Sydney charter recommendations
Submitted by Meeuwissen on Sun, 2016-07-24 10:38Going to sydney for work and might get a bit of free time for some fishing. I've been to sydney once and all I wanted to do was catch a yellowtail kingfish but now I've been seeing some of these bluefin coming out of Pacific. Anyone know any good charters or local sites

Lowance hdi or hds for dedicated gps
Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2016-07-23 09:47Is it worth spending the extra money for the hds? Or anyone using the hdi more than happy with its features... will only be used for a gps and getting a furuno for a sounder. Just not sure how much more detail you get with the hdi in regards to the gps side? Will be hds7 or hdi7

Ningaloo 2016
Submitted by ranmar850 on Fri, 2016-07-22 21:00 Just back from the annual trip. The whole northwest has beenplagued by shitty weather this year, and we copped it as well. We arrived 24th June, and a regular who had been there since Anzac day said he's had maybe 6 good days in that time? Another had been there since May, and not caught a single mackeral. Shit weather, no fish , and not even any squid? So we put the boat in, went out looking for the unobtainable squid, and caught 16. The weather would look to be improving, then go crap again, rain, wind, or just wind. Sails we very thin--we actually didn't boat one for the whole trip, which was a first. Mackeral were hard to come by, there were a few wahoo, sharks were at least as bad as usual. We caught some good fish, but had to work hard for them. Best mackerel was released alongside, (well into the 20's ), best wahoo maybe 15kg. We had one red-hot session on big Spangleds, hard to remember one better--must have tallied 30 big fish to 67cm, released all but one, fell to floating baits. Jigging was a non-event, hooked a couple of mackerel on one set of lumps but the sharks got both. Got pretty good at catching gar off the beach.
Oh, and the Marlin, shown in another post.
But it's always a good trip, and you make the best of it, enjoy the good days when they come.

Mid life crisis
Submitted by Ricko19 on Fri, 2016-07-22 19:58Hey crew
Well my divorce is nearly finalised and yep , I've hit middle age, so I thought f*ck it I'm going to spoil myself with a boat, don't want ali only glass, looking at the Haines hunter 6.80 patriot, never been in one but reviews are good (except that punter who had a bad review , looks like he got a lemon) , has anyone been in one? How do they compare to the new hunter 6.75 offshore? Looking at hard top with minimum 250 hp, second hand , couple of years old.

First Marlin
Submitted by ranmar850 on Fri, 2016-07-22 19:53 Just back from a month at Ningaloo. The weather was pretty ordinary this year, and the fishing wasn't flash, with a few highlights, but I'll cover that in another post. Towards the end of the stay, we were plagued with fresh Nor-easters. Forecast one morning promised a reasonable morning with the wind getting up very strong before lunch, so I pushed the crew ( wife) to be going early--plan was to troll south with the wind in hope of picking up a sail. So north in bit on close out of the wind, then set the two gar, skirt and teaser out with the wind behind us. For a change, i asked her to drive, while I spotted, and, for the first time in the trip, put the Gopro on the headmount. Wind was freshening quickly, with the downwind gar being blown over the teaser, so I replaced it with a Halco bibless. Good strike on that about ten minutes later, which luckily went under the pattern and headed to sea at a great rate. CXleared the deck very quickly and chased it out recovering line. Run was fast , but straight, and deep, and I picked it as a big tuna. remembered I had the gopro on my head, and turned it on about ten minutes in. Not long after the line started angling up--I made the joke-" be funny if it jumped" meaning I would have a sail on, and a fair size black marlin broke the surface! Shit suddenly got real.
it dived again, and fought deep --ten minutes later I had it close, and got a couple of half jumps, right alongside before it powered off again. Got it close again and it dived around the leg--a quick free spool and motor lift saw it free, and then back into it. The last ten minutes, about 35 minutes in, were agony--The wind was stengthening, I was cramping, and the fish was coming in 20mm at a time. Finally got the leader on the reel, handed the rod over, and grabbbed a bill. Simple unhook with the big singles, swim it for as far as i could physically manage, and watched it swim off. Video stopped at 41.38, meaning it was about 50 minutes all up.My initial estimate of 100kg would be pretty close--the 'long" length was 3100-3200, which would translate, according to the tables, to a short length of 2400-2500, which makes it a good 100kg? Anyone with experience in this, please feel free to comment.
Gear was my all-rounder, the bottom-bouncer, bait floater, mackerel and sail troller Shimano T-Curve 200 deep jig with a Tyrnos 12 loaded with 50lb Fins, 80lb Jinkai and a Balco bibless minnow in the stripey(purple) pattern. Thge pain was transferred to me via a cheap old plastic gimbal bucket, no kidney harness

can anyone recommend some one to do some steel work ?
We got a boat at the East Freo jetty. I need to install a step ladder and hand rail to make it easy for the kids to get on the boat.
the mechanism would be like a flip out step to get nearer to the boat.
thanks in advance

What a crab
Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2016-07-21 17:36We have all seen some good size photos of "blueies" posted up in various reports on this site. How would you like to get your 10 limit of these from the Swan.
Catching them from a depth of 800 metres might be a bit off putting unless you have a good winch.
Page 47 of todays West Australian has a photo of what is truly a King Crab.
I would li9ke to see them grab and sort these like they do i9n "Deadliest Catch", one of those nippers hanging onto your thumb or hand would certainly wake you up.
I have no idea of what sort of pot they use to catch these but it would want to be a damn good strong one I should think.

Occy basics
Submitted by Ninety Mile on Thu, 2016-07-21 11:26Hi All
I'm just doing a bit of prep for the forthcoming cray season getting pots ready etc even tho its a while off. I was thinking that if i'm to go to the effort of pulling pots each morning I may as well give the Occy's a go too. Just looking for some tips, do you generally drop Occy Pots in the same area as cray pots, or are there some other features you might look for?
I usually drop Cray Pots in behind 3 mile off Ocean Reef.
Appreciate any help on this including prefered baits!
Cheers
Jarrod

Urgent please help
Submitted by MelWilson on Tue, 2016-07-19 19:53Hi I'm hoping you may be able to assist me. My husband Rohan Wilson disappeared fishing off Mindarie on the 15th June. The only debris recovered was a piece of his esky. This has been forensically examined and the police are keen to locate a matching esky to do a comparison. I recall Rohan buying this esky new at a marketplace...I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) it was Canningvale Markets. This was years ago however. The only information I have about the esky is that it had the initials "PM" on the side. Google has turned up nothing. I'm hoping any of your followers may have the same one or know the contact details for the supplier? It was a stall selling loads of eskys, all new. I've attached a photo which shows the lettering on the side. Please message me if you can help at all Thanks

The Fluorocarbon Myth
Submitted by Alan James on Tue, 2016-07-19 11:23I found this on another forum and thought some may find it interesting. I am sure there are pros and cons with respect to using fluorocarbon leaders and traces and these may vary depending upon the style of fishing you are doing.

Kalbarri. Little swell update / fishing update
Submitted by Bryce Day on Tue, 2016-07-19 08:10after the storm/rain Kalbarri is starting to turn it on. 1 more sleep and I'll be into it.
Wish i I was out tonight!!!!
Im not that keen on shallow water fishing, but today went pretty well! Went north with nowhere in mind! Left in the dark around 6 kids were spewing by 7. Wind dropped as expected. Got a few small dhueys in close then went looking around the 40m line. Got a couple around the 700 so that was it for dhueys then a couple of red throat and it was time for home. Released a 850 dhue, jigs killed it. Mouth seemed pretty easy, it has markers. We managed in the dark! Though sometimes it's easier
to go when you can't see what's coming!
Kalbarri turned it on again today! Woke up had breakfast with wife, launched boat by 10 home by 1. 2 nice baldys, 3 undersize reds!
Even had a look at fads! But no luck

NEW Jigging Sports Australia (JSA) Jigs have ARRIVED!!!
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Mon, 2016-07-18 13:55The hype is over, the NEW Jigging Sports Australia (JSA) Jigs have ARRIVED!!!
JSA have spent over a year researching and developing them. They are finally up to the high standards that you'd expect from JSA and WOW do they look awesome.
JSA are proud to say that these jigs are designed and manufactured right here in Western Australia. There's no jigs like this on the market and each jig has its own unique colour/Hydrographics so every jig colour/pattern is different.

Furuno FCV 582L advise needed
Submitted by mallesh on Mon, 2016-07-18 09:34G'day Fishos,
Was given a Furuno FCV582L by a good mate. Its in a very good nick and has a 600W tanny.
I already have a Lowrance LCX-104C GPS/Eco sounder combo which I am quiet comfortable using.
Now if I install the FCV582L is it going to make any difference to what I already have or Should I wait and buy a FCV585/FCV588?
Your input on this situation will be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Mallesh

Happy to spend a few bucks on it to get some thing that'll do the job properly, about the $500 mark
Need something fairly long to get a bit of casting distance as I am a short ass :) doesn't worry me if it's a 2 piece
Thanks!

Shopping for a few kilometers worth of leader - check
New fishing shirts - check
Two new Sims Sungaiters (best fishing buff available) - check

Coral Bay
Submitted by black gen on Sat, 2016-07-16 18:37Spent the past two weeks up in the bay.
Second year in a row we have had unfavorable weather however we managed to make it happen
Hit up the goldys in a major way, the largest one went a touch under 7kg and had a few people peering in the box at the tables
Sharks were horrible both behind the reef on the macks and also down south
My last day ended not very well, sliced my finger severed all 3 tendons and most of the nerves, painful quick dash back to Perth thru the night towing the boat straight to hospital and admitted to theatre
the girls at the nurses post were fantastic.
all good fun
finger should be primed and ready for next July
