Dodgy home theatre systems
Submitted by TAPOUT on Mon, 2011-10-24 21:16In the last 3 months twice I've had a white van pull up to me in shopping centre carparks asking if I wanted to buy a cheap home theatre system. It's all in packaging and brand new. They even show you a broucher and retail price. Now I know there little story they give you about how this deal came about is a load of crap so I told them not to bother talking shit. My question is has anyone bought one of these units and are they any good. As the deal is very tempting.

Drive on trailer fines
Submitted by carnarvonite on Mon, 2011-10-24 18:12Heard from a mate well up in Dept of Transport that they are thinking seriously about issueing fines for people who drive their boats on their trailers on DoT supplied boat ramps.
The prop wash carries all the dirt out from under the ramp base causing it to erode and become unstable and in time, cave in.

October 23, 2011
Marco Simoncelli has died after a horrific crash at the Malaysian MotoGP in Sepang, says BBC.
The Malaysian MotoGP was halted four minutes after the race began Sunday when Honda rider Simoncelli fell and was hit by Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.
The 24-year-old Simoncelli had his helmet knocked off in the accident, which occurred when the Italian lowsided from his bike at Turn 11.
His bike veered across the track and straight into the path of Edwards and Rossi. The race was immediately red-flagged.
Simoncelli, who was motionless on the track after the impact, had been fourth at the end of lap one.
Edwards also fell but escaped serious injury, while Rossi, on a Ducati, was able to return to the pits.

Setup in Bali .
Submitted by Shorty on Sat, 2011-10-22 18:00Got back from Bali a couple weeks back, left the day after the 14 year old was nabbed for drugs,on my last evening i headed down to Kuta beach to watch the sun go down,i got there late afternoon and pulled up a chair from one of the bars (spread out along the top of the beach they generally consist of three Eskys full of beer ,cool drinks etc managed by a bar tender)i pulled up a chair and a fellow from Perth and Adelaide also pulled up chairs and we ordered beers had a chat and a foot massage as the sun went down.
After about 1 1/2 hours and nobody around our immediate area we noticed a vial of what i now believed was hashish was just sitting on the sand between me and one of the other guys next to me,nobody knew how it got there or who it belonged to,,i believe it was thrown there from behind or one of the hawkers dropped it earlier.
I often wonder what thwe go was,,was someone waiting for one of us to pick it up then come in nabb us perhaps demanding a sum of money to sort the problem out ?
I thought it might be a fairly common thing tho i have not heard of it before,,i hear the dealers are in league with the police as soon as you make a buy they step in etc,,i posted this up on a Bali travel forum seeking answers but was accused of scaremongering .
My question is has anybody heard of anything similar to this, dropping drugs beside you at the beach or whatever,,i am not sure if its common or this was a rare event,,i still wonder what would have happened if i picked it up as i can't see an innocent reason for it being there,,

Attention Gun Owners
Submitted by scotto on Sat, 2011-10-22 17:49I was havin a chat with one of my old mans good mates today. Yesterday he returned from work to find his front door open and the garden hose in the house.
It turns out someone broke into his backyard shed, grabbed his blocksplitter (axe) and smashed open his front door with it. They then busted open his gun safe and stole 6 of his rifles, and completely smashed his ammo safe off the wall and took the whole thing. They used the garden hose to completely soak the inside of his house to apparently remove fingerprints, and then they put rifles and ammo in his missus's car and stole that as well.
He is the 3rd member of his gun club in less than 2 weeks to have this happen, and by the looks of current news ( the old dude that smashed a couple of gun thieves with a baseball bat) it is an increasing problem.
I would love to think that there is a bunch of guys that are now out to wreak havoc on the local great white population, but the reality is these guns are now in the wrong hands.

Artifical lawn
Submitted by wayneleech on Fri, 2011-10-21 10:46hi all,
I'm after some artifical lawn for a small area of the backyard. Does anyone know a good place to get it from (preferably NOR)? I had a look at the stuff in bunnings though the rolls are only 1.8m wide. I was hoping to find a supplier with 3m+ wide rolls so I don't have a join in it.
cheers

Xtreme Update.
Submitted by Xtreme Coolers on Thu, 2011-10-20 21:20Hi all
Just a quick note to update you all as to what is happening at Xtreme Coolers. We are now fully stocked after receiving the latest shipment. Fibreglass boxes are still impossible to get but the plastic range is fully up and running again. The website is being updated as we speak to show stock available and prices. Don't forget that all FW members receive a 10% discount on the website prices.
Now that the dimersal closure is upon us, the most popular boxes are the smaller ones. The new XT20litre has been popular over the past month. I have had the opportunity to test this myself. It kept my 15 beers cool for a good two days. This is a good result and i have been very happy with its durability, size and cooling efficiency. The other popular model at the moment is the XT27litre. The 27litre is a heavy duty cooler that hold 18 stubbies and a full bag of ice. It has been very popular with the squidders out there.
XT20litre beer cooler marble: $58.00 for FW members
XT27litre cooler marble: $83.00 for FW members.
Don't forget that Ryan at Oceanside Tackle and Marine is stocking some sizes in the range. Speak to Ryan in O'Connor about our boxes if you are in the area.
Our warehouse is in MT Lawley which is very central and is the place where you can view the full range of Xtreme Coolers from 20 to 260litres.
Speak to Dave on 0403978583 or PM any questions regarding your nexr purchase.
Oh yeah, a big thanks to Brendan, Harro, Dave and of course Liam for inviting me down to Dunsborough for a great day on the Dhus, snapper and sambos. Can't wait to get back.
Only 5 months to go until the exxy comp. Also looking forward to my first trip to Exxy.
Cheers

It's in Black and White - But surely can't be true!
Submitted by Paully on Thu, 2011-10-20 19:48 Apparently Collingwood are going to leave their state 5 times next season - yes that's right, you heard it here. Can you imagine the security breifing by cabin staff - that will ceratinly be a big operation, ensuring that the players are 100% sure where the emergency exits are (They wouldn't know otherwise, not having been on a plane for so long). I can see that DVT is going to be a major player in the health status of the players next season.

Night swimmer
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2011-10-19 21:47Got a phone call at 10 pm last night from the local coppers asking if we could get a rescue boat out to the jetty. Seems some one fell in while fishing and his mates had lost sight of him.
Anyway, no sooner than I'd arranged for a crew member to meet me at the boat when they rang back to say he'd managed to get to the ladder and his mates pulled him out. Bet he'd had eyes as big as dinner plates looking for the ladder and looking for the tigers that usually haunt the area at night.
It was a good feeling when I rang the decky cancelling the call out because it would have been in crap conditions with it blowing around 20-25 knots and in water that is again a dirty brown colour plus the recent search for the still missing prawn trawler decky in the back of our minds.

WA fisheries get top report card
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-10-19 20:31WA fisheries gets top report card
- Scientific monitoring research and assessment shows healthy fisheries
- WA has world-leading initiative with ecosystem-based fisheries management
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the latest State of the Fisheries 2011 Report showed the State Government’s management approach had been successful.
“The report contains detailed analysis of current fish stocks, plus their associated habitats and ecosystems being managed by the Department of Fisheries,” Mr Moore said.
“Given the comprehensive systems of fisheries management that are in place, fishing in WA generally does not present an unacceptable risk to fish stocks or to the marine, estuarine and freshwater ecosystems underpinning them.
“Notably, the fishing methods that may affect the habitat (for example trawling) are highly regulated with more than 90 per cent of coastline protected from these types of activities.
These activities are permitted under carefully managed conditions to protect the environment and ensure the sustainable supply of fresh fish to the public.
“WA is one of the first fisheries jurisdictions in the world to implement a management framework to consider all ecological resources and community values within various bioregions to determine what requires direct management intervention, so this is a very pleasing result.”
The Minister said the report also showed that the majority of the State’s significant fish stocks continued to be in a healthy condition.
“About 94 per cent of fisheries are targeting stocks where no additional management is required, to either maintain or reach acceptable egg production or breeding stock levels. In addition, 94 per cent of managed fisheries have catches considered to be appropriate based on the status of the stocks and the current environmental conditions,” he said.
“For example, the new management arrangements for West Coast Demersal Scalefish (including snapper and dhufish) have been successful in reducing the catch levels of these species by 50 per cent, which was required to ensure long term sustainability.”
Mr Moore said the report showed the overwhelming majority of WA’s fisheries had also been assessed as posing only negligible or minor risks to bycatch species, protected species, habitats or the broader ecosystem.
The Department of Fisheries also has a positive record of collaboration with industry and stakeholder groups and other science-based institutions.

Kill or let live..... Round 2!!
Submitted by scotto on Wed, 2011-10-19 19:52I got this forwarded to me from my brother today. He was in the 16th group of forwards (ie: it had already been forwarded 16 times)!!! It looks like the latest attack ruffled a few feathers with the surfers down south....
this is what was sent to norman moore, troy buswell, and barry house (not sure who that is though)
Dear Troy, Norman and Barry,
I am emailing you re my growing concern regarding the increasing shark incidents in our immediate waters and what many consider a total misconception of what the real situation is in our area….I have been surfing and diving in this area for over three decades and have not experienced anything like the current status….
Many believe the experts are ignorant to the facts….. are probably not giving a true picture of the current situation.
My colleague pulled the unfortunate boogie boarder out of the water recently after her husband rescued the guy at Boneyards.(Bunker Bay)
The board rider sitting next to her husband said on TV that the shadow that passed under him was the size of a car….that’s probably an apt description as apparently they pulled a tooth from the mans body that supports the shark to be in the 7 metre range….I don’t think Fisheries or local govt want that getting out…may affect tourism a tad! Maybe even prompt Fisheries to look into the cull that people who spend much of their time in the water here are calling for……
Also I believe that Rory Macaulay says that numbers are static and they are not territorial….another colleague of mine was talking recently with a pro fisherman who was a Pro Surfer for a while….and he was reported to have said that at least 60 whites were known reported to be off Rotto….currently……a mate of mine was chased by two at Garden Island whilst surfing three weeks ago…as well.
It would be interesting to know what numbers we have in our area?
Macaulay also said that all sightings were not being reported….I believe that’s true…and surfers and all ocean goers need to do so to get some attention to what guys in our area are saying is out of control….its pretty much a sighting a day at present, if not every second day, and that’s the ones that are being seen!
Two Italian surfers at south point Gracetwon on Sunday….site of Nick Edwards fatality….. had a seal come up to them only to have a two foot high dorsal fin come straight at them…….a close friend of mine saw it swimming off towards North Point…..the other side of Gracetown which was packed with surfers at the time….that afternoon a local had to madly scramble onto the rocks at South Point to get away from a huge shark that was hunting a seal….once again a seal appearing to use a surfer as protection.
Surfers raced out of the lineup at Avalon in Mandurah on Sunday as well with a sighting of another very large White…..
A local paddle ski rider on Friday…another reliable source…..was out paddling at Gnarabup and apparently fell off, so surprised at the size of the shark fin he saw near him….the beach was packed with holiday makers that day…a recipe for disaster….we have had regular sightings here and around Margs since last Spring….and all mainly Big Whites….Boranup, Redgate, Lefties, Margs, many at Grunters…. and its on everybody’s lips……they are not moving on as the experts are saying…………………….. and many here think that there may be a rogue in the area….. at Gnarabup beach… two years ago a 4.5m beached itself and just eye balled the Pengiun swimmers…..same area where a local ski paddler saw an absolute whopper on Friday!! Not good…..it was not reported in the media even though a reliable media source was part of that group..
They do seem to be returning to known food sources…an opinion widely held by many surfers, refuted by Fisheries even though there is wide evidence of tracking individual whites who have set patterns of travel…..surfers love the ocean and what it offers and as a rule respect the ocean and all its creatures……surfers , who spend a hell of a lot more time in the water than predominately office based experts and advisors have I would argue a better handle on what is going on in the area and deserve the attention we are asking for……
I personally nearly fell on one early spring after pulling off a wave at Margs….it was approx. 3 to 3.5 metres with a piece of Tuna in its mouth the size of a big leg of Ham……I managed to get the attention of the other guys in the water and we bailed….there were multiple sightings at Main Break that fortnight and the beach was closed several times as was Lefthanders where Brad Smith’s death occurred.
The belief that they are passing through is “not” widely held in the area by many at all now.
Seal populations have exploded in the area and are found in colonies all over now…local fishermen are saying they have seen nothing like it and in the past they dealt with them as it ruined fishing prospects…..many think the seal population is contributing to the Whites hanging about…and many will agree….on many occasions now, surfers will leave the water when seals arrive, particularly if they are behaving erratic, as the seals were on the days of all three deaths have occurred to date.
All three attacks, Brad Smiths, Nick Edwards and the young fellow at Boneyards all had seal sightings just prior to the attacks, and as with Nick Edwards attack and the two Italian lads at South Point on Sunday, surfers have commented that the seals appeared to be using surfers as a decoy for want of a better term….
I suppose I am sending you this as further support that the government needs to look into what seems to be an escalating problem, which will probably only get some positive action if we are unfortunate enough to have another fatality….with warmer weather upon us…numbers of humans in the water is about to explode, increasing the odds of another attack……..
….I think if there was a survey you would find a heap of support.
I am like Brett Hardy , quoted in Perth Now recently by Liam Bartlett 60 Minutes… up until the last 12 months or so I was of the opinion that we have to live with it…..but there seems to be too much evidence that numbers have escalated as has their habit of being so close to shore and humans.
We should at least be undertaking a significant tag and satellite tracking/warning programme…..I agree personally agree that a cull is overdue….
With tourists and locals saying its safer to travel over seas or over east to surf, or even relocate permanently, that is a true reflection of the level of concern people have about entering the water in our region now and the potential impact on our are could be very negative.
To quote a friend who pulled Nick Edwards out the water at South Point after being fatally mauled….. “ a dog attacks a small child or an adult…you put it down. A bear attacks a woman….you put down the bear and its cubs. A croc attacks a human you track it down and eliminate the problem.
But a shark attacks a human and we just let it swim about checking out what’s on the shelf?”
We all look forward to your positive response.
Cheers
Craig

Dhufish recapture
Submitted by Paul G on Tue, 2011-10-18 21:44Had a dhufish recaught out from two rocks on the 6/10/2011This dhufish was tagged on the 10/7/2011 it has grown 20mm still not sure if it has moved far or still on the same place first tagged .This dhufish was gut hooked and hooks left in fishes gut /throat.Snelled double hooks .It also had swollen gut and eyes were slightly bulging. We used a release weight to get it to the bottom 34mThis was one fish that had a small chance of servival. The fish was in good condition with no signs of hooks or being caught in the past. To grow 20mm one would think the fish has been eating well and the hooks have fallen out or rusted away .The hole in the gut repaired. To date this is the best recapture yet. Will post once I know if it has moved or not .

Stradic ci4 2500F vs Daiwa Freams
Submitted by scano on Tue, 2011-10-18 20:42Hi guys and girls,
I have just recently purchased a brand new stradic ci4 2500f but am in 2 minds as to wether or not I should already upgrade it?
I have been checking some specs on the net and bang for buck the Daiwa freams certainly look the goods.
according to the websites the 2500 ci4 reel has a 7kg drag but the line suggestion on the reel is max 10lb.
the Daiwa Freams 3000 on the other hand also states a 7kg drag but sugest's loading it with either 12,16 lb line or even pe 1.2.
I am mainly using this reel to be paired with a rod of about 15 - 18lb and will be using it to flick plastics around in exmouth for Coral Trout and Spanglies ect.
just wondering if anyone has a Freams reel as yet and how they find them?
suggestions would be great
cheers

shade sail posts
Submitted by wayneleech on Tue, 2011-10-18 17:56hi all,
I'm just putting up a shade sail in the backyard. I have to put a couple of posts up to hook the sail on. Does anyone know what post size is best to use? I was thinking of using 90x90mm pation tubing, or perhaps 100x100mm?
Also - does anyone know the cheapest place to get patio tubing from?

Would you be intrested
What sort of price would you expect to pay monthly
Would you be intrested in fishing comps with other users
Anything else you would want to see in such a facility
