Darwin - Million Dollar Fish
Submitted by Ricko19 on Mon, 2015-08-24 14:22G'day all
Myself and my Dad have signed up for the NT Million Dollar fishing competition. Having never been to Darwin before thought I'd see if anyone here knows a thing or two. We are heading up at end of October - anyone recommend accommodation Darwin central? mum is coming up too so we need a 2 bedroom apartment, is it best to stay in Darwin CBD, out of town etc? We are planning on 3 days of fishing, 2 for Barra and 1 ocean going for reef fish. Any recommendations on fishing charters? Don't want to go with 12 others on a boat prefer small.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Trailer damage.
Submitted by Rosie on Sun, 2015-08-23 20:47Came back from a day on the water today (out of hillarys) to find that someone had "modified" my trailer. The light bracket on the right side was bent on 45 degree angle and there's a black gouge along the wheel guard. The person that did this sure as hell would have known it. Asshole. Hopefully harbour management can review the cctv and identify said asshole. If anyone saw the incident please let me know. Cheers.

We were there in April & took a sketch to post up but I have misplaced it. Humpfffff.
If anyone knows anyone heading up there, can you ask them to note it down.
Thanks....

Derby day delights (pic heavy)
Submitted by sea-kem on Sun, 2015-08-23 09:30A few pics from the recent Gnaraloo adventure, the first few are from derby day we had fished, killed it then listened to the derby on the way in and while we filleted with a few beers. Made for an awesome day. The rest of the pics are just random shots through the trip. We fished for 6 days solid and bagged out. Had a trolling day last Wednesday and nailed a double hit of big Yellow fin Tuna also Spaniards and Mack Tuna. A great way to spend the arvo with a few beers.
Can't wait to get up there next year with my boys.

Electric reel wiring
Submitted by ChrisG on Sat, 2015-08-22 19:05crew
for those guys that use electric reels, are there any issues with interference or potential damage to other gear like sounders and gps etc?
do you run an extra batt?
Hook reel up to your normal batteries that are wired up to your electronics?
Or just take an independent batt no wired into anything other than the reel and just put it on charge she you get home?
Thanks
Chris

Tomorrows weather?
Submitted by merdel12 on Sat, 2015-08-22 09:29after some advice from my local fishwrecked members on tomorrows wind forecast off Perth. Our plan was to anchor north of rotto in about 30m of water but ive always only gone out when seabreeze has forecast its wind in the red. what do you experts think? 10-15knot easterlies tomorrow with 1mish swells off the north of rotto. Plan b is the 5 fathom and plan c is go for a squid! Boat is 6.6m and ive got 110m of anchor rope

yamaha issues
Submitted by Saulty2 on Sat, 2015-08-22 08:06just wondering if its normal for the tilt trim brackets to scrape against one another and making a screatching noise when lowering to wash down { does not happen all the time } ive contacted the sales yard they in turn sent to yamaha and yamaha says they wont do anything about it , its a 200 4 stroke and problem started within 9 months from new. oil leak started from 6 months of new and eventually after many months of complaining and countless emails they , fixed the problem.

Trailer Axle.
Submitted by Deckie on Fri, 2015-08-21 15:11Hi folks, just chasing some opinions on trailer axle positions.
I am building a 8 x 4 box trailer for general use & a once a year trip into Steep Point or the like.
In your opinion, would you under sling the axle or have it on top of the springs.
It is an unbroken box trailer (750 kg)with 1100kg 8 leaf springs.
The hitch sits at around 570mm from the floor which is about 100mm higher than my tow hitch on the car.
How much difference , besides height, would it make to the load carry if I put the axle on top of the springs.
I realise that the downward pushing load goes from being on the springs to pulling down on the u-bolts to the springs.
Carrying under a tonne with heavy springs, do you think it would be to the detriment on the suspension.
Your opinion is appreciated in this matter.

Fishing Bernier Island
Submitted by mallesh on Fri, 2015-08-21 10:22G'day friends,
on our recent trip to Bernier island we had lots of fun catching your usual species pinks, cods and your pelagics behind the island.
The biggest problem we encountered was not sharks, the amount of golden trevally we landed.
Its good to catch a couple but then it becomes too tiring. Trust me they are f#$%kin hard work.
My question: Is this very common around this part of the world or just seasonal.
Also we went chasing reds and coral trout NW behind the island probably 8kms. we found some nice ground and my first drop produced a small red to 50cms and couple of amber jacks. Then same problem GT's invaded the spot.
So, are we fishing in the right ground or what can we do to avoid this teasers.
Also, if someone can put us in the right direction to find decent grounds for reds will be much appreciated. Not asking for spots just a general idea of the area. (Even happy to consider spot swapping)
Thanks in advance.

GPS help required
Submitted by Lastchance on Thu, 2015-08-20 11:46Hi all,
i have a lowrance Lcx 112c that I use as a gps. Well I used to. It died 3 days before our comp up here which was less than ideal. Luckily (ish) I backed up the spots 2 years or so ago, but there are a number of spots on it that I would love to get back.
Lowrance have said they can repair it, but more than likely the spots will be gone.
So, does anyone out there know of an electronics repairer that might be able to weave some magic and get the old girl and her secrets back.
In return you can have all of the spots that are on it - @ 600 spots between Samson and Exmouth. 28 years worth. And a block of export.
Thanks guys and gals.

The new boat
Submitted by rigpig on Wed, 2015-08-19 09:28I should probably put this on the brag board because this is what I'm doing but I'm stoked in my new boat. Two years of procrastination and I finally made a choice in what my last boat will be and this is it. New Bar Crusher 670HT.
I've added heaps of options like anchor and cray winches, cray pot tipper, trim tabs and ballast flap etc.
The maiden voyage was last Saturday where I launched from Pt Peron to Rotto then Fremantle, coogee, Cockburn Sound and back to the ramp. loved it. The 200 Suzuki was a beast.
I will add that my maiden voyage was almost like the titanics when I forgot about the kill tank bung and had some water come in but the bilge pump sorted that out. I put it down to a thorough test of its abilities. The girlfriend puts it down to me being an idiot..
Anyway, time for some serious boating and fishing. I'll be launching around the Rokko, Safety Bay area so say G'day when you see me.
Cheers JJ

Garmin 4012 combo GPS problem
Submitted by Oracle on Tue, 2015-08-18 17:51Hi all,
I've got a Garmin 4012 and the GPS is failing. It will occasionally pick up satellites but keeps dropping out. Runs for a few seconds up to a minute, then drop out for a few seconds but up to hours.
I was told the aerial was busted, so forked out $400. It came on but then died again (as the old one did). Then was told the power cable was stuffed. Replaced that, but nothing.
Now it needs to go to the shop to have the tec's look over it and it'll be about 3 hours ($405 again) to work out hopefully, what the drama is. Maybe...
My concern is $400 for a aerial and anther $405 for a "possible solution" is already $800 out of my pocket that I could put towards another unit. I'll take the aerial back and get $$$ back for that as it wasn't the actual fault. But still down $405 for the tecs to look over what I've already checked.
Before I cry in my weeties and have to look around for possibly another unit, has anyone come across this issue before?
The sounder works fine most of the time. It has "power off" a few times. Ive changed all the cables in the "backbone". It has power but seems to "bump on/off" which leads me to think it's a loose connection. Every connection has been undone and sprayed, checked with a electrical tester and yet nothing as it says it has power. My fear is that it's possibly internal. A new sounder sounds cool but reality is costly and being a flush mount unit, it's a gapping big hole to fix also.
Any help would be great
Thanks
4k or 5k for Snapper
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2015-08-18 15:28Looking for a reel to match a nice rod I've found and am tossing up between putting a 4000 or 5000 shimano reel on it in either a Stradic, Sustain or Biomaster to chase snapper with soft plastics. One of the models has the 4k $100 cheaper than the 5k so I'd like to see if anyone is running with a 4k and wish they'd gone the 5k. I believe the only difference is the spool.

2 Spots Available - 6 Day Montebello's Live Aboard Charter with Bernie Vale
Submitted by Brucesta on Tue, 2015-08-18 08:36Hi Guys,
I've had 2 mates who can't committ to coming with me and a few of my mates to the Montebello Islands with Bernie Vale for a 6 day live aboard charter. Dates are a departure from Exmouth on the 25th October returning on 30th October back in Exmouth with your box of 20kgs fillets and some awesome memories. cost is $3500 per person and i don't think i need to repeat the reputation of Bernie or the Montebello's either. With the bad luck they have had with their boat catching fire while being repaired from the first fire and the downturn in the charter market these guys really need these bookings to go ahead.
Main targets are deep drop for Ruby's and 8 Bar, the typical bottom fishing and plenty of game fishing for Marlin and othwer species along with a day in close chasing those Trout, Blue Bone, thumping spango's and Mangrove jack in the shallows. PM me for more details and full payment to me is due by 25th September. We have a great bunch of guys assembled who just enjoy good times and great fish, we're not hard core jiggers or record chasers we just enjoy the experience and enjoy a few beers when the hard work is done for the day.
Cheers
