Free chart app for iPhone
Submitted by till on Mon, 2011-03-14 08:11Memory-Map iPhone app was brought to my attention this morning.
Looks interesting, does a little bit more than the Navionics Marine Australia in that if you BUY their iPhone app, and the PC version, you can sync points between them.
I have discussed this very feature with Navionics and they say that one day, it will become available between their iPhone/Android app, and the Navionics PC app (v1.3, 25e), but then they said that pinch zoom will come out for Android and I haven't seen that either.

Predicted low billfish numbers for aibt and gamex
Submitted by Dirt on Sun, 2011-03-13 16:51Its a real shame for exmouth holding the AIBT this year and the predicted billfish numbers being low in comparison to previous years due to the extreme rise in water temp and issues with clarity for this time of year.look forward to hearing some feedback from the first few days of the AIBT
P.S hopefully billfish numbers arent to low and all entrants still get into a few fish

Incredible fish swarms may be linked to tsunami
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2011-03-13 16:27
The shores of Acapulco's beaches were this weekend teeming with masses of fish packed so tightly they looked like an oil slick from above.
Thousands of sardines, anchovies, striped bass and mackerel surged along the coast of the Mexican resort in an event believed to be linked to the devastating Japanese tsunami.
Delighted fishermen rushed out in wooden motor boats, abandoning their rods and nets and simply scooping the fish up with buckets.
A man photographs a shoal of sardines off the shore of Acapulco
Fishermen flocked to the water to take advantage of the surge
Some experts believe the phenomenon is directly related to the Japanese tsunami
'There were about 20 or 30 fishermen and there were people who came with their kids to take advantage of it,' Carlos Morales said.
The fishermen attributed the strange phenomenon to the unusual currents unleashed by tsunami that followed the earthquake in Japan.
'It would fall into that category where you would love to make the connection, but who knows?' said Rich Briggs, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
'Tsunamis can change local currents, but it's hard to make a firm connection.'
Fishermen in Acapulco say they have never see such large schools of fish so close to the coast
The fish were so tightly packed they looked like an oil slick from above
Some bathers steered clear of the mysterious event and kept out of the water

Kalbarri Rivermouth Update
Submitted by Mick on Sun, 2011-03-13 11:54G'day guys
Just an update on the rivermouth, I mentioned earlier in the week that it was opened but that was only to commercial boats. The mouth is still closed to recreational boats and at this stage will be for at least another week. One of the channel markers from inside the mouth has been dragged out past Black Rock and there is a new break right in the middle of the channel. Dept of Trans is currently organising hydrographic surveys, etc to ensure safe passage of the rivermouth. So to those who are thinking of dragging your tub up this way it would be best to check with the dept before. Hope this helps
Cheers Mick

Lox rods
Submitted by Cameron71 on Sat, 2011-03-12 17:37I am looking for a surf rod that has a slender butt, is light, strong and is 12' or more. Has to be a spin to use with a stella 8000.
A fellow in Bluewater showed me a Lox rod that seemed to fit the bill, although might be a little on the light uside action wise. It was rated to a 100gm lure which pretty much leaves you a mulie and two ounces of sinker.
Has anyone used a Lox?
Is there anything better out there that might fit the bill? would spend $450 if I had to.

JOINT PROJECT EXAMINES CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS ON FISHERIES
Fisheries researchers will join forces with CSIRO scientists over the next three years, to closely examine climate change effects on Western Australia’s marine environment.
The $450,000 project, funded by the Australian Government’s Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), the Department of Fisheries WA and CSIRO, will utilise oceanographic modelling and an understanding of environmental effects on fisheries using some case studies.
Supervising Scientist Dr Nick Caputi, who is the department’s principal investigator on the project, said this was one of a number of FRDC-funded projects across Australia on ‘Climate Change Adaption – Marine Biodiversity and Fisheries’.
“In WA this project will be used to assess the vulnerability to climate change of fish stocks; such as western rock lobster, blue swimmer crabs, tailor and dhufish,” Dr Caputi said.
“The study will enable us to more closely monitor for any changes, so improved fisheries management strategies can be identified.
“Historic trends in environmental conditions will be examined, in addition to using oceanographic modeling to forecast trends over the next 20 and 50 years.”
Dr Caputi said the new work continued the research already undertaken on climate change through Western Australian Marine Science Institution projects.
Some key environmental trends affecting WA include:
- the increasing frequency and magnitude of ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) events;
- increasing variability of the Leeuwin Current superimposed on its weakening trend;
- an increase in water temperature and salinity;
- change in the frequency of storms affecting the lower west coast; and
- a change in the frequency of cyclones affecting the north-west.
“Long-term changes in the abundance of fish stocks may require an adjustment of effort or catch quota, for the stocks to be managed in a sustainable way.”

Length to weight conversion table: Marlin, sharks, rays etc.
Submitted by cuthbad on Thu, 2011-03-10 22:36Im pretty bad at estimating the weight of fish and since most fish I catch are either bait or released this table comes in pretty handy
http://www.sasaa.co.za/sasaaftp/allspeciescalculator1.xls
Just find the species, type in the length and it estimates the weight.
Thought it might be usefull for estimates with all the marlin being caught atm.
In my opinion it generally over estimates the weight by a small percentage. Keep in mind this is a South African table so species names differ in some cases.
Check it out and let us know how accurate you think it is, maybe some confirmed comparisons would be usefull.
Cheers,
Adam

Water temp 25.6 degrees
Submitted by wogboy1963 on Thu, 2011-03-10 18:05Hi guys,
Was out diving last week and the water temps were ranging from 25.1 to 25.8 degrees out of Hillarys. I talked to a fisheries officier working out from the Abrolous Islands and he said the water temps were in the 28-29 degress and that it was bleaching the coral. I found this a bit concerning and wondering what the hell is going on in our waters;
1. Crays are usally walked back in 1st week of march - not here!
2. The water temps last year same time were 19-21 degrees!
3. Salmon run has not even started down south yet - reports that they will run in April
4. Reports of Marlin being caught of Perth and further south.
5. Mackeral caught of Woodmans point!
Any thoughts on this.....is this climate change or global warning. Whats next a iceberg of Albany!

Barra fisherman fights off crocodile for 15 minutes
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-03-10 14:16

Fisherman Todd Bairstow, 28 years, arrives at Cairns Base Hospital late last night after surviving a 15-minute attack by a 4m crocodile in Weipa.
Todd Bairstow, 28, a Rio Tinto bauxite mine worker, was fishing on the banks of Trunding Creek near the Albatross Hotel when the huge crocodile lunged out of the water about 4pm yesterday.
The croc attack victim reportedly told Weipa Hospital staff he fought for his life with the 4m monster "for about 15 minutes" before locals heard his cries and ran to his aid to help drag him to safety.
He told medical staff how he desperately clung onto mangroves to prevent the big croc dragging him underwater for the deadly death roll.
He was taken to Cairns Base Hospital about 11.15pm where he is reportedly in a stable condition with the injuries described as non-life threatening.
Mr Bairstow, an avid fisherman, pig hunter and outdoorsman, told friends on Facebook how he was "living the dream'' in the wilderness of Cape York where big crocodiles are a familiar sight in creeks and waterways.
"Off to mow down some pigs after shift,'' he noted in his latest Facebook entry.
Another earlier entry he said he was off to a popular fishing spot known as Jurassic park to "slay some barra''.

Thousands of dead fish wash up on WA beaches
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-03-09 21:34Thousands of dead fish have been washing up on WA beaches
- From: PerthNow
- March 09, 2011 7:17PM
EXPERTS say that record temperatures and low oxygen levels are to blame for dead fish being washed up on riverbanks and beaches across WA.

Dead fish, eels and crayfish have been found on shores with the coastline of Green Head, some 290km north of Perth, being covered in washed up carcasses.
Green Head resident Rod Wilson said: "It's very heartbreaking. I've been here for 28 years and I've never seen anything like it. To us it's a local ecological disaster."
Reports state that in a clean up operation at Green Head, 20km north of Jurien Bay, more than 15000 dead fish were collected.
"Our biggest concern is how long is this going to take to right itself," Mr Wilson added.
Experts say WA's coastal waters have seen the highest rise in temperature in the world with up to 4C rise than normally seen this summer.
Dr Brian Jones from the Department of Fisheries said: "Anybody who as sat in Perth for the last few months without air conditioning knows what heat does.
"Fish are the same. They are cold blooded so they feel the heat."

gold coast/port douglas charter
Submitted by turts on Wed, 2011-03-09 18:50gday guys
family member has moved to the QLD recently. planning a visit sometime this year and as always keen to hit up the fishing on offer one of the days. will be visiting both port douglas and the gold coast.
due to time constraints would only be able to get on board single day charters, but keen to hit up most game species eg. kings, tuna, dolphinfish, cobia, trevally etc etc
does anyone know if this fishing is accessible by single day charter up that way?
had a look on google and other places and there seems to be quite a few charters. can imagine being a popular tourist destination there would be a fair few average ones so just after opinions/experiences of any good charters to point me in the right direction.
cheers
