snagged cray pots
Submitted by Paul_86 on Thu, 2010-12-09 16:14Hey everyone,
Well i went to pull 1 of my pots the other day and it wasnt quite in the sand where i left it but found it 50m away over the reef. So after 15mins of trying to pull it up and in all different directions i come to the conclusion that its snagged pretty good. So does anybody know any little tricks to unsnag it or do i need to make friends with a diver? Pot is in about 12 to 13 meters of water.
Cheers, Paul

A shark caught in a tangled web of netting off Bondi Beach
A LARGE shark is caught in a tangled web of netting off Bondi Beach - trapped despite its violent death rolls as it tried to escape.
The 2.6m shark was discovered on Tuesday morning in the nets and was still there yesterday as the State Government announced an aerial shark patrol trial.
Experts yesterday said the Bondi shark was most likely a harmless - and endangered - grey nurse, but could be a mako. A large mako would be an unusual visitor so close to a Sydney beach, but the species likes cooler water and several upwellings have pushed cold water on to the city's coastline.
The shark will be retrieved this morning and identified.
This year, NSW's shark nets are being checked every 72 hours, instead of every 96 hours, to give trapped marine life a better chance of being freed alive. And, for the first time, both fixed-wing planes and helicopters will fly the coast spotting sharks. The air patrols are part of a trial which will cover 202km of NSW coast, including 51 netted beaches from Newcastle to Wollongong that also have shark nets.
"Sharks spotted will be reported direct to lifesaving bodies so that swimmers are notified almost instantly," Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said yesterday.

crays and demersals dunsborough
Submitted by wagyl on Thu, 2010-12-09 08:59Hi everyone, great website. Can anyone tell me (I don't want your spots) any general info on where to catch crays and demersals in Geographe Bay/Busso/Dunsborough/Yallingup and what I can expect or hope to get? I have a 23ft boat and will be heading down for Xmas and the times I have been out in the bay haven't been successful. I have been out past the Cape a couple of times to the lumps and that has been a bit better. Maybe I'm just crap at fishing. Thanks for your help.

Beware Telstra Scam?
Submitted by ledge64 on Thu, 2010-12-09 08:55
Two Cons in one day Bugger.....
Hi Everyone,
Please read below and pass on to your family & friends.
I got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service technician who was conducting a test on our
Telephone lines.
He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero ( 0), hash (#) and then hang up.
Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the
Requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows
Them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local gaols/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends.
If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass this on

Cray pots?
Submitted by Oracle on Wed, 2010-12-08 22:06Gang,
Looking at getting a pot for crays this year and running the risk of it getting knocked off for a few tasty entrees. However, every time I've dived and seen a pot, they look pretty darn heavy once they have soaked. How do you guys pull them? Winch or muscle?

Recommendations for stradic 4000fi
Submitted by Just1morecast on Wed, 2010-12-08 16:17Just got a stradic 4000fi and was looking at using it for demersal jigging. What are your thoughts on using it, too small? I normally only jig as deep as 50m. Also i have some braid to spool it with but with what 15, 20 or 30lb? I was reading up it can push out upto 9kg drag. Is that false info as most brands tell a few porkys with there max drag power. Any of you already use it or shall i use it for something else?
Currently using a pfleuger torsion but seems a lil heavy on the pe2 rod, Advice from the jiggers will be a huge help.
Cheers

World Record Tuna
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2010-12-08 15:18
The long-standing world record for the largest tuna ever caught has been shattered by a California man who caught a massive 405.2-pound yellowfin tuna.
Mike Livingston caught the huge fish last Tuesday off the Baja coast while on-board the Point Loma-based boat Vagabond during a Mexican trip.
His crew pulled into San Diego bay yesterday to a crowd of curious onlookers eager to see the monster catch.
Whopper: Mike Livingston (right) single-handedly reeled in the world's biggest yellowfin tuna fish which weighed in at 405.2 pounds
The previous record was set in 1977 when Curt Wiesenhutter caught a 388-pound, 12-ounce yellowfin tuna.
The world record is pending approval by the International Game Fish Association but even if it isn't approved, Mr Livingston's catch is the largest ever landed on road and reel.
Mr Livingston, 63, from Sunland is a long-time angler who retired recently as a school superintendent - he said his catch was 'a fish of a lifetime'.
'It was my moment, my time. I'm certainly not the best angler, but I had enough skill to reel this one in. It was just my day'.
Sushi-bound? The huge tuna was caught off the Baja coast last week and brought to the San Diego bay yesterday
Captain of the ship Mr Lackey said: 'This is a fish of a lifetime for Mike, for our crew, for me and the entire fleet really'.
'It's just an honour to be part of catching such an incredible specimen. I'm still in awe of this fish. It just sets the bar that much higher', he added.
The crew arrived back on dry land yesterday and were eager to tell their fisherman's tales of the tuna that took nearly three hours to reel in.
'Mike was one of the fortunate ones to get bit, and the fight was on', Mr Lackey said. 'He fought it for 2 hours and 40 minutes and we were fortunate to get a gaff in it.
The tuna weighed 405 pounds which broke the previous record set 33 years ago when a 388-pounder was caught
Mr Livingston's previous big catch was a 100-pound yellow-fin, and although he hoped to catch a fish over 200-pounds, he never thought in his wildest dreams he would make a catch so huge.
'I listened to the crew and took instructions. Someone asked me if it felt like two and a half hours, and I said it really didn't it felt like 45 minutes really.
'I just leaned back in that harness and took what the fish gave me. I didn't even break out into a sweat. I didn't have to put the reel into second gear until the last 45 minutes of the fight'.
Fishy tale: The crew of the Point Loma-based boat Vagabond celebrated their historic catch
Mr Livingston's tuna is not only the biggest ever landed by an angler, but it also is the largest ever caught without any back-up reels or assistance from the crew.
It has been a season of big fish for the San Diego sport fleet. Early last month, Oregon's Greg Koonce caught a 379.8pound yellowfin tuna. It was the third yellowfin over 300 pounds caught in the season. Dan Nagy from Utah landed a 345.2-pounder

Jurien FADs Launch Dec 7 2010 with new pics
Submitted by till on Tue, 2010-12-07 19:26Hiyas,
I was lucky enough to get a ride up to Jurien With Peter and Rhyss from the PGFC this morning. We met Whitey from Jurien Seasports on his boat, his deckie Matt, Jurien local and PGFC member Brad and Fisheries officer Adam there as well.
There was little swell but more wind, the conditions were fine in the 56' westcoaster, but probably would've been pretty ordinary on a trailer boat. We started at the Southern end of the strip, Launching Seasport, working up to the PGFC FAD and then finally the RED FM FAD in the North. We did a little bit of trolling in between the launches, with just one solid BZZZZT, probably a very lucky Striped or Yellowfin Tuna.
The coordinates ala iPhone;
Seasports: 30° 26.435 S 114° 37.748 E
PGFC: 30° 20.379 S 114° 36.075 E
RED FM: 30° 13.374 S 114° 34.028 E
The coordinates from chart;
Seasports: 30° 26.28 S 114° 37.66 E
PGFC: 30° 20.182 S 114° 36.14 E
RED FM: 30° 13.177 S 114° 33.91 E
