no bait?
Submitted by fisho-ron on Tue, 2010-11-02 20:10well, well, well,,,
on monday, as posted we went for a short jigging session and it was the very first time with no bait on board at all.
i got home today to do the normal, check the boat is dry ready to put the cover on!!!
guess what???
no smell!!! it was a differant experiance i am liking, and it seem to be cleaner than normal as well.
i guess you just dont relise where the bait gets into.
not sure about giving the bait up for good when the ban comes off, but in the meantime i will have a nice smelling boat for the overnighters at rotto.
cheers ron

Sand / School Whiting
Submitted by Juneka on Tue, 2010-11-02 16:50Hi Guys,
Took a girlfriend out for a quick haul of whiting on Sunday - they really are a good size at the moment - got our bag limit in no time, after rejecting anything under about 22cm...
The biggest one I got was 27cm, and weighed 152 gms. I haven't seen them that big out there (behind Garden Island) - what sizes have you been catching?
This bucket full was really worth the effort of filleting!
Cheers,
Judy

New reel for jigging
Submitted by sammy85 on Mon, 2010-11-01 23:08I am looking at buying my first spin reel for jigging and the occasional bottom bouncing. I have been looking at the daiwa saltist 6500 and the okuma Salina 2 16000. Just wondering if anyone has any info about these reels for those purposes. I want to spend around $300 and open to suggestions about any other reels in that price range that can do the job as good or better than the above 2.
Cheers

cockburn shark encounter
Submitted by boogsy on Mon, 2010-11-01 18:45sooooo,,, sunday morning me and a mate launched my 5 metre centre console at woodys point. the easterly was up so we mucked around catching squid and kg whiting.
once the wind dropped we started motoring toward the northside of garden island at about 20 knots when i spotted a BIG shadow on my bow side just in time to swerve left to miss it sending my mate to the deck! i backed off the gas , turned around to see a 3 metre+ shark cruising on the surface in 17 metres of water on sandy bottom heading in the direction of garden island about 1 km off.
the shark (which in my opinion was a white) then cruised in my prop wash while i was in idle about 3 meters off the back of my boat till i knocked it in neutral then it came up my port side, kicked back around to my bow side, then with 1 last death stare started heading to the depths... was easily 1 of the most unreal situations ive been in especially because perth city was the backdrop to all this...
i got on the vhf to cockburn sea rescue but my call was intercepeted by freo when "shark" was mentioned..they gave me an eta of 9 min after i told them my gps position and were soon there to ask me for a bit of info and to clear swimmers out of the bays on the northside of the island..the chopper arrived about 5 min later!
sooooo, all you shark loving, eco warriors with pages of pie graphs and stats about bee sting etc,,,why dont you get your flippers on and go and find out what big bruce thinks of your research...chomp chomp chomp

todays jigging
Submitted by fisho-ron on Mon, 2010-11-01 18:43after having to work all weakend on a hot shot run to adelaide and back in my truck,
i decided to have the day off and go for a jig with my boys!!
it was a late start due to the winds, but we got out there for a couple of hours anyway.
here is a couple of pics with my eldest boy (troy) getting smoked by what looked like a big sambo!
only got a climps of color.
drag locked up tight and he was not stopping.
we ended up only getting 1 small amber and 1 sambo about 8-10kg(all returned), but this hook-up smoked the young fella like you wouldnt belive, lost 250mtrs of braid within minutes,
at one stage he was getting some line back, but then it seen the boat and that was that.
i was having a good laugh at him until i relised..... i have to replce the braid!!!!
myself again with nothing to show, but good getting out there anyway.
the saltwater charter boat was out there and they seem to get into a couple as well.
cheers ron
p.s... take note of the pink sunnys(poofter) i hung shit on him all day about them!,
i am starting to think hes not my son!!!!!

More Amberjacks
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2010-10-31 21:08Well I got to join JohnF and his son Rob today for a possible barges assault if the conditions allowed, and they did.
We stopped in close while waiting for the wind to ease and tried for a few whiting with rob pulling in a couple nice ones on bait while I showed John how to do it with the plastics and landed my new PB flatty at 62cm. Also managed a few smaller ones, one of which spiked me 5 seperate times in 2 fingers and gave me some pain for the trip out to the barges.
As predicted the wind eased and we met up with Just1MoreCast near rotto and made it out there to find the SW charter roaming around with a few familiar faces on it. The hope for anything big soon disapeared after the first few small ambers came aboard so the PE2-3 gear was used all day. They were harder to entice today but we still managed 15 or so Amberjacks between us, with Johns son, Rob, landing his first jigged fish and showing us how it's done! Didn't find and of those bigger sambos that the SW charter got though.
All in all it was another great day out, Thanks John! Bring on the big sambos!!!

Sambo jigging 31/10/2010
Submitted by Markie on Sun, 2010-10-31 19:50Went out with saltwater charters with my girly for my first proper sambo jigging session today.
A few nice fish were landed very patchy but still a fun day with a few of the fishwrecked crew aboard and others on their own boats (just1morcast, Johnf, goodz and who ever else i missed)
First drop and 3 jigs up, bang it was on for me:). Few more sambos were caught along with some smaller amberjacks. I lost a few decent ones along with my jigs :( At the end of the day we were lucky to spot a school of tuna so i cast out my 100gram jig and caught my first bluey toooona too :) To top it off last fish i caught was a flathead only a few cms bigger than my 100gram jig haha.
All up i had a great day some new species ticked off and new personal bests :)

saltiga 4500z line capacity?
Submitted by Johnyy_Boii on Sun, 2010-10-31 13:07just wondering what the line capacity is on the saltiga 4500z?
i was on the daiwa site and it says 300m of pe3, and on all there other 4500 size reels there capacity is 300m of pe4, was wondering if they did a mistake or is it really only that much? I was looking to get one for this sambo season but if they only hold 300m of 30lb i guess id have to look at something else.
if anyone has one, please let me know on how the capacity is.
