Submitted by meglodon on Thu, 2019-01-31 22:54Have I heard right, ch 7news reporting that a man was stung by a stone fish at a local beach. I can’t say that I have heard of this before, and with a report that a spango has been caught locally who knows what is going to turn up next.

You have to feel for the people at Mendie on the Darling river
Submitted by meglodon on Tue, 2019-01-29 19:25I think it will take a long long time for the fishing to recover from the fish kills that has occurred over there poor buggers. What is real bad is that there may not be a quick cure for the problem and it could get worse before it gets better. From what I have read murry cod are a slow growing species and the likely hood of the species recovering this decade is very slim indeed

Long cast reel help
Submitted by Seafarer 5 on Tue, 2019-01-29 17:58Looking for help choosing a long cast reel to load with 30 pound mono for casting big baits around shallow reef. Anyone had experience with either the Shimano big baitrunner long cast, Shimano Ultegra surf reel or penn 7500 long cast? The reel will cop a bit of boat spray so good waterproof seal is important.
thanks in advance

Bringing fish home.The regulations.
Submitted by Roughas on Tue, 2019-01-29 16:56G'day all. I'm planning a Montes trip in May and while I don't plan to make it a freezer filling excercise I will bring some fish back. Sorry, PLAN to bring some fish back. My take on the rules is that fillets need to have skin left on for both the trip back to shore and the drive home. (I can't say I've ever worried about the latter to be honest; I've been more concerned with labelling stuff properly). I can't see that leaving the skin on is going to help the quality of the fish, but rules is rules I guess. I wasn't going to freeze the fillets, just get 'em close to frozen and process them at home in vacuum bags etc. Any opinions on the best way to go about it. We'll have one Engel on board running off a big deep cycle battery charged when the engine is running. I'd appreciate any opinions on the best way to go about it. Thanks, John

What Australia Day Means to Me
Submitted by striker on Mon, 2019-01-28 18:53So used to go marroning with my Father and Grandfather as a kid on the Australia Day Weekend. So now I have a young fella of my own I decided that the tradition had to continue.
Awesome weekend except was disappointing to see people using kayaks to pull their nets and some using box traps.
No phone reception so no chance to let fisheries know unfortunately.
Who else has an Australia Day tradition?

Launch at Fortescue River mouth or Gnoorea
Submitted by Roughas on Mon, 2019-01-28 11:38I'm thinking of heading to the Montes in May and would like to launch at Fortescue river. I'm a bit concerned about the references to second vehicles being needed for recovery as we will probably going solo (vehicle is a diesel Pajero). I'd appreciate comment on this issue based on personal experience or observation. In addition, what is the situation launching further north at Gnoorea as an alternative? We'll be taking a 21 foot Penguin with a extra fuel, water and other supplies, so weight will be a bit of an issue, particularly with launching. Thanks, John

ZX Lures
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2019-01-27 10:08Ive been flicking an ecogear ZX lure off the beach in Mandurah. Nice little lure to use, doesnt twist the line when cast and casts a good distance on light tackle.
Lots of fun, walking along the beach, just with the rod and a shoulder bag, flicking the lure out every 20 mtrs or so
Ive caught a few good size yellow fin whiting. Hoping for a flathead but no luck with them yet.
So the ZX is becomming my favorite lure . Just wondering if others have used the ZX and have a recommendtion for colours,
or does it not make much difference? The one i have is all silver .
