New Bimini and Clears
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2016-11-30 09:49It’s time to redo my bimini and clears using the existing frame and I’ve had a range of quotes and hoping for some feedback on the following trimmers who came back with the most competitive quotes once I had to manually figure out the GST on some quotes:
Custom Made Boat Covers in Alexander Heights
JP’s Trim Shop in Malaga (formerly Karratha)
Canning Motor Trimmers
Total Canvas in Bayswater
Also got quotes from Boat Canopies WA and Cushion Covers who I know do great work but they came in a few hundred more than the best quote. Prestige Motor Trimmers also quoted me but must be very busy and don't need the work.

Catching occys during cray season
Submitted by 22Tango on Wed, 2016-11-30 07:13Hi All,
I've seen in a couple of tackle stores recently fully rigged with cement in the end ex-pro black PVC occy pots. Each setup has 2 pipes running alongside each other with the openings oposing.
In an attempt to make cray fishing even more productive as well as entertaining (my little Italian mate sqeals like a girl when they come on board) I was considering setting up 3 strings and anchoring them between 2 pots. Utilising shark clips to attach it to the pots the first thing we'd do is pull the first pot, detach and drop the occy line from the back end of it, empty the pot then proceed to the second pot, haul it, detach the occy line and then haul it as well removing the occy pots one by one via shark clips. Once we've freed the catch we'd then rerig, drop the first pot with occy line attached then move to drop second pot with the tail end of occy line attached.
I was considering using say 50m of second hand cray rope between pots. This year I'm panning to cray fish on sand only, first in 12 meters then once they past move to the other side of the 5 fathom to 24 and fish the sand there. To begin with maybe just set up 1 pair of cray pots with 3 occy pots between as to test how arduos it can be.
Concentrated saline in a squirt bottle would be what I'd consider using to get them out.
Can anyone see any flaws in the concept. I'm thinking the cray pots can limit movement of teh occy pots and also lessen the chances of the occy pots being stolen. Someone might also think twice if they pull cray pot with a line attached to the other end (might have to use somethink other than shark clip).
I look forward to you thoughts
Steve

Shore Catch, help with our bait selection
Submitted by Callum24 on Tue, 2016-11-29 15:54Mick and I have been having a lot of discussions about the different bait we should stock, for when the demersal ban ends, while we have all the staples (mullies, scalies, squid, occy, mullet ect) we also have the chance to source different baits of the highest quality off our very good fish monger and other professional contacts.
We would love some input from members about the bait they would like or have found hard to source for their type of fishing such as herring or cuttlefish for example.
We have been asked about mixed bait packs, what bait packs and baits would you like to see in specific packs? ie offshore pack, beach pack, jetty pack/river pack, maybe even a deep droppers pack
We would really appreciate everyones input no matter what species you target.
Thanks.

Schooling Snapper in Cockburn Sound
Submitted by rigpig on Tue, 2016-11-29 08:49G'Day All
Last week when I was in the Sound fishing for squid I came across a huge school of snapper. They were in a tornado type formation in 7m of water and the spiral formation went from the surface to the bottom. It was awesome to witness and just reminded the missus and I why the ban is in place at the moment.. I have a video on Facebook but stuffed if I can download it off there..

Floating Esky/Container Ideas
Submitted by Lowza on Tue, 2016-11-29 04:37With the summer season coming on, I am looking at doing a substantial amount of wading in the next couple of months.
Mainly estuary stuff but doing the trip to penguin is land also too! Which can have a little swell when the wind picks up.
Looking for a sturdy floating design interested to see what set ups people have.

Cockburn Sound Winds
Submitted by MattV on Mon, 2016-11-28 21:09G'day guys, I'm sure its probably been brought up before -
I've been boating for about 3 years now but quite new to Cockburn Sound. Sniped a day off tomorrow and forcasted winds are to be about 15-20 knots blowing south early on and south easterly by late morning.
I'm normally out at the rocks around woody point anchored up. Whats everyones opinion on winds there? Whats too much and which directions are/aren't safe?
I have a 4.8m runabout but any swell over about 1.5m can begin to give her a bit of struggle.
Thank you everyone, good luck this week!
Matt

Shame the snapper no go is still on
Submitted by Dale on Mon, 2016-11-28 17:18got out for a fish with my young bloke today, didn't raise anything of note, but sounded over some more schools of pinkies. One was very big, but most were just average. Seemed to be in the same area about a kilometre off CBH jetty as the last lot I come across, maybe something there perhaps.

Bigger boats and Barra.
Submitted by johnathon on Sun, 2016-11-27 13:25G'day everyone hope your on the water and not reading this but when you get the chance could you answer a couple of questions?
I've got a 6m Formosa and I'm keen on a Barra trip up north from Hedland but from experiance I don't know a spot were I could launch and use a 6m boat.
I was looking at Derby but I'm told the sound is a muddy desert and your wasting your time.
Ive fished the lower ord and the rock bars make it impossible to run a 6m.
Wyndam?
Beagle bay?
Kulumbaru?
Any help guys would be great as I've got a couple of mates flying over from NSW and I was going to do a few days out of Broome or even a trip to Exmouth but a trip north would be good if we could access a few Barra.
Thanks people.

Anchor winch- tuff winch
Submitted by silly on Sat, 2016-11-26 07:09I've tossing up whether to get an anchor winch as the deckies keep complaining about having to pull anchor haha. Seen all the usual brand like stress free, lone star, sav, micks and came across tuff winch. Tuff winch seems to be considerably cheaper, ($1000) made in aus with 5 year warranty. Are they any good ? Can't seem to find any reviews on them?
Cruise Craft / Bar Crusher
Submitted by Matty15 on Fri, 2016-11-25 19:18So in the market for a new rig and spent a few hours in Bunbury today going over my final 2 choices, Cruise Craft 625HT and BarCrusher 670HT. I know they are completely different boats and not really comparable, but I'm after something with a bit of luxury for when the family come down from Perth like river/canal cruises and the Cruise Craft fits the bill. Also want a boat which will get me deep offshore for fishing being the BarCrusher. When I saw the 670HT today I was a little disappointed with the deck space and vision out the windscreen. The Cruise Craft on the other hand had a noticeable bigger deck space and better finish being a glass boat. I've only ever had ally boats so im used to the harshness of the ride but how are the Cruise Crafts deep offshore when the wind and swell pick up? Any feed back on either boat? Cruise Craft is about 10k more and at the top end of the budget so want to make sure it's worth it. Cheers

Noob question - 5 fathom bank
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2016-11-25 09:54Hi guys
Pretty familiar with this out of Perth. But not around Mandurah area. The silly question is that I thought "the Bank" stopped about the Singleton area, but had someone telling me off Bouvard they caught some large whiting from the 5FB.
Does it stretch that far and then as a newby offshore from Mandurah how far is this off the Cut for example roughly.
Cheers

Info on the white run
Submitted by barcelona125 on Thu, 2016-11-24 20:44Hey guys
just wondering if there is a cray white run along the coast between yallingup and augusta, like what we get metro and west coast ??
Also, what times is it normally, because you normally hear the whites starting north (around jurien) before they hit perth. would it be later for the crays down south ??
any info would be much appreciated
Thanks

Cray pot queries (tampering)
Submitted by brown364 on Thu, 2016-11-24 18:59Just wanted to find out the the more experience crew out there if anyone has issue with the end of the pot coming adrift? Went out first thing this morning from Mindarie and the first three pots all had the end door open and empty of coarse. I didn't see it once last year or in the past three weeks this year then 3 in a row!!
I want to assume that there are no twats out there (that I has been proved a dilution)and we all respect the time and effort that we all put in this time of year although this episode is bringing on doubt!
just wanted to see if others have had the same issue (explainable) or is there just cause for my concern.
Thanks in advance
