Double dipping on Crays
Submitted by Iceman on Sun, 2011-12-11 19:26Whilst on the rescue boat yesterday I noticed a vessel with Hookah system (on the bow) leave Mindarie Marina in the morning. Then in the afternoon I saw the same boat leave Hillarys. Seems to me they dived in the morning, dropped the catch of home and then went out again. went to different marina incase fisheries watching.
Saw them again this afternoon out of Hillarys.
Seemed to be a few dive boats heading out in the afternoon even when the sea breeze was in following perfect conditions in the morning.

Also - does anyone know of a place to buy it NOR. I live up Mindarie way.

They are working on grant applications for funding but its still down the track .
Word has it that golden trevs, mulloway, tailor and the odd shark mackie have been caught there lately plus the usual tiger hanging about.

Cape Cuvier trip
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2011-12-08 21:31Went for a trip with a mate to deliver an inspector to a bulk carrier anchored at Cape Cuvier yesterday.
While the inspector was on board we dropped a line over the side to pass the time. No bait on board so it was on with a trusty chrome slice and down to the bottom for a bit of jigging , no more than a minute later and up comes a dreaded NW blowie, lethal to eat but top bait. Off with the sides and down goes a couple of bottom rigs and a makeshift floater out the back in the hope of a mackie or tuna. Ian looked happy while pulling his fish in but the grin disappeared as soon as he saw what it was.
We were not able to drop a lure in on the run up and back due to time constraints but that will change next time out.
Pics show the cape as we arrived, Ian and his blowie, looking back towards the cliffs and a magic sunset on the way home.

Tuesday Funny...or maybe not
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2011-12-06 01:12The $3.8million motorway smash involving 8 Ferraris, 3 Mercedes, a Lamborghini, a Skyline and a humble Toyota Prius (which was in the wrong place at the wrong time)
Thirteen high-end sports car owners - and one driver of a Toyota Prius - were probably close to tears last night after a $3.8million motorway pile-up.
A single miscalculation from a Ferrari driver leading a convoy of sports car connoisseurs left a trail of twisted Italian and German metal trailing across this motorway in Japan.
Ten people were rushed to hospital after the smash on the Chugoku Expressway in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, yesterday afternoon, but none of their injuries were said to be serious.

Not so sporty now: Japanese police and rescue teams investigate damaged Ferrari cars at the site of a traffic accident.

But the damage to their wallets may be far more grievous. Among the wrecked vehicles were eight Ferraris, three Mercedes, a Lamborghini, and a Skyline, as well as a Prius hybrid that was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The trailing cars then proceeded to crash one by one, with the ensuing carnage closing down the express way for six hours while emergency services cleared up the mess.

The cars involved in the epic smash included at least two Ferrari F430s, two Ferrari 360 Modenas, two Ferrari F355s and a Lamborghini Diablo.
There was also a Nissan Skyline GT-R - the only current Japanese supercar - and two Mercedes Benz, while the cheapest involved in the crash was the Toyota Prius hybrid.

Written off: Sports Nippon estimated the value of the vehicles involved in the crash to be 300million yen ($3.8million)

Good news for Cockburn Crabbers
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-12-05 15:06Cockburn Sound crab stocks continue to recover
Continuing improvement in recruitment and stability of crab stocks in Cockburn Sound has led to a further easing in restrictions there, since the crab fishery was reopened two years ago.
Department of Fisheries’ Principal Management Officer (Southern Bioregions) Dr Kim Walshe said recreational fishers would have a longer season and a range of changes to assist commercial fishers would come into force, when the new crab season begins in the Sound in mid-December.
“The decision to close the crab fishery in Cockburn Sound between 2006 and 2009 is paying dividends, with researchers reporting a much improved status for both juvenile and older blue swimmer crabs which allows for the easing of some of the restrictions,” he said.
“We need to remain vigilant to ensure the sustainability of the fishery, but careful management has helped the recovery and the improvement is a heartening bonus for both recreational and commercial fishers.”
For recreational crab fishers there will be a four month increase in the length of the Cockburn Sound season, which will run from 15 December 2011 to 31 August 2012. The State-wide 127mm minimum size limit for blue swimmer crabs and the West Coast Bioregion bag and boat limits continue to apply.
The changes for licensed commercial fishing operators will be:
- Decreasing the commercial minimum legal size limit for male blue swimmer crabs from 135mm to 130mm; (female size stays at 135mm);
- A commercial season from 15 December to 15 June (an extra 2.5 months); and
- Increased time to set and pull crab pots – now 3am to 3pm daily fishing time.
Dr Walshe said that recreational fishing activity for crabs occurred mainly around the fringes of Cockburn Sound, while the commercial operators generally fished in the deeper waters.
“I am pleased that the peak bodies for recreational and commercial fishers are supportive of the changes and that they understand the imperative to continue monitoring the status of crab stocks through Department of Fisheries’ research,” he said.
“The fishery has come a long way since 2006 and the new rules will ensure the rebuilding phase continues. The Department of Fisheries will work with fishers to closely monitor impacts of this season’s new controls and review the suitability of the measures prior to the season for 2012/13.”

DoF Lobster research project
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-12-05 10:23Robots track lobsters for important habitat research project
Small waterproof robots, designed to be attached to lobster pots, are being built and deployed for new research, to examine and monitor the marine habitat of Western Australia’s iconic rock lobster species.
The project, focusing on the western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus), is being made possible through $115,000 funding from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).
Department of Fisheries WA Senior Scientist Dr Simon de Lestang said the research added to a suite of projects that had been examining the potential causes of record low settlement numbers for juvenile rock lobsters (puerulus) in recent years.
“We have developed the project in consultation with the Western Rock Lobster Council and it is aimed at developing a cost effective tool to help researchers and fishers understand more about the habitat of the species,” Dr de Lestang said.
“It will enable underwater mapping of lobster habitats and determine its associations with lobster abundance and size composition.
“The robotic cameras, attached to rock lobster pots and float lines, will open a new window and insight into underwater communities between Shark Bay and The Capes.”
Dr de Lestang said the water proof robots were fully programmable.
“The can collect GPS information, while they are aboard a vessel, they can detect when they’ve been deployed in water and automatically activate a camera to capture high definition vision of a lobster pot’s decent to the seabed and later record water temperature and more vision at various intervals while the pot is sitting on the bottom,” he said.
“There is a real need for a cost-effective approach to collecting oceanographic and habitat information and we believe these POTBots (Pictures Of The Bottom) will be very useful.
“This project will develop and implement a system capable of providing constantly updating, geo-referenced, environmental data, including information on the composition of benthic (sea floor) habitats.
“While the initial focus will be on the West Coast Rock Lobster Fishery, this technology is potentially transferable to other fisheries in the State and monitoring and documenting ocean habitats to measure impacts of climate change.”

To top it off i was at my girlfreinds little sister's 3yr old bday party in myalup yesterday and we were about to head out the back with all the kids to play on the jumpy castle and we spotted a nice sized Tigersnake on the lawn. New rules proposed for the Swan/Canning
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-12-01 14:59Proposed riverpark changes released
Speed restrictions, changes to water ski operations and closing some areas to motorised vessels are features of a proposed new management plan for the Swan Canning Riverpark.
Releasing the plan for a three-month comment period today, Transport Minister Troy Buswell and Environment Minister Bill Marmion encouraged river users to provide feedback. Mr Buswell said Sharing the Rivers - Swan Canning Riverpark Aquatic Use Review and Management Framework Draft Report followed an 18-month consultation with user groups.
“Vessel activity has increased significantly since many of the existing management arrangements came into effect, with the number of registered private vessels in the metropolitan area growing from 36,000 to 53,000 in the last decade alone,” Mr Buswell said.
“This growth is expected to continue, placing further demands on the waterways. The new plan will help ensure future use does not jeopardise the health and amenity of the riverpark.”
Key changes proposed as part of the riverpark’s management plan include:
• 5-knot speed restriction area upstream of the Fremantle Rail Bridge, Mosman Bay, Freshwater Bay, Mt Pleasant, Matilda Bay, Maylands and inshore sections
• 30-knot maximum speed limit (sunrise to sunset) in areas not subject to a 5-knot limit
• realignment of the water ski areas at Belmont, Mt Pleasant and Point Walter
• prohibit personal water craft from operating or transiting on the Swan, upstream of Windan Bridge and on the Canning, upstream of Canning Bridge
• introduction of closed waters - motorised vessels at Preston Point, Freshwater Bay, upstream of Riverton Bridge and the southern passage between Ron Courtney and Garvey Park at Redcliffe
Environment Minister Bill Marmion said the new plan and improved management framework promoted the safe, equitable and sustainable use of the riverpark into the future.
“Feedback received in relation to the Sharing the Rivers plan will be considered ahead of the introduction of the proposed changes for the 2012-13 boating season,” Mr Marmion said.
“The riverpark is a highly valued community asset and is enjoyed in many different ways including boating, swimming, paddling and fishing. The implementation of a comprehensive management plan which has been developed in partnership with the community is vital in ensuring the future of this wonderful asset.”

Wednesday funny
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-11-30 09:43Cops escorting Cold Chisel caught speeding- 45kms over speed limit
THREE police officers in Western Australia's southwest have allegedly been caught speeding while escorting Cold Chisel from Busselton airport to their concert venue and may face hoon and reckless driving charges.
According to police, the special convoy of a sergeant, senior constable and constable were requested by concert organisers late Saturday afternoon and was "carried out for safety reasons, was sanctioned with consideration to the influx of people to the Margaret River region for the concert, the South-West fire and leavers' week."
A marked police motorbike allegedly driving 45km/h above the 80km/h limit was captured on a speed camera at 3.50pm.
Two marked police cars with their lights on, carrying Barnes and other band members were also allegedly captured speeding by the multanova.
The motorbike was seized under hoon laws and released a short time later.
Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan has launched a full investigation into the incident.
"I want some explanation about why they felt that was necessary," he told ABC Radio."Under what circumstances would someone do speeds like that for any reason, not just for an escort?
"They will face the full weight of the law if it's found that they've committed offences."
All three officers will be interviewed by police today.
