New AWQ - VHF Lisence
Submitted by Kakkerlak on Thu, 2015-10-01 11:22The new lisence has been released.
Any idea where in Perth I can sit the AWQ VHF lisence exam? I phoned a few sea rescue organisations who either have not heard about the new licence or not aware that it has been released.

Abrolhos - Pelseart Group
Submitted by AHarman on Thu, 2015-10-01 11:03Just back from the maiden trip to the Pelseart Group with the BIL – was worth waiting for good weather! Firstly, a big thanks to Rob H and Paul G for all the information re. anchorages, weather etc – much appreciated guys. Wouldn’t have been as easy a trip without the knowledge gained.
Covered 125nm over three days for 165L fuel (Honda 135HP). Anchored up at the Bity holes both nights. The first evening, we had two other boats accompany us, with the place to ourselves the second evening. What a place. The island is alive. Whales breaching everywhere on the way out. Fishing was great, although hard to land anything of substance, which took line out, due to sharks nabbing them (straightened a few hooks and lost a few rigs). Had to move spots after a couple of drops on each lump once the sharks were in - Don’t want to feed them! However, we still did pretty well landing dhuies, baldies, coral trout etc and coming home with cryovac fillets. The sweetlips were a pest out there! The weather really put it on for us. Trolled wreck point for a couple of hours and hooked one YFT – however dropped it boat-side – devastating to say the least! Cannot wait to get back out there and explore Pelseart further early 2016 (if not Xmas / NY – weather permitting).
Can highly recommend this trip to anyone interested – keen. Just pick your weather and ensure you have sufficient water, fuel etc. and be sure to notify dept. fisheries in Gero.

Boys first Dhu
Submitted by z00m on Thu, 2015-10-01 08:07With a few commitments in the morning yesterday my son James and I didn't get to the ramp until about 12pm but we were both keen to get out for a fish. When we left home the breeze seemed pretty light but getting closer to the coast you could see the trees moving a bit. Organised, we headed out into a lumpy ocean from Hillarys. The breeze was doing better than forecast with the occasional whitecap rolling through. James though had been reading the measuring sticker and was asking about WA Dhufish and after answering his 20 questions he declared that was what he was going to catch.
We anchored up in about 16m of water after seeing a good show on the sounder and even though we were getting tossed around I rigged up an outfit for James and he sent it to the bottom. I hadn't even got my rig out of the rod holder when he claimed he was getting bites. Not long after he said he had a fish on! When I looked over the rod was bent over and leaning on the gunnel and I was sure he was caught on the bottom. I went to try and free the rod and felt some action on the end. He couldn't reel the fish in himself without falling overboard so I lifted while he wound and we worked as a team.
When it breaks the surface he sees his first Dhu and at 53cms although it was legal, I've heard stories of them shrinking so after a couple of pics we sent it back. We got our lines back in the water and not long after James called seasick so we packed up left. He was quite happy with the fact he caught the biggest fish of the day since I only got a wrasse! As soon as we were underway he was fine again so we motored back to the ramp happy.

Demersial ban cockburn sound snapper ban
Submitted by meglodon on Wed, 2015-09-30 21:54This is going to look a bit silly but, can someone please tell me when the demersial fishing ban comes into being and, when does the ban on catching snapper in Cockburn sound come into force.
I've just been looking at the fisheries site and I can't see any reference to either.
If some one could post up a link it would be most appreciated, I hate getting old!

New Sounder/GPS opinions about Simrad
Submitted by Stoinka on Wed, 2015-09-30 20:33Gday Fishwrecked crew,
Well just purchased a 660 Assassin hard top picking it up next week just a little bit happy. Only have to add a Sounder and GPS.
Was just going to get a Furuno sounder and a separate gps. But i am very impressed with the Simrad NSS 12 evo2, blown away by its capability.
I would like to hear from any of you if you have got one.
Look forward to your comments
Kind regards
Stoinka

last efforts b4 the ban. Bring on the roaches.
Submitted by MandurahMatt on Wed, 2015-09-30 20:21Back at work now so my demersal season is over, finished off strong with ladt couple of Snapper dawn raids but. Got the two smaller ones on a solo session out from the cut the other week. After that session my anchor was stuck n had to cut it off.
Bugger now i had to find a dive buddy, wasnt hard went back the following week with some mates who were keen to fire their hooker up b4 the cray season so with them on the long hose n me + 1more on tanks we jumped in right on top of the anchor put a surface marker on it n had a look around, came acoss a couple of small snapper a small dhuie n other usual reef junk, i spotted a decent size blue grouper that took off in a hurry once he new i was eyeing him off.
What really got me exsited though was the number of crays out there & they were all leagle size and up, i know were il be heading when i get home again thats for sure.
So with my anchor back i took the tinny back out the next day with another mate n managed three more decent Snapper for my final session of the season, biggest one went mid 80s. Found some thing ive never seen b4 in its guts too, a sea slug i swear those bloody things eat anything.

Hard learnt $ lesson
Submitted by Family guy on Wed, 2015-09-30 19:49With the weather being perfect today I had to dust the boat off and get it wet. Due to commitments my boat has been mothballed for 6months, so with babysitters organised me and the missus planned a trip to Jurien. Had a week to plan check boat, engine even service all reels thought I had it all covered. Drop the tub in water at 5.30 this morning start motor turn on electrics all seems good, try to turn steering no joy cable is seized. Yay three hour drive home then another two removing cable. So I ask a question after having a boat in hibernation what are the checks that I or others have forgot? Hope every one else had a ripper day

Find out what gear I need to take in 4x4 with me for trip ?
tire inflaters etc etc... phone hell I dont know, Eperb ?? lol
Costs for fishing gear an what gear I need tot ake up there for what species. (not buy the flashy crap cos its "on sale".... again.
Driving upt here knowing if theres anythign I need to be aware of (Road trains) Animals on roads , that sorta thing.
Most of em I can do an have done, bar the cabin till I decide if I am gonna camp or not. Most wild roads I have ever driven on is the Perth CBD Tunnel :D

Good motor mechanic in Craigie vicinity?
Submitted by Poppy on Wed, 2015-09-30 16:56Can anyone recommend a good, but not too expensive, motor vehicle mechanic in the Craigie area? I've been here for two years now and have been using Automasters, because it's literally just around the corner. Although I am happy enough with their work, they do seem a bit on the pricey side. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
And just so I'm not too far off-topic. I went out early this morning from Hillarys. Arrived at the ramp at 5.30 and could not purchase a parking ticket from any of the three machines. Several other fishos had the same problem. I left a note on the dash of the car and displayed my $8 in coins. Thankfully, and credit to the rangers, I didn't receive a ticket. I had a bit of a mixed day. Anchored up on the 3 mile and things were a bit slow. I think all the pinkies must have heard of the carryon down in Cockburn. Finished up with a couple of nice black arse, a few decent skippy and three really nice leather jackets, which will go down well tonight.
Cheers

Looking to share deckie duties
Submitted by Cammo88 on Wed, 2015-09-30 06:33Hey everyone,
After 2 years trolling the forum I thought I'd join! I have tried my luck fishing Cockburn sound, Rottnest island, Hilary's and two rocks since getting my boat. I have however missed out on some pearler days as I did not have a deckie!
I'm sure there are other boat owners here in the same boat, so if anyone's short a deckie for a day or night fish id like to know. Same goes for me if someone wants to jump on mine for a fish that's great!
I live around Scarborough so I generally launch Hilary's or two rocks( preferably when it isn't like it was on Monday!)
Thanks Trent

First jigged dhu
Submitted by azza1 on Tue, 2015-09-29 16:09Headed out yesterday off Rockingham. Started off with a few nice KGS and undersize dhuies and snapper. At the last stop before home had the rod in the holder with bait. Headed up the front of the boat to have a look at the sounder, then the old boy calls out your ON! But before I could get back it was off. Pulled up and the bottom Snell was gone. Decided to drop down a pirate jig to entice her back and bang was straight back on again pulling string, then off again after around 5 secs. Pulled up to see one of the assist hooks straightened. Swapped to a haoli jig. Couple of twitches and on again pulled fair amount string, just hoping it would stay connected. Third time lucky, still had the snelled hooks in its gob. Up popped this girl. Pretty happy for a first on jig.

Found - Inflatable with outboard
Submitted by Belly Fish on Tue, 2015-09-29 12:20Was out around 18nm more or less west of Ocean Reef on Saturday.
Came across a drifting, unmanned inflatable including outboard. No other boats in sight.
It was still there when we came home and figured it was lost from Rotto, or maybe came loose from a boat towing it to Rotto, so I brought it home. Would love the owner to claim it.
If it's you or somone you know, send me a PM with identifying features and it's yours.
Cheers

Caught Yesterday
Submitted by The Saint on Tue, 2015-09-29 11:54Ok, please correct me if I'm wrong, but this looks very much like a gold band snapper.
Caught Sunday in 88 metres out from Rockingham My id book says " tropical species found as far south as Carnarvon".
Have any other members caught these around Perth ? This is the first I have seen here. The missus followed up with a smaller model half an hour later.

Cubing up
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-09-27 18:42Planing on heading out tomorrow to start learning how to find good ground and see if i can't raise up a pinky or at least a few nice skippy on light gear.
I've got some herring my nanna gave me in the freezer so would that work as well as mulies for laying out a trail of cubes and would a fillet of said herring work well to drift in the cube trail? I'm also going to try for some squid on the way out too.

Have your say at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/fishinginWA
Submitted by quadfisher on Sun, 2015-09-27 10:02Have your say at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/fishinginWA
I know another survey, but lets face it , shiney bums, pollys and decision makers in WA are the zen
masters of paper shuffling , and this is the only contact they have with smelly fishermen and women, as well
as the real world , so take the time , put in a comment , send it to a fishing buddy , and you can always win a great prize too.
cheers.
