Stella HG or PG?
Submitted by christopher daniels on Fri, 2006-09-15 08:31I am about to get a Stella for my birthday from my dearest other half, now the biggest question is what to get. There are 3 choices for me, basically the FA which I can easily get over here, and the SW in HG or PG which I need to get from overseas. I am now more keen on the SW as i heard it comes with 2 spools.
Question now is this, shall I get the HG or the PG? I will be doing mostly sambo jigging and the occasional trip to exxie popping for GTs. I am now thinking of getting the PG for the big spool capacity but am still wondering if I can get the best of both worlds by getting a spare set of HG internals for popping chucking.
Has anybody tried to see if the internal gearings can be swopped and is the process easy to handle? I am pretty handy at servicing my own reels but the stella looks a little intimidating compared to my Penns. Also, what are the parts I need change for the conversion and where can I get the parts. As much as I love to own 2 reels, its hard to justify that to a non fishing partner even if its for my birthday, but hey whose complaining......

Shimano Trinidad vs. Daiwa Saltiga
Submitted by jay_burgess on Thu, 2006-09-14 15:30I'm still looking for an overhead outfit for bottom fishing and jigging. I'm thinking I might go up a notch from what I was previously looking at and now I'm considering the Trinidad and Saltiga (overhead).
I've heard some problems about the anti reverse on the trinidad can anyone confirm this? I also heard that the saltiga has a better and a higher max drag than the trinidad, is this so?
Which one is the lighter reel as this is a major factor when I look at overhead outfits.
I haven't heard anything bad about the Saltiga which is why I'm leaning towards it a bit more over the trinidad.
The models I'm looking at will be the Trinidad 16 or the Saltiga 20 or 30 loaded with 50lb braid. Oh I also heard that the Saltiga 30 doesn't have a clicker, does this mean it doesn't make the noise when drag is pulled.
Thanks for your oppinions.
PS. Would it be worth the extra $100 for the Z model or the 30T, and what is the differences?

Fishing in Japan
Submitted by galeintokyo on Fri, 2006-09-08 16:53How's it going everyone?
I wanted to make a query on this forum about whether or not any of you were considering going to the international sport fishing show in Tokyo next January. The reason that I'm asking is because I am looking to put together a charter for a one of the days around then to have a jigging expedition for any visitors who might be interested in seeing how we do it here. We'll be going after yellowtail and amberjack, but there's probably a possibilty to boat a few tuna as well. If any of you are intereted, drop me a line when you get a chance. I'm simply looking to get a ball park idea of how many people are interested. If you have any questions email me.

ICAST 2006
Submitted by SHizz on Fri, 2006-08-25 17:49Well, last month there was one of the biggest US tackle shows on, suprised nobodys mentioned much about it. Just had a look about a week ago at the winners of the best of shows. The new Penn torque looks not bad, kept the unique International shape to em.
Fireline crystal won best over all. The new Evair boots look intersting too by shimano.

Worldwide Fishing Predictor
Submitted by Andy Mac on Sun, 2006-08-20 21:17A good friend of mine has given me the "Worldwide Fishing Predictor" software so I am now able to see what moon phases, tidal movements and every other little criteria is supposed to do to the day's fishing.
As an example Tuesday through to Friday of this week is supposed to be red hot fishing with an 80% score according to the predictor for Perth. I can plug in other locations and see what it says if anyone is interested.
Minor and Major feeding times for Perth waters is as follows:-
Minor Major Minor Major
Tues 22 02.31am 07.42am 12.58pm 08.04pm
Wed 23 03.03am 08.27am 01.56pm 08.48pm
Thu 24 03.31am 09.09am 02.52pm 09.28pm
Fri 25 03.57am 09.48am 03.47pm 10.07pm
Sat 26 04.21am 10.27am 04.40pm 10.46pm
Sun 27 04.45am 11.06am 05.34pm 11.26pm
Notably Saturday is the Apogee (a particular moon phase) and is at 70% and Sunday is at 60%
Would be interesting to see how accurate this thing is.
Does anyone have an absolute red letter day in recent history, as I can check back and see what it said about that location and that day.

Fishing sat or sun
Submitted by bouttime on Sun, 2006-08-20 19:02Anyone thinking about going out sat or sun. I was looking to head up to two rocks and as i have never fished there before thought it would be a good idea to head out with someone that knows the area.
If not might head out to the containers, Rotto as there are some good fish out there at the moment.

Weekend Fishing - 19/20th August
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-08-18 12:31Forecasts:
Friday until midnight: N/NW winds 18/23 knots increasing to W/NW 20/30 knots during the afternoon, easing to W/NW 15/20 knots near midnight. Seas to 1.0m rising to 2.5m. Swell to 1.5m.
Swell at Cottesloe: 0.5m.
Winds on Melville Water: 5 knots lighter tonight.
Saturday: W/NW winds 15/20 knots increasing to 20/30 knots by the afternoon, reaching 25/33 knots for a period late afternoon and evening. Seas to 2.5m. Swell rising to 2.5m.
Sunday: W/NW winds 10/20 knots.
The conditions look pretty average again this weekend, no suprise I hear many say!
Hope for everyone outside the Perth Metropolitan area that fishing conditions are better for you, please feel free to drop in a report or some photos of your fishing experiences.
Cheers,
Adam
Bang for buck
Submitted by seansurfy on Thu, 2006-08-17 13:44OK guys, nice and simple.
A mate of mine is on a trip with me to the Coral Sea in November...he wants a new reel. He's got a Shimano TLD 25, Penn Spinfisher 950 with an upgraded drag system and an ABU 7000.
He wants an overhead that can handle 50lb braid fished hard, but light enough to use all day long. It will be used mainly for bottom bashing and jigging......$250-$300 budget(without line).....what is the best bang for buck!

Urethane foam lures?
Submitted by galeintokyo on Wed, 2006-08-16 00:40Hows it going out there,
Old man weather is making life difficult for saltwater anglers in Japan right now. We keep getting typhoons which cool the water temperature way too low for tuna and dorado. Since I'm not fishing so much I've decided to get down to making some pens and poppers for use towards the end of the month when the down current skipjack and tuna start running.
I've narrowed down a few designs that I want to take out on the water next trip, but I'm having a delimma as to whether I should paint the balsa wood models I've made or use them to make silicone molds from which I can make urethane foam lures. I like the idea of experimenting with urethane foam because I can make multiple copies of a good design fairly quickly, but I'm not sure how the material will perform on the ocean.
Have any of you guys ever used urethane foam lures instead of wooden lures for offshore boat game? Good bad experiences ,opinions, etc? Look forward to your responses.

Where do I go from here?
Submitted by Stiff Ripples on Tue, 2006-08-15 19:19I fish weekly from Mindarie and do quite well but have not ventured much further than the 3 mile reef. We catch a lot of bread and butter fish but are over ripe to head out further and get into some bigger action. We fish in an 18ft boat and fish nearly all conditions (within the 3 mile reef). Can anybody give us some hints about travelling further and finding some good ground? Got NAVMAN tracker 5500 and Fish 4500? Otherwise, always an extra spot on the boat for another fisho.

Hypothetical
Submitted by Maverick on Sun, 2006-08-13 16:15If you saw some one fishing somewhere would you fish that spot later on.
Like if you saw someone on a rock somewhere along the coast , would you go there to have a try as well, or if you see a boat drifting along somwhere would you ping the spot and go back later to give it a go .
I read some people will only fish some spots at night or early morning so no one see's them , do we really have to be so secretive ????
I have never pulled up to a spot and thought " wow someone is here I better not fish here "
What do you guys recon ???

2006 Perth International Boat Show - Who's going?
Submitted by Andy Mac on Sat, 2006-08-12 10:18Had a look at the spread in Saturday's West Australian and it looks like this year might be a bit better than the last one. I was particularly excited by the prospect of wine tasting at the same venue (Hehehe).
Still a distinct lack of tackle shops there (I know the reasons why) but it would be nice to have a bit more fishy content.
The demo's are always great to watch and apparently there is a "fish Fighter" that you can have a go at. Not sure what it is but sounds interesting.
Anyone else going from here?
