Fishing Discussion

General Fishing Chat

Anyone watching masterchef tonight

Whats the rules with trawlers?? nets full of seaweed whiting, foxfish, scallops and prawns.. blabbing about sustainable... like F!!!! I thought they werent allowed within miles of shoreline... they had phone service to call the rest of the team to know what to get from the shops....

Apart from that, gotta love our beautiful state advertised as somewhere we can get good seafood.. ;)

New boat trailer advice

Took the boat out today and I have realised its time for a new trailer or some major repairs to the old one

I've been puting it off but rust has got the better of it & I reckon its about to fall apart

Any recommendations or things to avoid?

4.5 mtr pressed aluminium boat so it doesnt need to be particularly robust

I would appreciate some guidence

Rod for van staal vm150

Hey fellas

looking for some advice/personal experience. Recently bought a VM150, haven't spooled it up just yet. Go with 30-40lb braid.

looking for a rod to match. Is mainly going to be used in 40-70m off the back of rotto fishing mainly for demersals with bait with some soft plastic fishing being thrown in. But predominantly bait.

I want the rod to be effective, but also like some decent aesthetics to go with the good looks of the VM.

The rods I have been looking at are the samurai reaction bluwater 532 or 602 or the Xzoga taka-pi 7525 or 7626.

what are people's thoughts?

cheers.

What's your dream fishing boat?

Mine would have to be the Caribbean 27ft flybridge Sports Fisherman as in my avatar, but need a lotto win for that or maybe later when we sell up. Been for a ride in one of these and they travel exceptionally well.

King George

Went out off hillarys yesterday for the first time in months while my boat was getting refurbed. I lost all my spots (not that I had many) since having to replace my gps. Picked an area in about 35 meters and sounded round for something interesting did a few drifts till my brother scores a plump kg. Sounded and drifted the area for the rest of the day for another 5 nice kg and one baldy. I've been out and got the odd kg but never a bag like that. My question is did I get lucky or have I stumbled across some potential kg ground. It was quite broken ground as i have read here before

P.s if you see a baron sportsman with grey paint and black canopy might be me, feel free to say g'day

Cheers

Steep point 2013

Just a quick preview of our 3 day trip to steep fishing and diving. Once I've been through all the cameras and go pro's footage ill post a full report but I can't help but share this. My brother is a legend!!! 3 hours after getting there he had his first hookup on ballon on his first time ever helium ballooning. Another epic fish for him and so glad to put him onto it.

reef anchor retrieval

i nearly lost the boat today while i was trying to pull up a stuck reef anchor using the boat motor first tryed to reverse it out and couldnt budge it so i tryed a couple of differet angles then decided to try and get it up by driving over which beryed the bow just as we got smashed by a huge swell luckily i hit reverse and got the bow back out and the anchor rope snapped otherwise we would have had heaps of water over the bow  and being a center console would have been in the boat has any onne out there got another method for getting up stuck anchors

Stickbait Carry Bag?

Hey guys, what sort of bag (soft) would be used for small to medium poppers and stickbaits? Got an HPA one big ones ...  but they're way too big for smaller stuff (3" and under).

I usually take off my trebles and assist hooks while placing them back into bag.... hence looking for soft bag, also to protect paint etc...  too much $$$ for these things nowadays!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

unwanted surprise

In exy at the moment on holidays, staying in a rental in town. Had a great day out yesterday with my oldest lad bagging out on rankin, goldband, sharp tooth, saddle back and spangldies. Lost a heap to sharks and had an unusual catch of catfish from 120mtrs, hadnt seen that before.Had whaale sharks next to the boat and mantas swimming by. Got up this morning and strated cleaning the boat. Looked in the cab and WTF, a used condom and an empty bottle of wine in there. Some dirty skanks have climbed in there during the night, had a shag and left their mess behind. On watch tonight cause if they try it again they are going to hospital with permanent injuries.

Metro shark mack

Took my brother out for a fish today after having him whinging at me for never taking him. Seen some commotion on the top water south of Rotto while on our way to a mark. So on went a deep diver and within 30 seconds the s-extreme was screaming. After a short fight up comes my bros first mack and biggest fish to date by far.

New Saragosa Sw

Any thoughts on the new Saragosa sw?.,Check it out on Alan Hawks web site.

Trolling speeds

Up at Barn Hill at the moment and yesterday took the dingy out trolling for some macks and was wondering what speeds others like to troll at??? I realize this is all dependent on what lure you are using but as a rule of thumb what speeds do you like??
We were trolling Halco's 190 2+ mtr lures and starting speed of approx 15 kilometers per hour
at this speed we picked up one good mack and I got a PB 108cm Queenie.
But then things went quite for a couple of hours, so on the way home I cranked up the speed to approx 21 kph and bang got another Mackie.. Go figure
At 23 kph the lures would start to skip across the water.
Ps: Forgot the bloody camera (Again) so no photos... :-(

e shed scalies

Time for Exmouth

Heading up to Exmouth on Thursday for a long weekend (whale shark dive on Friday).

Lots of people heading up for the holidays so it seems.

I will be taking two rods and a few metal lures to try and interest something from the shore. Last time I was up there, I am sure that I supported Bluewater while I was there, and even with a boat, I didn’t catch a thing, so fingers crossed that I wake something up this time

Anyone catching any Sailys up near Ktown?

We've got a guest coming over from Melbourne for a fishing trip and want to head out wide. The wind doesnt look like letting up so we might end up doing a fair bit of trolling getting out to some spots. The water temps definitely dropped off, especially after all that rain. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting any Sailys? Cheers. Maybe the water can just calm off???

Night fish

Need some advise guys....we are thinking of heading out this afternoon at about 4pm, staying out till about 10pm. Winds look good but the worry is the swell (3-4m)..this is our first night time session so your thoughts would be appreciated

Calcutta 400 drag upgrade

Hi all,
I have just bought a Calcutta 400 from the buy/sell section, and want to upgrade the drag with carbontex. Does anyone know if the Calcutta uses .5mm or 1mm drag washers? Also, is there anywhere in WA I can buy Carbontex sheets from?

Thanks

Drew

Lures + WD40

G'day all,

A mate just mentioned he heard soaking your lures in WD40 can potentially act as a fish attractant because it is rumoured to be made out of fish oils? Just wondering if anyone has heard the same.

Cheers
