Soapy
Submitted by petervb on Sun, 2013-08-18 20:29Had a crack at the drain today, mucked around trying for whiting but none around so i chucked a mulie out on a gang, 2nd cast and bang, hook up.... Didnt run much immediately but gave a good run about 20m off the beach then gave up. I had it called for a tailor and was pleasently suprised when this little fella came ashore. Certainly was fun on my little whiting rod with 20lb.
a quick photo then was released successfully to fight another day.

Quick Trip to Coral Bay
Submitted by Cruise Control on Sun, 2013-08-11 15:31Arrived back on friday from a flying visit to Coral Bay.
Travelled up the previous Saturday doing the trip in 11.5 hours, with light traffic and good driving conditions. Had more than a couple of beers with the lads and ended up not that flash for the first day out. Weather whilst there was great, warm, sunny and little wind.
Any fishing in close resulted in getting monstered by a horde of sharks with very few fish making it to the boat. So we ended up fishing wide, 20+nm out in anything from 100 to 270m. Plenty of sharks out wide as well by mostly smaller models being the most annoying, tangling lines and biting off tackle but amongst these were some bigger units up t 7 foot or so. We brought several of these to the boat which was bloody hard work from the deep water.
When we could get away from the sharks we managed to boat good Reds up to 11kgs and plenty of good Goldband up to 6 kgs or so. Also picked up Saddleback Sea Perch, Robbos, Rankins, Pinkies, Tomato Cod and plenty of smallish cobia 8kgs or so. We looked for Rubies but not sure that the sounder had enough grunt to give us enough detail so we gave that away and concentrated in the 160 to 100m depths which seemed to be the most productive with consistent Reds and Goldband until the sharks moved in, then it was time to move.
Gave the electric reels a go in the 150's so as to get used to them for fishing the deep down here. Man do they save some work when pulling up to rebait etc and mostly made light work of whatever we caught out there including the bigger Reds and Goldband. They also did not have that much trouble with 6 foot sharks although I could smell the drag starting to smoke up on them. But when you are pulling up from 150m every 10 minutes or so they were a godsend.
Only took a couple of pics and they are not very good ones at that. Weather was closing in for the weekend so got out at the right time, leaving at 6.30am to drive through fog for the first 40kms for another easy trip home arriving ay 6.00pm
cheers

Submitted by Hook_er on Sat, 2013-08-10 18:10Went out for a little bash in the sound last night and had absolutely no luck! Fish seemed to be under the boat just didn't want to bite.
To add insult to injury when we returned at 2:30am (tired & wet) my boat trailer was stolen (cu*#s!!)
They also smashed our cruisers window, stole the ash tray and left a huge mess. Hopefully these guy get what they deserve.

Its been awhile.
Submitted by Te Kaha on Wed, 2013-08-07 12:00Gday everyone it has been awhile since I posted but I guess I had nothing to post about :D and now I do...
The first trip was a very well planned diving trip to Rotto. Last year my girlfriends mum passed away from Breast Cancer and it was very tough on her and her brother. anyway we were throwing a bit of a do for her and the local pub for her one year memory and I figured that everyone loves fresh crayfish so I rounded up a good crew and we were off. Plain and simple it was a perfectly flat day, the vis was the best iv seen it, we found the spot and caught crayfish !! Once we had enough lobster I told the skipper to take me a certain spot where I had seen a Dhuey lurking earlier and I jumped in with the spear and on my first dive there he was, my first Dhuey, plenty of crays and home by 11am.
After this successful day out our Captain Marcy who just so happens to be my girlfriends brother headed off up North to work therefor we were land based for a few months but now hes back wev been into it ! After a few quick trips and nothing major to report, I was in his ear about tales of Jigs, Placcies, big dhues, pink snapper, Jurien Bay, two rocks and other fabulous ideas that I come up with after lurking the fishwrecked forums. So off we went to the fishing store $1500 later we were set to explore the grounds beyond the sound.
Our first trip proved to be completely useless as we headed out to the South Western corner of Rotto in search of good ground. 20s,30s,40s,50s nothing, no bites, no strikes, lost jigs (snags I think) and our expectations far from exceeded. I convinced myself and the captain it was matter of time and patience before we succeed and before we knew it we were back at the ramp with our tail between our legs. Never the less its was an amazing day on the water last Saturday and good to try something different cant wait to catch something on a jig or placcy and show the boys there are other ways than just a piece of bait.
If anyone out there is also new to the jigging and placcy scene and can shed some light on anything we may be doing wrong that would be awesome.
Cheers T.K

Wedge Island 3/8
Submitted by lunker on Wed, 2013-08-07 09:22Hey guys, just a quick report on an overnight last weekend. The conditions were unreal - 23, sunny and little breeze. Not bad for the middle of winter, right?
Camped (fished...) overnight several kays up the beach, and found a beautiful gutter adjacent to some reef. Managed a bunch of whiting, dart and herring (one was huge), a decent flattie and a skippy of around 30cm. Pulled in two reasonable tailor just after dusk, and missed several more, before they shut down quickly. Had a whole herring out which got a massive run around 9pm and just came back with the tail... I was sure to convince the guys it was a massive mulloway ;-) Also just before lights out pulled in a nice little wobbegong around 1m.
The weeds situation on saturday was good.. some spots were a bit weedy but plenty of clear areas. Sunday has weeded up considerably - I'm not sure if it was just the high tide dragging it off the beach or not.
Cheers

Last Friday
Submitted by Stevo81 on Mon, 2013-08-05 17:22Couldn't go to work last Friday with the weather looking so "sexual" so ended up convoying out wide off two rocks with a few mates on 2 boats. Hit up some spots 35-45m off ledge point and spent the first few drifts watching the boys on the other boat hooking up straight away- my mate Leroy nailing his PB dhu of 14.2kg second drop. The wether was perfect all day and we ended up landing pinkys, a baldy, blackarse, and heaps of dhuies-(Ended up putting back 8) and was circled by a whale its calf for 3 separate drifts. The other boys bagged out on demersal aswell as releasing a huge sambo so we all had a sic day!

Sat - First trip out on the new boat
Submitted by JasFishing on Mon, 2013-08-05 12:38So with the wife’s blessing (after I failed to get out Friday.....) a few mates and I headed out from Point Peron to 5 photon bank hoping to land a decent fish on my new boat. We headed out around 2pm and on the first drop started catching big Skippy like they were blow fish, after catching and releasing about 50 of them we decided to move spots.
After a slow start at the next spot we started to get a few bites as the tide changed. My mate jimmy pulled up a nice 50cm KG.
I then started to get smashed, pulled up a under size Dhu a large cuttle fish and a port Jackson shark (1.5mtrs) on the same pull and heap of wrasse
The next drop I finally pulled a nice 70cm Dhu so the boat landed its first decent fish (The fishing gods where finally being nice to me)...all in all a fantastic first trip out in the new tub
looking forward to the next bit of nice weather....:)

First outing whiting bonanza
Submitted by buddharock on Sun, 2013-08-04 19:58We had been waiting for the right weather to take our first boat out on a proper trip and Saturday looked the goods. A later than desired start due to swimming lessons for the kids and a slight hangover for the skipper who definitely wasn't the skipper the night before. All the safety gear was purchased the week before and we loaded up with a variety of bait, snacks, painkillers (for the head) and beverages (for the head). We headed out from Hillarys to our family whiting spot, conditions were beautiful and the boys and wife were happy to arrive at the destination. After only a couple of minutes we hooked up to our first fish and continued from there. A smallish shark (less than a metre) followed up one of the whiting and apart from a couple of wrasse, flathead (undersized) and a scaley mackerel we ended up with 22 whiting, some nice fat ones amongst the bag. The eldest boy was very relaxed and pulled in his first solo fish, followed by four more and the youngest boy was assisted to pull in a couple of his own. All in all a very successful trip out and back. Am loving the new boat and looking forward to getting out as often as possible to find ground and get some decent fish on board.
Thanks to all the members that offered advice and tips in the lead up to this. Will continue to provide updates and reports as often as possible.

Tough Day on the Water
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2013-08-03 18:48Had planned on hitting the deep drop today but weather did not play the game, seabreeze underestimating the wind strength in the morning by some margin. Was pretty nice after lunch, so just punted about in the 40-80's..
Did a lot of km, dropped a lot of jigs and got stuff all. One of the toughest demersal jig days for a long time.
Stopped for a sambo jig on the way home to make us feel better.........went pretty hard on PE3.
Nice to meet you today Dougie.

GOLDEN PONDS
Submitted by Belly88 on Thu, 2013-08-01 17:00Just thought id throw a few pics up from our day at Golden Ponds today. Had a great day today as i did this time last year. Heaps of trout in a few of the ponds probobly caught 30 to 40 between 3 of us, all catch and release.
This year unlike last year they were fairly picky on what lures they would take. The winners lure wise for the day were a little red Ecogear SX40 and very small spinners.
They were reasonable size about 30 to 40cm and a good laugh on an average day.
Tried for other stuff Koi, perch, bream etc but no luck once again. No idea how people catch them weve tried everything now.
Anyways heres a few pics, the last one is just a stupid one but again just a laugh because they were so hard to hold to photograph without doing them to much harm.. Only took a few early on then we lost interest in takeing pictures but we got some a little bit bigger later in the day.
Well worth the 10 bucks in my opinion.
Cheers Belly

The Busso Jetty Report 31-7-13
Submitted by TheJettyRat on Wed, 2013-07-31 19:23
Not much to report this time around. Fishing on the jetty is usually very quiet at this time of year and this year is no exception. There are very little bread and butters around at the moment if you are chasing a feed of herring you will have to work for it. Although not in massive numbers squid is your best bet right now with most being caught on the second half of the jetty. A few Mulloway are hanging around but are fairly quiet if you are chasing them you may have to be willing to burn the candle at both ends. Not many live baits around so bring strip bait for the Mulloway.
That is all for now I will report back around October when things start to pick up.

Garden Island Sambo
Submitted by Fisheagle on Sat, 2013-07-27 18:21After spending the whole day in the garden on the Saturday I convinced Gail that we should take the boat out the next day and see if we can pick up a couple of fish. After consulting the weather web site (Willy Weather) it was clear that there was going to be a stiff Easterly in the morning, calming as the day progressed. The plan was therefore to do a couple of drifts over Five Fathom Bank and then shelter on the western bank of Garden Island.
We arrived at Woodman Point just before sunset and within a couple of minutes had the boat on the water. We first witnessed a couple of youngsters launch their boat without the drainage plugs inserted, only to realise their mistake when the bilge pump started pumping water out of the boat. By this time the driver of the vehicle and trailer was already parking and a desperate sprint to the car park by his mate had him back in minutes to retrieve the boat. Fortunately they managed to get the boat back on the trailer and drain the water before inserting the plugs. I did not have much comment as I have done this same thing at this same ramp in the past.
The trip across Cockburn Sound was swift as the water was relatively flat (Easterly wind) and we were soon drifting baits over Five Fathom Bank near Seaward Reef. We managed to catch a couple of the ever present Wrasse and after three lumpy drifts decided to head to a sheltered point near Garden Island. After anchoring in a depth of 15m - approximately 1.5km west of the northern point of the island and set up a burley trail. The decision was not to burley too heavily as this normally brings the Wrasse and Rays to the area. The bait consisted of a mullie that had the head cut off with a 5/0 Gamakatsu hook through the body portion and a half hitch around the tail. This ensured that the “juices” of the fish were being released as soon as the bait hit the water. The hook was tied to the end of a 30lb fluorocarbon leader which in turn was tied to the main 20lb braid line – no weight (sinker) was placed on the line. There was a decent current flowing from east to west which meant that the baits did not lie on the bottom but drifted somewhere in mid-water.
I had two early runs but missed both strikes. The next run resulted in a Pinkie of 32cm followed by a decent sized Wrasse and then a Port Jackson Shark. My next fish was a 53cm Pinkie – my largest from the boat to date. Gail managed a further two smallish Pinkies before setting the hook into something substantial. The Shimano Nexave 15-30lb rod with the Ambassadeur 6000C4 reel loaded with 20lb braid is an ideal combination for targeting fish in the light to medium class. After a fight which lasted about 15 minutes Gail landed a Sambo of about 4kg - her first from the boat. During her tussle with the Sambo my other reel took off but I managed to drop this fish as well.
Within 5 minutes of rebaiting the Nexave another run resulted in a solid hook-up and this time it was my turn to do battle with the fish. After another good fight I managed to land a Sambo in the 5kg class. After this fish the wind died down and so did the fishing which sent us back to the ramp after another great day on these WA waters. Keep River Report With Pictures
Submitted by outdoinit on Wed, 2013-07-24 21:28Have many People been out to the Keep River for a Look/Fish???
Well we have just got back into Kununurra after 6 days out there, nice spot for Barra Fishing and Bloody HUGE Crocs..
Never seen so many Barra active in the water.
Anyhow below is a couple of Pics of our time out there..
Hooked this little bugger (Approx 6 to 7 footer) after it snapped at my lure I was casting. Bastard got my best Barra Lure...
Barra, Barra, Really enjoy catching a Barra no matter what the size.
Nice Little Fresh Water hole and not a bad camp spot. We camped a lot further up toward the mouth of the Keep but did enjoy this spot on one of our look around drives.
A couple Barra that we kept for a good feed with oven baked Chips.. Yummo
Just a couple hundred Pelicans following the Tide in and feasting on the thousands of Poddy Mullet.
We were camped about 40kms from the River mouth.
I would definitely recommend a trip to the Keep River for a Look/Fish and if anyone is thinking of going for a gander one day give me a bell as I got GPS spots for good camp spots etc..

When it rains it pours.
Submitted by Skippydogg on Wed, 2013-07-24 04:23Hey,
Thought id share a good news story of mine after recent fishing sessions.
My father in law is over from Europe, and as the family are avid outdoors people and have a deep connection with the land (hunting and eating game (sustainably and legally), gathering and preserving berries /mushrooms etc) and I was keen to impress him with the outdoor lifestyle in Western Australia, starting with simple metro fishing. Being a hunter, he didnt need reminding that the only thing that is taken from most fishing sessions is experience and a marriage strenthening smell of bait and trail of beach sand through the house, but I gave myself an out and reminded him anyway.
So i took him out to a northern metro beach last week to chase some tailor and whatever else. He didnt seem too optimistic with the whole casting from the beach into shallow (IN HIS EYES) water. He kept asking if there were actually any fish this close to the shore. But after nearly 2 hours we hooked into a smallish (300mm) flathead - this one went back in - and a dinner plate sized tailor (430mm). Happy days.
In the conversations over the next week I kept going on about the mysterious and elusive Mulloway that i had been trying to teach myself to fish for since i was a boy. I had caught a few juveniles up north but never in or near the metro area. Ever. After literally hundreds of hours of fishing, and who knows how may hours reading, rereading, talking with people fishing and basically anyone that wanted to talk mulloway... all nighters, high tide, low tide, live bait, lures, trying all sorts of rigs and hooks, solunar table schedules, daytime, nightime, beach, groynes and boats - nothing.
I constantly keep and eye on conditions and tides etc (as best i can whislt working up north) and saw a tide change just after dark with a positve solunar outlook and some pretty rough weather (yes - this was based on part of what i read over the years with absolutely no serious first hand success to support it) and decided to take him out to have a tilt at metro mulloway.
The plan was simple. Go to my local beach haunt - try to catch tailor - use as bait - catch mulloway. I had never seen or heard of anyone pulling mulla from this specific place, but ive fished this spot heaps and caught tailor, flathead and whiting / herring. After everything ive read and heard i always thought it should fire for mullla if the conditions were right.
By the time we got to the beach it was dark and pissing down with rain. We arrived right on low tide. There was a pretty shallow churned up white water gutter covered with foam about 30m from shore. A strong northerly was blowing the whole place sideways. We had set up on 30lb main, with a dropper loop paternoster rigged with 3 ganged 4/0 hooks on 60lb leader with a 6 star sinker. No swivels. Both mulies presented head down. So much for the tailor plan.
Again, he didnt look too optimistic but the years of failure have left me obsessed and there was no way a little (or a lot) of rain was going to stop me fishing two hours of low tide that night.
So I set us up and cast out for both of us. Our sinkers struggled to find bottom in the washing machine but within ten minutes my F.I.L started gesturing at me and his rod was bent over. Probably the wave action or weed i thought but as took the rod in hand i felt the unmistakable head shake followed by a run that i had heard about over the years.
After a brief and uneventful fight my first metro mulla was landed, and no sooner than i measured it the second rod (handed to my F.I.L) fired with the same unmistakable shake and run. After fishing all gear / no idea for mulla for 20 years without success, we hooked 2 in a matter of minutes on mulies... WTF!!!
They werent massive, but definitely PB for us, and both in the metro and it makes all of the effort and energy so worth it. My F.I.L also now thinks that mulla are easy to catch.
We left immediately after the second one was in the bag as we were grateful for the drink taken from the karma cup.
45 minutes from time of arrival to the time we packed up drove away, and all smack bang in the middle of Perth in the pouring rain.
Dont mean to sound glib but i am just stoked.

Video Amberjack jig hookup, fight and........premature release!
Submitted by JohnF on Tue, 2013-07-23 08:32Went for a quick jig with the boys on Sunday to our shallow sambo and amberjack spot. Quick sound over, yhep, plenty there, and first drop second crank we were one and landed around 30 in the next 3 hours before heading home early to catch the footy.
Most of the fish were rats in the 5-10 kg mark, fun on light gear. This video is the only evidence of the largest fish of the day by far, a likely solid amberjack but we will never know........you see, several weeks ago, me and Daz "released" a just size dhuie that Deckie Tim has caught and had turned away to get the iki jimi tool......we thought it was pretty funny at the time, but karma, as they say, is a bitch!
Several weeks later and Deckie Tim has his opportunity for revenge as he helps me lift the fish in as I turn away........watch the video.......he even looks surprised and almost sorry.......
