the FADS
Submitted by freoboy on Mon, 2011-05-09 20:02
Hi all,
I am a long time reader but a first time poster. I was hoping to head out to the FADS this coming weekend with a few mates but I read on another website that the fads are usually brought back in the first week of May for servicing. Can anyone tell me if they are still there or if they will still be there this weekend?
Any info would be great :)
Cheers

Submitted by glastronomic on Mon, 2011-05-09 18:57I would like to hear from people who have been to the Mackerel Islands and got there with their own (trailer)boat.
Launch at Onslow or go from Exmoutht?
moorings seem to be available as are cabins.
Any worthwhile info is most welcome.
Thanking you up front for your contribution.

Looking for a deckie slot: Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 May
Submitted by till on Mon, 2011-05-09 18:48Hiyas,
seems I'll be left to my own devices again for the weekend, my partner and son are off over east for a short holiday.
Sounds like I need to get some fishing in!
FADs, deep drop, demersal jigging, cray dives; you name it, I'm keen! Don't mind a drive either, happy to put some miles on the car as no one really needs to know where I am ;)
Always happy to chip in for bait and juice etc!
TIA

Submitted by JohnF on Mon, 2011-05-09 16:18Bit of a troll last Thursday with Till. Did everything in our photographic abilities with an iphone to make it look as big as possible.......hahaha...........nice one Jamie!

Scaly or Blue Mackerel??
Submitted by mosley2008 on Mon, 2011-05-09 14:15Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone knows the specific differences between blue mackerel and slimy mackerel. Have caught plenty around freo wharf and moles lately and had much heated discussions with many other fisho's to the exact species being caught. I thought blue mackerel were bigger and had a blue/silver sheen to their backs while slimies have black, green and sometimes yellow marks on thier backs and sides?? I think we have been getting slimies as they are have black patterns on their back and green/yellow on their flanks, could someone confirm or disprove this theory???

How to fight fish that jump out of the water
Submitted by hk85 on Mon, 2011-05-09 12:59Hi guys,
tried searching for some advice with little luck - so apologies if it has been covered already. What's the go when you are fighting fish that like a bit of aerial acrobatics to prevent them throwing the hooks? Is it better to give it line or loosen up on the drag or just keep it tight? Also does the same info apply to all fish ie same technique on chopper tailor as mahi mahi..
Thanks in advance!!!

Bringing Squid onboard without getting inked
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2011-05-09 10:54Reading Ben Derecki's post on the super squid had me thinking.
How do everyone bring a squid onboard.
I personaaly follow Ryan Thipthorp's idea that I saw on a FWA video/episode years back, where you bring the squid close beside the boat, grab it behind the head, point it at the water, and stirr it up with a couple of light squizes, then into a 10l bucket, and then transfer it to an ice slurry bucket.
I have done it this way for years, even prior to seeing the video, but I was still wondering how others keep the boat clean.
Cheers

Gimble and back brace suggestions for back problems..
Submitted by PattyT on Mon, 2011-05-09 08:39Hey guys,
Iv recently stuffed my back (slipped disc) and have 28 days till I go away for two weeks on a fishing trip. If i went today i think i wold have massive problems fishing. Cant really bend over at all but hopefully it will be a fair bit better once the trip rolls around. Anyway, just wondering if anyone on here has been in the same situation and what have you used. I dont really mind spending a few hundred dollars as long as it gets me through the trip.
Ta guys, fingers crossed it gets better.

thanks again seabreeze!!!!!!!!!!!!!NOT!!!!!!
Submitted by Ryan C on Mon, 2011-05-09 06:28did anyone else go far offshore on Saturday?? we went out of mindarie in the "fresh" easterly of about 15/18 knots which is fine in my boat and were expecting the winds to drop throughout the morning to lunchtime to the predicted 10 knots or so then increase back to 15, well as per usual with seabreezes forecast by 8.00 we were 18 mile out and it started to blow about 400 knots!!!(i estimate 35/40) and the sea got ugly real quick!! anyway after a marathon voyage back in at about 8 knots into some very steep 2.5/3 m wind waves we got back in without even 1 drop on the fish!! SEABREEZE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHEERS

Stradic 6000Fi
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2011-05-08 20:04Hey all,
Hey i think im going to get a 6000fi for beach and boat fishing. I have a few questions about it.
Does it have the same body as the 8000, if so does that mean i can put my spare 8000 spool on it?
How much 30lb braid would the 6000 hold and also how much does the 8000 hold?
Last question i think, what is a good graphite spinning rod that is capable of 30lb braid and around the 200 mark?
Cheers danno

New rod advice needed
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2011-05-08 19:24Hi all,
Recently snapped my Berkley Dropshot 2-4kg 2 piece and soon looking to replace it with another similar rod. Light, graphite (preferably) and intend to match it with a Team Daiwa Advantage 2500.
Budget: Up to $150, but would prefer to keep the cost down.
Any suggestions / advice?
Thanks,
Buschy

Scalies?
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2011-05-08 19:22I need to go catch a few mulloway lollies in the next week or so. Has anyone seen much scaly action lately? Not sure if they are around all year or come and go?
Will most likely burley up and drop the feathers off the end of the Ammo Jetty unless someone can suggest a more likely location?
Cheers,
Buschy

Mullet
Submitted by Richard Snellin on Sun, 2011-05-08 15:50Does anyone have any ideas onhow to catch mullet on a rod/reel.I caught 1 a few years ago on a bloodworm but i think it was a fluke...
i've been seeing some stonkers in the river lately and i reckon some of them would nudge 2kg, i'm sure they would be great fun on light tackle! i've heard of people catching them on corn/cabbage and even cheese but just wondering if anyone else has had any successful stories??

Same tackle....same bait....and two of them even had identical rods reels and braid! and we were all casting in about the same spot......so I guess when your hot ya hot, and when ya not ya not....Hahahahahaha.

Another squid fish
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2011-05-08 09:07Hey all.
Got home from work yesturday at 2 and asked my mate if he wantd to go for a squid later on. We got ready around 6.30/7 and got there around 8ish. First look at the spot and there were heaps of people on the rocks. They hant got anything but were all going for squid. They were useing cheap 3.5s and working them near the surface. I found a rock inbetween everyone but out of people's way and started casting my Yamashita Glow white jig in 3.0. I let it sink heap with lots of pauses and had one third cast. Everyone around didnt mined to much. I then hook another and then another as i was getting the third squid off he had a follower and i thought i would try and get it to but as i flicked the jig out it caught on one of my squid on the rocks that was still alive and ended up in the water shooting off lol. Anyway a jig change to a Yamashita Naory 2.2 and short flicks in close and i had another two on the rocks. By this stage people were getting annoyed and one couple at the point of the rocks yelled out Really we havnt got any in an annoyed voice. I had a person casting infront of me trying to caught squid and then another move to my other side and was also cast over me and then some one had to nerve to stand on pretty much the same rock as me and try and cast and i was like no man the squid are every where not just here. Anyway with all these people not catching i caught another couple ending up with 6. I was just about to leave when i sore someone hooked up to a squid, they really didnt want to lose it even tho it was small and they lent over the rocks lost balance and fell in and they also lost the squid. He wasnt hurt and was laughting.
Had enough of people casting over me so went to woodies and it was blown out so i walked down to the end and was casting over the north bank and it was really hard to tell what my jig was doing. A few casts later i hood an alright ( 15cm hood), that made the others look even smaller. Any way that was the end out the night with 7 small bait size squid for me and my mate also got the 1 but hes not very patient.
I have photos but my computers still buggered getting it fixed this week i hope so ill have some photos then.
Cheers danno.
Cone bay & wind
Submitted by Percula on Sun, 2011-05-08 09:00Hi All
Meant to be heading to cone bay this week, but the wind is not looking the best!
Does anyone know how the wind affects the bay up there?
I imagine the wind is going to make the crossing from one arm point hard, but interested in how the bay itself holds up with the wind or if it becomes really uncomfortable. Only going to be in 4.4 & 4.8m tinnys so nothing huge!
Any past experiences by anyone?
Thanks
David
