Pinnacle Marine Rods- Any experience with them and combo buy if anyones interest or alternative suggestions plz
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Sat, 2014-10-11 11:56Ive just installed some outriggers and due to the layout restrictions on my boat, Ive be given some good advice that Ill need to run short bent butt stand up rods to get the best results, so Ill be offloading the couple of straight butts I have and started looking around for some cheapish options as Im not really keen on spending $500/ $2K a go.
Have been keeping an eye out on here/ gumtree/ ebay etc for some 2nd hand 24 +37kg models (after two of each)but their obviously rare as hell. On my ebay travels I came across these:
Now Im usually a sceptic for anything cheap on crapbay (you get what you pay for), but Ive done a bit of googlework on them and the reviews seem surprisingly good:
http://www.thehulltruth.com/sportfishing-charters-forum/212317-pinnacle-marine-rods.html
http://www.swordfishingcentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7620
Has only seen one of these rods in the flesh or know anyone who has one?
Im realistic that theyre not going to be in Tiagra rod class, but at that price (cant find anything anywhere for under 350 a rod except those sagimi jobs that seem more like deep drop rods) and with the decent reviews Im thinking they might be worth a crack. Pacific Bay rigging and ALPs guides are both decent enough quality I think.
Apparently the builder (John) does decent discounts for multiple purchases and Im toying with the idea of getting 4, and if anyone else is keen to buy one as well and it could make them cheaper still and split postage accordingly etc. Give me a PM if anyone is interested in looking into it any further...
Alternatively, can anyone recommend a cheapish alternative in short butt 24 +37kg trolling rods? Shame Shimanos discontinued their bent butt backbone models
Also, stay tuned for a couple of decent straight butt 37Kg rods going up for sale soon to release some funds

Albany summer
Submitted by lachieH on Fri, 2014-10-10 20:57 Hi everyone. In the summer my family are going to stay down in Albany, and I want to know what you will catch there? I am really keen and pushing the point to go to Kalbarri instead because of the tailor and they recon its "nicer" in Albany, but I don't agree
. Anyway is there any chance of a tailor or salmon school in the middle of summer? Keen to give my rods a workout. If anything else is around there big like that in the waves, please let me know.
There is rivers in both locations that hold bream, so Im not worrying as much about smaller river species or jetty fish but more about the bigger stuff.

Whiting showing on sounder
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2014-10-09 17:19Is it possible to get whiting to show up on a sounder or are they too close to the bottom to define. If some one has a screen capture showing confirmed whiting it would be very much appreciated if they could post it, I'm still learning to read what I'm being shown on the screen.

Submitted by lime mulie on Thu, 2014-10-09 09:18Hi everyone
I'm going to be in perth(freo) this weekend, and if anyone wants to bring along a deckie I'd be more than keen and willing to split fuel, bait costs etc. Have some experience on boats if that matters. You can give me a ring at 0406055152 for a chat if you're interested.

Real seat sticker
Submitted by new age on Thu, 2014-10-09 06:26I own a reel that came with a reel seat sticker to protect the reel from corrosion and scratching when you mount it to a rod. The only problem is the sticker is getting worn out and fits poorly. Are there reel seat stickers you can buy or something around the house that does the job better than the one that came with the reel?
cheers

chinaman rock cod size/eating
Submitted by Niko on Wed, 2014-10-08 21:25hey all, recently up in exmouth for a week with the gf's family (report still to go up) semi successful trip but still fun.
caught a few baby cod from the reefs around the shoreline (like 12cms) and put them all back as u would then on the last arvo there brother in law got one about 25-28cms. im not familiar with cod species but knew 300-400cm min. so i just said its under and had to go back. closer reading of the recretional fishing guide and a few pics and the fishwrecked id guide and i found it was actually a chinaman rock cod (charlie court) no limit and according to the site dont get much bigger and very good eating quality.
so just curious what size would people keep them at and are they worth it? it was kinda fat but mostly just a big mouth.
cheers, Niko

Swan river tailor
Submitted by lachieH on Wed, 2014-10-08 16:29was watching an episode of fishing WA and saw a part when they fished a large cliff-like hill next to meet Henry bridge. They pulled out tailor up to 40cm on their light lines. So I was thinking if I got in my kayak and casted some 10g twisty's towards the shore at this time of the year already, would that work? Or should I wait until the middle of summer? I have heard it's the best tailor spot in the river and I live close to it so it wouldn't be much of a struggle getting down there whenever I wanted to fish.

Cervantes
Submitted by buddharock on Wed, 2014-10-08 06:48Heading to Cervantes tomorrow afternoon with a couple of mates. Friday is looking ok, not great with seabreeze showing SW up to 16 knots and swell increasing to 1.7 m. Saturday swell over 2m so probably not going to get out in that, considering the size of my boat. Are there some spots in close that could be fished in that swell/conditions? Wondering if it is worth coming back home instead? I've never fished from there and would appreciate advice. Thanks

Harlequin fish
Submitted by Gav475 on Tue, 2014-10-07 16:15caught a harlequin today. Checked the regs to ensure it was legal but found it to be quite ambiguous. It is listed with cods and there is only a minimum size listed for estuary cod @ 400 and breaksea @ 300. I am assuming, dangerous I know, that there is no legal size for them It measured 450 so was a good size but I hate not being sure so it went back.. Can someone clarify for me. Cheers

What Saragosa reel size to go on Shimano Deep Jig 200?
Submitted by Grooveepants on Tue, 2014-10-07 09:29Hi, Just wondering what your thoughts are on which Shimana Saragos SW reel size to use on a Shimano Deep Jig 200 rod.
I'll be spooling it with PE4 - 5 braid and it's going to be the general purpose rod for bottom bouncing, occasional jigging at the barges, live baiting, trolling, etc
I've got a 6000SW and 10000SW as examples as the 5000 and 6000 are the same size reel and the 8000 and 10000 are the same size (the only difference been the line capacity on the spools).
I'm leaning towards the 6000SW

Burley
Submitted by lachieH on Mon, 2014-10-06 18:59been watching fishing wa old episodes and saw Steve making his own burley.he used pollard, oil, water and on the day mixed maggots with it. So I went to the shop today and bought 1 litre of tuna oil, a bucket, 2kg of pollard, obviously have water here at home and can't find any frozen maggots, does anybody know where I can get maggots from?
anyway the main question is should I add anything else to the mix? Haven't made any yet so am pen to suggestions. I have seen some peo use cat biscuits which I can get from city farmers so I might get some tomorrow.
it will be burley for herring, gardies etc. beach species but not snapper and the big stuff
