Best Rod Tubes
Submitted by Pezdog on Mon, 2012-01-30 15:15Hi all
Hoping for a bit of direction on a rod tube to take on planes. Heading to Broome again in April and will be taking up 3 rods between 6 - 9 feet. They will be two piece so probably need about a 5 foot tube to be safe.
My question is are there tubes out there for sale that will fit all 6 pieces safely or should I try build my own with PVC pipe etc. I have a cardboard tube that fits one that i used last year but was lucky it arrived in one piece as one of the ends buckled (thinking it got caught on the baggage collection belt) but I really want to take up a few rods so hoping others can recommend a good product or good way to build.
Cheers

Some help on mackie lures
Submitted by Just1morecast on Mon, 2012-01-30 12:16So I've had my jet ski for a little over a month now and I think its time to tackle some spaniards. I'm planning to take a drive a bit further north maybe lancelin or Jurien to try help my chances since I have no sounder as yet. I'm still contemplating whether to run one or two rods but what lures would you guys recommend I buy?
Any help would be good since I'm new to trolling (only caught some tuna when I had my boat).

witch doctor first build
Submitted by meglodon on Sun, 2012-01-29 16:37I've had a go at building a witch doctor with the aim of hopefully attracting a few pelagics this season. Have christened it the Iron Duke as I think I got a bit carried away when building it. I hope I never see another peice of stainless steel for a long time as polishing the bits for this nearly drove me made

daiwa braid
Submitted by silly on Sun, 2012-01-29 16:24Just trying to research some p.e 2 braids to spool up on my certate 3000. I'm quite liking the Daiwa braids at the moment and during my research i've mananged to come across a Daiwa PE 1 braid which has a breaking strain of 30lb.
Its Daiwa tournament 8 accudepth. Has anyone used this stuff? Seems like its very thin for a high breaking strain, would love to see if anyone has tried using it or has officially tested it.
If not are there any other daiwa braids which are recommended?
cheers

Excellent Weather and Fishing in the SW
Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2012-01-29 09:27Went out yesterday for a fish in some of the best conditions I have seen in a long time. Glass from the time we left to the time we came back to the ramp. Had a mate down from Perth for the weekend and the plan was to show him what the SW has to offer in the way of fishing. As always it didn't disappoint. Bagged out by 10am with a couple of welcome surprises coming up. On the way home I decided to hit a few sambo spots. The guys on board had never jigged sambos before and it was quite a shock for them. The sambos were in a frenzy hitting anything that moved. Great fun watching them experience some red hot sambo jigging. Had one sambo follow a hooked sambo right to the top and when the hooked sambo hit the surface it to came to the surface. It wouldn't leave the hooked sambo alone so I decided to net it for a bit of fun. Once in the net it went nuts. After a bit of a laugh it was released on its way. First fish I had ever caught with just a net.

A few surprises in the 40's today
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2012-01-28 20:35Went out very early today to beat the forescast sea breeze...it did come, just very late, so was a magic day on the water.
Jigged all morning and with great demersal shows, but almost no takers bar an undersized dhu and a few odds and sods. So we hit an area in the 40's where we had been blown away a few weeks ago and yup..........a few bruisers about again.
Pretty well straight away, we had a three way hook-up on PE2, the sound of squeeling drags filling the otherwise still and humid air. After a few minutes I got toasted on PE2, the sambo was just a bit feisty and bricked me, and the other two boys were not looking that good with more line going out than in......
TimVB got his in first, whilst Troy (a jigging newcomer) was having a ball on my young blokes Salty Fighter and Daiwa Tierra 3000 light jig outfit.
Troy got his in, an excellent first up jig effort on light gear, but Troy has done a lot of game fishing so eqited himself well.
We moved to PE3 and knocked over a few more each for a great fun session, then decided to have a troll with some skirts as there was a bit of bait on the sounder. Within 10minutes, strike, and then the fish started jumping like crazy........MAHI MAHI........ Only a little model but my first Metro dolly and within 15 km of Perth. Tim has the photos, will post later.
We continued to troll all the way back to the Marina, and hit 6 striped tuna, that went VERY hard on light gear, landed 4, all released (photos to come). We had two doble headers, one was special where we got a surface strike on shotgun PE2 on one of the skirts which was floating on the surface while we were clearing the other rods after the short PE3 line got hit........the poor Tierra 3000 squeeled in protest, and after several good runs the little reel could not keep up and the tuna spat the hooks. GREAT fun, man do the stripeys go hard.
Anyhow, slow day demeral jigging, saved by some shallow water sambo and Metro troll action.
Thanks to deckies for the day Tim and Troy for a fun day. Daz, bad luck dude on missing out, next time, a little less speed n the WRX STI on the way to the marina!

Whats your biggest fish on light line? 19kg mulloway on 6 lb line
Submitted by anypuddle on Sat, 2012-01-28 19:54About 10 years ago while tailor fishing at Nedlands hooked and landed a 19kg mulloway on 2.7 kg stren 40lb leader 1.5 hour fight. Big shark mackeral on 8lb off the beach at dirk hartog on a bucktail jig, 8kg mekong giant catfish in Cambodia 45 min fight on 8lb, piece of bread for bait using a square cut out of a thong for a float. 100kg shark off the beach in kalbarri. Big spanish mackeral trolling a halco redhead on a handline in a canoe in the Philippines. Catching Dhuies on 80lb is still fun but these fish are some of the standouts for me.
Keep trying i suppose you get lucky sometimes.!!!

Metro Mackerel 27th Jan & a FAD run!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 2012-01-28 15:17Yesterday was looking good for a FAD run and the conditions were far better than what they predictated and it just got better (always a first)
Craig (Fishcrazy) was keen to get amongst the dollys and the Allmarine Services FAD had plenty of them. Sizes were from small to medium and some biggens cruising around. I was using my 8lb spin outfit and using Maria Blue code stickbaits and McArthy 4inch Pink/Pearl SP
I landed (catch & release) many dollys with my biggest over 5kg and on light gear........geez they're fun. Craig caught a few and kept two for the table!
The water clarity was awesome, 26.3 degrees water temp, bugger all wind, fish everywhere and Craig was saying do you see many Marlin harassing the dollys. Yep seen it a few times and 10 mins later fleeing/shit scared packs of dollys. Craig & I said .................."Marlin"...... near the FAD for sure and not long after that a boat trolled past and whamo he's onto a Marlin and it jumped out of the water next to my boat/next to the FAD and threw the hook........awesome to see in the metro!
Despite having a great time at the FADS both of us were keen on a macky troll so we headed in. The water being flat certainly made it a quick trip. With 3 lures in the water, Craig hooked up pretty quickly to a stripey tuna......... gear out again and an hour into it I said to Craig "can you tell the mackerel to bite the bloody lure"...........fair dinkum.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz my ratchet screemed and it was decent!
After a very fast first run and a second the fish got closer to my boat where Craig did a good gaff job. This was a solid metro mackerel indeed and the Halco 190XDD green/gold did the damage. After a good pic (thanks Craig) we kept on trolling and it wasnt long and whamo my other outfit goes off this time it was Craig on strike. We cleared the lines and after a short fight the mackerel spat the Rapala X-Rap 30 pilchard...........gear out again and after another hour or so it was all over so we headed in (lazy 38knots)
Yesterday was one of the best days fishing for me as everything was perfect and good to catch up again Craig ![]()
