plastic rod help?
Submitted by Webby on Wed, 2012-10-31 08:17Need help guys,
I am looking for a new plastic rod to match up to my 5000 stradic. I heard diawa sol are the goods but I have been told you just cant moraly put a shimano reel on a diawa rod so I would prefer to keep it shimano. Budget is around $250. I have owned one of the old raiders and also the raider plastic but found them a bit stiff. was looking at the Tcurve revolution or the Tcurve T series? stradic has 20lb line on it so looking for an 4-8kg or a 5-10kg at a pinch. open to ideas
Cheers

Useful information on Transducers
Submitted by Cruise Control on Tue, 2012-10-30 17:37In my never ending quest to find information on transducers and which one will best suit me I happened across this link. Not sure if people have seen this but it answered a few of the questions that I have about transducers, how they work and why. It may be of interest to others.

Some more 585 questions.. specific settings this time
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Tue, 2012-10-30 13:54Hi all
have a few more 585 questions for those who have/ had one and know them well and could help out with please... Finally about the put mine on the boat and know that it will take some experimenting with to get things right, but any info/ advice that could help me hit the ground running would be really appreciated...
Basically, Im after some advice on the best settings to do a couple of different things:
1) Normal scouting around in both shallow (10-20m) and medium (50-80m) depths at around 8-12knts while trolling
and
2) Higher speed scouting when moving between spots etc at between 20-30knts (also, it is feasable to expect to pick up schools of/ small pockets of fish when travelling at these speeds with the correct set up in anywhere from 20-80m? I have a Tm260 transom mount tranny)
I have had a search of the archives on here, and found a couple of sets of settings (thanks harro and grayzee) (see below) and I am assuming these are for reading at slower speeds?
Again... thanks for any advice/ info anyone can help with...
Harros:
pic advance - 2/1
zoom mode - bottom lock
shift - set to 5m
interference - auto
color erase - 10%
clutter - 0%
white line - 0%
tvg - medium
tx power - 100%
tx rate - 10
symbols - off
info - off
colors - 16
set depths to - 5m,15m,30m,40m,50,m60,m80,120 (set for me down south)
zoom - 5metres
bottom lock - 3 mtres
background color – blue
Grayzees:
manual gain
auto range while heading out until in the area then shift mode (stays in auto range for sambo's)
pic advance - 1/2 when at sounding speed
bottom lock to 10 meters
a scope on (whats under your transducer currently)
shift - set to 15 meters + (you may miss fish midwater if zoomed too close)
interference - auto
color erase - 10%
clutter - 10%
tvg - medium
tx power - 100%
tx rate - 10
colors - 16
dont use zoom
background color - white

Coral Bay Advice Please
Submitted by Brucesta on Tue, 2012-10-30 10:47Looking to tap into the knowledge from those who have had their boats in Coral Bay before, fish to the north or south? roughly what a typical days journey is for the fuel budget (gotta be better than 80Nm return out here) what wind speed is marginal for getting out between the reefs etc, tide issues, sinker sizes. looking to hit mainly the bottom species but we will have all the pelagic/billfish gear onboard too while we search for ground on day 1.
Thanks in advance guys, we have a week down there this coming saturday, if you're in the neibourhood and spot a blue Cruisecraft 625 Outsider LAS VEGAS, come and say g'day and have a beer with us. we'll be the loud ones at the pub on Melbourne cup day too!

Rotto
Submitted by nicmaddogg on Tue, 2012-10-30 09:18Hi everyone.
Me and a mate have spent a lot off time out at rotto the last 3 months with at least 3 trips out a week. We have been having some great fishing but since the ban has come in, we havent had much luck with stuff we can catch. Because off the ban we have been doing some jigging and trawling. We have had some great days jigging but there are too many sharks down there. We lost 7 lures within an hour jigging and hooking fish then getting busted. Annoying as hell. We spent 4 hours trawling behind rotto but havent had any luck.
Does anyone have any tips for Lures or weather conditions that are ideal to snag some Mackerel or Tuna?? Trawling is the go atm but ive heard that the water needs to be abit warmer before they start reving up?
Also does anyone know what date they tow the FADS out?? Ive heard november but not sure what date??
Thanks

China-Beijing and Swan Flatty
Submitted by Torzar on Mon, 2012-10-29 19:19Hi guys, going to china (Beijing specifically) in about 4 weeks for a school trip. Theres a few shopping sessions on the agenda so naturally i thought i might be able to pick up some fishing gear. We will be shopping at wangfujing street and also at the silk markets although it is more renowned for fakes. Just wondering if anyone had had any experience with these locations... and more importantly is there any fishing shops there ? I havn't been able to find out on the internet anywere. Also does anyone know any quality chinese lure making companies that will be worth looking at.
Also managed to get a few flatty in the swan yesterday, this being the biggest... much bigger to come though :P Sorry for the mobile phone photo quality :)
Cheers ! tight lines :)

Trolling Rod Advice
Submitted by Cameron71 on Mon, 2012-10-29 17:29I am after a trolling rod to match to my old faithfull Penn International 16s.
The Penn runs 15kg Trilene Big game.
I would spend $300-$400.
Any suggestions? I have in the past just put it on something (anything but often an old Sabre that I just sold in my garage sale) and am not really sure of the characteristics of a trolling rod vs a bottom bashing rod.
Cheers

Anyone travelling thru to Coral Bay via Gero could take a package up?
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2012-10-29 11:47hey everyone, just wondering if anyone is heading thru Gero to Coral Bay over the next week or 2 or 3?
I have a package for a mate up there, about 5kg, small electric motor size of shoebox.
I live about a km from 440 roadhouse or could be left there for collection on the way thru.
Freight to CB is just a headf++k, and when its not a headf++k then its a wallet f++k

a few firsts from todays trip...
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Sun, 2012-10-28 22:43Had a pretty goos session today at the usual haunt... got the usual batch of decent demersals, but a couple of things stood out that are pretty rare around here. Firstly, we got the first wahoo on my boat (pic attached) and secondly, something even better...
The weather was a bit average, so we were tucked in close in about 10 meters putting a few baldies in the esky when I big shadow started beelining towards us. Great, I thought, here comes a big tiger, no more fish here for us... on second check, it wasnt....
http:/youtube.com/watch?v=D135ZjNsVcU
this fella hung around the boat for ages. he came right up the back of the boat to begin with, and just hung there for about 2 mins with his head just out of the water like he was looking at us- it was almost as wide as the back of my boat. Then he did a couple of cicles of the boat and took off before coming back again for another 5 mins when I finaly got my act together and pulled out the camera. Wasnt shy at all. the only other time Ive seen them was on the proper exxy touriest trips, where they throw you in and have to swim like hell to keep up with them. This guy was in no hurry at all. Was thinking he must have lost him mum or something, but he would gave gone 6m easy, so wasnt that much of a kid... the footage is a bit dodgy I know, but think you get the idea...
And as a side note, after we lobbed a couple of plastics at the cobia swimming with him, my mate hooked up and landed one of the smaller ones, and he had this on this back... fairly new scar obviously... but it looked very clean for a sharkbite (lucky guy if it was) and made me wonder... I really hope someone didnt mistake it for a shark and decide to do a bit of fin harvesting. He still fought well, didnt seem to be affecting him to much...
Anyway, thought Id share it, it really blew me away. You get a bit jaded when you live a great fishing spot like I do, but this was definately one for the diary

problem
Submitted by jack93 on Sun, 2012-10-28 19:35got a problem (this is a constructive post no negative comments please)
i usually fish with my mates for snapper and mulloway off my local beach kayaking baits out (i kayak out my mates are too pussy or have better common sense than me hahaha) in cockburn sound around 4km away from d9.
Due to the demersal and snapper ban i have decided not to even target mulloway due to the risk of catching snapper and i often target sharks like tigers bulls blacktips bronzies hammers and gummies (all released except gummies and blacktips) off the same beach. Due to not being able to fish for snapper or mulloway etc i have started targeting sharks everytime i have been there ( mainly large bull sharks ). This beach is about 4km away from d9 ( aprox i think) and i kayak out at least 500m. so ill cut to the chase.
I beleive that there is a large possibilty that great white may come through and im scared i might hook one while targeting other sharks (i have seen tiagra 50w with braid spooled and have heard of big sharks being hooked with my pb and 8ft bull). So the question i want to ask is should i not bother targeting sharks because the of hooking a great white is too high ?

Rotto Tuna
Submitted by Noxious on Sun, 2012-10-28 18:21Hi guys
Me and a mate recently bought a boat 21' glass boat.
With the demersal ban on we are pretty keen to catch some fish. Has anyone been doing alright off rotto trolling for tuna as of late? weather permitting we are planning on heading out next weekend (weather looks a bit off at this stage).
Not asking for peoples exact locations just a rough guide.
Cheers lads,
