Fishing Discussion
New bru
Submitted by theperthvan on Fri, 2010-12-24 07:22Hi,
I started fishing the other week. I go to Hillarys and fish off the southern limestone pier area. It's really fun and I do it most days, although I've never caught anything except heaps of blowies and something else that I don't know yet.
I use a rod I found in the shed but it seems pretty good and does what it needs to, though it doesn't cast too far. I used a massive sinker and it casts further now, but it kept getting snagged so am back to a lighter one.
There are a fair few questions I have, but I'll only start with a couple.
What is the point of a swivel? My rig is really primitive as far as I can tell...it's just a sinker on the end, and the hook about 10cm up the line. Is this going to work for catching good fish (my fishing aim is, apart from having fun, to catch a meal)?
Does the line need to be really tight? The wire on my rod has gone pretty curly like a helix, so when I cast out, it's not too tight. Does the sinker need to be heavier or do I need new fishing wire?
Cheers and cool forum

todays adventure
Submitted by hekser on Thu, 2010-12-23 17:27hi all, time to report back on this weeks boating excursion...
i didnt take the boat out last weekend coz i had had enough of the constant problems, but this week went off without a hitch.
got to the ramp- leeuwin(mate sprang for parking) flat water perfect launch, started first time (i had warmed her up on the muffs at home, bet my neighbous were happy 6am this morning) and off we went
didnt really see any chop even leaving the harbour. was a nice flat ride. headed to carnac to try get some liveys.. a few wrasse later i decided to bugger off to rotto to fill the tank with sandwhiting, went to pull in the squid jig on a hand line i had drifting and pow, i had one.. decided to stick around for a bit longer, no more takers.. that squid was the only decent thing i caught all day... :L
headed to this bommie south of west end.. 29 metres where the rest in 40. couldnt find it.. few other boats fishign the area, stayed a bit away from them- didnt want them to think i was pinging them.. sounded around for awhile, didnt find much.. found 31 metres so fished there, sounder showed a squigly bottom.. :S wrasse wrasse them wierd yellow and black n white zebra fish looking things and some other things look liek a cod or something? big mouth.. black ugly lookign things... any ideas what they are? im sure they would taste good when they were big :P .. mate was insistant we go join the bobbing flotilla of boats off the west end.. more wrasse and other reef fish.. mate got over it- we went to rotto, went to the pub, went for a swim, went home.. all in all a fail day. but a good day... im getting sick of not actually catching fish, its a bit disheartening... my mate rekns theres no fish in perth- hes been up in derby for 6 months- good fishing up there... :O if anyone who catches fish needs a deckie hit me up.. im not working till end of jan so im available anytime.. south of river but hey, to cacth a real fish.. ill travel anywhere :D i got gear, im pretty sure it will hold up to most things... 24kilo rod stradic 8000fi with 40lb i usually fish 50lb leaders.. very happy to chip in for fuel and all that... i just want to catch a fish.. i try and try and try but i fail...
anyways until next week...
stay tuned.
cheers guys,
dwayne

Caprice Jig Does it Again
Submitted by Seaquest on Wed, 2010-12-22 20:25Got out for a fish today after a long ten week break. Left at 12pm and where on our way home by 1.30pm. Two drifts for three dhuys. Got mine on a Caprice jig. Also got a small flathead on the jig as well. These jigs are deadly on any species. Mates dad got his first ever dhuy. After bagging out thought we do the right thing and head home. Great arvo after a long break.

The boys reported that they were a bit shy but plenty there. Water temp peaked at just over 21C.

So many slackers!
Submitted by Goodz on Wed, 2010-12-22 19:22How is it that on the busiest week of the year there are so many people getting out for a fish midweek and not at work!!!!!!
Okay, maybe I'm just a little jealous that you've all been puling in fish while I've been working my ass off... luckily today was my last day at work! If only the weather was looking better down south where I'm headed for christmas :( might be a while till I get out and into some decant fish.
But seriously, how do you guys manage to get out midweek so often? (JohnF you slacker!)

Hitting the river with Lemax rods this summer
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Wed, 2010-12-22 15:11As the weather warms and river temperatures continue to increase the bream, flatties, chopper tailor and blowies are all firing up.
If you're into fishing the rivers and looking for a last minute Christmas present, or just for some new gear for 2011, here's an overview of some of the Lemax rods that are more than up to the task as Bear doesn't mind pointing out in this recent post --> here <--.
Pro Tiny
The Pro Tiny range of rods have incredibly thin blanks and are a great looking and well priced entry level graphite rod. There are five sizes available between 4'6 and 6'6 suitable for lures up to 25g depending on whether you're using yaks around snags or landbased luring.
The rods have Lemax' SiC guides, cork butt and cork reel seat.
There are a couple of people on the forums who have these rods and love them, one member uses the 5'0 model for his light tackle fishing for pinkies and since buying his first has come back for three more so they've got a fair bit of rough-and-tumble built into them.
RRP for the models mentioned is between $80 and $105.
You can check out all the specs on the rods here.
Blue Mountain
The Blue Mountain is another great looking graphite rod at a reasonable price. The four sizes between 5'0 and 6'6 are suitable for lures up to 25g.
The rods come with Lemax SiC guides, cork butt and graphite reel seat.
I hear regular positive feedback on the action and durability of the Blue Mountain rods. A few guys over east who regularly use them in creeks and dams around Brisbane have been stoked with their fishability but their ability to handle knocks from snags in these sorts of waters.
RRP for the models mentioned is between $100 and $140.
You can check out all the specs on the rods here.
Black Rose
When you pick up a Black Rose rod you can feel the quality straight away. The 5'0 and 5'6 rods, while officially rated to 17lb, are somewhat overstated and are perfect for people looking for smaller estuary rods.
The rods come with Fuji SiC guides and Fuji reel seat and have a cork butt.
Silly posted a fantastic Exmouth report last year where he got a stack of fish on the Lemax Black Rose that gives a good indication of their worth.
RRP for the two models mentioned is between $150 and $165.
You can check out all the specs on the rods here.
I'll post a few more rods up in the next day or two as well as details on some of the new stock which has recently hit Perth.
Please PM me if you've got any questions.

Pending World Record Barra
Submitted by Bunny on Wed, 2010-12-22 13:41A mate called me this morning to say among some good fish he had caught last night at Lake Monduran his uncle got a big one they decided to keep. After numerous phone calls I was able to track down an officail weigh station nearby and she ended up going 44.64 kg.
Well done Dennis Harrold!! Out of a kayak too! If the record is accepted it easily surpasses David Powell's Tinaroo effort of 37.85 kg.
I'll post some photos when they come through.
By the way that's just shy of 99 pounds, gives you something to aim for Dennis!!

busselton fishing report
Submitted by rocky on Tue, 2010-12-21 23:20hey everyone,
headed out to the 4 mile in busselton caught quite a few fish which included skippy, pink snapper, sambos, rays and sharks. was a fun day headed out at 3pm and on the first cast pulled up a snapper but was under by 5cm and a few more snapper after that but they all were just under. so we moved looking for the big one but came to a school of skippy and kept about 6 with the biggest one been 45cm, and then the big rod went off and there was a shark on the end of it, was it fun with it jumping fully out of the water 4 or 5 times then wraped it self around my mates anchor line it was about 2m. the last fish of the day was a few sambos that went about 15kg. all in all it was a plesant time out in the water since it has been a while. hope everyone who went out today got a feed. will be out tom.
thanks rocky

Keeping undersized fish / crabs
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2010-12-21 22:26Went down to Palm Beach Jetty tonight to flick around some new TT Twitchblade lures, and had some luck catching a flathead, snook, and chopper tailor. What pissed me off was a couple of people keeping undersize tailor and crabs. There was woman with a kiwi accent 10m down the jetty from me pulling up her crab nets and just emptying her catch into a bucket without even measuring them. I know for a fact that all of the crabs she kept were not sized but she didnt even check once.
Then i fished up at the top platform where an old bloke was catching tailor, and i started to get a few on the Switchblade, the fish i saw caught wouldve range from 25cm-32cm, and i was catching and releasing anyway and the old bloke was releasing his undersize fish, then the family on the other side of him started catching them and the loud-mouth-know-it-all woman started yahoo-ing about what nice size herring her family had started catching, but they were actually tailor. So after i saw them put a couple of undersize fish in the bucket i yelled out to them that they better watch out about keeping undersize tailor because if they get caught they will recieve massive fines and may appear in court, and told them I see the fisheries down here quite often. I have actually never seen the fisheries down there, and i dont know what the fine is, and im pretty sure you wouldnt have to go to court, but I was just trying to use scare tactics as the woman was trying to blatantly ignore me and then was trying to pass them off as herring but im pretty sure they knew they were tailor because as i was saying all this, they pulled up another tailor and she said she was going to release this one because it was a bit small, then in the corner of my eye i saw her put it in the bucket!! A guy even further up then started to tell the family about how he had been fined for catching snapper out of season, and mentioned that he was fined around $450.
After this i saw them trying to sneakily measure the fish without anyone seeing them, and you could tell the fish were undersized just by looking at their worried faces! THEN, they proceeded to fillet the fish they had caught and started fishing again!! By this stage i was pretty angry, but there was nothing else i could do, I had warned them and i was just hoping the fisheries would rock up.
I know this topic has been done to death on this site, but im just posting because you never know who reads through this site, im hoping someone from the department does and decides to check out the jetty some time soon.
Im NOT a happy fisherman tonight!!
Goodnight all, Beau.

Beach/Sand Worms?
Submitted by wazzbat on Tue, 2010-12-21 20:54I was south of Dawesville on the weekend with the kids down at a beach. I thought I'd show the boys how to dig down for water. I was about 2 meters from where the water/waves were reaching up the beach and dug down to my elbow. The hole was slightly wider than my arms and I managed to dig up about 12 sand worms? I didn't know you could get them down there or anywhere to tell you the truth. Has anyone had any experience with beach worms and was it just a fluke that I dug that many in one spot or would they be that thick all over the beach?
My eldest son wanted to take them home to put in our worm compost heap
but I ended up giving them to a guy fishing for whiting a bit further up the beach who was doing quite well without my worms I might add. I will try digging up a few more and try to catch a feed of whiting myself next week some time.

quick gero report
Submitted by poddyfish on Tue, 2010-12-21 16:10just a real quickie this one guys as im out again over the next few days and will hopefully throw something decent together!
went out this morning for a solo dive - struggled trying to find a dive buddy but never mind stayed relatively shallow and took it easy
caught up with flagpole out there he was on tank and i left him when i headed in as he was off to try jig a couple of dhus..
first drop in 10m there where fish everrrrrrywhere... nothing huge beside the 2 40kg monster sambos that came in for a look... they where massive!
huge school of juvy yellowtail kings , buffys , small mackies , big parrots and ive never seen so many small trout! everything was chasing this bait school and was quiet a awesome spectical. Nailed a solid trout so all was good runs on the board in the first drop....
switched over to the camera to get some footage - got some half decent stuff of dhuies trout couple of blue groper etc but unfort the monster sambos didnt return...
tried a couple of other spots for not alot - current was fairly strong which made breathing up difficult
nailed a nice baldie of about 5kg and called it a day.....
had a ball viz was unreal and cant wait to do it all again tomorrow! hopefully ill bump into a big dhu this time round!
