Shore Catch Post 3 - Product Development Feedback Requested

I think it is fair to say that if we didn’t have support from a lot of FW Members we wouldn’t be posting a story like this.  We can’t thank everyone enough for your advice, and encouragement along the way.

We are still slowly developing our full range of products and continuing to refine the strategy for Shore Catch.  From the start we have never intended to be a standard tackle shop, rather provide some specialist products and services that people want using the Fisheries permits and town planning approvals that we have.  The investment in equipment has allowed us to manufacture and pack a number of different fish based products and we are now looking closely at what products we are going to produce.  We will closely examine wholesale distribution of a number of our fish based products throughout tackle shops in the Perth Metropolitan Area in the very near future.

One side of the business that has been popular is the bulk packaged bait to order service for trips away (as mentioned in a previous post, and just contact us if you would like to use this service).  This week I had the opportunity to come up with a mixed bait package for a Member’s trip North (thanks Nathan for the kind gesture on pick up, it was really appreciated).  The idea was to produce a 2kg  “real mixed bag”.  In the end we vacuum sealed in a bone bag, Shark Bay squid, mullet fillet, bonito fillet, scalies and mulies - as shown below.

I have had other people ask about this type of bait product so it was good to test it, and deliver what a customer requested in a bulk order.  I like the idea of the mixed baits but I would really value Members opinion about what baits in what ratios they would like to see us make for retail sale in local shops.  The above pack is a start but I am sure there are plenty of good ideas out there.  I believe a 1kg inshore pack (squid tentacles, squid tube, prawns, blue bait and small mulies/scalies) also has some merit.  Your opinions would be appreciated.

One product that has proven its popularity is the shredded mulies.  We have provided it wholesale to a couple of tackle shops and had multiple orders in a relatively short time.  I have tested its raw properties on a number of occasions and it is one of the most effective fish attractors I have come across (a few recent stories by Mick C about the inshore pinkies demonstrate its worth – and the ones I haven’t written about the action in casting unweighted baits to schools of feeding fish in the burly trail).  It is probably time to expand distribution, and I have been making and testing what may be a desired product as shown below.

This is 5kg of “pure” mulie shred in a slurry so it will freeze down.  We have varied mulie content and determined the best ratio, but the last test will be to change the freezing point to make it melt slower (currently about 75 minutes and target is 90-120 minutes).  We will make those up this weekend, trial them next week and then start to commercially manufacture the week after if there is a positive reaction.

The questions we really have for Members are:

  • Do you think you would buy products like these, and what variations would appeal?
  • If so, what you would consider to be a fair price point for the “2kg Mixed Offshore Bait Pack” and the “5kg Mulie Shred Burley Block”?

We are starting to accumulate quite a few more products that people have been requesting and will publish about these as our showroom display gets closer to finalisation.  We are not finished yet, but it has been good to have the doors open and to meet many Members.  All of the feedback has been invaluable through the continuing set-up phase, and we have commenced work on our catalogue and final showroom design.

Still no word from Fisheries about “shredder for hire charge” so if you have some frames that you would like to shred, and retain the shred, for free please bring them down tomorrow morning.  We will open the shop from 8am on Saturday 25 June, and it won’t be long until we review our hours and open every Saturday morning.

Thanks again for your support and I look forward to any comments.  Mick

Montes questions

What is generally accepted as the best (and closest) anchorage at the Montes for smaller boats, or does it depend a lot on where you leave from? In addition what sort of mileage would you have to do from the anchorage to give yourself a reasonable "taste" of the place? Ta, John

WA fishery wins world reputation - Mandurah Blue swimmer crabs

My 2 cents worth.... It's great that Peel-Harvey blue swimmer crab fishery has been recognised like this but more has to be done to combat the pilfering turds that constantly take undesized crabs and more than their bag limit.. Fisheries have made some significant arrests this year but I wonder how many don't get caught...

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/wa/a/31905856/wa-fishery-wins-world-reputation/

WA’s most popular recreational fishery is attracting international attention after achieving a blue-chip rating for sustainability.

The Peel-Harvey blue swimmer crab fishery will net a world-first today when it becomes the first recognised by the Marine Stewardship Council as sustainable for shared use by recreational fishers and commercial operators.

The region’s commercial sea mullet fishery also got a tick of approval from the international not-for-profit organisation formed to help protect global fish stocks.

Mandurah Licensed Fishermen’s Association president Damien Bell, a long-time crab fisher, said the certification was a triumph for recreational and commercial interests.

“We have been providing WA with some of the best, most sustainable seafood for many years and we wouldn’t be here today if we weren’t sustainable in our practices,” he said.

“I’m proud that the fishery has been recognised by an independent third party as sustainable.”

Boat selling forms

Just a quick question in selling a boat.

I had a look on the Departments website and as far as I can see the buyer and I need to complete 2 forms.
One for the boat – boat transfer form and
One for the trailer – Notification of Change of Ownership (Vehicle Licence Transfer Form).
Is my understanding correct?
When I try to phone them the phone just rings.

Cheers in advance

all done

 thanks

Mindarie Snapper

Hey Guys, I am heading out for a fish tomorrow arvo for the first time in what feels like forever, planning on heading out from Mindarie and trying my luck amongst the inshore reefs, thinking of anchoring up and throwing out some berley to bring some fishies in? Has anyone has success doing this? I usually head out deep so this will be a new experience for me

Albany / Denmark

Hi, heading down to Albany / Denmark this weekend with a mate to visit some of his rellys - just wondering whats the go at the minute for species to chase, and some easy access spots ? We were planning on just throwing out mulies for Salmon and Tailor on surf rigs and whiting / herring fishing while we wait. Probably fish a range of beach spots between the two towns including Cosy Corner and Emu Point, however spots with BBQ's etc are what we are after really. Cheers !

Buying Braid online

 Gday there,

Can anyone recommend a brand of braid to buy in a bulk spool and also where to buy it online?

Live fibre venom pe 2-5 or the 3-8 pe

Which rod suits better? The Live fibre venom over head 2-5pe or the 3-8pe. Using for bottom bashing anywhere between 20 - 80m on dhus, snapper and all that stuff. Putting  fin nor marquesa Ma12 on it. Want to be able to drop half decent weight (16oz)  but still be lightish. Is the 2-5 pe ballsy enough ? No where in bluddy Perth have these rods in stock so can't go have a feel of them :/

Garmin Sounders

Anyone had a play with the Garmin 7400 series sounders.

Mainly with the ability to pick up small half metre ledges in 30 - 40 m

Does the downview and planoptix features work?

Or do I stick with buying a Furuno 588?

Big Lagoon Query

Heading up to Denham to stay for a week at the end of July and probably taking a small Dinghy with me

I was looking at Big Lagoon and it says you can launch a small tinny there but had some questions

It says you can't fish north of the camp site so it looks like you're limited to that narrowish area which leads to the ocean mouth with a deep channel in the middle

If you fish in there can you drop in the deep channel for anything decent (ie Cod or Black/Pink Snapper etc) or do people usually venture out of the ocean mouth from there to do their fishing?

I've looked at Gregories and Bottle Bay which look great but being a very small tinny the sheltered area is probably better to start with ;)

Marine rescue app

I was just watching reel action fishing show and they were advertising a marine rescue app that u can fill out all your details on and from what i can see log in and off using it.

Im guessing as per alot of things there is alot more funding for things on the east coast but why not get it for the west coast aswell as i recon you would probably double the amount of people logging in/out if using it.

Has anybody else seen it or used it?

boat storage options - what are you paying and where?

looking at buying a 18-20 foot centre console which will primarily be used for annual Exmouth trip and occasional use metro, I cant keep it at my house and am looking for storage options.
Just seeing what others are paying and where?
Boat storage yards seem to be around 250 per month... starts to add up if you are not using the boat a lot!

any feed back appreciated!
cheers

Spot messenger and or Rescue me Plb

I Usually fish a fair way offshore (approx 50km) and have all the required safety gear such as life jackets, radio, flares, epirb and I also have a life cell that I leave on the back deck while driving and log on with sea rescue

The latest incidents off our coast have made me more cautious so I've purchased a rescue me Plb to wear on my belt at all times when offshore but obviously you have to be conscious to activate it but it will be used if the boat ever sinks quickly and I'm not able to retrieve the epirb that is mounted to the boat

I'm thinking of getting a spot messenger and was wondering if anyone else uses one while boating or has any reasons why it would not be suited

For people that don't know what a spot messenger is it's basically a device that you can use like an epirb but also set it to automatically send a text message or email etc at previously planned intervals so you can set it to send a text to your wife every half hour with your location that way if you did hit a whale or sea container etc and didn't have a chance to activate the epirb then they would know your location to look for you

Any feedback on the spot messenger or Plb would be great and sorry if this is in the wrong forum

Thanks

Current state of Yardie Creek crossing

Anyone have any firm info on whether the creek crossing is useable at any state of the tide at the moment? Could have changed in the last few days due to a bit of rain. I hate going the long way into Exmouth for stores and fuel...

Off to Ningaloo

Off for the annual pilgimage early am Saturday, for a whole month. Prep all done, now to pack. Having a son with a new Hilux will take aboout 400kg off my load--he can take the fuel, firewood, some water, and all his own crap   A large Madfish bag from Oceanside  has replaced the big icebox, taking a hundred-odd kilo of ice and box off the boat, we are going to keep swapping out frozen containers from the camp freezer to keep the retained catch cold.  320 w solar array to pour the power in to the dual camp batteries, and a big charger for the cloudy days. Rain is clearing Friday ( glad I'm not there at the moment), moon is waning, all the stars line up.

I made noises about keeping people updated last year, but I was too busy.(mainly catching fish) The crew drive me like a dog. Maybe this year....

looking forward to this...

winter in Kalbarri

 Hey guys,

Was wondering what Kalbarri is like this time of year ?? I am wanting to plan a week away in a couple of weeks.  I have fished Kalbarri during summer but have never fished anywhere along that coast during winter.

A heads up on what the weather normally does and what i can expect to catch and also if i should even bother fishing there would be greatly appreciated. I will be landbased fishing only

Thanks for any help,

Nathan

Are our boats as safe as we think they are

I offer my sincere sympathy to those who have lost their loved ones recently in boating accidents.

I think in light of the known tragedies that have recently occurred we (boat fishos) must ask our self, is my boat as safe as I think it is.

From what I have read both on here and in the printed media the two men who sadly have lost their lives at Coral bay where both experienced boat fishos and the boat from pictures I have seen appeared to be fairly new and in sound condition.

It has been stated on this site that the boat put out to sea via the south passage at Coral Bay on a day that can at best be described as not ideal for going out beyond the reef via south passage, in fact 2 boats are reported to have turned back because of the conditions of the sea in that area. This is not meant to imply that these fishos where foolish, but clearly some thing has gone seriously and very quickly wrong.

Case 1
To the best of my knowledge the boat has not been found nor has any wreckage of the boat its self been found. I find it puzzling that the boat has not been found because I think we all assume that in a worst case scenario our boats will float either upside down or right side up due to the factory installed floatation material placed under the floor.
As I have said, to my knowledge no trace of the boat has been found as yet despite the large amount of resources used to try and find the men and their boat.
A logical assumption IMO is that the boat has sunk, which is quite surprising. I have assumed that the under floor flotation material is present is sufficient volume to ensure the hull will float even if filled with water.
This assumption appears, at least to me to be wrong dangerously wrong. From memory the waters inside the reef at Coral Bay are quite shallow and I believe that if the hull of the boat was washed to the inside of the reef it would become very easy to spot.
If on the other hand it has been washed outside the reef it gets deep quite quick and may not be found. There has been no EPIRB signal received from the boat, nor has there been any emergency radio signal or sighting of flares.
If the boat was afloat in any attitude the crew (if not incapacitated) could possibly have recovered some sort of emergency device and used it to signal their plight.
None of this happened to my knowledge.

Case 2

A fisho appears to be lost after going fishing in his boat of Mindarie. An extensive search by boats and aircraft has failed to find any trace of the man or his boat, again from reading about the fisho and pictures of his boat show that the man was well skilled in small boat handling and his boat appeared to be in good sea going condition and of sufficient size to handle the prevailing sea state with his skill.
The boat is reported to contain all the required safety equipment EPIRB, flares, life jackets and radio.
None of this equipment appears to have been activated/used.
Again one can assume with some degree of surety that whatever happened, happened very suddenly without any fore warning or insufficient time to avoid the situation.
There has been no sighting of the fisho (so it is reasonable to assume he had no life jacket on) nor any sighting of pieces of boat wreckage. An esky lid has been found which is consistent with the type of esky carried on the boat.
It is reasonable to assume that the boat has sunk, and again if the fisho was not incapacitated at the time of the emergency there has been no chance of getting safety gear out of the boat even if it was floating upside down.

I have a quinine 600 sea sport and I was appalled at the scant bits of polystyrene under the floor when I lifted it to check just how much flotation material was there. I have since added 5 large inflatable rubber rollers and fitted large chunks of foam in all the places I can fit it as well as placing foam under the gunnels in the hope that if it all goes wrong at least the hull will float in some aspect and allow me to cling onto it and get to my safety gear if the boat goes bottom up.

Perhaps it may be time for all of us to ask the question,
if my boat gets swamped will it float and provide me with something to hang onto.
Just a thought.

Fishing buddy. SOR

Spoke to my good mate yesterday afternoon and fishing came up in the conversation and he was complaining that he hasnt been able to go out because he couldnt find anyone to go with.

I told him to make an account on here but he probably wont get around to it.

He usually fishes on the weekend and sometimes on a weeknight if hes up to it. He has got a 4.8metre boat fibreglass with 60 hp honda 4 stroke.

Just mostly fishing out of fremantle and night fishing is his favourite.

I would always go with him but living in broome now.

Species we would usually catch/ target squid herring snapper sharks gummy and dusky whaler snook skippy kgs

If you are interested pm and i will be the middle man.

Obviously split cost for parking ticket, fuel and help with launch and retrieve.

Regards JM

Deep drop advice - questions

What's up Fishwrecked......

Got a few deep dropping questions; no it's not what kind of ground etc etc....

Picking up the new leccies from complete tonight or tomoz! Can't wait!

1) currents, is their a website or any way to see the speed of current out there ? Or is the only way to actively head out?

2) rigs, 2 or 3 hook paternoster ?? Hook sizes ? Leader size ?

3) type of bait and size? What's everyone's choices of bait? Fresh or frozen? Size of bait, for example at the Kings when the bait boys fished for bass , they were using half or whole skip jacks tunas?

4) I assume most people ish the rotto trench? But I can only guess there deep dropping south and north all up the coast? Rather explore where less boats go, as I have been having serious trouble with being pinged even mid week of two rocks these days! Plus rotto is only for myself a drinking piss day!

5) finally the weather, I assume it can't pretty fly pretty quickly out there .... Preferred winds? Any  kind of wind I really need to keep mins of? I assume any borthwrlies?

any other info would be great gents!!

Which craypot tipper???

Buying a craypot tipper tomorrow and ive noticed theres a few different designs out there. Ive seen some tippers that have small rollers in the middle which look like they centre the rope and then ive seen alot of them with the large stainless steel rollers which look like they can also be locked when the pots onboard. Having never used one before im after advice as to which is best? Does anyone find the tippers with the larger rollers difficult to keep the pot centred when its coming out the water?

Where did you get your tippers from?

Warning Warning Warning Will Robinson

I have just read this bit of nasty news on the ABC fishing page today it appears to me that if labor win the election they are going to re introduce the plan for a large number of fish reserves around the entire Australian coast line. It will be remembered that the Abbot government put this plan on hold until an independent study had been completed and its findings considered.

This now does not seem to be the case with the Shorten opposition appearing to be feeding the greens with the idea of perhaps gaining their preferences. Well that's my view of it.

With both major political parties swarmy bulldust talking and promises it is IMO no wonder that people have had enough of all the rubbish and double dealing going on, the outcome of the double disillusion could see more independents elected into office as the public use their vote as a protest vote against both parties they see as not good enough to govern without a checking mechanism being in place.

Any way have a read and make up your own minds,

LABOR THREATENS LOCKOUTS WITH COMMONWEALTH MARINE RESERVES

From Fishing World e-News 9 June 2016

Labor has promised to reinstall plans for a Commonwealth Marine Park if it wins power in July’s election. In a statement released today, the opposition said a Shorten Labor Government will restore its original management plans in order to “protect our precious marine life”.

The Coalition Government under Tony Abbott stalled plans for the controversial Commonwealth Marine Park after taking office in 2013, pending a review. Labor said its network of marine parks will help protect Australia's diverse marine environment and the life it supports.

While Labor said the Marine Park management plans were designed to have minimal impact on industry and recreational fishing, the Shorten Labor Government has committed to a $100 million Fisheries Adjustment Package to “assist those fishers impacted by the Commonwealth Marine Reserves”.

While Labor has promised compensation for commercial fishers, there has been little mention of the potential damage to the rec fishing community.

Hand held spot light for boat

hi guys need some recommendations and experiences with hand held spot lamps for my boat. I do not mind if it is  rechargeable or battery powered. Just need one that is reliable for when I stay out a bit longer on occasions and it gets dark and have to navigate back through markers etc. I had a perfect image water proof rechargable spotlight but that died only after 2 years..will not get another.

Gnaraloo 2016

So it's on in two weeks time, heading up on Sat 2nd July for hopefully 10 glorious days, taking both my sons for the first time and just hope to hell to put them onto some good fish. Let them get a tatse of some savage fishing. Boat serviced thanks to Johnny at North Coast Marine, trailer bearings renewed and all bolts rattled up. Was speaking with Dave from Extreme coolers and he is getting in there the day before us, so will be looking forward to some good banter and a bit of mine's bigger than yours lol.  Any other members going up at the same time? If so give a hoy or drop over for a beer, staying in cabin 6

Montes fuel.

G'day all. Does anyone know if its possible to organise a fuel drop at the Montes via a commercial charter/ transport. I'm a bit reticent to carry too much fuel on deck in drums/ cans etc. I reckon a "44" would about do it. Ta, John
