Tagged Salmon

Ive had no internet for a few weeks due to stuff ups by NBN and a well know

telecommunications company. Any way, back on line now

I caught a few salmon off the beach in Mandurah last month. Great fun on a lure.

One of them had a tag in it. Tag was from NSW which surprised me.

I thought 'bloody hell', surely it hasn't swum that far.

Called NSW fisheries, then filled in a capture form they sent me

Turns out the fish was tagged and released in Mewstones three weeks earlier.

So it hadn't swum very far after all.

Still interesting though, Ive never caught a tagged fish before

Im interested to hear more about who would be tagging fish in WA with NSW tags

The fisheries guy wasnt surprised but id like to hear more about it if any one knows.

Life Cell

 Gday guys,

The recent tragic boating accident in Coral Bay has got me thinking about what would happen if my boat sunk. Being an old centre console, one wave over the bow and it would be sitting on the bottom pretty quick! I have all the correct safety equipment, however it is stored under the console which isn't ideal at all! My VHF is mounted into the console, so that wouldn't be any good in a quick sinking situation either...

I am considering buying a 'Life Cell' to put my flares / EPIRB in, and also considering buying a handheld VHF to go in it.

Does anyone use a Life Cell in their trailer boat, and if so, which size do you have? Form those that do have one, would I also be able to fit my Shark Shield into it??

Thanks heaps

Drew

Coral Bay water depths and distance to get there?

Hello FW crew,

I'm heading up to Coral Bay in a couple of days with the family and boat, I've never been before but I think I've got a rough idea on how it works just reading the FW posts. One question I do have though;

I see a lot of people talking about fishing at different depths outside the reef ie 40m, 60m, 70m and so on.  Roughly how far do you need to travel west to reach these depths?

Lateral thinkers, need your help.

I need to come up with a way to transport 2 90cm helium balloons from spot to spot up at Quobba. Last trip we wasted to many, and I'm not keen on putting the balloon in between me and the passenger again.  I was thinking cargo netting from my tool box to my tray sides, but I wasn't quite sure how to fix it down without drilling any holes(which I don't want to do).

It needs to be a secure but removable way to transport the balloons without them popping and wasting valuable gas. Cheers

Don't these people ever learn sheeesh

Fisheries have struck again..you beauty.

Page 3 this weeks Co0astal Times news, Ann Tu Phung and Kent Trang each made a kind donation to the Fisheries of $500 plus another $8850
after being caught with 177 under size blue manner crabs and paid a further $169 costs each.

Fisheries pulled them up at 8-30pm and had a quick quiz in their car...whoops what have you got there. the smallest of their catch was just 92mm from point to point.
Scumbags.

The fisheries then had an other customer at 11-40pm Maung Thiha had his car looked through, allo allo what have we here,35 blue manner crabs with 28 of them being under size Maung Thinha also made a donation to Fisheries of $500 plus $1400 along with costs of $169

Just when are these plunderers of resources going to learn.

Munng then received a very good tongue lassing (sadly the only type of lashing she give since the birch has become unpopular) from magistrate
Leanne Atkins using the words selfish and greed. (well done Maam)

With all these donations the fisheries Christmas drinkies fund is looking really healthy LOL

2.27kg Lunds Squid - In stock

Just a heads up, this morning we received 2.27kg Lunds Squid.

We've had a few phone calls asking if this is the Lunds USA stuff.

Please be aware that its packaged by Lunds USA but the squid is food grade illex squid from China.

Illex squid is caught in China and USA etc but due to very low numbers in USA at the moment this is why they are packaging China Illex squid.

LUNDS 2.27kg Squid in stock @ Compleat Angler Nedlands

Beach rod suggestions

How's it going

Looking at getting myself a new beachy , needs to be 13ft + and be able to chuck atleast a 6oz sinker and fillet bait , preferably able to chuck larger weights (7oz grapple and big bait ) .

currently fish a Gary Howard "red bluff " su400G , which is a great rod , but wouldn't mind something a bit heavier and longer.

I'm leaning towards the assassin range (beachmasters or evo ) , so if anyone's used them or something similar  , feel free to let me know how they perform .

Cheers

Diver Needed

Hi All

i lost my anchor in 10m of water at the back of Carnac island and wondering if anyone would be able to dive down to save it. Have the spot marked.

if you can help let me know and how much.

Advice-Non Fishing

Im looking to sell my Landcruiser in the immediate future and it seems the old fashioned route of advertising it in the newspaper on the weekend is no longer a viable option. Any suggestions regarding reliable listing sites would be appreciated.

Broome

hey lads heading to broome for the new year and would like to do a charter chasing reef fish and bills. can anyone reccommend a charter up there?

shark tagging study/results

at the risk of annoying peeps by starting another shark thread,

i thought this is too interesting to have it mixed in with other stuff and get lost
meg posted this link in another thread , it regards to the shark tagging info they have so far been able to publish from the last few years of tagging

its a very intersting read if you have time

main conclusion below & it may help explain why the gov has pulled the pin on funding parts of the tagging program

Conclusions
The Shark Monitoring Network project has successfully achieved its dual research and public safety goals. It has significantly improved the level of understanding of the movements of white sharks bronze whalers and tiger sharks in Western Australian waters and developed a new standard for deep-water acoustic receiver management. It has also provided hundreds of near real-time notifications of verified shark hazard events to enable pre-emptive public safety responses. Additionally, social media and interactive web-mapping have provided members of the public with a more reliable basis for understanding the likelihood of white sharks’ presence off some of the State’s most popular beaches. These originally-unanticipated functions have also addressed long-standing community requests for access to the latest scientific information about sharks’ local behaviour and movements.
The acoustic telemetry approaches evaluated in this study have clear limitations in identifying shark hazards, as do all other currently-available monitoring methods. The SMN VR4G receiver network has, however, realised detection rates that are at least equivalent to other surveillance methods employed in WA with the added benefits of 24h year-round operation and immediate verification of sharks’ species and sizes. Positive identification of shark hazards allows greater certainty in determining appropriate public safety responses and eliminates the risk of responding to false alarms.
Data collected during this study have revealed patterns in the occurrence and movements of white sharks that can inform public safety authorities and Government decision-makers about how encounter risks vary over time and by location. Given the results show that white sharks exhibit rapid, extensive and generally uncoordinated movements around the Western Australian coast, sharks’ movement ecology remains a significant impediment to accurately predicting when, where and why people might encounter this species. Although white sharks tend to be highly mobile and transient through waters that are usually too far offshore to pose a significant risk to most water users, at times, some may come close to shore for periods of a few hours to a few weeks and, in some cases, even for a few months. As these patterns are not consistent among years it is unlikely that a greater period of data collection will generate an overall predictive model. The continued use of tagged sharks as ‘proxies’ for determining wider risk levels may prove to be a valuable component of the WA Government’s overall shark hazard mitigation program.

suzuki df60a backing plate

Need to put a nylon backing plate behind my suzuki df60a (picked up a quintrex 490 bowrider and it doesn't have one) I noticed it doesn't have much trim to point the nose down. Has anyone used a backing plate say 20mm at the top tapering down to 10mm to help trim the motor inward?

My 5 Cents

My thoughts, and ideas on recent shark attacks

The usual pages and news items debating the merits of shark culls, drum lines, tagging to make the water safer for the end user who has been the victim of most recent attacks, that is divers and surfers.
Well I propose that as with most safety issues relating to public health and safety that a mandatory preventative measure be put in place.
Now if you own a car there are numerous safety products installed in the vehicle, making driving safer and crash survive ab...ility higher. Governments have made it mandatory(law) to wear seatbelts, this is for our own safety, some people still choose not to. That is their risk and a fine or demerit points are deterrents.
If you ride a bicycle wearing helmets are mandatory, and some older generations remember when this wasn't the case. The effectiveness of a helmet to prevent sever head injury can be debated but still it's law.
Boat users have to add considerable costs to their activity as mandated by law, an EPIRB, a marine radio, flares and life jackets. These devices have saved many lives.
I propose that governments as in the cases stated above mandate end users of high risk water activities, ie surfing and diving have attached and in use a shark shield device.
Now the debate on their effectiveness can go on and on, but making the end user responsible for their own safety and hopefully preventing serous injury or death has again as stated above been the norm.
There is no guarantee that reducing shark numbers will prevent an attack. Who's to say which shark will attack where.
These devices do work. And will save lives, along with safety measure such as tagging and shark patrols. It may just be the difference for a surfer or diver to get out of the water upon sighting a threat, then the beach is closed, the shark threat determined and further action taken as requiredLike to know your thoughts

Navionics on tablets

Hi guys,
just wondering if anyone can give me advise.
I want to load the navionis APP onto a Samsung Tablet that I do not use anymore. Hoping to use on the boat for navigation, while leaving my Lowrance set on bottom scan, sort of like running 2 full screen. Hopefully wont have to buy a second hand GPS unit if I can use the tablet
My question is this, if I download the App onto the Tablet, do I have to have a sim card installed to enable the Navionics APP to work on the tablet ??

Yeah, I might sound dumb, but I don't know how else to get the question answered

Broome, East Kimberley via the Gibb River Road

Hey guys, heading North next month to tick off the Gibb and have a look around the East Kimberley. Been keen to do this trip for a while and finally a windows opened up with the July uni break for me and 2 mates to head up there. Will be taking a troopy and tinny. Fishing will probably play second fiddle to exploring and 4wding but we'd love to get into some good fish while up there. Obviously target species involve Barra, Jacks, Salmon, Trevally etc

Plan is to hightail to Karratha in the first week of July and meet up with some other mates at 40 mile for a few nights. From there we'll head to Broome for a couple of days. Hoping to put the tinny in for a fish in Broome and also have a look at Beagle Bay and Cape Leveque. Will then head to Derby and begin the Gibb River Road. Half way along the Gibb planning on taking the Kalumburu turnoff and heading up to Drysdale and the Kalumburu community. Will need a permit up here but seems pretty straight forward to get. Back on the Gibb and we'll make our way to Wyndham and Kununurra. Not the best time of year but hopefully some Ord River barra will play the game. After this will get onto the Great Northern Hway and head back towards Broome Via Halls Creek and Fitzroy. Will have a look around Fitzroy and the surrounding gorges for a couple of nights. Eventually make it back to Broome and begin the trip back to Perth. Eyeing off a Karajini stopoff on the way back to round off the trip.

We've given ourselves 4 and a half weeks up there so we can set up some solid camps and have a good look around.

Going to be school holidays so will be interesting to see how busy the Gibb gets and how the condition of the road holds up. We reckon we're pretty prepared for the drive in terms of fuel, spares, bearings etc but less sure about the fishing and camping along the way. If you've done the Gibb before any advice on campsites you've stayed at or some solid fishing options would be great.

Any other advice on places you'd reccomend, essentials we might not have thought of, good ramps, avoiding crocs etc would also be much appreciated.

Cheers

Drain plug / bung LED lights

I've been thinking about LED undwater lighting for the back of my boat and someone mentioned these to me. Anyone using them or are they a bad idea.. I have to say I'm not sure about messing with bungs but they do seem easy to install and some I have seen put out some serious light.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Blue-9W-6LED-Underwater-Boat-Drain-Plug-Light-With-Connector-For-Fishing-/391371859577

I've done the site search but there is only a couple of mentions on these bung type lights. Your thoughts?

cheers

Rick Mazza on sharks

I recently returned from my annual trip up north and was totally at my witts end with the shark problem up there. I speared an email to Rick Mazza out of frustration which is completely not like me.

Anyway long story short he actually rang me today and I had a very interesting conversation with him. He is very switched on and is across the issues we are facing as regular fishers and water users.

He said he gave an interview today on ABC radio 720 which will air at 6pm tonight. Definately tuning in to have a listen. Im no fan of politicians but I think we should pay close attention to what he has to say as he is very knowledgable and appears to have a very common sense approach.

Two Rocks - check your trailer

just a warning and I am not going to go into details... Had a very minor run in with the 2nd  (we were the first, stilll pitch black) boat at two rocks mid week early morning. thought nothing of it, and to be frank i have no idea if it was even them....just odd it all happened in the same day....

Came home that arvy, to check over the trailer before jumping in the cruiser......

safety pin no wher eto be seen ,

2 x chain with shackles and 1 x wired shackle break away unclipped from the car...

both my tie downs (i normally leave ont he rear o the trailer cause ther enot too common here, one obviously cut in half the other gone.......

and  what shits me most.... after pulling the saftey pin out , they release the safety on the tow hitch.

Under no means am i accusing the lads we had a few words with over nothing.......so if your on this site, im not accusing you , its just odd. There is every chance it was a different group just having "Fun

coul of been a disaster for the insurance companym and more importantly my boat!

Gnaraloo, Ningaloo or Warroora Station

I want to take the family camping up north for a week at the end of July or start of August and can't decide between Gnaraloo, Ningaloo Station or Warroora Station. It is mainly a family camping holiday, so a nice site and good swimming for the kids is the most important thing, but it would be nice to get a few fish. I have a Genesis 520 runabout that I am thinking about towing up as well.

So which station is best for

-nice camp site

-nice swimming beach

-reasonable track in for towing the boat

-easy to launch a boat

-good fish within an hours transit of the camp

I camped at Gnaraloo about 10 years ago, before buying the boat, and it was a great spot. I think the launch would be quite easy, and there's certainly plenty of fish there, but the track is horrible and its expensive ($20-30 per person, per night to camp).

I have also camped at Ningaloo station, again before I bought the boat. I think it was north Lefroy I camped at, but it could have been South Lefroy. Also a great spot, but a bit further from Perth, and I think it would be more difficult to launch the boat (at least where we camped it would have been). The track in was better than the Gnaraloo track, and shorrter, and its cheaper to camp than at Gnaraloo.

I have never camped at Warroora, but it seems pretty similar to Ningaloo.

So what would people recommend? Where is the fishing better? Which station has the easiest track in, and the easist beach launch? Are there any other camping spots I should be looking at?

I have used the search function and read all the previous reports from these stations, but I am after a direct comparison and up to date information, which I can't find when searching.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Yamaha year of manufacture

 Hey guys,

Anyone who has any idea about Yamaha outboards i'm trying to figure out what year my outboard is. So many different website say different things. I've attached a photo of the serial number plate.
