Big schools off Hillarys south wall... mullet?
Submitted by Snags on Thu, 2012-02-09 17:06So I went for a fish Tuesday arvo and made the trek to the end of the south wall.
On many occassions there was schools of either big mullet (or tailor or herring??) swimming up and down the inside (facing back towards the beach) rock wall, at times they would even swim in a circle, creating a 'ball'. Sometimes just swimming at a leisurely pace, other times chasing the small bait fish. They were hugging close to the rock wall.
These schools were at least 5 meters across. We threw twisties, plastics and unweighted mullies into, on top of, infront of, through, behind, underneath, every direction possible, and they were NOT INTERESTED! I'm telling myself that they're big schools of mullet, but can someone confirm?
These were decent sized fish too! Looked to the naked eye about 40cm+
Anyone else seen/caught them, i just want to know what they are?
Cheers,
Alex.

Not fishing related, but it is about to be footy season
Submitted by randall df223 on Wed, 2012-02-08 22:41This is the last week without football. Personally, I have purple blood and am excited about the coming season. I wish for nothing more than a radio on the boat and perfect fishing weather every second weekend so I can listen to the dockers play the away games while I relax and wet a line at the same time.
Interested to know who everyone else supports and how passionate you all are. doesn't need to be aussie rules, could be league or union or netball. what clour blood runs thru your veins and how proud are you that it does?
Me, I am very proud to be a dockers member (and perhaps, just a little bit crazy!)
Let's see if we can get through this post with only positve coments and no lock out!
Complete the following:
My team will win the flag because.....
Freo will when the flag this year because we have recruuited one of the best coaches in the business, we have a promising list with a great mix of experience, quality players and youthful exhurberance. the players will have a higher work ethic and will strive for perfection. In conjuction with the Eagles, Subiaco will again become a house of pain for visiting teams and both WA clubs will enjoy success on the road. My wish for 2012, is to catch a BIG dhuie, and a Derby Grand Final, Dockers vs the Eagles, Dockers to win by a point (perhaps in a replay, just t o make the Vics sit through two weeks of WA teams playing in a Grand Final!)
BRING IT ON!

Friends of Ammo Jetty
Submitted by mickisaway on Wed, 2012-02-08 20:54Hi all
A small group of us divers and now a growing group of anglers have started a Facebook Group - Friends of Ammo Jetty. This is an offshoot from a page I started called Stop Killing Ammo Jetty Sharks and Rays. At first the concern stemmed from some sharks and rays that had been caught and killed and just dumped off the jetty. This had over recent times become more and more prevelant. The sharks had not been taken for food or any other means, just stabbed through the head (in the case of the Tiger recently) and dumped. This is not fishing but senseless killing, that does go with maiming of other marine life in the area I/we thought it was time to make a stand of sorts.
Anyway we did get some feedback from anglers (and I learnt some new words) and whilst some was rather negative and misguided it became clear that there was and is more at hand. It needs to be stressed at no stage are we or will we ever be anti fishing. In fact from the discussions I have managed to have some of the considerations in our Aims and Proposal will help fishing and the overall environment.
At this stage we are just a Facebook page and are working to move forward to see what steps are involved to move to Not For Profit. I am in contact with Recfishwest to gain further advise off the peak angling body before we look to Cockburn Council and other departments. The concept being if we can get a community group together with a clear defined set of Aims we can work as one singular voice to get better facilities at Ammo Jetty and its environment.
Below is a set of draft Aims and Proposals that have been posted on the page for feedback and also sent to Recfishwest. It would be greatly appreciated if you wish to provide comment you either do so here or even better join the Facebook group Friends of Ammo Jetty.
As I mentioned we are not anti fishing or tree hugging vegans but concerened members of the public who is seeing Ammo Jetty become degraded in both its marine but social environments. And well we have to try.
Thanks in advance
Mick Lee
Friends of Ammo Jetty
Aim
To work as a community to build a safe, sustainable environment within the Ammo Jetty locale for all members of the public to use and enjoy.
Working Towards
1. Take a forward approach to establish Friends of Ammo Jetty as a legitimate community group through formal registration (charity etc)
2. Developing a catch and release culture for all sharks and rays caught at Ammo Jetty. (Note this does not entail a mandatory requirement but the development of a culture)
3. Improving diver awareness through better diving skills such as buoyancy skills and situational awareness.
4. Implement a harm reduction culture (that is to stop the senseless mutilation of unwanted catch) and release for all by-catch
5. A sustainable and healthy marine and ecological environment.
6. Working towards a no litter practise
7. Reducing the amount of vandalism, car break-ins and theft.
8. Building a family friendly community based culture allowing all to enjoy
How will this be achieved?
1. Working as a community group we will lobby relevant parties and government agencies to assist us in achieving these goals. This will involve forming a formal committee representing all parties with a common goal of working together.
2. Developing a proposal for a grant(s) from Recfishwest to assist in better education campaigns (this to include fundraising also)
· Formal education via online medium
· Schools program through science classes studying Cockburn Sound environment
· Fishing clinics run by ‘celebrity’ anglers
· Consideration for a landing platform to limit the need for gaffing and injuring marine life
· Research the possibility for a Fish Attraction Device (FAD) or artificial reef off Ammo Jetty to reduce the need for chumming or burley being added to the waters and attract more marine life to the area.
3. Work with Cockburn City Council to ensure greater public safety measures and introduced.
· Establishment of a Volunteer Ranger or ‘Ammo Watch’ program to spread the message, educate and if required report on misbehaviour.
· Establish a safer car park for all members of the public through more regular and visible patrols, better lighting and installation of CCTV cameras.
· More rubbish bins provided on the Jetty with signage and educating members of the public why rubbish should be disposed of properly.
· Construct fit for purpose fish cleaning stations at Ammo Jetty and anglers to clean and fillet their catch reducing the need to kill and clean fish on the jetty and dispose of off the jetty.
4. Linking with universities, scientific and environmental groups to help spread the message for the need for a cleaner Ammo Jetty.

Where's the love
Submitted by fisherking on Wed, 2012-02-08 18:20Seems lately that a whole heap of haters have joined Fishwrecked.
Bitching & fighting about old injuries, sounding a guy out because he wants to sell his ute.
Whats wrong with everyone??
Fishing is supposed to be a relaxing alternative to the realities of life.
Maybe it's time we all chilled out & started ' feeling the love' again.

Submitted by BigV on Wed, 2012-02-08 18:10Hey guys, I've just moved to Geraldton and will be staying up here for about 6 months and am looking for some fishing mates. I've got my own boat, fishing gear, 4wd so i'm not asking to sponge off anyone just some likeminded company would be great. I enjoy all types of fishing and am keen to explore the area and get my first mulloway. Offshore i'm looking at getting into the mackies and try and learn the art of fishing with artificials. If anyone is interested in having a fish then please PM me or give us a call on 0403257814.

Targa bar and conopy.
Submitted by Fraser 5.25 on Wed, 2012-02-08 15:33I have a Fraser 5.25 run about and I will be looking at upgrading the bimini at some time soon. I have used the search function on the side and found that a lot of people are praising Just Covers in Balcatta but I was looking at somewhere south of the river as I live in Kwinana and would rather shop local if I can. I want to get a Targa bar fabricated too as I am sick of putting rods on the floor in transit to my fishing spots. Does anyone have any preferred people they have used south of the river for the fabricating of a targa bar and making a new bimini? If I have to travel up to Balcatta, then I suppose I will but I'm not sure if they do the targa bars based on other's posts about Just Covers.
Cheers,
Ken

Rotto fishing rigs/advice
Submitted by langerz on Wed, 2012-02-08 10:55Hi Everyone,
Going fishing out on my mates boat early Friday morning, around rotto most likely. Wanted to find out what sort of rig would be a good all rounder to use out there, I have always just used those pre-made snapper rigs from BCF.
Got a short boat rod/good reel with 50lb braid so should be no problems there, I just wanted to find out whether I should be fishing bottom/mid/top? What species am I chasing? Anything I just would like to catch something haha!
Also for berley I’m using pigs feed (full of meat meal/fish meal/wheat etc), scraps and chopped up pig’s feet. Does the mix sound like a winner??!
Any advice on rigs/locations around rotto would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Langerz

looking at buying a new boat atm... have found a place in henderson called Oceanic Fabrication. They build a custom 7.5m hard top ALI based on a bill plug design. Went out for a sea trial and seemed really good..
Just want to know if anyone knows anything about their boats or know someone who has one.

Old farts club
Submitted by randall df223 on Tue, 2012-02-07 21:36I've noticed references to "old farts club" or just "old fart" on many posts on these forums. What qualifies one as an old fart? Age? If so how old is an old fart? Or length of time as a member? Or years of fishing experience?
I suspect I qualify under the first category, but definitely not the last two!

Cape Nat Bottom Bouncing
Submitted by timboon on Tue, 2012-02-07 20:20FW crew,
As its the best time of year down south I hope to get the Dingi out a few times and get some goodness back in the freezer after a bit of a drought...
Usually I fish nth of Gracetown and dont like to venture to many miles as I'm only in the 4.2 quinni Dory.
Living in Busso now tho so I might have to have a sniff around Cape Nat... If you were to give a bloke some advice within a 5 mile radius of the Cape, Which direction/depth would you think best to try and bounce some Jigs & or bottom bounce at the moment??
Cheers all,
Timboon...
