Hi All. A group of my mates are booked with Northern Conquest ex Townsville on a 7 full days fishing Coral Sea Trip. The trip will cover everything from topwater doggies, bottom fishing, marlin ect. and all gear is supplied. Cost is about $3530 for 7 full days leaving the dock at Townsville on Sat the 28th Nov. First fishing day the next day Sun 29th. We are looking for one more person to fill the numbers. This will be a trip of a lifetime and if you know Northern Conquests reputation you will know what I am on about. The blokes going are top guys If you are interested let me know even if you have a few more questions. Tackle such as lures must be replaced if lost plus you'll have to budget for beer!

Wives and girlfriends if you are reading this- then do the right thing and let them go!

Here's a link to the site and a video report of one trip.

Day 1 crays

Shot out for an arvo dive NOR. Pretty average conditions with heaps of surge. Heaps of jumbos about but the surge made it difficult to get in good position. Monkeys off the back and runs on the board with a nice cuttlefish to top the arvo

Selling rec caught WRL

If I was to carefully cut the meat out of my cray tails glue the centre flap back on and then inject them with formalin....could I legally sell them mounted once they have dried? I was at fisheries today having a chat with the local hot sheiler  renewing my WRL license but forgot to ask her, my mind was elsewhere

Cockburn Power Boat Members

Is there anyone in here that may be able to nominate me for membership if I complete the forms? Was looking at trying to become a member before the open day. Thanks for help

Beatiful Sunset lil Red emp

Been posted years ago but just found it in my album and just love the colours off the little Reds. No need to tell you where it went!

And notice squid jig in background always at the ready night fishing off Dampier.

Custom bait boards

 Hi guys.

Have been looking around for a while now trying to find someone who does custom bait boards in the perth area made of stainless steel or even ally. The only ones I have  come across at a reasonable price were over east.

Wondering if anyone has had any luck finding someone over here.

Cheers.

Deep drop ban...Why?????

Understand the demersal ban for Dhuies, baldies, snapper, breaksea cod and harlies but why for the deep drop fish (grey band etc) that have not had too much amateur fishing pressure?

Be good for the tackle shop economy to not have the ban on deep drop fish and would get more into deep dropping which would take pressure of dhuies, etc, when the ban is lifted.

I am probaly missing something but thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

How far out wide for a runabout?

 Hi guys.

I have a 18.6ft Penguin Huntress runabout with a 120hp johnson, dual batteries, 130L fuel tank with 2 additional 25ltr jerry cans  (180L in total). Boat handles wonderfully, and the motor is quite reliable.  How far out wide would you take a similiar boat out?  I have all the safety equipment; epirb, flares etc.

I am quite confident with my boating skills but the furthest I've been out is around 40mtr deep between 3 mile reef and Direction bank, when I had a Voyager LTD.

Thanks

Boats tipping over

I have heard of a couple of boats going over in the last week. Does anybody know how they went over. Hope they were not leisure cats.

Deep Drop Report

After a couple of years of filtering through old posts on this site and a few PM’s to Ryan to help build our knowledge on this form of fishing I thought I would share some of the results. The most recent was yesterday with the weather looking ok, the Demersal Ban approaching and a brand new jignesis rod from ocean side tackle to try we had to go. A 20kg grey band jumped on the new rod to christen it and the parabolic action did make it easier on the back.

Below sounder shots are on a furuno 587 with a TM260 tranny. In one shot you can see a double header of pinkies coming up off the bottom. Special thanks to Ryan, Reece and Harro for the information from your posts over the years and the questions you openly answer when asked have gone a long way towards helping us get results.

Also thanks to the Furuno and Oceanside team for the deep drop talk the other week it was a very informative night. We still have a long way to go before we hit fish consistently and conquer all the deep drop species but after many trips the “code” is slowly being cracked.

fishing dunsborough area

hi all, heading down Dunsborough area anyone familiar with the area and know of any places that might be worth having a shot?? no 4x4 land based! no specific target species not sure if the old salmon would be around? probably set a big bait then flick a lure/plastics around?? just never fished down that way? any help would be awesome!! cheers

Leschenault eatuary/inlet

 Hey guys,

do the same rules as peel apply towards crabs down there? Regarding open season. If not can anyone point me in the right direction to go for a scoop. I know it might be early but will be down there this weekend and dont wanna sit around

Mobile Phone Antenna's / VHF

Hey guys, lately we have been pushing further and further out to sea, particularly with the deep drop, and can be up to 35nm out.

I am only in a 5.6m boat, and during this off season I want to try and improve my communications out there. ATM I only have 27mhz with a 1.8m aerial.

So the first thing I am going to do is install a VHF radio, most likely with a 2.4m whip.

The second thing is to try and get an external antenna for my phone.

I have found a phone with an antenna port, so I will use that, no cradle required.

Does any one on here run an external phone antenna, and if so, what sort of results are you getting?

What sort of antenna will I need to get phone coverage 35nm out?

Cheers

Dhufish weight?

How much would a 1.2metre dhufish weigh approximately?  I caught one on Monday but don't have any scales.

Trail craft trailer modifications

 G'day,

just wondering if anyone out there has modified their trailcraft trailer to better suit driving their boat onto the trailer? I've got a 6.6 Trailcraft and unless it's dead centre it can be a bit if a bitch to get on straight away, and wondering if I could convert it to skids or modify the rear rollers so I could drive it straight on without having to winch it,Any feedback appreciated, cheers.

GME GX600 VHF radio problem any advice appreciated

Gday i recently installed  a new GME GX600 VHF radio and GME VHF antenna to the boat. I tested it straight away on land (Jindallee) by calling VJ6LQ, the reception was perfect with no interference at all and they said i was coming through 5 out of 5 so i was pretty pleased with myself. Went out of two rocks and tried to call VJ6LQ on the lead line there near the cardinal marker - they could hear me but the reception was shocking - loud loud interference and i could only just make out their reply . Continued out 25km west of two rocks tried to call VJ6LQ - nothing but real loud interference. Any ideas why this would happen?

Sea rescue is busy today

Was down the beach for an hour and saw two boats towed in, then a 15 knot westerly came in, no pinkie session tonight

2nd Deep Drop attempt.

Well we needed to get out for one last fish before the ban & Monday looked the goods. It was going to be the usual hit the 40's off Mandurah and see what comes. But the predictions were looking great, so we decided to stow the big gear for a deep drop. Especially after attending the Oceanside/Sounder night the other week. Doug & I were primed for another go at it.

Got to Mary St. ramp at 5:30am, and hit the water. We cruised out in perfect conditions and the call was made to go deepish. So we made our way out,and came across a bit of ground that looked good in 88m so decided to have a drop. Not long after Doug got a 55cm Pinky, so we at least had a fish in the esky if the deeper stuff failed.

We got out to a spot that looked promising in about 175m to 195m. So definately not Super Deep by any means. But we were picking up fish on the top of the drop off as Ryan had explained on the night. However getting the drift right took a bit getting used to. We were getting bites fairly regularly, and I got a nice Nannygai, but no Cod.

Decided to have a look a little wider out to 230m but didn't find anything worth dropping on, but still did just for the hell of it. So went back to the other area just as the wind really dropped off. Set a drift and Doug was on, fingers were crossed for our first Greyband but it never gave up, right till it was in the net. A big Queen Snapper, it went 80cm and was caught in 190m of water. I didn't know they were out that deep!! Next drift Doug is on again with something even more weighty and with more fight. I decide to leave the my rod in the holder and get the net organised for him and sure enough my rod gets hit. So it's each to their own, mine felt ok but wasn't pulling string as Doug's did. Mine hit the surface just before his and it was a cracker Nannygai (I think, correct me if I'm wrong)-64cm. Doug's ends up being a hefty Amberjack.

So we got our bag, but still missed the Greyband, but feel we done ok. Chucked a couple of skirts out for a couple of miles on the way home and got one Striped Tuna & dropped one.

Beaut day on the water.

Cheers

Chris

Sorry about the sideways photos. Your necks might feel like my arms!!!

Any Transducer Wizards?

I just got a Furuno 627 with P66 and currently have a Humminbird 798 with the transducer mounted. I have a Seafarer V-Sea which has a factory built pod on the back.

Obviously I want the P66 in the prime location as I only want the Humminbird ducer for GPS and side scan. I was going to place it next to the existing ducer but the current one is already just off the swing radius of the prop and the P66 needs to be 75mm away. Not much I can do about the 75mm distance but I'll have to place the P66 where the Humminbird ducer is as the side of the pod directly to the right (starboard) is curved.

I've got two question for all of you versed in the black art of ducer placement. Will the P66 be ok within 75mm of the swing radius of the prop and will the Humminbird ducer be better placed in between the P66 and the keel or should I place it on the port side. I'll only be using the Humminbird side scan at low speeds when bream fishing or chasing tailor etc adjacent to exposed reef.

left the old school today

went out with skipper Al today from two rocks and I thought bugger no bait today, dropped lines at 6am,had on a z man N chicken on a BJ lead head, nice heavy one hit the bottom bango a nice 630mm dhuie [my first on a placcy] which was soon in the ice box, then had a hit which turned out to be a cuttlefish? it went quiet after Al caught a under size dhie so we went out a bit, thought I would try a jig I borrowed off BJ on sunday, hit the bottom and bamgo a nice 700mm dhie my first on a jig and first try for one, the skipper says f... bait but I only got a nice flathead on the jig, we did try for awhile on the 3 mile but very quiet, fantastic day out on a calm ocean, gave the skipper the smaller one and we were both happy, might have one more go for pinkies tomorrow night and that will be that, easy fishing placcys and jigs hey

Replacement Guides

Hi All,

I have a rod with several dodgy guides that need replacing. I would like to replace them all with something better. I've looked online and can find kits that keep the price down for multiple guides, but cannot locate a retailer in Perth that sells them. Does anyone know of one that sells guides in a pack?

Other option is to buy a broken rod from someone and transfer the guides - anyone have a broken rod with decent guides they would unload at a cheap price? My rod is a 9ft lure casting rod, and if replacing guides like for like would need 9 guides including the tip.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,

Daryn

Marine Radio Issue?

 Hi Guys,

My boat is almost ready for Summer now, but I had an issue with the radio that was fitted by the previous owner - it was an old radio, so i decided as it is safety kit to replace it with a new GME unit.

I replaced it yesterday, and have the same issue - It sounds scratchy, has really bad reception and I cannot raise VN6KC from my house in Safety bay???

I managed to raise them on the old radio last weekend, but they advised me to replace the unit as the reception was really scratchy, and they could hardly hear me.., now the same with the new unit?

Does the radio use the water as the groundplane for better reception, or do i have another issue here?

See attached pics of the antenna, mount and connections - all look good to me...?

Tested the cable to see if there was a short or open circuit, and it all tests fine..

Sounds like squelch noise and scratchy, and the engine is not running during the test??

Any advice would be appreciated, or a name of someone around Rocko who could help?

Thanks

Seaboard

Does anyone know where I can get Seaboard or any other high density polyethylene board in Perth? I only need a 200x200mm offcut at best. I need to extend the plate behind my outboard to fit a new transducer

Cheers

boat delivery - not good enough

Bit of a rant here. I recently bought a new boat. it was expensive but its what I wanted for years. Well the delivery wasn't the best. Some things you can live with but others things just burn you up like how the dealers put the boat rego stickers on. Very ordinary to say the least. I did complain so they mailed me out some more of the cheap and nasty variety to install myself.
Well after looking at my boat each day in the driveway and always seeing the crap stickers I ordered some custom ones and did it myself. My point is I shouldn't have had to.
here's the before and after pics.

bit sharky on sat

bloody sharks couldnt get away from them

tyrnos 30

Hi Everyone, havent posted for a while but I am wondering if anyone has a link or information on servicing a Shimano Tyrnos 30. I have done a search and also looked on Youtube but can't find any info.

Life during the ban - What's your new target species?

It could be a long couple of months, too long not to fish - got to wondering what everyone else will be chasing...

Cheers
