Insulating kill tank/marine ply
Submitted by Bakerc on Thu, 2013-04-25 18:15Just building a casting deck with a Kill tank underneath. Wondering if anyone knows what to use as insulation around the tank itself, and where to get it. Any info would be a great help. Also chasing some marine ply if anyone has some they want to get rid of.
thanks,
chris

Jurien - A different perspective
Submitted by sambo24 on Mon, 2013-04-22 20:46I know a lot of guys here frequent the Jurien area quite a bit - so here it is from a different perspective.
My dad is an Airline Pilot and I am currently learning to fly - it worked out nicely that we had access to a Cessna 172 which is based at Jurien Bay airstrip.
We stayed over on saturday night at the pub and took an early morning sunday flight - south over the pinnacles and back north over water.
Unfortunately the weather wasn't great - Overcast at about 3000. Didn't stop us though..
Beautiful Coastline even under cloud cover!
The photos show The coast looking north and south, Cervantes Township looking east, a rather low level turn over the pinnacles, and turning onto finals for Jurien Bay Airstrip runway 20.

Solar Power
Submitted by wangler on Mon, 2013-04-22 19:22Thinking of getting Solar Power now. Growatt inverters seem to be the popular option with a lot of solar install companies at the moment and upgrading to the SMA is anywhere from $500 - $1200, a big price variant for the upgrade.
Anyone got a growatt inverter and how do they rate them?
The Solar panels on the other hand, there are thousands to choose from
.
Any opinions on systems what ppl have would be appreciated.
I'm looking at getting a 3kw system and have a 3phase meter at the meterbox.
Thanks in advance

Let some know where you are going - missing person on Jetski
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2013-04-22 11:29On duty on Saturday sitting in Hillarys when we get a call about a missing person on a jetski. left Mindarie at 5.30am and was due back 12 noon. Wife called us approx 3.30pm after checking the carpark.
She had no idea where he had gone - where to start.
Search commences with 4 rescue vessels and police chopper. Search area initially Burns Beach to Alkimos wreck and up to 3nm of the coast. Very large area and conditional not the best for spotting someone in the water.
I suggest search be extended north of Alkimos Wreck due to constant southerly wind most of the day. Police chopper located semi submerged Jetski just west of the Pippidinny Reef about 1 nm offshore. Short time later missing person located safe and well suffering mind hypothermia and flown to RPH.
We were able to recover the jetski and tow back to Mindarie to wating family who were very greatful for the job done.
A good outcome for all.
Lesson - always let someone know where you are going. If not contacting local sea rescue then let spouse or neighbour know. Will help in norrowing down the search area.

holden astra problem mechanic advice needed ?
Submitted by hezzy on Sun, 2013-04-21 18:22ok
advice help needed please ,see what you think the problem is as below scenario
out driving in my wifes auto 2002 1.8 litre holden astra today , we where doing about 80kmh , when we heard it start to make a clicking noise , similar to a loose bit of light metal or something flapping in the wind , slowed down and the nose stopped , then as we cruised at about 60 km it kicked in again ,
we pulled the car over on the side of the vasse highway , and turned the engine off , checked it out , looking for a any sign of the noise,
when I tried to restart it , it will turn over , but not fire ,
all gauges where fine , before it stopped , temp was between 80-100 in middle of gauge , has oil ,etc, engine was normal hot, not ticking and sizzling inside or anything ,
turn the key and it turns over but wont start , given the electrics on em ,any ideas on whats failed on it ??
my thinking is electric fuel pump or something with the electrics on it ?
will be trying to get a mechaninc to check it out tommoz or Tuesday ,
but before hand any suggestions welcome
thanks hezzy

Woodman Point Sketchies
Submitted by Olliej on Sun, 2013-04-21 11:49Was deserted at woodies yesterday (No Idea why...oh wait it was horrid out there). When we came back is we saw a couple of sketchy acting people in a green Holden Vectra in the carpark.
They had no fishing gear and were watching the few people people launch/retrieving. They made an exit shortly after we retrieved doing a slow drive past the boat in the rigging spot.
Maybe they were just sight seeing but certainly had a very sketchy feel to them.

Trailer brakes not working?
Submitted by oz74 on Thu, 2013-04-11 20:16Hi all,
i have recently had a brake controller - tekonsha P2, fitted to my vehicle however the electric brakes on the trailer only seem to work/ engage when the vehicle is in reverse.
it is a 200 series Landcruiser and I think it's a brake rite electric/ hydraulic disc brake setup on the trailer.
controller was fitted by Toyota and they are blaming the trailer wiring!? As it is working whilst in reverse, I am thinking that it must be the wire on the trailer plug that matches the vehicle 'reverse' pin on that is powering the brakes only.
toyota say that they actually wire up the pin to cater for service brakes so is it just a case of matching the 'service brake wire' pin with the trailer wire that is currently matched to the reverse pin.
or does this email not make any sense at all??
thanks for any help or hints
cheers

Pimp my fishing reel parts??
Submitted by scano on Tue, 2013-04-09 18:14Hi guys,
wondering where most of you buy aftermarket fishing reel parts online?
i am chasing parts to bling up my daiwa pluton among a few others.
The 2x sites I have found thus far are plat and also mud hole.
if you have any recommendation on where I can get nice shiny aftermarket small handles or dress up bits for a baitcaster at a reasonable price I would appreciate the info.
surely with 90% of what we buy being made in China there has to be some cheap alternatives to factory items around??

Abalone thief fined $15,000
Submitted by Iceman on Tue, 2013-04-09 12:49Department of Fisheries officers have netted their second abalone thief as part of Perth-based operation.
Operation Ratchet is a surveillance-based operation which aims to stop the illegal harvesting and distribution of abalone in Perth.
Darch man Van Thanh Le, 55, faced Joondalup Magistrate's Court on Friday, where he was prosecuted for taking abalone out of season, exceeding the bag limit and harvesting undersize abalone late last year.
He was banned from fishing for abalone, forced to forfeit his fishing gear and received more than $15,000 in fines, penalties and court costs.
Le and another man, 46-year-old Duy Cam Dao, who was prosecuted last month, were caught with massive hauls of abalone at Ocean Reef on December 11, 2012.
Dao was fined about $25,000 for his haul of 326 abalones.
Le’s backpack contained 299 abalones, 60 of which were undersize.
Fisheries compliance manager Phil Shaw said information from members of the public had led to the prosecutions.
“With more than $40,000 in fines from these cases alone, the public information has proved valuable and it’s good to know that the community supports our Fisheries and Marine Officers in identifying illegal fishing activity so they can investigate,” he said.
He said the West Coast Zone abalone fishing season was over, but the Southern Zone, which runs from the Busselton Jetty to the South Australian Border, was open until Wednesday, May 15.

Job Opportunity in Marine Business
Submitted by Chivers on Sun, 2013-04-07 21:42Hi Everyone,
I am currently able to offer a full time position working in our Marine Chandlery/Accessory store. I have not advertised this position to the general public at this stage because it is important that the successful applicant has a real passion for Boating and Fishing. I figure that being a member or reader of Fishwrecked prequalifies the candidates to some extent. Although we are not a tackle store I believe it is very important that our staff understand the needs of the trailerboat fisherman. Apart from general boating accessories we are also a Marine Electronics specialist selling Furuno, Lowrance & Simrad equipment. An understanding of Marine Chartplotters and Fishfinders would certainly be helpful. At this stage it would be appreciated if you could send your expression of interest to my e-mail,
Yours in Boating (and Fishing),
Luke Chivers
