Aquaponics
Submitted by roddo on Sun, 2015-07-26 19:39Anyone into aquaponics?
I'm looking at setting up a reasonable size system just wondering who else does it and what sort of system your running, and all pros and cons of it.
I'm thinking of setting up 2 systems consisting of 2x 1000L tanks with a 1000L sump with 3 200L grow beds. most likely with clay grow media. the system will be 100% run on 12v with solar panels to make it self sufficient. I might set up one system with a bell syphon and one on a 15m on 45m off timer and see what is better unless someone can give me some advise. I have read a lot online but want some honest opinions.
cheers

Guest's online - A question for those in the know
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2015-07-23 08:29Whenever I see this column with say 95 users and 2500 odd guest I always wonder why they dont join in this great site. Are they mostly automatic bots (whatever you call them) or are they actual people looking, not joining. Seems a hell off a lot of them.

Round 17
Submitted by Justin M on Wed, 2015-07-22 09:27"The Haterz Edition"
Pointy end is coming around fast. Couple of big games coming up for the local mobs. Will Freo get the jump this time on the Tigers, will the Eagles take advantage of a lacklustre Swans with a further depleted defence (which has admittedly done quite well so far)? Collingwood looking to get a faltering season back on track against the Bullies, Hawks with a possible training run friday night. Which edition of the Roos will show up against the Lions?
Carl v Hawks
GWS v Cats
Crows v Suns
Rich v Freo
Ess v Port
BL v Roos
WB v Pies
Dees v Saints
Eagles v Swans

The WAFL Thread
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2015-07-21 17:59Won't need a round by round thread but does anyone still follow the WAFL?
My family are all Black Duck's through and through and I try to get to at least a handful of games each year and I much prefer heading down to Basso than I do going to watch the Eagles at Subi. Best part is I can get a couple of cans of full strength for me and some chips and an icecream for the young fella and I still get over $5 change from a $20.
2015 is a cracking season and bar Subi at the top and Perth at the bottom (who'd have guessed) any team can beat the other on any given day and it is going to be an interesting finals series.

YouTube
Submitted by lachieH on Sun, 2015-07-19 20:20Hi everyone, I just uploaded a new vid and I think it's the best yet. It's not fishing though but it's really good, mountain biking after all the rain last week. It was the first upload in a month so hopefully everyone likes it. I'm thinking of making another vid soon, no boat but any suggestions what I should make the vid on? Please watch the vid, I need as much feedback about that as I can!

Beware the malware
Submitted by Dale on Sun, 2015-07-19 12:48Was doing some reading on BBC Sport when this thing has come up on my iPad saying my computer has been locked by the Australian Federal Police for viewing all sorts of porn and I had to pay $300 to unlock my computer. Bit weird since BBC sport doesn't look like a porn site, although they are bitching pretty good about the ashes. Quick reset of Safari and all is good again.

Ocean drive
Submitted by sea-kem on Thu, 2015-07-16 09:25G'day fellas, pretty sure this might have come up before but will ask again. We are heading north next month for the annual trip. Because I live close to the city was thinking of heading up the freeway and then north on ocean drive all the way to the end where it meets the Brand. Will save a detour heading out Guilford way etc. Thoughts? We will leave around 5.30 am so will be nigh on daylight when we hit Ocean drive to avoid roos.

V8 300HP Yamaha corrosion
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2015-07-16 05:50Put the rescue boat in for its 400 hour service and mechanic found water in the oil on one engine and a trace in the other. Investigation found that the exhaust manifolds were being eaten away by electrolysis and the sacrificial anodes were not even marked, at $1800 a pop ex Japan, its going to be an expensive service.
Mechanic did a bit of exploring on the net and found that a batch of suspect manifolds were sent to the USA but cannot confirm this. On top of the flywheel vibration issues that will be ongoing, it seems they are not as good as we would expect them to be.

Round 16
Submitted by Dale on Wed, 2015-07-15 10:34Round 15 thread was getting far too hard to follow, 387 posts, must be a record with all the haters sniping. But, For once in our lives, I can see that most Freo supporters are going to be on the pies side this weekend. Normally it would be a bitter sweet moment when the Pies and egirls play, but this weekend I will be, well not quite jumping up an down cheering, but hoping the Pies can get the job done this time.
bring it on!!!

Interesting trip south
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2015-07-06 07:02Had to tow a trailer down south to Perth so left Carnarvon around 0200. O5OO and had the need to visit Jenny Craig's weight loss centre in a truck bay about 80km south of Billabong roadhouse. Pulled in and dropped a few kg and just signing the paperwork when bugger me dead, haven't seen a car in ages when one has to pull up and catch sight of one finishing his job.
4 blokes in a Patrol, loaded up with rods and gear on top, had stopped to pump their bilges out and dump some empties.
Off I go and sure enough they catch up and pass only for me to see them again 20 minutes later with them having yet another leak.
This went on right down with them stopping about 6-7 times till just north of Gingers roadhouse with them about 10 cars back while the coppers were collecting data from a prang earlier.
Dropped trailer off and left early Wednesday morning, stopped in to inspect Leeman sea rescue set up then off to Gero.
Left there Friday morning and just south of Billabong spot a boat trailer in trouble, lost left wheel and as it dragged on the bitumen had snapped the u bolts securing the axle to the spring. Asked if they were ok, "do you have any bolts"? not u bolts that's for sure but other than that it looked like they were ok so finished to drive without incident.
Should just about come up to Pete's adventures at his local boat ramp.

Winter project time!
Submitted by Josh on Sun, 2015-07-05 18:33Well it was time to upgrade, and I jumped on the deal of the year, landing a Barrington 5.4 targa sports late 90's plate boat for an absolute steal.
The pipeline holds putting a 4 Stroke on, hard top conversion, re wire with some newer electronics and doing something with the cosmetic stuff; paint and flooring.
In terms of the engine upgrade it has a 90hp 2 stroke jono with about 500 hours, pushing it along to 38 knots trimmed out. I have spotted a 90hp Honda at muhling Marine with hardly any hours, what kind of difference would I expect in changing it to a 4stroke?
In terms of the hard top I was thinking of it having a couple of purposes, storage of swags/surfboards/gear for long trips, but also the boat is going to get used a fair bit for wake boarding, so was thinking of integrating a tow point up the top, anybody have any experience/advice on hard top conversion?
The re wire is all under control,
The paint is pretty rough after a few seasons in the Karratha sun, I can borrow a big petrol water blaster from work, so was thinking of using that to get most of the paint off, then deciding on a backyard paint job vs. A pro job, and the price difference vs. the quality difference.
Then new carpets for the flooring.
Also thinking about making a bigger fuel tank and putting a gauge on it, as it's only 60l. So I'll keep the post updated whenever progress occurs according to finance and time.
Also need to sell the tinny to finance the resto

Knife Sharpening
Submitted by Madmerv on Fri, 2015-07-03 14:42G'day All
Knives are something we all have and use almost every day. Keeping them sharp is the problem.
Now this is not a problem i have personally as i've been fascinated by knives since i was given my first poicket knife at 4 or 5 years old. My knife collection has grown like my rod collection over the years. My knife sharpening skills have kept pace with technology and i'm now using a good quality diamond stone to keep a nice edge on all my knives.
I have however been out on many a mates boat, picked up the nearest knife to cut a fillet of wrasse, and ended up with something that looks like it was hacked off with a chainsaw. And basically it has been.
I spent the morning today looking for a quality honing steel and stumbled across this site that explains knife sharpening. For those guys that wonder how a knife magically gets sharp this is gold.
I do have to warn you that it is fairly long and in depth but if you do want to get your knives sharp then it is a good read.
http://forums.egullet.org/topic/26036-knife-maintenance-and-sharpening/
If anybody has a prefered Honing steel brand they would recommend please let me know.

Hardtop or bimini canopy?
Submitted by bradz on Fri, 2015-07-03 11:00My current canopy set up needs some refreshing and I have 2 options I would like your educated opinions on.
1. fabricate a fibreglass hardtop which would extend slightly forward of the windscreen and have some new stainless steel bar work made up to support it, followed by clears
2. modify the existing rocket launcher made by Brad at West Coast Marine and have a new canopy with a stainless frame and clears mounted off it.
If they both cost a similar amount which path would you go down and why?
Also, if I go the hardtop option I will be selling the current rocket launcher if anyone is interested.
Cheers
Brad
