Nefarious malodorous bottom feeders with malicious intent (evil smelling nasty bastards)
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2016-08-25 17:39Some time back I put up a post stating that I thought that some of the fishos showing off their latest catch which had the fish covered with blood etc might be better off showing their catch with a nice clean clear of blood. The reason I put this up was that a good friend of mine gave me heads up that an infamous group of low life bottom feeders was about to use such photos showing bloodied fish in a campaign against the taking of fish and were going to allude to the suffering these fish endured during the fight.
It is with great regret that I see the mentally disturbed amongst the general public have finally struck. In the latest issue of the "Western Angler" magazine the editorial written by a highly respected fishing writer details the event which befell a southern fisho, who happened to catch a sizable tiger shark. After a quick photo the hook and accompanying wire trace was removed from the shark and it was quickly returned to the water. The next day the community minded fisho notified the Fisheries dept. that there was a sizable tiger shark at large in the immediate area.
Now most logical thinking people would be thinking good job well done on returning the fish to the sea as it is against the law to keep sharks of this size. Not so fast there cobber. The next thing that happens is the fisho has the fisheries officers at his door who then proceed to read the riot act to him explaining that a complaint has been received from a member of the public and they are at his door to interview him about the incident and in their opinion the fisho should have cut his line the very moment he realized that he had a shark that exceeded the maximum size allowable.
Reading between the lines it appears to me that the interview was not the most pleasant of experience to go through. At the back of the same magazine in an article written by another well respected and highly qualified fishing writer there is an article written under the heading "back lash" which alludes to the blurring of people's identity to protect them from the mentally sick amongst the general population who have taken it upon themselves to being subject to unpleasant actions from the save everything from human interaction brigade.
Now let me state here and now that I strongly support the state fisheries dept who by and large do all of us a good service, however I will also point out to them when I'm of the opinion that they have acted in a most foolish way, like they have over the tiger shark incident. If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable, the fisho reported to fisheries of his own bat what had happened and given them a heads up about the shark in the area then, then is subject to a lecture on how the fish should have been dealt with and they have acted on a complaint from the human excrement of a person who has made a malicious complaint.
I'm very much appreciative of what is required when a member of the public makes a complaint to a public officer, a simple notation on the top of the complaint NFAR (no further action required) would have saved hurt feelings and negative feelings being generated.. Lets see a bit of common sense being applied on the job fisheries.

Alternative to Steep Point in May
Submitted by mrwinta on Thu, 2016-08-25 00:18I was a bit slow off the blocks this year and missed my chance to book a site for the end of May at Steep.... I also read we can't have fires there now which is a shame.
So my question is can anyone suggest another destination that offers the same as Shelter Bay as it is perfect for what we want. Quiet, beach camping/ fishing, fire pit, swimming, somewhere to moor the 6.5m Barcrusher, simmilar fishing to steep ie pallagics, reefies, somewhere to paddle the kayaks and maybe a bit of spearing?
Cheers
Winta

Dinghy leaning to one side
Submitted by Comrad on Mon, 2016-08-22 17:57Hi everyone.
I'm chasing people's advice about operating a dinghy by yourself. I have a 3.75m round nosed punt which I'm in the process of improving ahead of making it a cartopper and heading over to Townsville. I've recently upgraded from my 20 year old Mariner, to a brand new shiny Yamaha, and it runs perfect. I've been taking it for trial runs with my dad, and I reckon its pushing 25 knots. I took it out for a solo run on the weekend, and found that it was riding way too high, so I trimmed it down as far as it would go, and I get a much better plane, but, as soon as I hit a bump, etc... the boat tends to list fairly heavily to starboard (I'm sitting at the starboard stern). I found that if I attached the extender handle to the engine and sort of went closer to the centre of the boat, there was no issue.
Obviously the ideal solution is to have a counter weight diagonally across from me in the boat, but I'll be doing a fair bit of solo stuff, and I cant exactly lump 100 kg of stuff over in the other side of the dinghy. Does anyone have any ideas about how to stop the listing problems? I want to be able to sit comfortably at the rear of the boat, and be comfortable at moderate speeds. I tried googling the issue, but, I found the internet surprisingly unhelpful.

Cockburn Sound Clarification
Submitted by mermaid hunter on Sun, 2016-08-21 01:45I've been fishing the sound for years for all species available at the time and have a fair idea of where things are....
And I find it funny when someone catches a snapper out of the sound they say it was caught at the Gravel Patch, is this a generic term for "Yeah mate, as if I'm telling you..." OR " Just where the other boats were" And from what I can gather there seems to be many versions of where the "Gravel Patch" really is. . .
I was always under the impression that the gravel patch was in the deeper water, as the gravel once came from ships ballasts when they used stones instead of water... Or is this just an old sea dog story?...
I'm not chasing spots,
I'm just after some clarification about this . . .

Australian Junior Billfish Tournament - Exmouth
Submitted by Nailzy on Wed, 2016-08-17 12:46Please see below the tournament flyer for the upcoming Australian Junior Billfish Tournament in Exmouth.
It is a WAGFA sanctioned tournament and is all about the kids.
Last year we had competitors travel from QLD, VIC & all over WA with 6 kids catching their very first billfish with the youngest competitor a smallfry female aged just 7.
I would encourage you to consider (even if you don't have junior kids of your own) to take a neice / nephew / friends kids / next door neighbours kids etc fishing to experience the addictive past time that is Game Fishing.
Nowhere else in Australia has the close proximity to the fishing grounds and the numbers of billfish than Exmouth, making it the perfect venue to host this tournament for junior anglers.
The event coincides with the school holidays.
The cost is only $25 per junior angler which includes a tournament shirt.
The following guides and tournament sponsors still have these dates available if any of you wish to take advantage of their local knowledge & expertise.
Captain Eddy Lawler, Peak Sportfishing - 0408 734 717
Captain Ben Knight, Ningaloo Sportfishing - 0437 917 427
I will be sure to post a full report at the completion of the event.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Regards
Scott.

Thanks Fishwrecked and PB Bream
Submitted by Bombero on Wed, 2016-08-17 11:29Hi All
I'm a lurker, not a poster but just wanted to drop in and say thanks to all the people that contribute on this site. I for one have learnt al lot about fishing and how to improve. From bream fishing in kayaks in the Swan to Salmon down Sth and the Friday funnies and all the bits in between I now do more catching and a bit less fishing than I used to.
I am land based and use bait. Never had much luck with lures although I bring them out once in a while to see how I go.
Had the pleasure of taking my nearly 80 year old dad fishing on the weekend in the Canning river. We caught a few and had a good time. I was lucky enough to get my PB Bream. 43cm, unweighted hook, 6lb leader and line with a bit of shelled prawn. My new "secret" spot, about number 7 for the afternoon, was chosen because I could park close by and the access to the sand was easy. So not very hi tech.
