Sting rays
Submitted by metrolandbased on Sun, 2012-11-11 21:45Me and my mate headed to the woodman point boat ramp this afternoon for a ray session. after four hours of only a few small runs my mate finally had a promising run. after being taken 150 metres down the concrete jetty we started getting some line back on the fish. after about half an hour we saw some colour and got excited but as soon as we got it up it took off and went straight back down. we are estimating that it was atleast a 40kg+ smooth ray as after 2 and a half hours he was still stuck on the bottom! my mates line snapped so we thought it was all over but as i pulled my line in i realised that i had caught his line and so we tied his line and my line together using an albright and continued the fight but the fish wouldnt move! after nearly 3 hours we cut the line and let the ray go to swim another day. amazing fight but shame we couldnt get it up for some photos :/

Wasted Catch
Submitted by Brock O on Sun, 2012-11-11 12:07
Hi Guys, Didnt want to post this but thought some one might know the lazy and wastefull bastards. Local park in Atwell near our basketball pad. There's plenty of young teens around the area who i think may visit the ASI and Woodies point to fish, I just couldnt see a boat owner leaving this but thats just me!!

Local Spanish Macks
Submitted by Notorious on Sun, 2012-11-11 11:34I have heard rumours of Spanish being caught off Rotto
Any truth to this? would seem the current water temps of 20-21 would likely start producing fish

Daiwa generation black - Swamp donkey - will it suit stradic 5000fj?
Submitted by sstevee on Sun, 2012-11-11 10:42Hi guys,
Bit of a noob question, but my awesome girl got me a new stradic 5000fj for my bday which I've just loaded up with 30lb sunline super PE (took about 220 to 250m). Problem is I don't know what rod to match it with!
i want an outfit that is going to be a somewhat go to outfit, something I can grab and be confident I can cover most bases with, even if its a compromise in certain areas. Basically want something that I can put in the dinghy/boat and use for flicking lures at reefs, trolling for tailor in the swan, the occasional in shore bottom bouncing, and potentially even squiding. Probably a fair bit to ask but hoping to get a rod as versatile as the reel.
The other thing is budjet. While I understand that the more you spend the better I definitely want to keep it under $200, other things are I would like a 1 piece and prefer to stay away from cork grips (not sure about their durability), and would like something to come in at 7' or under (for ease of use on the tinny)
So after my research the one I have in mind is the new daiwa swamp donkey in their generation black series, they seem to get good raps from fishos for being value for money... Only thing is, am I way off the mark?

Thanks in advance

what is really going on down there in the deep water . . .
Submitted by Cruise Control on Sun, 2012-11-11 09:10Hey Guys,
Saw this clip yesterday, a mate showed it to me. I dont know if its been posted on the site before.
Its an 8 minute clip prepared by Dept of Fisheries using "baited" cameras and a blue light to see just what is down in that deep, deep water. Starts off at 100m and goes down to 500m. I was amazed by how barren it looked down there. I dont know what I expected but it wasn't this.

Seriously?!
Submitted by Travis Br on Sat, 2012-11-10 22:09Just seen this on Perth-Now, I do understand people becoming frustrated at the Goverment doing little about the shark problem
were facing Atm. But this is the sorta stuff is just blatantly stupid; the sorta stuff thats gonna lock up our coast to those who are actually, recreationally fish. I mean if
there gonna do it atleast do it behind closed doors :D, dont boast about it at the expense of others and the future.

Fishing the sound
Submitted by Webbwah on Sat, 2012-11-10 20:57Hello new fisher to perth!
Have done some beach fishing around garden island and the moles and have done pretty good with tailor.
Recently purchased a 4.5m so i could explore the sound and get some more species. So far is dissapointing. Buckets of trumpeters and butter fish,
with only 3 KG in about 5 trips out. Been fishing the holes around carnac mainly but also some squiding and fishing around ammo warf?
Anyone got any suggestions, or is the sound just fishing poorly.
Pre perth have fished alot in SA where i was getting 40 kg a day without trying too hard.
If anyone is keen to share some spots it would be majorly appreciated . Can just PM me i dont expect people to post spots online otherwise i wouldn't be asking haha.
Cheers and Beers

Favourite terminal tackle!
Submitted by trav32 on Sat, 2012-11-10 18:13so far ive found most terminal tackle to be of pretty bad quality. hooks are fine (gamakatsu) but as far as swivels go pretty unhappy. Can anyone recommend good quality swivels that last more than a few outings:
Three way,
Crossline,
Swivel//snap swivel,

I'm not takin the boat down, cbf towing it all that way for 5 days while the bans on but wouldn't mind going after a feed of squid if possible.

3B Walking Stick in the West
Submitted by brenz on Thu, 2012-11-08 09:17
After 2 weeks of terrible weather i managed to score an afternoon off work wich looked to be slightly favourable.
The plan was to hit the upper reaches of the Swan River Perth W.A by foot and throw around a few of the berkley 3B lures. Now this time of year in the Swan is usually a bit early to hit it with hard bodied lures, with plastics usually the way to go , but with my favourite lure at the moment being the Berkley 3B walking stick 50 in hooch it was a very easy decision to make to leave it on and go "hard's".
We arrived at the spot at roughly 3pm to find the wind blowing slightly in our faces wich put a smile on my face. First cast 2 winds in and BANG the walking stick got smashed with no hook up, " spewin " i said to my mate Brett when all of a sudden it was on , the reel screemed as this fish went for cover but I managed to wrestle him out of the snags and a respectable 37 cm fork length fish was on the sand, a quick few piks and the fish was swimming away.
From then on in we were managing a fish every few casts and to say these lures were on fire would be an understatement. But it was not all as easy as 1,2,3 as we found that a specific retrieve was to be the deadly undoing of these fish and proved to be the difference from consistent strikes to the odd nudge. The retrieve we have found most effective on the 3B walking sticks is as simple as this. Two quick turns of the handle to get the lure down then slow the pace down so the lure is only just swimming, but here is the trick every 3-4 turns of the handle give the lure 2 quick short twitches in a downwards motion and then pause for 1-2 seconds then start the slow retrieve again, we would usually find that it was these short sharp twitches that would get the bream interested the pause would give them time to "stalk" the lure then the start of the retrieve and they would hit it hard!
We ended up wrapping the day up with a few more nice fish closer to dark. The one suggestion i can give though is carry a few different colours because if they are not hitting one mix it up a bit and try another no matter how silly the colour seems, as depending on many different factors be it water clarity, food source etc they will be eating different things .

Looking for suggestions for a rod to match my penn international 16vsx which is spooled with 65lb braid and a 80lb topshop to be used for game fishing.

paddle crabs, cane toads of the river
Submitted by quadfisher on Wed, 2012-11-07 18:07Not sure if anyones seen this but some imported crabs have been found in the swan river
and by going by the fisheries website they are s---g bricks about it.
And so they should , god knows what effect they could have her, going by the n.z. experience.
If you go crabbing keep your eyes peeled , and maybe print off a picture of them to take with you.

Submitted by SABRE on Wed, 2012-11-07 16:40Was watching I-fish last night and instead of using gimbals they were using what looked like a stubby holder with a beanbag atttched ???. Does any-one know what these are called and where you can get them. Looks a lot less cumbersome than wearing a gimbal all the time ? Sorry for shit description but best way i could think of describing it LOL
