Exmouth reds
Submitted by _salty__dog_ on Sat, 2026-01-17 14:19 Hey all, taking my son up to Exmouth for the first time over Easter. I have a 6.5m Northbank so happy explore and put in miles. We have never been there but would love to get him onto a red emperor or trout. Dont need marks but if anyone had advice that would be great! I have been looking at charts and am thinking 15-20km North of North West cape may be a good starting point. I have all the gear but no idea
(No idea in Exmouth!) Plenty of fishing in shark bay so I well aware of what the tax man can be like !!!
Much appreciated!

Deep Dropping and bent butt rods
Submitted by _salty__dog_ on Sat, 2026-01-17 11:36After some advice, recently got an electric reel with bent butt rod. Is it ok to deep drop with the bent butt in a 0 degree rod holder? I am not sure if the angle would be too great if the rod loaded up? I have 2x 30degree rod holders at the back of the boat but they are not in the ideal position. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Albany Jan 2026
Submitted by Piggy on Wed, 2026-01-14 09:34Thought I would give a summary of the week I had in Albany.... Cheers to a couple of members on here that gave me some good info.
Headed down South last Tuesday and got settled in. There was no wind at all and there had been bugger all wind since the Saturday aparently. Weather looked primo for the Wednesday although the swell was up arond 3.5m which I was a little concerned about but yeah after a bit of advise wasnt really a drama. We got up reasonably early on the wednesday nothing too stupid and headed out.. We launched at Emu Point and its a great boat ramp, perfect for all size boats. Main reason why we decided to go from here was that it had a fillet table.... Glass off in King George sound until we got between the islands around Bald head. Due to the swell and tide it was a litte wishy washy through there but nothing dangerous was like that for about 1-2 nautical mile and then it cleaned right up. Gentle rollers with the occassional large roller coming through but nothing bad. Headed out to the 70s like a few people suggested (It isnt that far off to be honest) Found a heap of flat coral with alot of fish showing but didnt really catch much besides Nannygai and Seargent Baker.... Caught one of the biggest seargent baker I have ever seen, I rekon it would have been 700mm plus. We kept it coz one of the guys wanted to try eat it. Anyway we moved around and found around 7-8 spots with perfect ground, heaps of fish, heaps of bait but could only get nannygai. It was around 10am and we werent having much luck so we came in shallower to give it a go... Once again found heaps of ground with cracking fish showing but nothing that wanted to take the hook..... Some of the spots were in 50m and you were literally only 1-2 mile off the shore, was pretty awesome!
Anyway ended up with a handful of nannygai and thats about all. Headed in and just did some cruising and a bit of squid fishing on the way in. Fillited the fish and fed the pelicans that come cruising up to the fillet station as soon as they see an esky... The Seargent baker was filleted and after removing the numerous bones in it we got a fair bit of meat out of it and it tasted bloody nice, I thought it was better than the nannygai to be honest!
While we were filleting a local came down and emptied a heap of crab shells in the bin. Had a bit of a chat with him and was a good sign that people had been getting a few crabs which was next on our list to do.
For the rest of the week it was windy as shit... Typical Albany. Did all the touristy stuff (Whaling station, beaches, drank, ate, explored)
We decided to go scooping one night just for a look.... We didnt know where to go just looked on google earth and found a spot in Frenchmans bay... To our surpise we got a decent feed of very large crabs. It was about 50/50 some where full of meat the others were empty. As it was real windy for the rest of the week we didnt venture out much in the boat. We decided to take all the kids to the Kalgan River dropping crab nets not expecting too much but once again we got a heap of crabs and the kids enjoyed it. Went scooping another night after this and got a few more crabs as well - FYI there were 18 of us down there so well within any bag limit etc.
All in all pretty good joint, if I go down again I wont worry about taking the bigger boat down I would just take the tinny and have fun with the crabs and squid. The way Albany is there is always a sheltered bay, beach, river that you can get to and have a good time no matter which way the wind is blowing!
Next trip is Gnaraloo....... CANNOT WAIT!!!!
Cheers

Sharkbay no fishing fiesta
Submitted by stricko on Wed, 2026-01-07 18:40Just seen the sharkbay fishing fiesta won't have a fishing competition any more it's just a fiestanow apparently. They are blaming the changes on the new rules but sounds like the committee has taken the left turn and gone green doesn't sound like sharkbay to me only ever went to one and there wasn't a lot of fish weighing in but a lot of people having a good time that was about 20 years ago seems a shame.

Albany Locals? Weather thoughts
Submitted by Piggy on Thu, 2026-01-01 12:02Heading down to Albany next Tuesday for a week. Tossing up whether to take the bigger boat so I can get out deep or just the tinny for crabs and squid.
Any of the Albany locals can tell me their thoughts on next weeks weather? To me it looks pretty good wind wise but swell is an issue. Would I be able to get out deep?
Appreciate any help

Fads
Submitted by Sea goat on Tue, 2025-12-30 18:13 Hi guys.
just wondering if anyone has any input on how the fads are going currently. I'm considering heading to either the ones behind rotto, or off ocean reef, but the ones of ocean reef haven't been in very long. Anyone have any reports on which are holding fish? Or too early still?
any advice greatly appreciated!
cheers

Demersal Reopening Spring 2027 - Inshore Snapper
Submitted by Ush on Tue, 2025-12-30 12:31What are thoughts on the Fisheries commitment to reopen in Spring 2027 - it appears that a committment is indeed in place.
The question I have is related to the Snapper Spawning Closure (August-March). If they reopen the demersal fishery for Spring 2027, this would be well within the Snapper Closure and therefore lock out inshore snapper fishos until 2028.
I've posed the question to Recfish - a reopening of the fishery in 2027 should cater for all, including inshore snapper fisherman - who frequent the Sounds etc.
Cheers

Veratron VMH35 Gauge Wiring
Submitted by Matches11 on Mon, 2025-12-22 15:10Hi All,
I've got a 2008 Tournament Bluewater 2000 with the original 150 E-Tec which is still going strong. The E-Tec had 2 I-Command Gauges which I found good to use. But one of the I-command Gauges died recently and all my internet searches showed that this was a discontinued item and you can't get them anymore.
I did some research and came across the Veratron VMH35 which is exactly the same size as the I-Command gauges so no extra cutting required. It connects to my existing NMEA2000 network and shows all the engine data and sounder & Heading values from the Lowrance Elite9 I have. It also has it's own internal GPS that can be used on the NMEA network if there is an issue with the GPS in the Lowrance. It also setup to show any alarms from the engine. Not cheap at just under $600 but I thought I'd need a decent gauge compatable with the E-Tec that could report any alarms just in case the the second I-Command dies in the near future. Also, it looks mint.
I'm not a wiring expert but I have installed and wired in the Lowarance Elite, Fusion Stereo, VHF radio with no issue in the past. The wiring setup in the boat from factory is pretty basic. There's a positive post and a negative post behind the dash which pretty much everything is attached to. The Nav lights, Anchor light, and Bilge are on a switch panel.
The I-command gauges were just powered through the NMEA network cable but because there is a bit more going on in the VMH35 it has to be powered through the 12 volt system. The wiring harness that comes with VMH35 unit has the standard red(+), Black (-), Yellow (+ ignition) wires, and some other random wires if you needed to hook into analog devices.
My Lowrance Elite had a similar coloured wire setup but all I needed to connect was the Red & Black wires and the NMEA200 drop cable. I didn't connect the Yellow wire to anything. This just meant that I had to turn it on/off manually which is preferable anyway.
With the VMH35 it won't turn on unless the yellow wire is attached as well. I attached the Yellow wire to a slot on my switch panel, with the red and black wires on their repsective posts. When I turn the batteries on and then turn on the switch the yellow wire is connected to the VMH35 lights up and I can toggle through all the menus with no issue. The volt meter on the VMH35 reads ~12.5v as expected. But, when I turn on the ignition I immediately get an over-voltage warning on the VMH35 and volt meter was displaying ~55 volts. As soon as the ignition gets turned off it will return to 12 volts. Apparently 55 volts is what the Alternator in the E-tec generates to power the electrics in the engine but didn't think this would reach the accessories.
According to the wiring diagram I've attached the Yellow wire needs to be attached to 'Terminal 15' where Terminal 30 is the positive and Terminal 31 is negative. This is where I'm stumped. At the moment I've got the Yellow wire attached the Terminal 30 line which is no doubt the issue. But I have no idea how to attach the Yellow wire to the Terminal 15 line or if my boat even has one.
If it's a matter of splicing the Yellow wire into wires coming out of the throttle ignition then I'll have to wave the white flag and get a professional involved as that is beyond my skill set and don't want to damage other systems that are currently working fine. I've searched the Internet and Youtube and can't find anything relevent to my issue at hand.
Just hoped there might be someone on the forums that could point me in right direction, especially if it's somthing straight forward. Photos & screensnips attached. Any guidance will be much appricated. If it needs an Auto Sparky any recommendations?
Cheers.

Submitted by surfer on Thu, 2025-12-11 13:44Hi Guys,
Looking to replace the trailer on my cruiscraft 575, came across seatrail trailers while doing some research. Just wanted to know if any one owns one of these or has experience witht them that can give some feedback on quality and if there a good trailer. i believe the frames are out of Asia and the running parts are local and get assembled locally.

Insurance for a Stage 1 Boat
Submitted by Seaquest on Fri, 2025-12-05 17:03Does anyone know of an insurance company that will insure an aluminium boat that is at stage 1 (all hot works complete and ready for fitout). I have just got a new boat and trailer and doing the fit out myself and was hoping to insure it for theft or accident while travelling . I have to take it back down south from Perth. Most of the standard boat insurance companies will only insure a finished boat. Any help would be much appreciate.
