this was tough work! We spent alot of time inside the lagoon because the swells outside the Barrier Reef were just too big. The rain, overcast skies and strong winds seemed to absolutely shut fish down, and all of us had to really work very, very hard.
The average number of GTs landed per day would be about 3, but that's between the six of us casting on rotation, 3 at a time, non-stop. I actually never caught a GT after the third day and still somehow ended up with the most GTs for the trip. There might even have been a point where we got excited over raising a Red Bass! (OK, maybe not quite that desperate)
To their credit, David and Rudy tried their absolute best to put us onto fish. I have never covered so many miles popping in NC as I did with them on this trip, as they travelled far and wide to try and find us GTs. I mean, these boys really worked hard, and while we all know that fish shutting down is part and parcel of fishing, David still looked really stressed in the evenings! I guess he must have been thoroughly racking his brain to see what could be done. Really, it was simply a case of "C'est la vie" and given the tough conditions, LPB once again performed par excellence.
Why? Well, what we lacked in quantity, we certainly made up for in quality. Most of the GTs were about 25kg at least, and the biggest three landed were 47, 43, and 38kg. Rudy got busted off in shallow water by what appeared to be a good-sized fish before he managed to even get a wind on his reel.
The unluckiest (or lucky, depending on perspective) angler award though goes to NC-first-timer Glenn. He managed to raise a HUGE 45-50kg GT that had its head almost entirely out of the water and had 3 goes at his pencil popper but he somehow failed to find tension on his line. I had a great view of the strikes from the flybridge and it seemed to me that the GT smashed the popper with such force and speed that it simply knocked the lure out of its own mouth each time.
Then on one of the last casts of the trip Glenn managed to raise, hook and fight another 45-50kg monster all the way to the boat. He had done all the hard work and I was just about to see colour when I saw the tip of Glenn's Ripple Fisher lose tension. The fish had somehow gotten off the hooks only some 10 meters under the boat! It was that close I actually thought of jumping in, and I think Glenn almost had a tear in his eye. Ah well - something to keep him coming back!
I suppose there is a balance in this universe and Glenn did get very lucky with his, and LPB's, first successfully landed sailfish on popper. The popper was an Orion ConoCono 140g and the sailfish was about 35-40kg. Rudy also had a big sailfish fin and hit his Carpenter-Gamma stickbait a few days later but with trebles it was always going to be hard to set the hook.
A few other highlights include:
A huge Mackerel leaping 7 feet in the air (literally over Glenn's head) as it smashed his popper some 5 meters from the back of the boat. It was so big I actually thought it was a doggie - 30kg at least! An awesome sight from the flybridge.
Also, in continuing my tradition in NC, I once again went diving for a Big Foot. It actually got caught around the right prop as I tangled with David at the front, and we had to limp on one prop and anchor inside the lagoon. The water must have been about 22 degrees and Rudy looked especially relieved when I said "I'll jump in, my mistake". First cut and my Big Foot gets free and then proceeds to sink to the bottom in 6m of water. I think I did quite well to retrieve it, considering the strong current, lack of weightbelt and fins!
David and Rudy also took us up to their special spot at Lake Yate where we went bass fishing with stickbaits. Let me just say, these two French gentlemen really know how to look after their guests. Nothing big was caught but we definately had alot of fun (and beer)!
The only main drawback I can think of was casting I-cups and 220g Big Foots all day for the first 3 days on a Carpenter UHL. This was then followed by fighting some really crazy fish on that same rod. There wasn't anything over 35kg but there is just something about winter NC GTs - they absolutely refuse to come to the boat! Check out Brandon's 2008 August NC report to get an apt description of what I mean. I think I'm still looking for my right arm somewhere.
Technical information:
The most successful poppers the Hammerhead I-Cups, G-Cups, Fisherman BigMouth 220HP tail, Orion ConoCono and Big Foot 220g. David and Rudy were also using the biggest Kong poppers which, I must say, impressed me quite abit. Depending on the conditions pencil poppers also did well, such as the Fisherman Paro-paro and Long Pen.
And now for some selected pictures:

Cairns tips?
Submitted by eddie on Tue, 2009-07-21 22:05Hey guys,
I might be heading to Cairns with the family in October. Hoping to check out the rainforest, definitely hit the GBR, and also up for some fishing.
To any of you who have been there or lived there I'd love some advice on:
- fishing charters? Not too interested in marlin, looking more towards GTs, mackies, tuna...that sorta thing.
- snorkeling charters? Who do ya recommend? My wife and I would be up for snorkeling. My parents are a bit older and would be probably be more interested in staying dry. They might have a snorkel in very safe, calm conditions.
- Other points of interest that we shouldn't miss? Again, remember my parents are older and probably aren't up for anything too strenous.

New to Exmouth!
Submitted by dodo on Sun, 2009-07-12 01:01Hi everyone!
Attached is the picture of a big tuna caught in the Mauritian water by my dear skipper. I'm new to this website. I've been to Exmouth in April but I was limited to Landbase fishing, which was also amazing. This December, I'm going with some mates with a 16' Glasscraft, very excited! We use to fish a lot back in Mauritius and we can say that Australia is so far one of the best place for fishing! We want to catch some big fishes this time, tuna sailfish, wahoo, mako...
Can you tell me some general tips for Exmouth for this types of fishing? Any suggestions would be really great!
Thanks

Exmouth - 6July
Submitted by DaveO on Wed, 2009-07-01 17:02Greetings friends,
I've been referred to this site by till, who suggested that I let folks know that I'm not far from heading up to Exmouth for a break, and a spot of fishing (It'd be silly to post this up here if I was just up there for something else, right?).
I thought if anyone happened to be up that way, it may be fun to meet up - I'll be staying at the Lighthouse Caravan Park, and will have the dear wife and three kids in tow.
As I'm boatless, I'm planning a bit of beach fishing action. I'm no pro fisherman by any measure, but am always happy to learn new things, and don't mind a yarn over an ale.
I look forward to hearing from you if any of the above sparks an interest.
Cheers,
DaveO.

Abrolhos trip - who's interested? - Less than $1000 :D
Submitted by hlokk on Wed, 2009-07-01 14:48Hi guys,
I've spoken to Craig at SW Charters and he's mentioned he'd like to do one last trip before the Abrolhos season finishes this year.
If any of you guys have been out with Craig, you'll know that hes a great guy and even better skipper. I've been sambo jigging a few times with him, and i've heard some great reports about the abrolhos (something about a one drop dhuie spot? ;) ). Craig has lots of different ground, and a fair few spots in shallower areas for when the wind picks up a bit. Mostly fishing for fun, not fillets (but of course some fillets will be taken home
). Craig has mentioned that quite often they'll use jigs and plastics when picking up bottom fish like dhuies, baldies and coral trout, as well as putting some lures out the back for mackies and whatever else pops up. So should be pretty good for the guys who are really into their sports fishing (but still great for those guys who like like trading some bait for nice white fillets). Craig is pretty accomodating, so its up to us what we choose to do.
Usually the trips run the four days, get up there thursday, sleep on the boat, head to the abrolhos friday morning, then fish fri, sat, sun, mon and head back in the arvo. Everything is included, except alcohol (and if we get enough people i'm sure I can provide some :D)
No dates yet, as we can see what suits. If we can get enough people, then it will be a great trip, and for the rate we've got, it going be an even better price.
(PM me if you want more details). Saltwater Charters Website.
Looking for about 6-8 people in total, so with around 55' of boat to play with theres heaps of room.
Edit: Got a bit confused with the available dates, and as Craig is heading off for prawn season, it will be the one possible weekend only.
The date will be 17th-20th July (Thu evening, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, back Monday arvo). There might be a small bit of wiggle room there (and if need be we can make it 3 days).
Cost will be only $1000 (its normally $1400), so get in quick to make use of a great value trip

Exmouth Trip????
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Sun, 2009-05-31 14:25I am planning a family trip to Exmouth next year around May towing the boat and tenting it.
Was wondering if anyone would like to have some input on what they thought would have been a nice to have on their trip, or found that they needed something but never thought they would have. Thought this might be a good time since things are still fresh in the mind of those that have just returned.
Thankyou in advance.
