Update on Gascoyne Fishtrapping Proposal
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2016-02-24 19:46Been a few emails coming in to the ones behind the protest informing them that there will be a meeting at 5 30 next Thursday 3/4 at the Woolshed venue here in Carnarvon so we can all voice our concerns direct to the Fisheries Minister.
This doesn't mean that you can stop sending in your emails to because there is still a very good chance the trapping will go ahead regardless of or opposition to it so please , if you haven't emailed in as yet pull your finger out and do it

Retrieved A Craypot.. illegally????
Submitted by sandbar on Mon, 2016-02-22 16:54Make of it what you will and hang me in court.
Found this adrift on the way in from FFB at the 1st stick on the way into peron ramp. On the way out it was not there, I only went out to check my own pot and coming in this bouy was in the channel. Well to me its a very well used bit of ocean. Watched it for a few minutes and was assured it was drifting. Pulled it and has about 15mtrs rope attached and the lower baton of a timber pot attached. The float has been smashed by a prop and I can vaguely make the numbers, hence i have not called fisheries yet. I can enlighten anyone who questions this as to why i haven't bothered.
Anyway what i make out is , 1st letter is R, Then D P orB, followed by 085, and the last number is chopped off. The floats and rope are distinct and would be easily recognised by owner so if you are the owner or know the owner PM me.

How'd you go today?
Submitted by Swompa on Sat, 2016-02-20 22:34Headed out today with a couple of mates from woodies point at 0800 ish thismorning. Drifted the weed beds between woodmans point and south mole over the next two hours resulting in two squid. Trolled a variety of deep divers between north mole and hall bank for nil. Fished hall bank for skippy and managed to land some 40cm gardies which were fat. Never seem the, so fat.
Out to the windmills for 10 or so sand whiting over an hour and a half. Not too many big ones.
Over to stragglers and I had a quick swim on a lump for crays whilst the guys fished. Managed three crays in 5 mins before a trawl for herring. Could see the, but not interested.
Next to Mewstone which resulted in one herring after a few laps.
Skipped to Carnac for zip though a fuel top up before Pig Trough bay. The guys fished and I chased some crays. Managed one size and a monster cuttlefish on a snare, Massive school of snook though they weren't interested.
Total for the day was two squid, four gardies, to whiting, a herring, four crays and a big cuttley. A wide variety though over 7 hours, we did the miles.
Curious us to know how everyone else found it? Plenty of wrasse around though the edibles were fussy.

Submitted by Cruise Control on Fri, 2016-02-19 16:12Just picked up my second prize for the free raffle tickets handed out by Oceanside on the Sunday of their anniversary sale. Not only did I get a fantastic deal on my purchases but then I picked up a great Pfleuger tackle bag and a new set of lip grips.
Cheers to Ryan and the boys.

footy's back
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2016-02-19 12:20It's been a long wait, but now its time.
Excited to see how a few players have developed and a few new recruits over the coming weeks.
Was also reading with interest about the dockers new training facility in cockburn. Looks like some pretty hi tech stuff available to them and they could be training on the oval as soon as april.
Arh! Bring it on!

Hull I.D?
Submitted by sandbar on Thu, 2016-02-18 20:21Just wondering if anyone can ID this hull? Its 1800mm X 500mm. Found it at the recycle plant in Rockingham, fresh of the truck. I got it for a few bucks.
So I decided to do a "restoration" and turn the old girl into a Scotch/Wine rack.
I would like to know its history/reason of being built. Its solid fibreglass and had pencil marks of where someone was going to install the ribs. I am wondering if Ol mate was gonna bolt a whipper snipper motor in it and race it? Any way this is my progress so far after 2 days work. Yet to make a Keel for it to stand up and a board lenght ways across the transom to stop it tipping sideways. This has cost a whole $10 so far. Everything i am using is scrap I have lying around.
Help with prank
Submitted by Comrad on Wed, 2016-02-17 13:46Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if you could help me with ideas for a bit of a prank I'm planning on a guy at work. The basic premise is that I'm going to get him to call a number thinking he's calling someone back about an exciting opportunity, etc... but in actuality I'll give him a number for someone else.
I'm hoping you can help me with ideas of who to call. I want it to be somewhere that its immediately apparent from the moment they answer the call that its a wrong number, if it takes too long, then there's confusion and its not as funny. Pretty much any number is up for consideration, but, it has to look like a normal phone number (not 1300 style numbers, etc...), and it can't put a charge on the call since he'll likely be using the work phone.
I was thinking something either really embarrassing like an escort place or something, or even better, something a little scarier, where he'd feel more uncomfortable about having to deal with it, like the federal police or national security hotline or something.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Fish trap introduction
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2016-02-16 08:05For those that want more info on fishtraps go to You Tube and type in Fish traps explosive decompression, either part 1 or part 2, this will give you a bit of an idea on why we are in opposition to the introduction of them in to the Gascoyne region.
Please send an email off to or to you local member of parliament voicing your opposition, the period ends on the 24th Feb so don't hesitate and do it now

Finally got a new (old) boat!
Submitted by clueless on Sun, 2016-02-14 16:10Thanks to all whos has been answering my many many questions on many different boats over the past 6months. As a newbie to boats it was such a daunting task picking a boat with minimal budget! Having little idea about any boats made choosing hard, and some times I spat my dummy out and said 'Duck it, ill never get one!'
Anywho I got one today for a really good price (I think), old savage osprey 480. :-)
Hull an trailer seem in very good condition and the old johnno 70hp ran very smooth on the water. So if anyone recognizes the boat on the river / cockburn sound give me a wave :-)

PLEASE READ
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2016-02-14 06:21Please read the thread about fishtraps being introduced in to the Gascoyne region as this will affect everyone who regularly fishes from boat or shore from south of Steep Point and right through to north of Coral bay.
It will allow the pros to drop their traps right in close to the ledges for baldies, on snapper schooling grounds, all the small lumps that we regularly catch red emperor without restrictions. The proposal has been rushed through with only a couple of weeks for public comment but some in the know have already stated it has been passed.
Traps were banned from the west coast some twenty five years ago for good reason and now this govt has seen rise to bring them back because the pros have come up with a 20% loss of total hooked catch to sharks when actually from one of my sons account [who has worked on wetliners in this area for the last 4 years] is nothing near as high as stated.
The Govt proposal to reopen the Northern Shark Fishery from NW Cape through to the NT border will have no effect on this area of the coast so please send off your emals to as soon as possible as submissions close on the 24th Feb

That empty feeling
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Wed, 2016-02-10 12:50Sold my Barcrusher during the week - sure does give an empty , hollow feeling as someone else drives away with the big girl.
Lucky I have the little dinghy, but just isn't the same.
So if anyone is looking for a deckie on the weekends out of Mindarie or close to, let me know as I'm certainly not new to boating, enjoy a good laugh and respect others and their gear, and more than happy to share expenses for the day.
Also happy to share a few spots if needed.
Cheers

Plumber (Tap specialist) needed
Submitted by Madmerv on Fri, 2016-02-05 19:42I have a cold shower tap that the seat has washed out in.
I also have a seat grinder, hand operated, that i have used to smooth out the seat. The problem i'm having is the seat keeps washing out in the same area and i cant see why.. Is there a flaw in the tap? Is the cheap seat grinder just not doing the job properly in the first place?
Advice would be good but any plumber with experience in this problem, who would like to stop in on the way home amd have a look, for a few beers, would be better.
NOR Kingsley.

Sea Snake on prop
Submitted by carnarvonite on Fri, 2016-02-05 13:44In response to the thread showing the shark wrapped around a boat prop and as I don't know how to add pics to an established thread, here they are.
Coming back from a trip to the islands off Carnarvon and I spotted the sea snake second s before we ran over it, no bump, noise or any vibration, wasn't discovered until we were washing the boat down when we got home

Cheap Battery Insurance
Submitted by JohnF on Fri, 2016-02-05 12:37Got one of these cheap Chinese ebay lithium battery jump starters after flattening one of my batteries at Rotto over Oz day. I got the boat started on the second battery but it got me thinking how traumatic it could be if you were out wide and for some reason the battery was not good.
For A$102 delivered, you get a meaty 68 Ah lithium battery with built on LED flash lighht, charger for laptops and iphones and 600 cranking amp jump starter that easily started my car, so should get the V-Rod going in case of emergency. All comes in a nice carry case that is very small, all up les than half a kilo, looks good quality, the Chinglish instructions are a bit of a laugh though.
You can get ones much smaller but they have less Ah and less cranking amps, I wanted something with a bit of oomph. It spun my race car motor over faster than the main Odyssey battery and started it easily (by itself, Odyssey disconnected) after 9 months of the car sitting in the shed!
