tuesday/wednesday
Submitted by GrahamM on Thu, 2010-11-04 19:04Decided to go up to Moore river for a fish instead of having a big one and going to Ascot. Me and Nicki (the wife ) Jackson 8 Heath 4 and Austin 1 all headed off and picked up Sherbert on the way all set for a relaxing afternoon fishing then camping on the beach. After the road works and some bumpy driving (4x4) we were at the spot now all we had to do was set up the sun shade then the tent and last and most importantly the fishing rods. A big thanks to Sherbs for his help we were all done in no time but it was never going to be Quick enough for Heath who was asking flat out to have his rod set up cause he wanted to fish.
The afternoon was pretty slow and we got lots of sand whiting 2 hooks two at a time and Sherbs had 3 hooks and got 3 at a time and not too much else. Nicki and the kids had a swim, crazy if you ask me as to me it was freezing but they seemed to enjoy it. Then a lovely smell - Nicki had dinner ready for us all, satay sticks and a hamburger each hit the spot perfectly.
Now time for the big line out. Sherbs had it. he got most of the action and was keen to see Nicki land something so when the reel went off it was her turn and she got a small shark a bronzie i think and between us 5 Banjos as well as a couple of big swings and misses as well as a few bite offs. Kids off to bed and we sat up waiting for the elusive Mulloway but to no avail.
Sherbs was the first up and had a chopper as i was getting up at 4ish. not long after i had the eagle ray which kept me honest. the kids thought it was great and flapped like a bird. Then we got a few more Tailor but not really exciting the biggest went about 1kg. The sun was up by now and the kids and Nicki too so Heath was keen as usual and got amongst the little Sand Whiting still in his PJ's too keen to get dressed. Then the Blowies moved in and we decided to call it a day but not before Sherbs got a new nick name from the Kids as the Blowie King!
All in all a much better way to spend Melbourne Cup had a great overnight stay with great company thanks for joining us Sherbs.

to brighten your day
Submitted by Juneka on Thu, 2010-11-04 16:06It's been a day of really sad news... this is to take your mind off it and have a smile...
A couple has a dog that snores. Annoyed because she can't sleep, the wife goes to the vet to see if he can help.
The vet tells the woman to tie a ribbon around the dog's testicles, and he will stop snoring.
'Yeah right!' she says.
A few minutes after going to bed, the dog begins snoring, as usual. The wife tosses and turns, unable to sleep.
Muttering to herself, she goes to the closet and grabs a piece of red ribbon and ties it carefully around the
dog's testicles.
Sure enough, the dog stops snoring. The woman is amazed.
Later that night, her husband returns home drunk from being out drinking with his buddies. He climbs into bed,
falls asleep and immediately begins snoring loudly. The woman decides maybe the ribbon might work on him. So, she goes to the closet again, grabs a piece of blue ribbon and ties it around her husband's testicles. Amazingly, it also works on him!
The woman sleeps soundly. The husband wakes from his drunken stupor and stumbles into the bathroom. As he stands in front of the toilet, he glances in the mirror and sees a blue ribbon attached to his privates. He is very confused, and as he walks back into the bedroom, he sees the red ribbon attached to his dog's testicles.
He shakes his head and looks at the dog and whispers, 'I don't know where we were or what we did, but, by God we took FIRST and SECOND place!

abalone season opens 7th november
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2010-11-04 13:48West Coast abalone season reduced to FIVE sessions- Fisheries Department media release
The 2010 season opens on 7 November and runs for five Sundays, until 5 December.
Recreational fishing for abalone, in the zone from Busselton Jetty to the Greenough River mouth, is only permitted between the hours of 7am and 8am on the prescribed Sundays.
Department of Fisheries Senior Management Officer Martin Holtz said the total fishing time of only five hours made it one of the world’s most tightly managed recreational fisheries.
“The reduction in fishing time, by one session, is necessary to manage the recreational catch to 40 tonnes,” Mr Holtz said. “In the last two years, the recreational sector has caught 48.6 tonnes and 44 tonnes (respectively) from the West Coast Zone.
“It is important each sector is managed to its allocated catch to ensure the sustainability of the fishery. The commercial sector is managed separately, to a yearly quota of 36 tonnes.
“The new arrangements will help to ensure the many thousands of fishers, who enjoy the annual opportunity to collect this seafood delicacy, can continue to do so in the future.”
On each Sunday during the season, licensed recreational abalone fishers can each take a maximum of 20 Roe’s legal-sized abalone, which measure 60 millimetres or larger.
Mr Holtz said this year the department would have the benefit of more mobile patrols of Fisheries and Marine Officers, to answer questions fishers may have about the abalone fishing rules and to ensure compliance in this important and unique recreational fishery.
“Significant fines apply to people in possession of undersize abalone or over the bag limit,” he said. “It is also important that fishers remember they can not collect abalone for other people on the beach, nor remove abalone from the reefs if it is smaller than the legal size.
“If you want a feed of abalone you need to get a licence and get wet, but please keep safe and check the weather and swell conditions to make sure you can fish safely.”
A comprehensive brochure is available for fishers wanting more details about the West Coast Zone abalone season. The Recreational Fishing Guide – Abalone 2010/11 is available online at www.fish.wa.gov.au or from Department of Fisheries offices and information outlets.

Support Our Sponsors
Submitted by abeldog on Thu, 2010-11-04 13:11There has been lots of discussion on what charter boat people should go on out of Perth..
My view and that's my view only is that we should support the operators that support us.
When it comes to charters in Perth Saltwater Charters should be our number one choice.

yesterdays trip to rotto!
Submitted by Dreamtime on Thu, 2010-11-04 11:16hey guys, so decided to make the most of the weather forecast yesterday and decided to go for a fish with brad (anytime brad). well we launched from woodies at about seven with the NE winds blowing a lil. made the call to just go get some squid for bait/feed to get some of those bloody tricksy kgs(thumpers hopefully) but after 2 drifts with not a touch on either jig the patience was running thin and decided to go out the back of rotto.
when we were almost there brad stopped the boat coz he noticed a decent size school of SOMETHING under the boat bout 10 metres to 30 metres deep so quickly rigged up a small jig and dropped it right through the school, first drop nothing, second drop 3 cranks and copped a hell of a whack but no hook up
, pulled the jig up and saw there was some pretty decent tooth marks on the jig right below the hook, that would be right, had a couple more drops with nothing and the school soon disappeared. had not seen a thing at all to inspire the next decision made(no birds, no fish jumping) but decided to put out some lures and have a troll off west end, prob ten minutes went past and brad was on, the fish was no match for his 24kg trolling outfit and he dragged in a healthy lil sbt.
by this time the water was gettin flatter and flatter and eventually got to glass
and the birds and fish were busting up everywhere, i then decided to chuck a small lure on my 6kg t-curve and diawa excellor, brad was laughing and saying that he had to see this haha, so only trolled the one rod for a chance to see wat she could do, 5 mins again and BANG she started sceaming, tightened the drag a bit and managed to stop it, after a while had it under the boat and as soon as it saw the surface off she went again screaming for the bottom (i love those last desperate runs, they pull so fast on light gear)
soon boated the tuna and went prob 8 kg. brad then decided to chuck his light rod out as well to have some fun, and fun he had hahaha, well we ended up with nine tuna 6-9kg range, 6 of which were double hook-ups and in some of the nicest conditions ive seen out there, finished it off by checkin out 3 or 4 big whales doin there thing and a lazy turtle just chillin sunbaking on the surface, fun fun fun. ps. no pics SORRY, but i am goin to the shops today to get myself one of the panasonic lumix cams, i hear theyre not too bad. thanks, Jamie

Where to find mussels in the ocean?
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Thu, 2010-11-04 10:39I have a friend who is doing yet another study on Swan River mussels.
As part of the study she needs to sample mussels from the coastal ocean (i.e. not in the river) to get base-line measurements. Can anyone give me a spot where you're almost guaranteed to find some (either off rocks, a jetty or snorkelling around)? North of the river is preferable, I'm sure she will be willing to go south for a 'sure thing' spot. I suggested Trigg to her, and she didn't find any there (which surprised me).
Any tips are much appreciated. It's one of those things.. I know mussels are all over the place, but i can't think of a spot to say "you will definitely find them here".

Even More Ambers
Submitted by JohnF on Thu, 2010-11-04 10:21Me and my Brother in law went out, with Daz and Chrisp following later.
Very windy in the morning, we left at 8.30 but had to hang inshore for about 45 minutes until the patience wore thin and we headed out. Strong north easterly, but it died right down half way to Rotto and by the time we reached Rotto it was light winds, and stayed that way all day....we came home in an almost glassoff. EXCELLENT!
Fishing was a bit tough. Fish on the sounder, but had to work very hard for the fish, but we had it much easier than others it would seem. Spoke with Justonemore cast and Justin out there, both had a hard time and not sure if they boated a fish despite a LOT of jigging.
It was my bro in law’s first time jigging……he gave up on jigging after 15 minutes on his Torium 30 completely stuffed (I did warn him it would be tough work on that gear...) so I put him on live baits which were also slow but did get two nice Ambers, so he was happy.
I got 3 ambers to the boat on jig, lost another 2 to sharks (got one jig back.....munched....), lost another and 120 m of brand new YGK braid to an incorrect drag setting on my spanking new Ocea Jigger (which was pure SWEETNESS!!!!!) and my favourite jig....got hit about another 4 times for no hookup…..so it was tough, but worth while.
Daz Chrisp and one of their mates did better than us on Team Prowler….good fishos those boyz!
At the end of the day, just after Daz and Chrisp left and we were the only boat left, I had probably the best fishing experience I have ever had.....had just packed all the gear away, Daz was just heading out of sight over the horizon and we were feeling like a very small boat on a very big, dead flat ocean, we started the motors and started to drive off and all hell broke loose....Ambers busting up on the surface everywhere, smashing baitfish all around the boat. There were hundreds of Ambers within meters of the baot. With all rods packed away except my Tierra flick rod with a McCarthys paddle tail (rigged for tuna) I flung it out, and got SMASHED on the surface with a big massive splash...awesome! Great fight on the light gear.
Will remember those 15 minutes for a long time!
