Rod for casting lures and baits
Submitted by Justo82 on Mon, 2013-06-24 15:27hi all,
I'm looking at ideas for a rod. I want this for casting mostly lures off the rocks, jetty, beach etc. It won't be used on a boat at all (I have my boat fishing well and truly covered).
I don't do a lot of rock fishing around perth, but figure i'm mostly going to encounter tailor, bonito, and perhaps the odd mulloway (if i'm lucky). as well as the usual whiting, herring and the likes.
I want to cast lures on the most part (as stated above), but also like to soak a bait. A 2 piece rod is a must for storage and transportation. I'd most likely pair it to either a 4000 or 5000 real that i've got now.
I'd give a budget between $80 and $140. I do prefer cork hand grips, but EVA is ok also.
What do you have, or what would you recommend.
cheers,
Justo

tuna skirt recommendations
Submitted by Rig on Mon, 2013-06-24 14:26Hi Crew
I have spent plenty of time over the years trolling around rapalas, halco's etc for pelagics but I have never tried skirts. I am interested in trolling these around a bit faster than lures and for when there is less chance of some mackies and more so tuna, bonito etc
Has anyone got any recommendations for some skirts suitable to be used around metro and maybe occasionally down south or to the midwest. Ideally I want to get them fully rigged but unsure of lengths and maybe some advice on colour
Cheers in advance

Hives from eating fish?
Submitted by Driftking on Mon, 2013-06-24 12:41hi all,
has anybody suffered hives from eating certain types of fish?
the reason I ask is that im new to fishing/boating,so we try eating nearly every type of fish we catch
just to form an opinon.
My daughter came down with a bad case of hives after we caught and filited what ive been told was a Sampson fish.
we eat sand whiting ,hearing all the time with out any probs, so I don't think it was a reaction.
any ideas guys?

Eagle Fishstrike 1000c
Submitted by wicked game on Mon, 2013-06-24 12:05Hey guys and girls,
i bought an Eagle Fishstrike 1000 a few years ago and I love it.
The only problem is that my old boat sadly sunk a couple months ago and along with it went all the Leeds I need for this GPS. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to where I could find new Leeds for my old faithful item. I've been told that these Leeds have been discontinued :(
if anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated
cheers.

Biggest fishing spend in ONE day
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2013-06-24 08:08After watching El Syd's post I thought wow, that if bought in a day would be a cringe worthy spend.
The most I have blinged out in one day would be about $2000.
Not tallying but a StellaSW 10K armed with a Samuria Jig10, Verivas braid and about 10jigs/lures in the bling catecory adds up. (Birthday present and some extra $$$ thrown in)
Also new to Mandurah again (all my old Southwest rods either injured, lost or just plain smashed up here because I utterly love going smaller than wise) and a Sumuria, 2 Sickies (SicStixs), a Sustain and 2 Stradics to match, aswell as the usual extra's add up.
But then I am one lucky and happy camper, as the Mrs loves fishing as much if not more than me. Might then have to split this as its not all for me, but the Stella combo is.

Boat Storage solutions
Submitted by trymyluck on Mon, 2013-06-24 07:59Hi all, the time has finally arrived for me to get a boat again but I cant store it at home, no room., for a year or so until a new house is built. Does anyone have any solutions for me. I currently live just north of the city, and would prefer somewhere reasonably close to here. Maybe someone has a family member who could do with the extra cash whilst providing me with a safe place to store a boat. It would probably be around 5m , not purchased yet. Cheers for any ideas

Yardie Creek Crossing
Submitted by cuthbad on Mon, 2013-06-24 02:31Has anyone attempted this crossing?
Ill be in Exmouth over the first few days in August, at which times the tidal coefficient is quite small, which I think means the low tide wont be all that low (Low tide of 1.00m on the 2nd).
Would love to attempt the drive from yardie creek to coral bay but not willing to take much risk as Ill be in my stock petrol Pajero with no other cars to assist.
Will have a few visitors from Canada along who don't have the passion for fishing we do. Im thinking a trip to see manta rays would be good, any other advice for non fishing activities around Exmouth/Coral bay.
Cheers for the advice,
Adam

Esca Light " HOW DOES IT WORK" Check out the Youtube Link below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNTk8dpF84E&NR=1&feature=endscreen
The Esca have been proven around the world and we have been asked for them before also but now after using them both with bait/patternoster rig setup and jigs we're impressed. They have a soft fade light and soft blink light so not intrusive and very stream line so perfect for bait rigs or jigs!!!!
We've used the Esca fading blue and the Esca blinking blue in the Super Deep and couldnt see a difference between the two but they work. We know a few commercial fisherman doing the Super Deep stuff with Esca and they have been using them periodically on different drop lines to test the results and they said to us they got more bigger fish and more blue-eye with the Esca attached " interesting ".

laptop plugin gps
Submitted by meglodon on Sun, 2013-06-23 22:06Hi All
Has anybody had any experience with the gps units you can plug into a laptop via a usb. I'm thinking of getting one to use with a chart navigation system on a laptop with a 14" screen. The old eye sight isn't as good as it used to be and the large screen hopefully will cure the problems I have trying to see a small 7" screen. If anyone can relate their experience's with this type of gps any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Snapper off metro beaches
Submitted by Scott Family on Sun, 2013-06-23 20:28Hi guys,
Just wondering if anyone can give us a heads up as to where we may be able to catch some descent sized pink snapper from the beach as we will be heading down in next few weeks. Better to have fun fishing than waiting for rain in the country :).
Cheers

The new Girl Key West
Submitted by hayden on Sat, 2013-06-22 20:01Well a couple weeks ago I received the phone call that the boat was in port and on the dock ready for pick up smiles all round for me. quick stop at chivers marine to get a few things then off to freo harbour to pick up the new girl. Have to say I am very happy with the purchase of the Key West and they are built very nice. Picked her up and I could not wait to get it in the water so a quick stop at woodys and in the water she went and even got a couple nice squid on the boat to then back on the trailer she went then back to chivers it went.
I have to say a massive thanks to luke chivers and all the boys at chivers marine for there fantastic effort they did to get the boat and trailer ready for licencing. They have done a great job going over the motor making sure it was ready to go. Had a few hiccups but was expecting that but with great communication from Chivers Marine I allways knew that the boat was in great hands. If anyone has a boat they need servicing or even looking at buying a boat go see luke and chris they will help you as much they can. Thanks guys awesome job.
Also Like to thank Justin from portsea marine for organising the shipping and picking up the boat was also an awesome job your team did. Highly recommend them if anyone is importing a boat. They gave you up to date emails and hone calls on how it was going the whole way through. Justin also organised the building of my tandem trailer from petersons and what a trailer it is built very nice. Few Pics for ya............

Fishing Club participation - still alive?
Submitted by Furious on Sat, 2013-06-22 19:56After only fishing in the midwest now for a number of years, where you usually fish out wide but by yourself (i.e only boat on the ocean) I became involved in a small fishing comp held at the local town every year and anticipate its arival like it was the olympics. I began to remember how much fun it was being involved in a club and it reminded me of the variety of metro based fishing clubs (NOR) we were involved in over the years and the crazy antics, characters and comps/missions.
The mandurah fishing comp was always a highlight as before seabreeze/willy weather you would only rely on the next club member calling you going.... 'yeah shit yeah looks ok for the event, she'll be right......what do you reckon but?' these phone calls would go on amongst the club for the few days before towing the rigs down to mandurah cause no one really had any bloody idea what the weather was going to do in anycase.
Then all the boats in the club would meet up at the ground set aside by the comp and before long there were guys from all clubs around swapping yarns and dishing out well deserved one liners. Im pretty sure the only tactics mentioned back then were to do with survival and ensuring the boat didnt roll over due to bolting the mandatary 5 alveys and 80kg of lead to the side of the boat.... The funniest was when the horn went in the morning on the start line, as none of us had any bloody idea of where to go (no gps)..(idea), however.... stuff it... everyone went hammer down for a 10 minute game of 'my boats the fastest and I have medicare'... after which we would all get on the radio and work out which boat was which amongst the amada of other chiropractic funders......
So much bloody fun.
Are clubs still a major part of fishing life, or has gps/technology made us competitive lone wolves for the most part?

Whats the fish that hooked you ?
Submitted by Vinesh87 on Sat, 2013-06-22 18:56What was the moment in your fishing life that you just knew that you would go to any lengths to catch that next fish ?
I was always interested in fishing catching whiting herring and tailor with my old man and diving and camping but the next experience took it all to a new level where i new it was the start of a very expensive but fantastic hobby.
Mine was hooking my first Mackie out of Finucane in the tinny when i was younger. It was caught on my first boat rod a 24kg ugly stick gold and Okuma TL20 that i still use today some 12 years later. After a epic 20 minutes battle and a very bruised hip i landed the biggest fish i have ever seen.

Green liquid in baldie
Submitted by slam on Sat, 2013-06-22 09:20On filleting a baldy a few days ago i came across a small black sack (peanut sized) filled with a dark green clear liquid near the throat section. Not really in the belly section. Can anyone shed light on this as I have never seen it previously. Unfortunately didn't take a photo.

This sport can kill ya.
Submitted by quadfisher on Fri, 2013-06-21 19:38Did anyone catch the small article in todays West about all those rec fishing deaths.
I also had thought to my self , that the number of accidents had increased, even just
in the last 12 months. There barely seems to be a week that goes by without a wave washing someone off
, a boat going down , or a fisho missing etc etc.
Any theorys? , is it just population, or maybe a lot of new people venturing out, or my
own theory, is that we are so sheltered at work, think s.o.ps ( safe operating procedures) and in
our daily lives ( think signs for every bloody thing), that when people go out they are just not prepared
for something so unpredictable and wild as nature?
And in the face of skippers tickets , updated epirbs and widespread g.p.s , shouldnt we be having less accidents?
