I want to catch mullet for bait, any tips?
Submitted by Mayfly on Sat, 2015-01-24 22:01As the title says, I need mullet for bait.
I want to get them in the swan river but where would be the best spot for targeting them? After doing a bit of research, I made my own burley from water, flour, bread and even added a bit of soy milk in there because why not?
Is a float rig with a small longshank the best way to catch them? How long should the leader be?
Just trying to soak up as much info as possible.
Thanks.

What would you buy
Submitted by z00m on Sat, 2015-01-24 16:59If you had 35 giblets to spend on a new rig what would you choose out of these selections?
The Sea Fox is actually a 216 - the ad has the wrong description. Motor is a 4 stroke.
www.boatsales.com.au/boats-for-sale/private/used/SSE-AD-2921815/2009-Sea-Fox-236-Traveler
www.boatsales.com.au/boats-for-sale/private/used/SSE-AD-3203419/2005-QUINTREX-570-SPIRIT
I've sold the cruiser so am on the lookout for something more dedicated to fishing since the missus won't go on the boat. I like the Sea Fox and it is built in the time frame after they built their reputation for rubbish build quality so not worried about that.
My intended use is offshore on the 3 mile and beyond and also now exploring further afield since it won't be tied to a pen. I would like something that won't get me too wet in the chop and would be comfortable with the centre console if it is big enough. The kicker is I need to stay under the 2000kg towing limit of the family car.
If you have other recommendations I'm happy to hear them.

Whose missus regularly fishes ?
Submitted by The Saint on Sat, 2015-01-24 15:47Wondering how many forum members regularly fish with there partners ?
I don't mean a partner who occasionally goes along for the ride, but hard core, and into fishing as much as you are.
Unless she is rostered to work, my regular deckie is my missus, Julie, and on the odd occasion when she does have to work and the forecast is good, she aint happy !
Julie with a nice Steep Point red
With a sambo (amberjack ?) this is about the biggest fish she has brought to the boat unassisted
Her first cobia (caught on a pink z-man soft plastic)
One of MANY pinkies she has boated
Dirk Hartog estuary cod
Her first attempt at deep drop (using an Alvey deck winch). At the time I was still codless after several attempts !
With a soft plastics caught trevally of some description
Of course the down side is I'm not able share the fuel costs, but the upside is there are never any complaints about spending bucket loads on fishing and boating gear and boat and trailer maintenance.
And her idea of a holiday is a couple of weeks at Shark Bay or Walpole, rather than some resort in Bali.
But I must admit, she has put her foot down, next trip has to be either Coral Bay or Exmouth !
Cheers

cracked the code
Submitted by cahal.dahm on Sat, 2015-01-24 09:59The weather was perfect for heading out wide on tuesday so we decided to try Deep Dropping out from Two Rocks. We were lucky and managed to sit on a cruising speed of 36 to 40 knots and we got out in the 250mt mark in no time. We started to drift preparing our gear for the day, as we getting rigged up we found some solid schools of fish so we marked the spot and had one drift over it which turned out to be a double hook up with 3 fish landed on the first drop. With high fives all round one of the boys decided to drop a jig, 3 pump and winds and BANG instant hook up, couple of minutes later a nice 25kg grey band breached the water. With more yelling and screaming we dropped jigs again and same story happened again, jig jig, BANG another nice grey band hits the surface. There was next to no current and we managed to bag out on some nice Grey Banded Cod (8 Bar) in an hour or so. Here are a few pics from the day.

Suggested boat rod
Submitted by jsckematt on Sat, 2015-01-24 09:00Hey all,
Recently we have bought a boat, but this boat is definetley not suited to deep sea fishing.
Unfortunatley the other day while fishing off the boat, I hooked into something decent and much to my disgust; the whole rod snapped.
I'm looking for a decent combo boat rod for under 250 dollars. It doesn't have to be too strong but it must be sensitive. I've been thinking about a baitcast combo such as:
anyone got any ideas?
Thanks all!
Jack
Best chance at marlin? opinions
Submitted by anypuddle on Sat, 2015-01-24 01:53Gents, I want to plan a trip for a milestone birthday in a few years, I am hoping to achieve a long held dream of actually landing a marlin ( hooked and lost 2 in my life - still hurts), please give me some opinions on the best combination of reliable catch/cost/location/time of year. I know its a while away but I need and want to plan ahead. Appreciate any advice. Cheers.

Saltwater Kayak fishing, is it really worth it?
Submitted by berserkfishing on Fri, 2015-01-23 19:40Hey guys,
Sorry for another forum topic so soon but is Saltwater kayak fishing really worth it? I was thinking about getting out to those structures and gutters that landbased fishermen just can't get to! Probably targeting Flathead,Herring, whiting and Spangled Emperor, Baldchin Grouper up north. Was looking at one like this: http://winnerkayak.com/kayaks/Kayaks/65/

Sanctuary Waters
Submitted by Redfinman on Fri, 2015-01-23 17:25There are signs at the "secret lake" where some "different fish" have been caught recently by some of the young anglers on this site.Fisheries/university "people" electro fished the lake and found some surprises thanks to the young blokes. There will be an interesting discussion on 882 6PR "boat dive and fishing show" on Saturday morning.Could be some very interesting "talks". I walked around the lake this afternoon and found 2 of these signs one on a bridge and one near a circular raised garden.
I don't post much up to the site but I would like some comments from the FW anglers about who can control where we fish and who enforces the access or whatever on public open spaces namely ornamental lakes on housing estates.

Met my first bad Rec Fishers in WA after 9 months this morning
Submitted by tassy on Fri, 2015-01-23 11:39So I went up to Point Walter today for some whiting etc, an went to the jetty... said hello to some guys there, was ok for a bit. Second I told em what I was after they changed... some comment about dont you go after my fish and then they just stood next to me whispering an trading gear with each other... lol I have to say it was like being back in highschool.
So I think I am gonna sell up my two big rods today an go buy some spinning gear for flattys etc an stay the hell away from that place:). Lots of nice flattys other places. I do have a question though, is it normal for rec fishers to be so rude to each other when you ask what they use for bait lures etc etc.... an conversation in general. Never run into that before as all others I've met have been really friendly. Anyways after a 4am start, no fish an the nearly overpowering NEED to throw both of them in the Swan I left an went home to the wife :D (need to make nice so I can go to South st an buy a new rod)

How do those rock crabs go as bait?
Submitted by Mayfly on Thu, 2015-01-22 22:32The ones you usually find and the north mole or any rock wall.
I know they're good snapper baits during stormy weather but what would I expect to catch using a live one during a calm day or at sunset at the north mole?

Demersals on livebaits??
Submitted by berserkfishing on Thu, 2015-01-22 21:22Hi guys,
I was just thinking about starting to live bait this summer and was wondering if anyone has caught demersals on live baits, particularly herring as they are plentiful?
Also, if many have caught Yellowtail Kingfish on herring as well?
Cheers,

Suspension Upgrade
Submitted by Peko on Thu, 2015-01-22 15:38I've got a Landcruiser 200 series with a 2" lift and old man emu suspension from ARB. When the current suspension was installed there was never any intention of towing - anything. Times change and with about 3 tonne of boat fully loaded with fuel and gear I really need something a little more adequate to handle the load. Its OK for around town but not stiff enough for travelling long distances up North. Can anybody offer suggestion as to a company I could contact and do business with. I would like somebody that really knows there stuff as opposed to the catalogue flicking salesman.

WA legislation does not allow officers to breath test skippers of boats
Submitted by rigpig on Thu, 2015-01-22 12:19I'm not suggesting that I'm going to go out and get drunk on my boat but I didn't know that the Police can not breath test you on your boat... Other states certainly can.

Dusting off the rods for Coral bay
Submitted by tailor marc on Wed, 2015-01-21 20:16Hey guys,
been a while since i have wet a line and feel ashamed of myself but i have focused alot of my time and effort on my photography and building my name and my work.
Lisa & I are taking a much needed break to Coral bay very soon. Im driving up and staying at the peoples park ocean biew studio apartment.
I plan to do some shore based fishing and need to see if anyone can answer my question.
The one place that took my fancy to have a fish was from the rock wall at the new boat ramp.
Do any of you know if your allowed to fish from here? I searched the forum and google. Some say you can, some say only after charter boats come in the arvo
all help muchly appreciated
