Built in fuel tank issue
Submitted by saltyseamen on Mon, 2016-06-06 13:12Hi guys,
I have recently purchased a 2nd hand Westerberg that the previous owners had owned for the last 2-3 years. The previous owners had been using the portable red 20l fuel tanks during this time. The boat has an built-in fuel tank that i'm looking to get working again but hoping to not have to actually get under the deck and take it out. I had asked them why they had not been using it, but they had just found that the red tanks where easier and did not specify that there was a problem with it. The built-in tank is half-full of fuel still so there is no issue with it leaking, however, i am worried that there could be water, dirt, crap etc. in it from sitting for so long.
Ideally, I want to try and drain the fuel to start using again and I am wondering where to start and what the best plan of attack would be?
Cheers for any advice

if a giant animal / monster was eating people on land
Submitted by beachsoul on Mon, 2016-06-06 05:38If a giant animal / monster was eating people on land
Say running up and tearing people to shreds as they walked along the footpath we would use all of resources to hunt it down and kill it.............even though that place is not our natural environment .
Who gave us ownership of anywhere on land. Its just that we have been using it for a fair while ( Right )
We wouldn't say we are in their habitat or in their domain.

Costa Rica Tuna & Sailfish Trip Photos & Video
Submitted by K_willo on Sun, 2016-06-05 15:23Costa Rica Trip Report
Earlier this year I stumbled across a few videos on the internet showcasing the quality of Costa Ricas offshore fishery. Blinded by reports of 30 Sails a day and without considering work/logistics/season I booked a plane ticket. After researching heavily I decided to fish with Quepos Fish Adventures (who I actually found out posts on here) and booked in a day inshore and two days offshore. I had high hopes for inshore, I was super keen to see a Rooster Fish and possibly a Cubera Snapper but alas it was not to be. We slow trolled live baits around all day and my softies and stickbaits were completely ignored. A couple of Jack Crevalle (trevally) were the only fish landed for the day with two missed strikes on possible roosters. Still the scenery was amazing and its always good to be out on the water.
Leading up to the days offshore I’d heard that while the Sailfish numbers had begun to taper off as the season ended there was Yellowfin Tuna around in numbers if you could find the schools. Offshore was absolutely unreal! After cruising 25 miles straight out we got the call over the radio for the first school of spinner dolphins with tuna below. Having limited room in my luggage for lures I’d leaned heavily towards large Japanese stickbaits and after tying on a large Ocea anticipation was high. We motored through the dolphins towards the jumping Tuna, I put multiple casts right along the edge of the action…… nothing..barely an follow. I could see Yellowfin Tuna swimming and jumping clean out the water up to 50kg and I couldn’t get a strike. Absolutely deflated in both my choice of gear and my skills of an angler I started switching up the lures and the retrieve. The tuna wanted it fast and ideally sub surface, after half a dozen lures I ended up on the trusty Halco twisty. Action! I’d matched the hatch, strikes came thick and fast and woah boy was it fun. I was using a 4500 Saltiga with PE4 matched to my allrounder cast/jig rod Daiwa Hiramasa 63S and it was perfect, fish up to around 18kg on the first day gave a great account of themselves but I still had the power to limit painful circling at the boat. We managed to sneak in a Sailfish around 40kg trolling in the afternoon but for me it was all about the Yellowfin.
We got onto an even better school the next day and the action was just as hectic, I decimated my lure box of anything that worked, mostly pencil thin stickbaits with very little action and finished off with white 7” Zman Jerkbaits. The scene is ridiculous out there, hundreds of spinner dolphins jumping, flipping and spinning out of the water, birds diving on bust ups, free jumping Tuna all on glassed out conditions with no land in sight. Most boats were trolling the outskirts of the school with the deckys handing the rod over after hookup, We nosed straight through the dolphins to the front of the school where I could cast and fight fish straight off the bow. While never managing to hook onto one of the larger models, having 25kg fish engulfing stickbaits while jumping clear out of the water is not something I’ll forget easily. I managed to film quite a few of the strikes and captures on the Gopro and will compile the footage very shortly. Heres a short clip from the first day (the water droplet ruined most of the days footage) showing the twisty getting smashed and how fun these fish are on PE4.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pgq3qVCDQ6E
While we never got the Sailfish action I'd see in movies the Tuna definitely made up for it with close to 25 all caught on cast and retrieve lures. Captain John and Mikey were awesome to fish with, very knowledegable, worked hard, happy to persist even when I was unsuccessful early on and most importantly super stoked on the fishing.
While I've now ticked off Costa Rica, I just want to head back to Central America and fish Mexico and chase the huge Yellowfin in Panama!
Full video will be up soon.
cheers,

Cmap
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2016-06-05 10:32I had a play with a GPS unit yesterday that only takes Cmap and I'm not sure if I'm not used to it or if I don't like it compared to Navionics.
I'd love to get a Furuno GPS to transfer my marks from the sounder to the GPS while trolling.
Has anyone used both a lot and can lrovide a revuew on Cmap or has anyone gone to Cmap and regretted it?

Jurien bay info required
Submitted by abbo_05 on Sun, 2016-06-05 07:52Hi lads
Heading up to Jurien bay 15th-18th June from Perth, with my new (to me) 20ft pacemaker. I haven't had much time on the water with the boat so was going to try gain as much info before I make to trip up with it.
Not asking for your GPS location, just some general tips to help land some half decent fish (hopefully my first dhufish) and to stay safe in area!
Also there is a high chance I'll be heading out solo most of the time, so if any one on here is in town your more than welcome to join me.
Hopefully the weather gods are kind to me!!

NEW Abrolhos Tackle Softplastics
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Sat, 2016-06-04 13:21We recently stocked up with these NEW Abrolhos Tackle softplastics thinking they would last a month or so. Well that didn't happen and they lasted less than a week and the pegs very empty.
We have just received another big order of these popular sellers and lets hope they last a bit longer on the shelves. These softplastics are made from the very stretchy & durable elazytech type material.
Absolutely deadly on dhufish, pink snapper, coral trout and well any fish that swims. Due to the very stretchy & durable material these softplastics are ideal for heading north also where teethy critters are an issue.

Shark tragedy.....what are the soloutions
Submitted by beachsoul on Sat, 2016-06-04 10:17Ok so tragically another lover of the sea has died doing what they loved. Absoloutely terrible.
Im sure that anyone who was there will be profoundly affected by what they saw forever
RIP Ben
The cull or not to cull saga will be back and forth forever and nothing will change....but besides killing the
sharks or staying out of their environment, what are some possible measures to protect surfers and divers.
I think that given that the locations where we like to surf and dive are often rugged and remote a device that
is worn on the body is the obvious way to go....I know of the Shark Sheild...But for surfing they are ungainly
and not popular.....I have never seen a surfer with one. Are they the best we can do?
Their must be something..... We can put a man on the moon, probe our ocean depths yet whenever we enter fringes of our
seas we still risk being eaten like our primitive ancestors.
So does anyone have any brilliant soloutions........Go nuts ...go practical....Just GO!!!
Remember that surfers are not always in crystal clear water and are often in silhouette. So any visual deterant will not be partiularly effective.
I thought percussion could be a possability, but that would need to be louder than the lip of a breaking wave....if it was to be the volume alone
that was the deterring factor.......
Anyhow....I hope a few of you have a go. Brainstorm it!!!
Please if you are just going to make negative remarks....save your energy for something that makes you happy.
I already know that not every problem in life has a perfect answer..............

Busselton jetty
Submitted by Ethan A on Fri, 2016-06-03 19:15Hi guys
In the next days l plan to head down to the busselton jetty hoping to catch a mulloway or a pinkie.
l know how busy it is in close so l plan to head out further on the jetty to about 300.
I have a few questions what rigs do you guys use for snapper off the jetty, should l be bringing bait or is there enough bait hanging around the jetty to catch, l plan to bring a few handlines with 70pd line and rod and reel with 25 or 30 pd line is that to light. Final question is has there been a lot of captures or is it still to early in the season.
Thanks in advance

A few mates and i are heading up to Ningaloo station(Janes bay) and coral bay during July. Is there anybody that has been up there recently that can give a quick rundown on the landbased fishing going on around up there. I've fished ningaloo a few times and have a bit of an idea but I have not been to coral bay for years.
Cheers,

Shore Catch Post 2 - Fish Processing
Submitted by Shore Catch on Thu, 2016-06-02 19:47The last while has seen the fish processing side of our new business starting to develop in earnest. The “packaged bulk bait for trips away to user specification” is seeming to be a popular product and it is nice to be able to offer the service. I have met a number of FW Members through the process and it has been a good experience.
It has been interesting times dealing with the regulations around fish processing, particularly the shredding of frames. The general rule is that recreationally caught fish cannot be used where the product is used for a commercial purpose (you can’t sell, trade, barter, etc any product from a recreationally caught species) and I completely agree with this. All the fish shred that we produce has to be commercially obtained from licenced fishermen or fish processors and this is fine, and required.
There is clearly a demand for people to use our shredder to process their recreationally caught frames. The way I read this is that we would be providing a “service” rather than “using a recreationally caught fish in a commercial product” (you would have to take your shred and we could not buy or exchange it). I have sought a ruling on whether we can charge for the service which we should receive shortly.
We have had an enquiry from a Member for processing a lot of frames this Saturday. We haven’t been opening on Saturday yet but every time I am at work on a Saturday, people come and want to buy things. We will open this Saturday (8.30am – 3pm) and will be happy to shred Members frames (let me know if you want to participate if possible). We have quite a few products to make on the day so there will be a bit of activity going on and you are welcome to come down. 65 Buckingham Drive Wangara.
You may have noticed that a few of our products are being stocked by a very limited number of retail outlets. We are just seeking to evaluate the required products and processes to wholesale our goods. There seems to be reasonable acceptance but I guess time will tell as to whether we distribute to a wider area. I do rate the products, via quite a bit of testing, and encourage you to give them a try.
I really appreciate the continued support of FW Members and look forward to meeting more of you in time. Mick

Electric Reels WHICH ONE?
Submitted by CC106 on Thu, 2016-06-02 18:56Hi
Starting to look into deep drop fishing and would love some help on selecting an electric reel to get started. Looking to fish up to 300mtrs chasing hapuka, blue eye etc.
Looking at the Daiwa Tanacom 1000 vs Daiwa Tanacom Bull 1000
Anyone have experience with these reels? Pros cons for both? Is there a better option out there for getting started?
Any help would be welcomed!

difference between hdi and hds charts?
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2016-06-02 18:12Up grading sounder and gps in the new boat and I was wondering if it was worth spending the extra $$$ to get the hds? Are the charts any better on the hds compared to the hdi? I will be using the unit as a combo until I get a furuno sounder... the Lowrance will then become a dedicated gps/plotter... boat currently has a Garmin 551s (know nothing about these units)
