All Boat Business today
Submitted by Oracle on Thu, 2010-12-30 18:19Took the boat out for a pot check and quick dive today after the wind was playing nicely. Started heading out to find my GPS was on the blink and driving blind. The pot got a miss but the sounder was working so found some ground, dropped down and kept working on the underwater hours.
Then the drama when i got home - after going over the basics myself without success, who the heck is going to look at my boat with next to no notice this time of year.... OH SHIT! Early next week is looking SO good too!!!!
Called ABB and they told me to bring it down and we'll see what we can do. Spoke to the boys at the desk after dragging the boat down and got the cold shoulder of - "sorry mate, really busy! Check with service but not likley as EVERYONE'S boat is urgent"... yeah - great!
Saw Andrew who's in charge of the service Dept and not only did he make time for me there and then without blinking, but got his Garmin tech onto the job. Hour later, the Stabi is sitting at home waiting for 48 hours time when this wind is goneeeeee......
Key message here - VERY IMPRESSED! Well done ABB!

Moore River Bash Dec 29th 2010
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Thu, 2010-12-30 15:38I decided to break out and do an overnighter at Moore River yesterday. Conditions were trying in the evening with a strong SW and lots of surface weed.

I had some luck early with Tailor 52cms, 49cms and 46cms. More were caught but released. as the evening moved on the Tailor became quite small at chopper size. It was way to windy and weedy to put out a set line so called it a day early and socialised a bit before hitting the swag.

This Tailor was quite interesting as its lower jaw and tail had been bitten off. This poor guy was trying to win a lotto ticket for the biggest fish in the group. Weight wise it was but it didn't come up to the measure due to "missing bits" (a bit like me LOL).

The morning saw some balmy conditions albeit still a SW breeze. Quite a smoke haze due to Toodyay fire.I started fishing at 4:30am using baby Mullies and got hammered by quite good size Herring. A few chopper Tailor managed to get a crack but were all released. I kept a few Herring for the smoker and release a large number.

I left the beach at 7am and cruised home to do the chores (that's the bit I hate about fishing). This was some of the result.

Soft Plastics clean up
Submitted by piston broke on Wed, 2010-12-29 15:34Had a great day fishing in 40m West of Hillaries today. I decided it was time to bite the bullet and use only soft plastics (7inch mcarthys), while my two mates used squid with a wrasse sweetener.
First spot and I had hooked up solid to a good Breaksea before they had even baited up (cheating they said).
I then followed up with a Sambo of 15kgs (released). We moved to the next spot a I was the rose between two thorns . All lines went down together (mine much slower) and touch touch whack im into a Jewie of 11kgs.
Over the next couple of hours the bait boys got 2 jewies 500(released) and 540 (kept) plus a baldie and nice flathead. I kept my best to last , teasing a 12kg jewie into falling for the trap(released).
All fish were measured with the virtually unbreakable Re-Pete Fish Ruler
cheers Pete.

Shock leaders For Surfcasting?
Submitted by Hammerhead on Tue, 2010-12-28 14:05How many people use shock leaders for surfcasting? If i had 20lb mainline would i use a 60lb leader for a 12ft rod or would i
need to go smaller , how long would it have to, would it need to wrap around the reel a few times ,does the join become a problem with the rod guides?

Reel recommendation for 12ft Rovex Bario surf rod
Submitted by Wet Dreams on Mon, 2010-12-27 22:30Hi all,
Well I managed to pick up a 12ft Rovex Bario surf rod today, extremely pleased with it so far.
But I'm in need of a decent reel for it now. Have tryed a Penn 950ssm reel on it and don't like it at all, no good to cast with.
I'm after something extremely smooth and can hold a good amount of line. Would love a Daiwa Saltiga Surf 6000 but is a bit over my budget. Hoping to spend $300-350 at the most.
Thought maybe a Daiwa Emblem Pro 5500? Just wanting a light, smooth spinning reel.
Most importantly the combo will be used for tailor, salmon, and if I'm lucky enough mulloway haha.
Any help would be muchly appreciated.

SCUBA gear malfunction
Submitted by Oracle on Mon, 2010-12-27 22:17To any and all that may be able to shed some light here.
I went for a dive today with a few buddies off Rotto and dropped in on Catherals. Went throguh the checks spoke about the dive, got into the water, dropped down and all good. Ran straight into a very curious puffer fish and and then started to swim off to the amazing swim throughs and drop off that I've been itching to hit for ages. Look back, both buddies are with me. Less than a minute later, get the tap - one buddie missing. Quick search, no bubbles, missing one buddie - WTF?? Look up, see the missing buddie on the surface - no deco stop. Up we go to check out what happened.
Turns out that the tank/Reg had malfunctioned. We dropped down with 240 bar, spend the first two minutes down there and then the air STOPPED. Michelle dashed for the surface using the main reg and the half breath in the 2nd reg. Getting into the boat, her computer is showing 0 bar yet the BC inflated - but got no air through the reg. The pressure of the tank wasn't consistant either. Not the normal high pressure squeal - yet 240 bar at start up?
Any ideas? She is heading back to the hire place to get their opinion but like to see what you guys think first so she doesn't get a bull shit answer. If we were deep into catherdals, this could have gone ugly fast!
Cheers
Jason

f*^king hardedst decision of my life
Submitted by aussie_breamer on Mon, 2010-12-27 21:56hey all.
Does any one know what the Australian record for Silver Bream (tarwine) is??????
sooo, I was fishing at one of my spots in the swan 2day, started of with plastics and got a tailor and 6 bream, nothing huge, moved to another spot and put on a green and yellow 1/12 tt ghost blade, started flicking it arround and mannaged another smallish bream 2 flathead, one went a good 50cm.!!!
next I hooked a huge fish. whent on several lone line burning runs, I was thinking it was a mulloway, but after atleast a good 5 minute battle a fu@!#$g HUGE silver bream surfaced... i was in awe and after finnally getting it up onto the jetty, I measured.it.........
It whent a bloody huge 61 cm!!!!! and weighed a good 3 1/2 - 4 kilo!!!!!
I was then left with the extreamly hard decision of killing and keeping it and have a crack of holdind a Aussie record, or to release the huge beast and be extreamly satisfied.
In the end, I swam him for a litle while, and he/she swam off strongly.
what are your opinions on weather I should have kept it or not and if you have ever heard of a Tarwine getting this big??
cheers,
Tom

Fishing today next to garden island causeway
Submitted by troy fuller on Mon, 2010-12-27 14:07Went fishing today with the GF for the first time ever, wanted to teach her to fish. To my suprise her first cast was better then anyones first cast it was perfect and the squid jig went a far distance, very very impressed tbh..
Drifted around some broken ground and got some nice squid to start off with. Then nothng for about 30mins, decided to pull out some of my new lures i got for christmas, was a bit sketchy and i never really caught anything other than sambos, squid tuna and that sorta of fish on a lure.
First cast of my 1m diver and I've hooked up i was shocked lol got it to the boat and it's a pike? or something like a gardy not to sure what it is, big big teeth on it tho.
Went for a troll with a few lures to try get my GF a fish, she was on and pulled in another pike a good 50-60cm long. She was stoked :D
Went for a troll around the 4-5m mark and my rod got a massive run, thought it must be better than the pike we have been catching, as a nice boy i let her wind it in, a nice size tailor. Was very proud of her :D
trolled around some more and got some more pike and squid, no more tailor =(
Would love to catch more tailor, where abouts is a nice spot from the beach, or dingy. Try some more of my x-mas lures
All in all 40 degree day, went to glass around 10. Excellent day.
