One for the auto-marine sparky/ safety gurus out there: Using a jump starter battery pack to start outboard?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Fri, 2015-09-11 07:23Hi all
I usually carry a 12V/ 17 amp hours 900 amp battery jump starter pack in the boat as a safety measure in case I have issues with my dual batteries, and have been thinking about the actual usefulness of it lately as I haven’t had the need to use it as yet, touch wood.
The main questions/ concerns I have are:
- Would this model pack have enough “kick”to start my Yammy 150 if the other batteries did die for some reason?
- If I did have to use it, should I connect it to the battery itself or unhook the batteries and attach the alligator clips straight to the battery leads?
- Is there any potential for doing damage (major or minor) to the outboard (fuses/ computer etc) if I were to use the pack?
- If not enough power to start the outboard, I assume it would still give me enough charge to make radio calls to other boats/ sea rescue etc? Would obviously turn off all other electrics- sounders, gps etc before trying this
Thanks in advance for any answers you guys can give

Drone in Cockburn Sound
Submitted by Dreamcatcher on Wed, 2015-09-09 23:01Fellow Fisho's. I witnessed one of those professional type 8 prop drones plunge into the drink just off the car park area at Woodman Point this afternoon, about 1:30pm Wed 9th Sept. We asked a jet ski owner to have a look but he could not find anything. The electronics and camera will be wrecked but the owner is pretty keen to get it back and salvage what he can. If anyone drags it up on a squid jig or snapper line can you please drop it off with the Cockburn Sea Rescue guys as they have the owners contact details. Thanks

$800 to service 3 saltigas ouch. whats your opinion
Submitted by bailey024 on Tue, 2015-09-08 03:21Ive just had a z6500 saltiga, a 5500 saltiga and a 6500 saltiga in for what i thought would be a nice service but turned into needing full rebuilds on all three reels. My thought is why the f#@k am i spending big dollars on reels for them to need full rebuilds after they get a few fish i thought thats why we spend $1200 on a reel so we dont have to spend again,I can understand the z6500 getting rebuilt because its 8yrs old and it has caught alot of good fish compaired to the other 2 that are 2 and 3 yrs old and barely see the water as much as they should. To say the least i am very pissed off and starting to think i should have stuck with my stellas. Whats your opinion should i have the shits or is this exceptible from a saltiga because im starting to think it might be if all three needed the samethings replaced.

Floor for tinny
Submitted by NORUN NOFUN on Mon, 2015-09-07 12:24Gday guys,
Bought a little 390 explorer and wanting to fit a floor.
Im getting the supports made up and will weld in at some stage, so the floor will be roughly 100mm off bottom.
Not a fan of the floor they come with, these practically sit on the bottom of the hull.
My question is : What size plywood should I use ? Is 12mm to small or should I go 18mm ? I'm thinking 18 but also after opinions.

Ally fabrication/ repair NOR ?
Submitted by oz74 on Mon, 2015-09-07 09:55HI All,
looking to get a couple of minor repairs done to the boat if anyone has some recommendation of who to use NOR?
it will be a small repair job to an ally hull (looks like cutting a little bit of electrolysis out and re-welding in a plate/ patch)
cheers

and expert licencing gurus ot there
Submitted by petermac on Wed, 2015-09-02 20:35I took my , Triton (motorcycle) down for rego today and it was knocked back , first told it dosnt have indicaters, my reply they didn't have them in 1963 , its a strange looking bike what is it , a Triton , never heard of them , well you wouldn't have its a custom built bike a cross between a Norton and a triumph, nahh well not regoing that mate . what makes me mad is the fact that my 1934 rudge and 1962 Norton dominator are on full rego , and yet my triton whould be the best handling and braking of the 3 of them do I just make up a dodgy number plate or what , I could swap the plate from my dominator and the cops would never know , but I shouldn't have to do that

AFL FINALS knockout tipping comp 2015
Submitted by Deleted on Mon, 2015-08-31 07:51Chasing a minimum of 10 punters who want to enter into a knockout AFL finals tipping comp.
$5 to enter, payable into my netbank account prior to the bounce of the ball first final Friday night 11/9/15. Winner takes all.
Rules:
Put your tip in this thread and I'll edit them into the post at the top of this thread each round. Tips arent usually secret in this type of comp.
You must tip one team (one team only) that you think will win in the first round. If your team loses you're out.
Correct tippers move onto round 2.
You cannot tip the same team twice during the comp i.e. if you think Freo will play off in and win the GF you cant tip them in the first 3 rounds.
Strategy and luck is required.
Last punter standing wins the total pot.
If we have multiple tippers still alive in the Grand Final round, we will also include a margin for that game to discern the winner. Closest to the pin will win the prize.
Who's keen?
Enter your names below.
once we have the numbers i will PM everyone bank details, remember money will have to be in account before the first final or confirmation of transfer to participate.

What boat would you buy with 30ish thousand?
Submitted by Josh on Tue, 2015-08-25 19:48Hi Guys
I am looking at buying a new second hand boat, and was wondering what you would buy if you had 30k or so in the kitty to invest.
Things that are on my list so far are:
- 5-6m or so
- solo launch and retrieveable
- thinking alloy because I don't have a shed big enough
- swaggable for nights at rotto
- fish 4, cruise 8
- I like the cuddy/cab style, somewhere to hide dry.
I used to have a trailblazer 5800, and definitely regret selling it!
Any Gumtree warriors out there with recommendations? I do have my eye on one up north, but it's a fair bit of a drive. Just wondering what you would drop the cash on?
Cheers
Josh.

Private Boat Leasing/Rental
Submitted by nesbar12 on Wed, 2015-08-19 21:29Hey guys, thinking about a concept to connect skippers without boats with owners willing to lease their rig. Assuming insurances can be covered off, what are your thoughts regarding peer-to-peer leasing (Air B&B style) of your boat for a few extra $$$ to cover your fuel bill, boat rego, maintenance, etc? How many (good) days a year could your boat be made available to do this? What sort of $$$ would you want for leasing your boat? What reservations would you have?
How about those of you who have a skippers ticket but no boat - how likely would you be to rent a boat on a peer-to-peer basis? What sort of $$$ would you be prepared to fork out for a good day on the water in the boat of your choice?
Speaking for myself, I have an old 19' Guardian on trailer with a smokey 175 Johnson on the back - not pretty but great for a day's fishing off Two Rocks, out back of Garden Island, Rotto, or squidding off South Beach. I'd be happy to get $150 a day if someone wanted it.
Please let me know your thoughts.
