NZ south isalnd trout fishing
Submitted by Boppo on Mon, 2012-03-26 10:01Was reading an old Western Angler mag that had a great article on Trout fishing in some of the rivers in south island NZ. Looked awesome. Was wondering a couple of things...firstly, can you spin with lures in these rivers and secondly, when would be the best time to go?
Any info on the topic would be great

Boat detailers
Submitted by Cruise Control on Sun, 2012-03-25 15:18G'Day Guys
Looking for a recommendation for a good boat detailer. I am gradually doing a refurb of the boat and the last job is a good buff and polish of the upper decks and hull. Prefer a mobile guy rather than towing but will tow if need to. Glass is generally in good nick but with the cost of boats these days i want it to be as good as it can be.
Can anyone recommend someone who does good work?
cheers

fresh herring
Submitted by old salt on Sat, 2012-03-24 22:10I bought and ate some Albany caught frozen herring and loved them, as im fairly new to Perth I was wondering if there was any fish shops that sell them fresh south of the river? ill be char grilling the next batch. judging by the oily and very fishy taste they must make good strip baits as well i guess as they are not as mushi as pilchards?

For Those Driving up to Exmouth
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2012-03-24 17:12For those who are driving up to Exmouth for the comp please take extra care on the floodways around Carnarvon, we have had heavy rain and thunderstorms all afternoon dumping about 2+ inches of rain and going by the BOM radar there is more to come. Its been streaming down in a north/ south direction right along where the NW coastal highway runs.
I'd hate to hear of anyone let alone a member injured from having an accident from running into a full floodway on their way up.

Tantabiddi navigation aids in place
Submitted by bod on Sat, 2012-03-24 13:08Work to upgrade navigation aids at Tantabiddi (Ningaloo Reef)
Skippers approaching and departing Tantabiddi boat ramp day and night will benefit from a major upgrade of navigation aids.
The Department of Transport (DoT) has completed a project to install five new lit navigational buoys, including three port hand spar buoys and two starboard hand spar
buoys at Tantabiddi.
DoT Acting Marine Operations Director Ray Buchholz said the upgraded markers would better define and light the existing navigation channel for skippers using the
Tantabiddi boat ramp to access Tantabiddi Passage through the Ningaloo Reef.
"The project will significantly enhance recreational and commercial boating safety in this remote northern location," Mr Buchholz said.
The $85,000 project had been implemented as part of the DoT's 2011/12 Navigation Aid Capital Works Plan and had received funding from the Recreational Boating
Facilities Scheme.

Man walking from Rotto to Freo
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sat, 2012-03-24 12:32YEP thats right. heard on the radio this morning a bloke is going to walk, yes walk from rotto to freo to raise money for a charity.
i say good on him but he has to be crazy to do so. if he succeeds he will be the first to do so and probably the only one mad enough to try. he is doing it over 2 days.
so anyone out there watch out for a boat with a dive flag on it mooving at a slow pace as the bloke could surface any time for food or drink

Stolen boat RECOVERED!!!
Submitted by joe m on Fri, 2012-03-23 18:43Got the call this arvo from Warwick detectives with the news ive been waiting 3 weeks to hear...they have recovered my boat.
Was recovered from a property in gingin (that is only info i have been given) and a person has been charged with recieving stolen goods.
Damage report so far: Missing e pirb, canopy and plastics torn off, slight trailer damage and few bits and bobs missing.
sounder and gps recovered most of my tackle still there and no electronic damage that i have noticed so far. Was worried ignition system would have been tampered with as the keys are with me at all times. This also tells me they havent run my engine thank god.
Forensics spent the arvo brushing for prints so there is black dust over the entire boat. Besides looking like its been through a war zone the basics are still there and with a couple days love and affection and a few dollars it will be slaying dhuies in no time. oh yeah all numbers and hin plates removed.
just wanna give a big thanks to the Police department for their efforts and everyone else that kept an eye out. The police really did go above and beyond to find it. One Sargent (dont need to mention his name he knows who he is) kept me up to date and wanted the boat back as much as me...he is very keen boatsman. looking forward to having a beer and sharing some fishing stories with him in the near future.
Anyways off to Lano in the am to hunt some fish on a friends boat. Will post pictures on my return.
i will leave you with some pictures of what looks like a train wreck...tight lines guys!

Tuna Bar snacks..
Submitted by southcity104 on Thu, 2012-03-22 20:39Another batch done. This stuff goes down well after work with a few brews!
Striped tuna in canola oil with chilly and garlic.
Im still working on pulling the flavour out of the chilli as its just not hot enough
Tryed it with bluefin and yellow but stipeys are fine. As most tinned tuna is stripey.
The browny point days out at food fairs with the wife has its benifits as i found some chilli oil which works well
I got the recipe 2nd hard so its still not perfect.
Boil the tuna until cooked through.
Place pieces on a wire rack and put in the oven the evaporate excess moisture.
Prep jars, (sterilize)
Add garlic, chilli and tuna into jars, pack down and add canola oil.
I use canola as other oils solidify in the fridge
Then chill in the fridge.
I did here that its better to soak the tuna ina brine but im unsure of this process.

Any mortgage broker here?
Submitted by Likc on Thu, 2012-03-22 14:48I was wondering if any FW member is an independent mortgage broker specialising in commercial real estate and would be willing to help. (Or if anyone can recommend a good one). Few of my mates are looking into buying a factory unit through their business and are sorting out their finance. I think that their bank is not treating them well, they’ve been loyal good customers for years but the bank’s attitude is BS, if you ask me, so I thought I will ask around and pass contacts on them. Thanks.

strangest looking fish you caught.
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Thu, 2012-03-22 14:15Just wondering about some of the strange looking fish that have been caught , not just locally but north and south, for that matter anywhere at all.
Mine would have to be from the book Sea Fishes of Southern Australia, is a frog fish, however i tried to google it but none of the ones on there looked anything like it. mine was reddish color with loads of small purple blotches all over it. looked quite good with the colors but strange, got this out from rocko a few years back
sorry cant find the pic of it i had, its somewhere buried in this computer and me being me havnt got a clue where to start looking

Diver with the bends
Submitted by Iceman on Tue, 2012-03-20 10:34On Sunday got an urgent call from a diver advising his buddy was suffering chest pains after a second dive 5nm of Hillarys. Went out at speed took 10 minutes to get there. When we arrived he had lost use of his legs and was in a serious condition. Once onboard stabilised him and made it back to Hillarys to waiting ambulance, travel time 8 minutes. Had to travel through Hillarys at speed. Thanks to all the vessels coming out who got out the way.
Ambo's worked on him for 30 minutes before taking him to Freo and the Hyperbaric (spelling?) chamber.
Called to hospital yesterday who advised he was out of the chamber and in a stable condition.
It was a great outcome. The Fast Response Naiad showed its worth. Overall a busy day Sunday and did not get home until 9.00pm

Jim Stynes RIP
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2012-03-20 08:35Jim Stynes loses brave cancer battle
Football legend Jim Stynes has died after a long and brave battle with cancer.
He was just 45.
It marks the end of the extraordinary two-and-a-half year health battle shared far more openly than anybody could have expected.
But his inspiring fight for life came to an end in private and as he would have wanted - with wife Sam and children Matisse and Tiernan by his side.
It was an intimate and hugely emotional end for the man who earned himself a place in the hearts of almost every Victorian.
Put simply, there was nothing bad to say about our Jim.
Tributes are already flooding in for the Irishman who made an indelible mark on the Aussie game by becoming the first international player to claim the prestigious Brownlow Medal.
He was also an Order of Australia recipient and a Victorian and Melburnian of the Year.Stynes will be farewelled at a state funeral after his family accepted the offer of one from the Baillieu Government.

Scammers at it again!
Submitted by Buz on Mon, 2012-03-19 21:50On the way home from work today heading south along Alexander Dve stopped at the lights to go under Reid Hwy. Had the window up, aircon going and tunes cranking. Then i hear this oi mate coming from a guy in the passenger seat of a WHITE VAN beside me. Wind my window down and ask what he wants. And right there and then at a set of lights waiting for them to go green he started to try and sell me a 'cheap good quality' home speaker/entertainment system. Hahahahahaha, after reading the posts on here a while ago, i knew exactly what he was on about. Basically said not interested mate. He persisted a bit then i basically said you'll have no bites from me mate. Lights then went green and as traffic started to move off i was looking to try get his rego. But he was maintaining speed beside me(even though i was purposely accelerating slow to let him get in front of me so i could see it), i am guessing so i couldnt get his rego. But i had to turn left so i slowed right down and he tried to accelerate really quickly away. Glad i still have good eyesight.
