How to keep live baits alive in a dinghy?
Submitted by woody on Thu, 2011-03-03 21:29Whats the best way to keep mullet, bony herring etc alive...Pilbara creek fishing in a 12 foot dinghy? I usually use a small battery powered aerator in a bucket but it doesnt work that well.....Ive seen buckets with holes in the top section, hung over the side, how does that go?
Have just picked up a proper bilge pump type aerator that sprays water onto the surface....havent tried it yet. What do you guys use?

Broome Absolute Ocean Charters
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Thu, 2011-03-03 06:50Hello all,
Heading to Broome tomorrow morning for the long weekend and last years birthday present, and I think we might be going on a charter with Mik and Kelly on Sunday morning.
Had a bit of a search and saw sp's can be successful at Broome, but as its my first trip was seeking some advice.
Have any of you who have been with them before out of Broome got any idea what depths you were fishing? Im not going to take any of my own gear on the plane, but was thinking of chucking in some mcarthy soft plastics and some jig heads in.
I have a pack of 6" pearl paddletails, 6" chartruese/pearl paddletails, 6" pink/pearl paddletails, some 5" gulp nuclear chicken shads.
I have 1oz, 2oz and 3oz jig heads. Will these be sufficient for the depths and am I on target with the soft plastics or do I need some bigger ones? I was also thinking about baby elf, lumo or pumpkinseed colors also.
Cheers,
Bryan

Dawai Pirate Jiggs , Evergreen Caprice jiggs, and Fanky Jiggs Help/ Discussion
Submitted by DhuBoi on Wed, 2011-03-02 23:55Hi Guys
Recently i have seen the success of these jiggs on our demersal fish species on the west coast. And was curious as to wether these jiggs are worth the price. I have never really had much success on jiggs at all , and iv tried octojigs , lucanas jiggs , and some asorted soft plastics which have gotton me black arse skippy and wrasse. What depth are suited to the jiggs such as pirate jigs evergreen and fanky jigs, and where is the best place to look and buy such jigs. Also what types of jigg techs are used to get the most attention from fish. My jigging style is usualy a fast flick / twitch up , and a slow flutter or lowering the rod back down. Also how far from the bottom is the jig best placed ? 1metre / 2metre. And also some recomended set ups in term of overhead setup / spinning setup and rod and line weight class. I know its heaps to take in and sorry for all the questions just i am very keen to land a nice sized demersal on a jigg and i want the challenge. Any help would be much appreciated cheers guys.
Im not sure if it helps but a couple of reels I have that im not using alot is a plueger contender and dawai regal 4000 .

interested in buying a diawa monster mesh for a tyrnos 10 2 speed i just bought the reel will be loaded with 30lb braid and 50 metres of mono top shot.
i was looking at the model DAIWA MONSTER MESH MAX MXC531-200 OVERHEAD JIG ROD pe 3-4 i was thinking about it and was wondering if the reel will be too small ?
i will use it for trolling up north and use of woodies, i will cast large baits and maybe when i get my dads boat out near rotto i will use for light jigging.
any oppinoins on if it will suit my purposes and any line options will be great !

Volvo V8 (260 AQ Motor) Electronic Ignition
Submitted by doublej on Wed, 2011-03-02 20:16Hi all
Quick question about about my Chevy V8 in a 24ft Ally Cruiser (Chevy V8 & Volvo 260AQ are the same).
Just fully re-built my motor and after 2 test runs is still running like shit.
My motor has had a complete re-build, carby has been re-conditioned, new wiring harness put in (Mechanic said it might have a voltage drop) and all new fuel. (Took 3 months for rebuild- mechanic said might run rough due to stale fuel)
Anyway long story cut short,
I have a Volvo 260AQ V8 motor that has just been re-built.
On the first run after the motor was installed we noticed it would idle ok (Not perfect) but would still idle.
If we gave the engine a rev (Idle 900) to about 1200-1300rpm it would just break down and die in the ass.
We stuffed around with the timing (180 deg) and all of the above to no joy.
After disscussion with the Carby man he suggested check the Advancing weights in the distributor(Who would have thought)
After inspection they were all siezed and obuisly were'nt advancing when need be (Fingers crossed this is the problem still haven't put new dissy in yet)
What I would like to know is that now I am replacing my dissy I am going to go electronic.
Firstly is there a problem with electronic ignition in an enclosed engine hatch.
Secondly the old volvo dissy had a fire retardent mesh covering holes on the bottom of the housing-electronic dosen't. (Does this affect insurance having an aftermarket dissy with no fire re-tardent escape)
Thirdly do you need to run a balluste resister with electronic ignition.
Any help, experiences & advice would be greatly appriciated.
Cheers all.........

Seasport Charter Weekend
Submitted by Goodz on Wed, 2011-03-02 14:44Just another typical trip out with Whitey. He got us onto plenty of fish even though they were not really on the chew and we still managed a good bag each of the 3 days out. Dhuies, Baldies, Black Ass, heaps of just size Snapper, Dollies and Tuna. Also had one brief marlin hook up though we didn't really put any effort into chasing them (had to keep the old bait fisho's happy).
Thanks again Whitey for the great weekend and cheers for putting in the extra effort all the way to the end, even after 7 days of charters straight for you!

Had perfect weather with every morning a glass off.

Heaps of small pinkys were caught over the weekend.

Nice Dhuie caught on the light PE1 gear. Fell to old faithful McArthy Paddletail in Baby Elf.

Caught my first Dollie, the smallest of the dozen or so caught! Still a fun catch.

A nice double on the bait to Nev.

Heres my effort at a double. 2 bakers on the jig!

A Stripey jigged up after having another jig bitten off by a mackie/wahoo right under the boat.

Dhuie of the trip. 15kg landed by Brendon.

Nice Black Tip landed on a livebait.

Hmmm Perth it is
Submitted by old salt on Wed, 2011-03-02 07:36Hey lads,
Perth it is
after securing a job in April, what should I expect fishing wise after a 3 year working holiday in Darwin and 30 odd years of fishing in Vic and NSW??? I'll be based around Spearwood and have previoulsy fished out of anything that floats or any piece of land near the water
Look forward to catching up with a few of you to give me the good oil on the fishing scene over there. I had a bit of a look at the new regulations in WA and I must say I was shocked at the new limits? I guess there all right if you catch a reasonable amount of fish to feed your family most trips, but i wonder if this the case? As we all know fish feed at certain times and every second trip can be fruitless?
What is the blue water scene like in particular kingfish and bluefin, I'm guessing a minimum 6m boat is required to reach the grounds. Land based I'm guessing is off and on like most places, and boat fishing much the same???
Anyways look forward to getting over there and doing a bit of blue water, bay, kayak, jetski and landbased fishing and hearing the waves pound on the shore again.

Boatramp funnies & stuffups, whats your best
Submitted by Joodles on Tue, 2011-03-01 19:09Hey fella's, digging this one up again to see if there's any fresh stories….......
We've all seen it, the bloke who can't reverse a trailer, the one who forgets the rope or the bungs. The expert who digs the propeller into the concrete or the ultimate stuff up, dumping the whole rig on the deck with the water line a few meters away.
If it's been covered before there wasn't much on the search feature so lets hear about your funniest moment at the ramp.
I had one recently whilst retrieving, a couple of young blokes had this old piece of crap fibreglass tub that I found out later they were 'test driving'. Well they launched whilst I was winching solo. They had a rope on the bow cleat only and it didn't take long for the stern to swing in the breeze and hit my boat. No damage but I recommended he secure his tub which was a waste of time because after hitting me again it started to sink. The water was coming in above the false floor where the battery was sitting with exposed wiring all over the place. He started yelling at his mate coming back from parking the car, 'you forgot the fu**in bungs ya wan**r'. Ahh it was all too much, they started bailing it out, electricial system shorting out. Before I drove off I recommended they take the earmuffs off the outboard if they want to get further than the groin!
Some people were just born not to go near boats
Let's hear all about it...

Right size prop for my boat
Submitted by suicidal gardie on Tue, 2011-03-01 16:01Gudday chaps,
Just wanted to get some thoughts from anyone who has been boating alot longer than I. Bought my 540 profish side console with a 115 Merc 4 Stroke brand new from a boat yard and took it for a 2nd test run after the first prop wasn't right.
This time we hit 36 knots doing 6000rpm on dead flat water with 2 big blokes on board with an 18P stainless steel prop.
My question is, should i go up a prop size? I thought i would have got 36 knots doing a few less rpm's than that with a 115.
Cheers

DIY reel servicing
Submitted by cuthbad on Tue, 2011-03-01 14:29Been getting into servicing my own reels a bit recently. Started just changing drag washers, then a quick clean of the bearings. A while back I decided to do a full strip, clean and service. Gotta say it was pretty rewarding, im not a mechanically minded person but following a good online guide made it easy.
I can understand with really top end stuff its probably worth paying to have it done but I found I got a much better understanding of how my reel works. So far have only done the torium but I have a couple of cheap spinning reels on their last legs, would be grerat if I could give them a few more years as they r only really used for catching bait.
Just wondering if many other people do the same cuz you dont hear much about it on the forums here?
Cheers,
Adam

Kalbarri Classic
Submitted by Mick on Tue, 2011-03-01 12:29G'day guys
Just a heads up for those heading up here for the long weekend/fishing comp. It looks almost certain that the river will be closed by the weekend due to flooding. Not sure what the organisers have in place but with the river closed there will be no access unless you launch at Lucky Bay or Port Gregory.

Rod repair - worth doing for snapped tip?
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2011-03-01 12:14Well, finally had one of my rods snapped (a foot being the suspected culprit whilst it was in the boat cabin).
It was my bream rod, a Strudwick Soft Bod Finesse.
About the first 3 inches got snapped off the top of it.
Has anyone had any experience with repairing these things? Is the rod a piece of junk afterwards or can it be done well?
Any suggestions as to places to get it looked at?
Cheers

I can see 'em but I can't catch 'em!!
Submitted by r.gates on Mon, 2011-02-28 21:21Hi all
Headed out yesterday from The Cut for a long overdue fishing session....Saturday was a better day but I had some family commitments.
Anyway, decided to check out a couple of regular spots as well as sounding over some new ground I chose from the charts.
I have posted a couple of pics I took of the images I was seeing on my sounder (Furuno FCV-620) and I'll give you my interpretation of what I was seeing. Your comments are greatly appreciated, especially as I'm pretty new to this.
1st image:
High Frequency Zoom
Bottom Lock set to 5m
Manual range set to 90m
Bottom lock didn't pick up the line of 'fish' that's 10m above the bottom but it's showing 'something' on the bottom. The bottom is pretty sandy as there's not much colour below the red 'bottom'. I don't know how to interpret the 2nd echo but i noticed Tony Halliday mentioned it on a recent thread.
2nd image:
Different location but with similar settings to the 1st image, except whatever's hovering above the bottom on the right side image is showing about 4m above the bottom on the bottom lock screen. Again, this is a pretty sandy bottom and I was pretty impressed with the red showing on the screen, because to me, this is real evidence of fish under the boat....however, they weren't biting.
This scenario repeated itself at several spots I drifted over and if it wasn't for a flathead taking pity on my empty esky, I would have nothing to put in the pan.
Are these images of schooling fish or more likely bait fish? If you guys think they are fish, is it possible to identify them, size wise, I mean? I get pretty excited when I see these sorts of things show up on the sounder, because to me, they're fish, but the fact that they aren't biting isn't new.
I had fun out there yesterday and it's a pretty steep learning curve but a whole lot of fun all the same. Who knows, next time I could bag out in 2 drops.
Thanks in advance of your comments.
regards
rusty...
PS. Sorry about my reflection in the sounder images.
