Junior Landbased Entry 18kg Mulloway Narrows bridge-Flangies SOR =p
Submitted by flangies on Sat, 2008-11-15 04:02Ok we made it to the narrows around 8:20 pm where we started using dead scalies and boney herring as slab bait and soaked them well. After a few hours we tried our luck on tailor with some lures and SPs to much success, about 10 30cm-40cm Tailor and many smaller ones aswell.
I chucked out a live tailor about 30cm in size just left on the bridge where i suspected a drop off and continued to fish for tailor on SPs. At about 12:30am (rising tide) the two other fisherman with us informed me that my rod was going bezerk.. So i ran to it, slowly lifted my rod.. Waited, waited.. Then a slow run.. I tightened my drag, leaned back and closed my eyes.
30 minutes later i had landed an 18kg 130cm Mulloway.
Removed the hooks, took a few photos and bled it for home.
The rig i was using was Rovex 7500 running 30lb platil to a 60lb jinkai leader with two snelled 7/0 Gama circles.
Photos to be put up later tonight.
Thanks To original teenage for jumping in the water (shoes on) and picking up my fish :)

Mud crabs Karratha Style
Submitted by Bodie on Thu, 2008-11-13 14:33Spent the weekend just gone up in Karratha.
Unfortunately the winds were blowing like no tomorrow (Sunday was not too bad), so we decided to head up the creeks for a littlke action in the tinny.
Managed about 15 muddies over 2 days, and Sunday dropped 2 Barra (First ive hooked, and first ive seen) but didnt last more than 10 seconds each.
was flicking lures about, also got hit a coupld times by jacks and saw a few threadfin salmon?? think thats what they are follow the lures in.
Was in the cossack creeks, man that place is alive on a changing tide. fish everywhere!!
Managed a couple catfish and bream in the crab nets which was different.
Also heres a few creek shots aswell.
Was humming around in a 14ft tinny with a 40hp merc on the back :) good fun that was....shallow creeks in some parts!!!

went down yesterday and arrived at 5.30...... bit later than i had of liked but we got there. fished the night for a few hours and picked up a nice 31cm king george whiting from the gazebo on the bend. went to sleep and woke up early to pack up the tent. got out about 9ish and i caight a red gurnard. moved up to find a few gardies... didnt bother with em tho. we walked up to the dodgy jetty near the UWO gates. it was swaying everytime a wave came past but we were catching herring and skippy. burleyed up heaps and soon after we had a plethora of herring skippy and trumpeter milling at our feet. unweightede peice of squid and we hooked up a lot. got plenty of skippy and a couple of herring with one being anice plump bull. about 20 minutes before we were sposed to leave, we saw some baitfish jumping. minutes later i hooked up to a nice big tailor. with a bit of a struggle we got him up and measured him...42cm my new PB and just over a kilo. dad hooked up seconds after to one that was bigger but he lost it to the pilons...
FINAL CATCH
8 good size skippy out of over 20 with only one undersize
2 herring ( one bull herring)
one good KG
one good tailor

Nice Day Out 2/11
Submitted by Tim on Fri, 2008-11-07 22:53Finally got out for a fish on Sunday 2/11 after not getting out for about a month.
It was our clubs first comp of the year and headed out with Scott (Mexican) from the club.
As we hadnt been out for a while we were deciding on where we should head. As the conditions werent bad and forecast to get better we decided to start around the 90m line. I picked a point I had marked a while ago while travelling through the area as a starting point for the day and headed off. The trip out wasnt bad and we managed to cruise out comfortably at around 20knts.
Once near the mark we slowed and all this ground started to show up.we circled around a bit to work out the area and set a drift on a likely looking patch.
Scott was first down and it wasnt long before he was on. First drop and a nice double of a pinky and Dhu.
While Scott despatched his fish I dropped and had an instant hookup. Another double header. This time a Pinky and a Red Snapper of around 2kg.
Was a good start to the day with 1 drop each and 4 fish on the boat. Wepulled in the sea anchor and went over for another drift. The wind was moving around and changed our drift but we were still over good ground so we just went with it. This drop we both got a Dhu each including my new PB.
We did a couple of more drifts in the area and picked up a few more fish including a Dhu sent back on the release weight. By 9am we had a good selection of fish in the esky and had also caught a good chunk of our personal limits as well. We decided we would stop fishing for these sorts of fish now and decided to head out deep and do a bit of exploring and try out the new broadband sounder. A quick look at the chart and with a spot picked we headed out to the 300m line.
We spent the rest of the day out in the deep water and picked up about 3 million green eyed sharks but also got a flatty of just over 2kg and a nice pinky for Scott.
Finished off the day after that with a few nice deepwater species to round the bag out. We found a heap of new ground out there as we planned to do and covered about 20km while looking for it as well.
Just one of those days when a couple of early fish take the pressure off and you can really havesome fun.

KYLE'S FIRST SQUID
Submitted by STAAL LOVER on Sun, 2008-11-02 12:23Took the rug rats out for a squid this mornin' !! Being on my own with them it took some timing to put the boat in and get them ready. But everyone at the ramp was very patient and we got away well !!!!
Hit the weed patch and got the girls jig down first. Then down went the boys !!! I was tying my jig on when Kyles rod bent over and a few excited screams came from both. I held the butt of the rod and had him reel it in !!!!! HE WAS WRAPPED !!!!!!
We did a few drifts and I got 3 of my own before we had to go home!!
A quick photo with the catch .
They had a great morning and will probably nag me to death about doing it again soon!!!!

Crabbing news.
Submitted by SPESS on Sat, 2008-11-01 15:30Well with the purchase of the new tinnie i thought id try and get out to get some crabs. Ive been out 2 or 3 times now in the swan around mossy bay and claremont with some luck. Im finding pretty good num, bers at the moment but the sizes are the ones too watch. Plenty that are just size or just under with the occasional thumper chucked in for good measure.
The blueys are quite full for this time of the year as well which is always a good thing. Ive been dropping pots in anywhere from 20 to 5 metres with all producing the same results. I just thought id do a quick report as many people have been asking me how ive been going. So here we go. Hope this helps SPESS.

white hills
Submitted by Jas04 on Tue, 2008-10-28 11:52Hey guys i went down to white hills on the weekend with ash06 on sat for a all night fish probably not the smartest move eigther of us had made due to the massive winds that night lol hahahahaha. anyway i braved it for a few hours really wanted to get a fish on the new outfit. so i was using strips of mullet on a running sinker after a few hours of nothing but cold wind i finaly got a hit was a nice gummy shark 1.2m in length a really nice one(i have photos put them up soon) after that we deciced to wait till the morning for some better weather. in the morning we where up around 7. straight away the big rods went out with some mullet while we cooked breakfast. with about an hour gone by i decided to see if any whiting or herring where around and sure enough as soon as the line hit the water we where catching them with ease with some going out as live bait. nothing really big to report had a big run one of the big rods but no solid hook up. i thought there would of been some good news when not one stingray was caught and i thought finaly i had broken that run of luck when wack big run by none other then mr ray lol
all in all it was a good couple of days done there and cant wait to get back.

26/10/08 Rockingham
Submitted by Simo_ on Mon, 2008-10-27 18:14
Went out for a fish on Sunday with my mate Graham. Started the day off in the 40s, got a 67cm Dhuie on the second drift. It was in good condition so I sent it back with the release weight. We moved around on a few spots getting Foxies and Black Arse also picked up an Ambo that went like a train. Then I got my first KG
it was a nice fat one too.
After that we headed out a bit further, then it was Grahams turn to get into some fish. First drop on the spot resulted in a nice pinkie and a missing hook. A minute later I pulled up a pinkie with line sticking out of its mouth haha. Next Graham got a Dhuie of about 57cm, also got a few more pinks (released) Graham got 2 queen snapper and a nice big red snapper.
Was a good day out and the KG was great eating

Creek Session
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2008-10-26 22:08Well unfortunately the wind didn't play the game this weekend and I was stuck in drydock. Twiddling my thumbs got boring after a while so late this arvo I hooked up with Kane and headed down Beadon Creek to see if we could find a fish or two. The weather and water has started to warm up noticeably in the last few weeks and theres been a corresponding increase in bait and surface activity. Kane enjoys his bait fishing and he proceeded to pick up a few bream and a good cod. Lure chucking is my preferred forte however and I proceeded to prospect along the rock wall. What followed was a great session as I nailed some small trevs, queenies, a couple of unexpected giant herring and a cracker jack (his brother took my lure home so the jack situation worked out even). Here's a few pics.

BROKE THE DROUGHT MR MAC
Submitted by STAAL LOVER on Sun, 2008-10-26 20:35Went out with the brother in-law and his mate today !!! It was supposed to be under 10knts and dropping !! Headed out and by the 5 fathom bank knew they had got the beginning wrong and hoped the wind would drop soon. WRONG AGAIN!!!!! Stayed over 10knots all morning and as we had to be back by lunch a few choice words were said dirrected at BOM!!!
Got out to the lump and set for the first drift. It wasn't more than 5 mins and the Bro was hooked to a fish. I could see it wasn't overly big so told him to slow his retrieve. A couple of minutes later a just size Dhuie hit the deck with the other two lines following!! A quick measure and a check on the Dhuie had me thinking of releasing it but it was blown a bit so in the esky it went. Lucky I did as it was the only Dhuie for the day!! (no picture as he didn't want me to show it to anyone)Good BBQ size but at 53cm!!!
A few more drifts across a bank of colour produced nothing and once again I was thinking I was going home without a fish!!! On the last drift I put us over the top of a 3m lump which gave us nothing so we started tossing the bait and giving the boat a general clean-up before heading home. The Bro hooked a small BB and I was preparing it for release when my Staal gave a scream with a reasonable fish. So while pulling it in I was giving the Bro a lesson in release weights. Release complete and colour showing I could not call what it was all through the fight. No head shakes and smallish runs! Well up popped a nice Pinky of 5.5kg and I was excited to say the least !!! As it was on Wed a WOOOOHOOOO lept from my mouth!! The first legal snapper I've caught on my boat(other people had) so in the esky it went and home we headed!!!!
A little more cleanly shaven but just as happy!!!!!!!!!!

Calm before the storm......Thursday 23rd
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2008-10-24 12:24With the weather gods being kind in the last three days i've mad the best of it. Had another nice day on the water yesterday with Pete D coming out. Pete's been crook but still found time to go fishing....i like his form!
We ended up with a few descent Dhufish (plenty small also), big bluespot flathead, pinks, KG's, BB etc
I've had a very good run lately and have caught and kept some nice dhufish so i decided to put this one back. Fish was caught on my driftbaiting baitcaster on a strip of sargy. Estimated weight 13kgs and had no barotrauma issues so back she went!
I initially did a simple release as she was full of life but after about 4 metres (the vis was awesome) she slowly came back up with only air in the stomach stopping the release. The 40oz release weight was used but struggled to get this fish down (cant weight for the 80oz) but the fish being healthy actually swam down and aided the "release weight" release!

Some more tailor & salmon
Submitted by JoeH on Fri, 2008-10-24 10:24G'Day,
The weather yesterday looked too good to resist, so a work colleague and myself headed back out to my "home away from home", or at least it feels that way for this week!
We both used the light gear the whole time, and came home with a nice couple of feeds.
There are definately a lot of smaller salmon around at the moment, so I'd expect you could get a few from the back of Penguin Island either mornings or evenings now.
My mate got a cool video on the first tailor, (60cm), but it's an MP4, and 60MB, and I have no idea how to convert/reduce file sizes.
Cheers,
Joe

BELATED WED. REPORT
Submitted by STAAL LOVER on Fri, 2008-10-24 01:13Went out from Rockingham with my nephew on Wed. We were headed to a ledge that I pinged on the way back last Fri to see what it was holding!! On arrival the ground looked great with a ton of ground colour at 56m then dropping straight off to 60+!!! Several drifts latter and nothing to show for it so off to a known spot we went !!!!
On the second drift Shaun hooked up and it didn't seem to be that big. He was winding it up slowly until about 15m off the bottom it realised it was hooked and started to give him a little more fight!!! When the fish hit the surface he was over the moon!!!!!
His first Bauldy
A medium BB and a couple of Sgt Bakers were all that we got over the next couple of hours! Then I got a hit and it ran like a train only to break loose from the hook!!!!!! As I was pulling up I was still getting a kick or two. It was a Red Snapper of about 40cm. Spewing at the loss of the bigger fish Shaun was telling me it wouldn't bite again!!!! But 2 drifts latter in the same spot and bang it was on again!!!! It certainly had me huffing and puffing before it hit the surface about 30m away from the boat(geez they look twice as big further out). WOOOOOHOOOOO I was screaming the whole time I was dragging it toward the boat(and for the rest of the day)!!!!
BOAT RECORD AND PB 13.9kg !!!! (widened the gap seeing as Till got so close last week)!!!!!!!
Heading home every now and then a WOOOOHOOOO would just burst out of my mouth!!!!!!!

EXMOUTH report - 23/10
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2008-10-23 21:30Well well well, with a forecast of 4-6 knots from the south good ol buoyweather had predicted it pretty spot on and as we rounded the cape a whisper of a breeze greeted us as we looked over the Ningaloo Reef. Arriving at Tantabiddi at 7 we were the third boat in the water and with the tide soon to change , things were looking and feeling fishy. A quick 10 minute troll from the end markers to the 40m line saw no action on the mackie front and the plan to change up to billfish gear was made. After 5 minutes of trolling I turned around to make sure the spread was looking good with some action on the lures in slight slop. By the time my head had turned 180 degrees out of left field a solid marlin smashed the surface, and caused a near on metre high foamball that had me on my feet in mere seconds ready for action!
Waiting for the drag to start peeling I realised that he had unfortunately missed the hooks and I sat back down dejected but amped as things were looking promising! Talk about a buzz thou even without hooking the fish!! As it happens and no real suprise the next 2.5 hours passed slowly without a sniff from any species with many miles covered from the 50m to 110m line through small bird schools and hundreds of junior flying fish.
With the westerly looking like it was about to intensify I moved into the shallow country where I normally get my trout and one drift told me that it was going to be too difficult for my deckie who has been fishing only numerous times in his life. After setting the pick over some flat but interesting country it was time to drift down the baits and wait for the action to begin. Strangely enough the first mulie that hit the water didn't even get to bounce off the bottom with both sides of the boat having rods bouncing off the gunnels and 'good fish' being called quite loudly. Seeing the glimmer of red I thought I had the mother of all trout until a solid chinaman fish surfaced, there was slight disappointment, but the vibe was still good that there was some active life on the bottom. Sam got taught a serious lesson by his fish and his attitude that this Ningaloo fishing was going to be easy was soon eroded as his fish took a 10m dive into the coral and stiched him up.
A quick re-tie and re-bait saw us near the bottom again only to have spangled after spangled plauge us until the esky was full. Anyone thats caught relatively shallow water spanglies know that these fish don't give up all the way to the surface and certainly pull some string - along with some of the best demersal fish you encounter up north. I'm not normally one to keep a box full of fish unless people are staying with me or need some help and with Sam's oldies requesting some fish, the order was filled and he was back in their good books. We ended up back at the ramp at 12pm and were stoked with our day on the water, if only that first billie had hooked up it would have well and truly been up there in the highly memorable stakes, will be anyway, but so close!! Forgive my lame attempts at story telling, had a few beers after getting back and then been on a bait gathering bender down at Learmonth for big blue marlin season (no where near as successful as the mornings fishing trip though :( )
Here's a few pics.
Cheers,
Adam
Ps. Cheers to Ando (Brad Anderson for the free camo's) will be in touch soon mate!

DAY OUT FRIDAY
Submitted by STAAL LOVER on Mon, 2008-10-20 00:45Finished work at midnight Thurs night and had the boat ready to go in the carpark(doesn't that upset my work mates). Got down to Point Peron about 12.45 and put a couple of home made bourbons under my belt and it was nigh nighs for 4 hrs!!! Got up about 5 and put the gear in the boat and was greeted by AL (DA BLOKE) at 5.30. Put theboat in and got things ready and Till(Jamie) turns up right on time.
Was a little choppy and there for a little wet on the way out Jamie not having his wet weather pants on looked like he had been for a swim by the time we got to the first spot!!!!
The first drift or two didn't produce anything but on the third I nailed a nice BB(no photo taken). So off to further spots we went !!!
The second spot I had not fished before and it only produced a couple of those nasty red spinny fellas. The wind had dropped and I decided it would be good to get out to a spot I had pinged in 60+m.
On arrival the lump looked good(couldn't really tell what it looked like the first time, we were drifting at about 5kns and it was covered in fish). Not as many fish this time but definately worth a shot. On the way out I was saying to Al "I wonder if you get KG's out in this depth". He pulled up two very nice specimens so I guess that answered that question
(once again no photos taken)(sorry Pilbarra Brad).
The wind had dropped to bugger all and the boat was twisting this way and that so it was hard to set a drift. But once I got us over the spot Jamie was on big time!!! A tussle began and a few minutes latter a lovely Dhuie hit the deck!!!! (YIPPPEEE A PHOTO)
It was Jamies PB Dhuie at 11kg(wrong calculations on the boat had me thinking that the nephew and I had lost the boat record @11.3kg. but it wasn't to be). on the next drift I caught what I believe to be the nicest looking fish in the sea(even better looking in it's natural environment when diving). The Western Blue Devil!!!!!!
Another drift and Jamie was on again. Not as big this time but still a nice specimen of 9kg!!!
Don't think Al was tooo happy!!!!!
(I'm sure he didn't have a problem at all)
Well it was getting on and we did a couple of drifts at some spots on the way home to no avail.
All in all a great day on the water(always is when you can get on the water) and well done Jamie!!

Cuttlefish feed
Submitted by feral1975 on Sun, 2008-10-19 21:08With the daily runs to the hospital taking up most of the day now I slipped out to Garden Island this afternoon for a quick squid hunt . The run across didn't take long as it glassed off in the sound, around fivish the first cuttly came on board and in a short time had just under the bag limit not big specimen's but great eating . A quick clean and salt and pepper and they shallow fried up perfectly , did notice in the sound some people still suspiciously looking like they were on snapper in the cloced season but have to keep an eye on it in the next few days , if anyones got an arvo apare send us a pm and we'll go get a few squid , leave woodies at around fourish and back in at dark . By the way the new ramps are finished but awaiting dpi approval to open them up , oh and yes once again they forgot to install lights on them

Day with the Staal
Submitted by Andy Mac on Sun, 2008-10-12 10:38Friday looked promising and so with Lockie unable to make it, Staal and I decided to get a quick practice session in for the "date with the Dropzone" trip in support of fishwrecked.
The forecast was for 10-13knot winds most of the day but when we got out there it was much lighter and only really came in around 2-00pm.
First spot was to try and get a pinky for Staal. Knowing the "first fish captured by a new deckie has to be released to satisfy the fishing gods" rule , he was unphased and said he would release anything. (When you have a fellow skipper as a deckie they tend to accept that rule a lot more easily than non skippers) First drop and I was casually talking about what species we had caught on this warm up spot, a few big Queenies here as well as plenty of Pinkies. Wham, my bait gets nailed and a struggle ensues. After a reasonable fight a pretty big Queenie comes over the side.
Another drift and I get a small pinky, which was released and Staal (Rod) thankfully jags a small fish so the fish gods were appeased with a quick release. OK, with that out of the way it was time to hit the Dropzone to see if any fish were awake. Unfortunately with the sounder lit up with lots of individual fish arches they just weren't interested at all. After a few drifts we headed a little wider and spread the load over several spots.
With all my trips out I try and find a new spot or fish spots that I haven't fished for years. These are generally numbered spots that I have no idea what was caught on them before. One such spot was given a try and as is usual I like to name them after new Deckies that are with me at the time if they nail a good fish. Well Rod didn't let me down and expertly skull dragged this fine specimen to the suface with the Staal combo not giving an inch. Actually the truth is that this fish actually took a bit of line momentarily against the drag which was still set for the Dropzone.
We continued on to catch a few more fish and between us we had the V4 covered (Dhuie,Pinky,Baldie,BB) The reds weren't in 40m. I even picked up two nice big KG's as bycatch as well as Staal nailing a nice Pinky (sorry no pic), which was his target species of the day. The release weight got a work out on Pinkies, Dhuies and Blackarse, including a double header off good size Blackarse that Staal caught.
All in all we had a great day on the water, the fish weren't huge but we had a good spread and plenty for a feed. Rod was great company on the boat and I would rate him very highly on the preferred deckie rankings, being a skipper himself, he understands what needs to be done and gets on and does it. It certainly helps that he is a top bloke too.
As a final post script, on one spot I managed a double header of BB on the one supersnell, one good fish and a little baby. We rigged up the release weight and dealt with the baby first and got him down pretty quick only to see that the other fish had a tag sticking in him. A check with Tim on the off chance it was one of ours and you wouldn't believe it, its my second recaptured fish in 2 weeks, this time it was one of Tim's. The tag sheet had the following comments "large swim bladder / stomach in mouth", we had used the release weight in over 40m of water and this fish (which suffers barotrauma just as much as dhuies do) was recaptured 11 months later and had grown quite a bit. (edited by me, just checked Tim's records and it was caught within 200m of the original capture) If you had any doubts about the effectiveness of a quick and careful release with a release weight, let me tell you that Release weights do work!
I'm looking forward to the Dropzone trip with Staal and Lockie, should be great fun. I'll have my new colour sounder by then woo hoo!
Thanks for sharing a great day on the water Rod.
Cheers
Andy Mac

Hillarys New Boardwalk
Submitted by tango and cash on Wed, 2008-10-08 12:50Went down to the new Boardwalk at Hillarys two nights ago for a fish with my new gear. It was teaming with good sized Mullet that went crazy for the Burley I had made up (thanks for all the advice guys). After about an hour I started getting some Bream and Yellowtail. All good fun on light gear.
There were also some real big Whiting cruising the shallows in and out of the light but my limited skills meant they cruised past my bait laughing to each other
. Oh well, I'm learning.
For those that have not been there it's really well lit and seems to be a fish magnet. I heard your not supposed to fish on the actual Boardwalk but I didn't see any signs
