America... land of the ?
Submitted by Righteo on Mon, 2012-05-07 21:47I just spoke to my old man who is spending 2 weeks in the big apple, of course he was on the look out for some fishing gear but after just speaking to him i wonder... exchange rate 1us$ = 92AUc? I thought buying through paypal and banks taking their % was bad enough (losing between 2 and 4c per transaction) but what a joke.
Its cheaper to buy from your computer than to travel to the states and buy first hand.
God bless you America.

Salmon Patties
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2012-05-05 21:54With salmon season well under way its salmon patty recipe time. When catching them as a pro we used to take one home each a week and make up batches and eat them on the beach next day and compare recipes
The best one I found was Knock the fillets and skin off a salmon, remove the red meat, cut in to chunks and into a pot to simmer untill it breaks up easily.
Peel and boil approximately the same amout of spuds until cooked
Peel and dice up 2-3 brown onions
When the fish and spuds are cooked, drain off the water and combine, mixing thoroughly, add the diced onions and about 1/4 cup of parmessan cheese and 3 eggs to bind it together.
Mould in to what size patties you prefer then coat in breadcrumbs and in to a hot frypan to brown them off for around 10 minutes.
Now sit back and enjoy what most people reckon are neighbour or mother-law fish

Saltiga lever drag 2 speed 35 gear noise?
Submitted by scano on Thu, 2012-05-03 20:29hi everyone,
In the throws of putting together a new combo for bottom fishing.
I have just purchased a Saltiga LD35 two speed. My only concern is that in high speed it seems to have alot of gear noise, where as in low speed it doesn't seem anywhere near as noisy.
I purchased it from my local tackle store brand new and I alway get great service there and would always recommend them to others.
I took it back and they checked with some other stores to see if they had the same reel in stock and asked if it had the same noises ( and it did)
My mate Bodie who i regularly fish with has the same reel however his was nowhere near as noisy even though it has been used around 6-8 times now.
so my main question is do others have the same reel with a similar type of gear noise in high speed?
or have you looked at or heard of a particular issue with these reels that can cause the issue?
as i said the store I bought it from are more than willing to exchange the item for either another reel or another product. They always do the righty to ensure their customers are happy.
I really just want to find out if others have had a similar problem with the new Saltiga lever drag 2 speeds?

Grand Vitara, X-Trail or Other?
Submitted by Craggles on Wed, 2012-05-02 16:05Gday all
It's time to start thinking about a new car for the family.
I have a budget of 30k which is my max.
I am looking for a decent family SUV and have come down to either of these (I think) and was hoping for some opinions maybe of owners or the more automotive inclined on these forums.
The car will be used by my other half (who has requested an automatic) to transport her and our 20 month old around. The plan is to add another kid at the end of this year (so will end up with two car seats eventually)
I would like to use the car occasionally on weekend fishing trips on sandy beaches down south (would always be going with a mate and his Landcruiser)
We do not buy cars regularly, we're more the type to buy a car and drive it till we need a new one. So something with atleast a reliable reputation is preffered.
Based on my budget it looks as though I can get a new in stock '11' plated Grand Vitara or X-Trail.
Both of them are nice cars, I'm leaning towards to looks of the X-Trail at the moment but the Grand Vitara does have the low range gear box and is likely going to be better off road from what I've read.
Before all you Landcruiser and Patrol owners say get a real 4WD they're out of my price range for a car of the kind of age I'm after, the missus will run into things with it and the fuel consumption is huge. I'm not wanting to do any crazy off road work, up and down a beach occasionally.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated, would be even better if someone can just make up my mind for me please :P
Other options I have considered are the:
Rav4 but from what I've read their offroad ability is one of the worst
Jeep Patriot but the room in them is lacking,
Jeep Cherokee, it's quite thirsty, I havent looked at on nor do I know much about them
Subaru Forrester, my parents have one and I'm just not a big fan of them
Cheers

The worst haircut you'll ever see!!
Submitted by reddo_crothers on Tue, 2012-05-01 21:05Yes, the photo is of me.
I used to have a pretty nice mullet, until one day when my mate decided to give the top a bit of a trim, and instead of using the usual 1-inch comb, he just shaved it bald.
The end reult reminded me of a chinese kung fu warrior.
Only kept it for a day or two before the back was cut off too.
What do ya think???

Fishing rod skins / wraps??
Submitted by scano on Tue, 2012-05-01 18:40Hi everyone,
Looking to add some extra bling to a couple of new rods I have on order. The first one being a daiwa interline and then another overhead that will be custom built on an xzoga blank.
I am interested in the idea of customising the blank with some effects or a look a bit out of the norm.
origonally though of perhaps getting a sticker company to print a design and add to the blank before applying laquer and guides ect.
had a bit of a google search and noticed you can buy wraps / skins that go over the plank prior to adding on the extra rod building bits.
my main question is does anyone know of a good website or supplier where i can track down some of these rod skins?
the only real one i have managed to find thus far is mudhole and they really only do butt wrap sections.
If any of you guys have looked into these or heard of a good place to buy such a product then i would love to get some info from you.
thanks
scano

Injuries are starting to hurt the Eagles
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2012-05-01 11:48Star West Coast forward Josh Kennedy will need surgery on an ankle he injured in last Sunday’s gripping victory over Richmond.
Kennedy landed awkwardly in a marking contest and, after consulting the medical staff and reviewing scans, it has been determined that he will need an operation to stabilise the joint later this week, which will sideline him for up to 12 weeks.
Forward line for WCE is where the injuries are happening, now with 3 key forwards out with injuries!

Saving a draft post
Submitted by CCC on Sun, 2012-04-29 10:19Hi Guys
Do you know of a way to save a draft of a post? I'm about to write a reasonable size post on my recent trip and want to do it over a few nights. Have in the past cut and paste what I have written into "paint" then saved. Next time I want to write more I paste it back into fishwrecked but sometimes it does not work that great??
Any ideas

Going cheap
Submitted by bod on Sat, 2012-04-28 13:44$195 million Tomorrow Never Dies stealth ship on the scrap market for $50,000.

The Sea Shadow would be just the business for anti-whalers. Or whalers, come to think of it. Picture courtesy US Navy
ACTIVISTS - this is the ship you're looking for.
As bidding stands, the Sea Shadow might be a bit of a bargain, too.
Just $50,000 will get you the ship that inspired the radar-evading vessel that was the base of evil media mogul Elliot Carver in the 007 film Tomorrow Never Dies.

Although it's likely to go for a bit more than $50K. The Sea Shaadow cost the US Defence Department - or more specifically, its research arm DARPA - a whopping $195 million to develop.
That was back in 1984, but the world didn't see the Sea Shadow for nine years. That's because it was loaded with the type of stealth technology that made the US Air Force's F-35 Lightning II so famous.
So, what do you get when you buy a $195m stealth ship from the US military?
Apart from the fact that it looks like the kind of thing the inventor of the word "awesome" was looking at when he first said "awesome", not a lot.
Because sadly, you have to scrap it.
"The ex-Sea Shadow shall be disposed of by completely dismantling and scrapping within the USA," the description on the sale item reads.
"Dismantling is defined as reducing the property such as it has no value except for its basic material content."

So basically, you get 499 tons of scrap metal. If it were all prepared steel, that's roughly $3m worth, so it's unlikely to go for $50K.
Oh, you also get to keep this rusty barge that houses it, and you don't have to scrap it.
But it does make a much bigger target for whalers.
