Be responsible this festive season...
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Mon, 2012-12-24 22:18Now that the festive season is here, I would like to share a personal experience with you about drinking and driving. As you may well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from an occasional Christmas do over the years.
A couple of nights ago, I was out for an evening with friends and had 2 or 3 cocktails and a couple of glasses of Shiraz. Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before ~ I took a taxi home. Sure enough, I passed a police booze checkpoint but, since it was a cab, they waved it past.
I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise as I have never driven a cab before and am not sure where I got it or what to do with it now that it's in my garage.

Hot dip galvanising - hidden issues
Submitted by sunshine on Mon, 2012-12-24 11:38I recently had Chivers lift my boat, a 6.8 Seaquest, off the trailer and hardstand it whilst I did some minor work on the trailer. It was showing minor, and I mean minor, corrosion on the guards and cross members with very light rust spots and white "greying" in evidence on the bottom edges of several.
After a close look I took to those minor rusted areas with a powered wire brush to clean it off in preparation for cold galvanising however I came across a ten cent piece sized lump in the glav finish which the wire brush wouldn’t shift. It looked odd so I grabbed a hammer and gave it a tap only to have the hammer go straight through? What the hell !!……….beneath what appeared to be perfect gavanising was nothing, the steel had not rusted per se but had delaminated into grey flat pieces which were as brittle as hell.
Needless to say I then proceeded to hammer test all of the cross beams only to find three out of the four to be severely degraded yet to the untrained eye they looked perfect. I regret not taking photos of the before and after but the after was a real eye opener.
It was almost as though white ants had eaten away like they do with wood which looks perfect from the outside but in reality is nothing more than a paper thin coating hiding the damage.
Back to Chivers with the now holey (appropriate for this time of the year) trailer – to say they were similarly shocked would be an understatement. We quickly agreed that repairs were simply not an option and Luke arranged for a brand new chassis to be constructed minimising the cost to me by reusing all salvageable elements of the old trailer. As you might expect the end result is brilliant – thanks Luke, on time and on budget but to those on this site just a note to look far more closely at your trailers as the hot dip finish might just be hiding a potential disaster in the making. I was lucky and that is the only word for it having towed the boat only weeks before down to Dunsborough – had one of those cross members failed you could bet the rest would have gone almost simultaneously risking dumping the boat on the road or potentially rolling the lot and putting lives at risk
Have a great and safe Christmas and holiday period all at Fishwrecked

Recovery Diver? Help Needed to Free a Cray Pot off Hillarys
Submitted by pongoz on Fri, 2012-12-21 12:39Gday,
I've managed to locate a pot lost a few weeks ago in the storm. Problem is its stuck hard on the outer reef in about 35 foot.
A couple of options - if someone's going to be diving in the area i can provide the details or i can take some guys out there to check it out and do a pleasure dive?
Anyway, any help appreciated?
Cheers

If I was actually able to compose my fury and refrain from getting out and killing the mad f#cker for the collisions, I'd have squashed him between the 2 cars as a panic "accident".

Karijini, Millstream, Karratha - May next year
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2012-12-17 14:25Planning a trip next May/June to Karijini - Karratha May/June next year.
Plan on stopping at Millstream and have been researching - some site mention fishing and having Recreactional Fishing licence - is this for freah water fishing. What can you catch there and what gear/lures to use?
Also planning a few days in Karratha - is there any boat charters and what type of land based fishing in the area?

Discovery 4
Submitted by bsir on Mon, 2012-12-17 09:36Hey Guys,
i am considering a new car to tow the boat.
My boat weighs roughly 2.5T, but I would like to be able to tow 3.5T in the future (maybe I'm dreamin').
I have seen some good feedback on the Jeeps, and they can tow 3.5T, other vehicles being considered are Landcruiser 200, but they are a bit pricey.
The Disco4 specs look OK (would probably go with the 2.7L diesel).
I'm not interested in a dual cab.
I intend to take a Disco and a Jeep for a drive, but would be interested in any feedback on the Discos, good or bad. As they are a landrover, the reliability is a concern, and a few forums raise this issue, as well as there suitability to tow well.
Thanks

GoPro advice
Submitted by Paul H on Fri, 2012-12-14 12:01Decided to get a GoPro camera (secret santa from me!!) for the boat and have a couple of questions.
Is the GP3 silver better then the white (white doesn't metnion image stabilisation whereas silver does).
only looking at mounting it the the rocket launcher etc for a cockpit view. Any one else have the white or earlier models and if using in a similar situation is the Image Stab, really needed for that type of mounted use.
Any mounts that can be swivelled/tilted??
Would a fish eye lens be better for a wider angle or would a normal lens suffice??
Cheers Paul
