A constructive post - tying assist hooks

Hi guys, I like to make my own assist hooks, and usually when I have some free time I make up a big batch that will last me for the year. With the long weekend, and me running on low inventory, it was time for this again.

There are infinite ways to tie them; I've experimented with a few and stuck with those that I find easy and clean to tie and which I have confidence in. I use a common method for my big assists (size 7/0 to 13/0). However for my smaller hooks used for light jigging, I prefer a different, less bulky method as the hooks are alot smaller. The assist cord material is also thinner and less stiff, allowing knots to bite in better. When I sat down to do this a few days ago I couldn't remember the method very well (doing it irregularly), but when I went online to refresh my memory I couldn't find my usual website! I had to sit down, cut up a couple of old, dead ones and piece it back together. So I won't forget again in the future, I thought I'd post it up for my reference here, and also for anyone else who's interested.

--- STARTING MATERIALS: In this case, I'm making assists for my 120-200g jigs (PE4). You need some solid rings (Owner size 5), some kevlar (YGK No. 20 - 190lb), and some hooks, in this case Owner SJ-38 size 2/0. You will also need a pair of scissors, a lighter, and a pair of pliers (preferrably long nose). You can also touch off each completed knot with a dab of superglue, but I've found it unnecessary.

I'll use a proxy hook and kevlar in the steps; its just much bigger so you can see what's going on.

--- STEP 1: Thread the kevlar through the eye of the hook, front to back, as shown (excuse the blurry pic)

-- STEP 2: Loop the kevlar around creating a half-hitch. The direction is important.

-- STEP 3: Loop the kevlar around the shank of the hook again exactly as shown.

-- STEP 4: Pass the tag end through the loop to create a half hitch in the opposite direction.

-- STEP 5: Loop it around the shank one more time in the same direction as STEP 4, creating another half-hitch.

-- STEP 6: Use pliers to tighten one end in the direction shown.

-- STEP 7: Now tighten the other end, again using the same method as shown.

-- STEP 8: You're done! Trim the tag end down to about 10mm, and burn the tip off with the lighter. While its still molten and hot, press it down with the butt of the lighter to squish it into a 'mushroom head'. This will act as extra insurance that the knot does not slip.

Rod suitability

Hi guys, I have a rod. I'm hoping to utilise. It is a SALTIGA. BAYJIGGER that is PE 2–4 and maximum jig180 G. It is a fairly soft rod but I'm unsure exactly how a slow pitch rod should perform so perhaps that is what is needed. I really like the rod is is is very parabolic want to make sure a jig will actually work properly on it so any advice it would be rod.

I'm back

Hi everyone I have stopped shooting competitively I won club and state champs and 4th in the national champs in metallic silhouette shooting rifle & pistols.

Looking forward to participating, Brendan.

Poseidon OH Reels

Anyone taken a gamble on Poseidon OH reels?

Suspicously similar to the Accurate Reels out of the states, but made in Thailand

Dual drag, Dual Ar bearings, Ton of drag

Thinking about grabbing one of the bigger sizes for a charter up north next year, would go a Talica or Maxel but dont get up there that often anymore

leader type

hey guys.

was just wondering if anyone has suggestions on a good leader for jigging? and what sort of strenght to use?

so far im using black maging 50lf flurocarbon. im thinking of dropping to 40lb.

iim usually fishing in 40m or so, pe 3, usually approx 100-150gm jiggs.

is there a difference between flurocarbon and shock leader?

anyone tried the  refuze fluro or shock leader?

im mainly targetting dhueys, so far yet to get one on jig, but hanging out for that monster! so far best catch on jig is a 65cm kg whiting! go figure...lol

cheers!

Jigging rod. Are they a benefit??

 Hi Guys.

I have a question to all the Masters of jigging.

Are Purpose Jig rods a real benefit to the action of the jig and would they catch more fish?

2 years ago or so I started with soft plastics, so the rod that I purchased at the time is a bit stiffer in the action than a purpose jig rod. Since my fishing has evolved I'm also now using flutter jigs.

I mainly fish 30-40metres with 80-110 gram jigs. We do alot of reverse fishing just hovering over the patches and not much drifting, unless we go deeper and are using heavier jig weights, then the stiffer rod I have seems and feels to put more action into the jig

I've had success with the set up I own, but I'm so far not convinced itsany better than baits. I've not had a day where the jigs just smoked it over the paternoster bait rig, and I'm wondering if rod selection is a piece of the puzzle that I could improve on.

We had a great season last year on the Dhuie's and I would have to say the baits definitely cleaned me up.

Any advise would be appreciated.

STORAGE

hi guys.

just wondering how you guys find best to store your plastics and jigs? im finding im getting pretty unorganised very quickly when changing over etc at sea! and dont want to have them lost in gunnels etc or sitting somewhere where the hoks will rust...

cheers!

jigging style

Hey guys. just getitng into jigging, yet to catch anything, but finding it pretty addicitive, and full of anticipation!.

i have been fishing mainly in the 40s-50s using a mix of soft plastics (mainly 6.5 inch paddle tails) and metal jigs.

i read that its important that your line/jig is pretty much straight to the bottom? is this correct?

i have found this a bit of a challenge even with the sea anchor, and have ended up having to use some pretty heavy jigs.

im haning out to get a dhu on a juig, ittl happen one day!.

was wondering if i could get some suggestions about what depth people usually fish with jigs, leader strenght/length, and technique? any knowledge really, because currently all i have is what i have seen on youtube or read on the net.

cheers!

Painting Jigs

 Hi Guys,

ive got a number of jigs (100g-200g) where the paint on the jigs is flaking off.

has anyone re-coated their jigs, and if so, what paint do use and where do you get it from?

Shimano Anarchy Pe8 jigging rod

Hi,

I just picked up Shimano Anarchy by Ian miller pe8 300g-400g jigging rod , intended for big kingfish, dogtooth, GTs etc Has anyone ever used one of them ? I can't seem to find any information whatsoever on the internet about those rods ?

They kind of remind me of the T curve deep jig.

Thanks a lot for your replies !

jig types

hey guys, starting to do a bit more fishing in the 35-40 m depths. mainly used to using bait, but would like to be able to have a jig out at the same time.

any advice on a type of jig that i could just drop out and have sitting in the rod holder while i fish with bait? also at this depth any hints on what size/weight would be most appropriate? im pretty new to jigging so just looking for something simple at the moment whcih may increase my chances of picking up that ever elusive dhufish. seing some of the photos on here has made me dead keen! have finally found some promising ground.

any advice greatly approeciated!

Jigging rod for super deep

 Hi all.

Looking for recommendations on a jigging rod suited to dropping big jigs in depths ranging from 200-400m from those who have had some success doing so.

Am a bit game and was planning on using a Stella 10k with a 14k spool loaded with a high breaking strain p.e.4 braid.  I have a Stella 20k with a spare spool if people think i'm being too ambitious with a Stella 10k.

Thanks.

Diawa v Shimano

Looking at buying myself a new overhead reel for jigging, and at this stage can't decide between the Saltiga 15H and Shimanos ocea jigger...any recommendations?

Gunnawundai pic of how I set up jigs

sorry cant add a pic to your post

I am going to persist

I am going to persist in using plastics or jigs for dimersal fishing even though at this stage I have hooked the bottom and lost several jigs, much to my Mates extreme merriment!

Question is:-

How do I set up my line with either soft plastic or hard jig?

Some pics or diagrams of rig setups would help.

Thanks.

Hots y2 alternative

Of course when I find a new favourite jig I struggle to get any more. Seems they are a bit light on in this country in the colour I want. Can anyone suggest a similar profile and action jig to the hots y2?

temple reef gravitate

Just after some info regarding the temple reef gravitate rods g2 or g3

Has anyone used these rods? Will they work smaller jigs say 60g in 40m of water? And are they suitable for pe2 or 3 lines with 5kg drags?

Any info or reviews would be great as there is limited info online

Regards Clint

Does any of you guys know where I could get a good jig tackle bag that carrys jigs once they are fitted with assist hooks. I've looked everywhere and can't see any and it's a real pain setting up jigs on the boat so maybe you could share your thoughts - cheers.

Savage gear squish jigs

Hi all, have any of you used the savage gear squish jigs? They’re a half fish, half squid looking jig and range from 80 grams to 160 grams. Any feedback welcomed.

Best all round Jigging and bottom bouncing combo?

Thanks in advance.

Best Charter for Jigging

I'm new to jigging and wanted to know who's the best charters around Perth for Jigging - I was out on a charter last week and they did not want you on board if you were jigging. Been on Shack Attack which appears to be the best.

Vexed jigs no more?

Are vexed jigs still around? Having a hard time finding them especially in the pink/pearl coloured Dhu drop. Having a fair bit of success with it and always on the lookout for them.

Jig Identification

G’day guys, with the poor weather I was going through my jigs and lures etc and came across these guys that I can not remember the names of to save me. Not that the names will help catch me fish, but I thought with the weather the way it is, why not put the question out there. I’m sure a couple are vexed and others zebras, but I’ll see what you come up with. I’ve added front and back photos to assist.

Guess that jig haha

Another couple of silver slobs on the jig

few dhus on jig from last couple of months :)

spiral wrap jigging rods

Does anyone have any experience with spiral wrap rods ?

Loaded one up  in store and it felt great , just not what i'm used to. Any pros or cons with these rods ?

Cheers Paul

Braid for Jigging

So after the 'incident' I've replaced my PE3 Type J rod and about to get another Biomaster but am going to get some high quality jigging braid on it. I used some high quality casting braid I had stored away for the last reel but am going to get jigging braid now that I have to buy it.

The braid I am looking at in the PE3 range is either Daiwa Saltiga 12 braid, Varivas Avani Jigging or Shimano Ocea. Price isn't a concern if it comes to quality so is the Daiwa Saltiga worth the extra $50-60 over the other two?

Cheers JF

Slow pitch jigging rod which one

Which slow pitch jigging rod to get ???

Looking at something like the Palms Metal Witch 686SF.

In Exmouth fishing 60 to 120mtrs and jigs from 80grm to 250grm. Have been using a PE2 catalina matched to a shimano ocea calcutta 300hg and PE3 but am a bit under gunned on the bigger reds and rankin.

Rod will be matched to either a Talica 10 2 speed, a Fin-Nor Marquesa 16 or a older Shimano trinadad 16N and PE4.

I already have spin sticks but prefer the overheads for slow jigging.

Any ideas would be great.

Cheers
