Accolades to Fisheries WA Dept
Submitted by Fly on Wed, 2006-04-26 11:39Anyone follows my internet rantings would know I am one of the most harsh public critics of Fisheries WA Dept anywhere!
That said, when they do something good or worthy of positive comment - I feel it is only fair to give credit where it's due!
I can think of TWO instances of late where Fisheries have actually done something good!
One of my frequent lamentations has been in the area of Charter fishing statistical returns!

Easter Photos
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2006-04-25 14:16I have just got a hold of the Easter photos. Make sure you check out the fishwrecked and scenery gallery, some really good shots amongst them. I would put them in a forum thread but there are a few too many. There are a few snaps of my queen snapper, first tagged and released samsonfish, the days catch, surf and scenery photos. Hope you enjoy.
Cheers,
Adam
Here's a teaser. A reminder of catching most of the fish that day. :)

Salmon Season
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sat, 2006-04-08 17:43Well, it is definately salmon season. Between us we managed to land 4 today, with one snapping off under the boat and a couple more going for a decent runs on the trolling gear without hooking up. Plenty of aerobatics made for an awesome afternoon session along with watching big schools bust the sufrace all over the place.
Other catches were;
50cm baldie, 60cm pinkie, 55cm dhuie, 5 blackass, nannygai, sgt bakers, sweep and salmon. Thanks goes out to Andy Mac for letting me have a spot today.
Heading out 2morro
Submitted by TAPOUT on Fri, 2006-04-07 18:09Does anyone know if the sambos are still out the west end off rotto. Got 2 guys tagging along that have never cought anything bigger than a herring. Im pretty keen to test them out on some sambos.Might be a bit cruel but its somthing they will never forget.Plus Ive had a pretty shitty week so i need a laugh.

Next Movie Installments
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2006-04-06 09:04Well, I have just got a hold of Gully's Exmouth footage, and to say that is the best ever is almost an understatement. When I'm able to rip it from dvd and put it up I will gaurantee you that you will be saying its the best ever as well!!!
But, in the meantime I have a heap of footage from Scuttlebutt over in Cairns that I will put up, the files are around 50 meg, but I'm working on making a few smaller versions for fast download time.

Weekend Fishing Plans
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2006-04-05 12:34I know its a bit early for a definitive weather report, but I figure a few of you already know what you want to do.
Gribbo and Ryan are headed out of Ocean Reef for some Dhuie hunting on Friday, so hopefully we should get some early reports of the fish biting and what time they are really on the chew.
Think I'm planning to go out Saturday at this stage, unless Sunday turns up the goods, and if the weather man plays nice maybe even both days.

Salmon
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2006-04-03 11:54A few of you may have heard about the salmon that washed up on the beach a couple of weekends ago down at peaceful bay. Well the story goes that the pro's netted 70 tonne and 2 tonne of those washed up on the beach enraging locals. Apparently the net rolled in a King wave and there was nothing they could do about it, apart from maybe cleaning the beach of dead salmon!

FRA Fishing Rights Alliance!
Submitted by Fly on Thu, 2006-03-16 01:38Do we need such an organisation here?
OK - we have Recfishwest - but IMHO at least, they occsionally appear to be just a bunch of apologists for Fisheries dept WA a lot of the time!!
When was the last time Recfishwest sued the Minister for Fisheres or Fisheries Dep't CEO for failing in their legislated duty to preserve fishstocks for fututre generations?
Isn't it about time we had an organisation with real balls LIKE FRA??
A political party like Fishing Party isn't going to waste $ on law suits - they probably want to spend it on getting elected for the parliamentary pension benefits!
Isn't it about time we had an organisation that goes in hard and takes no prisoners? What about one with a website to post photo's to shame the pro's & WAFIC on their deplorable record?
I say it's well past time IMHO!
Cheers!

Pictures
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Wed, 2006-03-15 13:14I know it is the calm before the fishing storm (the fact that a lot of you are about to go on awesome fishing trips), just wondering if anyones got any more photos out there to look at. Has been a bit quiet lately with the lack of fishing being done, just wondering if anyone's got any that are worth a look that we haven't seen before.

Funny Tackle shop yarn!
Submitted by Fly on Mon, 2006-03-13 23:54Ok heard this one yesterday while waiting to pick up the young feller from the tackle shop.
One of his work colleagues from the tackle shop likes to dive for crays and spear the odd fish.
Lets just say the guys name is 'Courtney'...and he works at scrotally trialed! ;o)
Anyway - he arrives at his choice cray lump to find a couple old guys already anchored there, berleying to fish...
Asks if it'd be Ok to dive the lump? - and is advised - we're burleying already & we'd prefer if you don't scare away our fish - whatabout dive somewhere else? or come back after we've gone?
So - he anchores 50 meters away and dives anyway!
About 10 mins later the dudes in the boat - see bubbles commin up all round the boat - you guessed it the blokes are under their boat getting their crays!
Anyway - while down there he sees a really realy big southern blue groper and, almost outta air - he shoots it with his spear gun.
All is looking good except when he pulls on the spear it comes out - and the big blue sorta struggles away injured! Too late - outta air - gotta go up..
So - he goes back to boat minus big blue groper - cussing and swearing!
Tells everyone at "Scrotally Trialled" how he lost this big Blue groper!
What he doesn't know - is the guys in the boat fishing, are regular customers of "scrotally trialled!" ;o)
After fishing is over without a lot to show for it since everythings been scared away - the two old guys are pulling the anchor - and see something a bit 'red looking' under the water a little distance away!
Once the anchors up they motor over for a looksee, to find a huge blue groper with it's swim bladder extended swimming in circles!
So they gaff it and take it home to eat!
It has a hole in it where the spear pulled out!
So - they go in to the tackle shop to tell everyone of their great "catch" while "Courney's" on his day off!
So - when he gets back to work (which likely mighta been today!) EVERYONE in town almost (except him) knows about his Big Blue Groper and who got to eat it! ;o)

Fly Fishing
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2006-03-13 14:47Well, Gribbo has bought the first fly rod amongst the group and I assume that means there will be a big fly buy up at the tackle store once the word spreads of how good it is.
Can anyone give me any information about fly fishing, tips, techniques or anything that will help us get into it a bit more.

Headsup Water Police IN Manurah all weekend for Crabfest!
Submitted by Fly on Fri, 2006-03-10 21:38Just a headsup for anyone contemplating a weekends crabbing at Mandurah for the crabfest, since the offshore conditions are pretty average.
Fremantle water police are in town all weekend for the crabfest, and as a deterent against water based vessel theft at nights...so if venturing out have all your nav lights working and all afety gear on board - never know who you might run into! ;o)
Remember - slow down and keep the waves friendly!
Cheers!

Weekend Fishing
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2006-03-10 10:51Well, what do you know, an absolutely perfect week weatherwise and all of a sudden the weekend pops up with reports like this:
Saturday: S/SW winds 15/20 knots increasing to 20/30 knots in the afternoon. Seas to 2.0m. Swell 1.5m rising to 2.0m.
Sunday: SE winds 18/23 knots tending S/SW 20/25 knots in the afternoon.
Nasty when they torture you all week and then punish you on the weekend!
Might have to give crabbing a go this week.....

Your fish taste - Rankings
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Thu, 2006-03-09 09:08Saw a thread a while back that gave me a pretty good idea.
Just wondering what everyones preference is in regards to fish. Maybe list your top 5 fish and the ones you would prefer to catch in relation to taste. In other words, what do you reckon are the best to chew on?
Mine would be:
1) Groper
2) Coral Trout
3) Mulloway
4) Breaksea
5) King George
Sure theres heaps more, but they are the ones that spring to mind. I do find Dhuies pretty good, but still think theres plentry of others that taste better. But its a personal thing and everyone has their own preference... So what's on your list?

Not just whales
Submitted by Big Frank on Sun, 2006-03-05 08:32Apart from slaughtering whales in the name of scientific research, Japanese fishermen admit that they took 1500 tonnes of illegal southern bluefin tuna in addition to their allowed 6000 tonnes last year and expect the illegal figure to rise furthur this year (Sunday Times, 5 March, page20).
While the governemnt has promised to be more protective of our coastline against subsistence Indonesian fishermen who risk their lives in crappy (but getting better) boats to feed thier families, why do the authorities seemingly do nothing against modern boats fishing for profit?

Livey Brews!
Submitted by SHizz on Sat, 2006-03-04 16:38After buying a new pump to put on a bucket as a livey one i saw that article in wangler the other week and decided that my old home brew kit is perfect!
Screwed a clip on the side of it , mounted the pump - Might put velcro on tho as its easier to to take off.
Went to city farmers and bought an extra aerator stone and a splitter. Joined it all up and voila!
Good thing is i can tell the water temp, and the tap means its easier to drain the water out at the end. The 2 aerator stones seem to keep the fish pretty healthy too.
Edit - Tryin to post a picture but server isnt workin properlly (Adam....!):P
