Fishing Discussion
Crabbing Info.
Submitted by Trueblue3 on Sat, 2012-01-21 13:54G'day All,
Just wondering if there is any do / don'ts of Catching some blue swimmer Crabs in the Swan River, with regards to fisheries giving you a fine.
I understand the size, more so is it illegal to use certain baits in your net??? and the boat limit is 20 yes?
What is the best bait, been using Chicken necks latly...Just thought I would ask the question so I dont get ANOTHER nasty fine from Fisheries.....
Cheers everyone.

Weird holes in sand seen while snorkeling the swan?
Submitted by Dicey on Sat, 2012-01-21 02:23I was snorkeling the lower reaches of the swan and stumbled upon a patch of 6-10 dolphin or shark shaped holes 1.5-2m long probably 30cm deep at the deepest point, unlike stingray holes which are round, was in about 1-1.5m of water and looked pretty fresh, any ideas what could have done it?

Boat Launching Question
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Fri, 2012-01-20 15:52Hi Fishwrecked
Just one question about launching our boat.
When we back the boat in the water and start to undo the winch, the boat flies out of control and slips very quickly off the roller trailer, and you just have to let it run because theres nothing you can do. We tried to fix it by backing the boat further in the water so there is less strain on the winch, which worked a bit but am not that keen in taking the car for a swim. Also tried tying a rope from the boat to the winch post but it got tangled and didnt work.
Most of the time i drive on/ off but when theres a jetty there i plan on using it.
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers SRF

14kg Metro Mackerel Yesterday (19th Jan 2012)
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2012-01-20 14:15With the forecast looking smick I had to go out for a Metro Mackerel sesh!
Trolling Rapala X-Rap 30 in bluesardine & Halco 190XDD green-gold in 25-30m of reefy structure, Black Pete Mirror teaser and many hours of trolling!
Hours into it I got a strike and the ratchet screeming, after two more solid runs I landed the Metro Mackerel that simply made my day. The conditions were awesome and I kept on trolling but no more strikes so I packed it in!
I was solo that day so I went pass my shop to get a picture (Thanks Blake) and get a weight.
Digital scales went just over 14kg ........ Happy Days
14kg Metro Mackerel

Sea Breeze got it So So So So wrong today
Submitted by Andy Mac on Fri, 2012-01-20 10:29Forecast for zephers below 10 knots all day.
Reality - 40 knot gusts and a south easterly that stood up the waves in a very nasty fashion.
On the water by 5 off the water by 8 (we had had enough.)
Still a feed of whiting for breakfast and its a good day to be alive.
Wind was so strong my sea anchor rope snapped!!!.
I hope not too many decided to hit the FADs today - we met several at the boat ramp who had set out and turned back with water going over the gunnels.

ferrules
Submitted by kknlk on Thu, 2012-01-19 18:22Been a little while since needing a ferrule. Was looking for a 14mm one and was quoted $30!! The last one I had to buy was close to 18mm and that was $10. Admittedly that was a long time ago. Gee whizz what are they making them out of now, Gold?? These kind of items are being priced out of the Aussie market as I can get one posted to me from UK for about $12. I'll probably pay less than that next time I go to M'sia. The rod is fibreglass and is only worth sentimental value. I built it for a fraction of the current ferrule price. Looks like I'll have to hang it up as it's not worth fixing.

Exmouth Report
Submitted by cahal.dahm on Thu, 2012-01-19 07:55Hey Guys,
Headed up to exmouth on the 1st of jan for 2 weeks, we had some of the best weather you could ask for while being up there. We did alot of boat fishing aswell as land based fishing, but didnt have much luck landbased. out of the 2 weeks we stayed up there we took the boat out at least every second day, which we thought was really good considering the southerlys that you get this time of the year
first couple of days we just trolled around for mackies while looking for ground, picking up a few mackies but no massive ones. We found a few spots to troll along and bottom bounce and this is when dad got his Grouper, put a really good fight for dad, once we got it to the surface we struggled getting it on board cause it was so heavy, with a few quick photos it was released and swam back to the bottom to fight another day.
The next good day that we had, we headed to a spot that was recommended by a friend that was up there. It was funny cause dad is an old fart and only used bait and he swears by it, while me on the other hand i use mainly plastics and jigs, so it was almost a fish off. In one of the drifts we had we picked up 3 good fish within 10 minutes first one being the red emperor then the ranking and then the spangly
All in all we had a really really good trip and will be heading back next year with out a doubt!

mackie weighted in at 15kg

rough weather

first red, and on plastic get this in 18m and weighed in at 8kg

not sure how much this guy weighed but mabey give us a guess???

first ranking, on plastic

attack of the nor' west blowie
Submitted by fukos on Wed, 2012-01-18 22:53me and a few mates went for a fish/dive this arvo in a bit of stormy weather off a break wall, i got a nice red lipped morwong pretty much straight after i got in, then as i went to give my mates the fish this bastard followed me and wasnt being to friendly(or maybe just too friendly for my liking), anyway it kept swimming straight for my leg so i was whacking this thing away as i was trying to pull the fish of the barbs and it was a bit frantic and it was being a prick so i jumped in and had a go, it gave me a bit of a tow in the water but it was great fun, ugly bastard isn't he!

3500kms of heaven!
Submitted by Oracle on Wed, 2012-01-18 22:20Well lads, where to start.
I guess the heart break started around 8.00am when we were meant to be heading off to Exxy with the boat packed, car ready and the boys all keen. Then the road updates. The fire was settling in and the road closed. Not a biggy as it's only for 24-48 hours. we'll just chill in Carnarvon. Got the last room and off we went! Problem is once your on the road and reading the weather, your mind does funny things - like thinking about going the LONG WAY AROUND! So this is what we did, chucked a left instead of right adn it was on..... All went pretty well outside of a few locals checking out the boat in Meekatharra and a flooded creek just before the Exxy turnoff (that nearly had us in tears after 23 hour of non stop driving). But we got through and off we go!
Only in Australia can you have a roaring bushfire less than 50 kms from flooding creeks! FFS!
Onto Exxy. What can I say - Mint, then mint, followed by, you guessed it, MINT weather! Poor Simon C wasn't able to join us on this trip so we sent him a morning ramp picture each day so he felt like he was with us anyway
But where the true magic was, is in the fact that for the first time, we got to do things like Peak Island as the START of the day, Black Ledge, Flat Island etc and still come home with a truck load of fuel at 30 knots. Hanging off the black of Black Ledge and casting into small gaps and watching the poppers and stick baits die in seconds is something to remember for a long time.
GT's were on the top of the list and HELLOOOO boys, here they are!
are you paying attention to the water at Black Ledge? YEAH!!! But then back to peak.... but what makes the two below even more impressive is the fact they were both caught in less than 5 meters of water on PE 5. Adam - Photo of the month stuff I think! After all, that is Peak Island looking like a bath tub at tide change of the ocean side
Only a face a mother could love, and the fish is a bit rough too.
Even did sort trolling around the front of the island and what do you know, DINNER!
But what do lots of people come to Exxy for? We tried that too. Couple of new species hit the boat. Raised three, got two in the boat. Not bad for newbies I think.
Only got the spread back in the water, just pressed the throttle and then this little crazy critter hit the skirt and bounced off into the horizon like a rabbit. Awesome to see!
Moral of this story... find the weather, get there anyway possible. if I put all my best days fishing Exxy into one week, this still beat it. already trying to find time and a way to squeeze in another trip. Might f cost us and extra couple of hundered $$$ and 10 hours of mind numbing driving, but it was soooo worth it.
Top trip this year

Furuno GP 7000 Owners
Submitted by doublej on Wed, 2012-01-18 21:38Hi all
My gps is killing me.
I posted before about purchasing a PC Planner and transfering spots from my computer to gps.
Anyway whatever happened I apparently made my C-Map card corrupt and lost my card and shut down my gps.
I have purchasedd a new card from Jepperson in Sydney and my gps still can't seem to read it.
So if someone in the local area (Rockingham - Mandurah - GP 7000) has one could I come and plug mine in or test my card on another unit.,
All help apprieciated cause I'm going to Jurien on Monday and would like a working GPS.
Cheers in advance if someone ould help.
