Gomoku for soft plastics

Hi all, im in the market for a soft plastics 3 to 6 kg spinning rod. My budget is up to $150. Someone told me that these Gomoku rods are the way to go.  Are they any good for soft plastics fishing, as i know that they were designed for micro jigging. Any advice or tips would be awesome. Cheers Fab

Need help sourcing freezer unit

A mate of mine had a 200 litre esky with a small freezer unit bolted onto the lid that blew cold air through the esky.It was amazing how quickly it would freeze fish.

He had a problem with it and gave it to a fridgy to fix 12 months ago and has not seen it since.Cannot find the fridgy now.

He now needs to build another one but does not know where to get a freezer unit. The unit on the old one was like you would see on a very small cool room with a small fan blowing the cold air through it.

Can anybody help him out

Thanks.

How's the serenity

Was out about 30ks today.....complete glass, no drift.

JIGGING FOR SNAPPER/DHU

Having had only limited sucess fishing with bait for dhu/snapper (mainly undersized) I am keen  to give  jigging a crack, question ? do you still burly up or just move around watching sounder for signs.

Thanks for any info.

Gladiator Rod Tube

About ten years ago I bought a Gladiator Rod Tube for carrying my rods around.
They're great because they're about 7'long which easily take a 2 piece 13' surf rod.
Mine starting to get a bit old and sorry so I have been searching the internet for a replacement - no luck!
Does anybody out there know who makes them or if anybody still stocks them?
There is a new mob called Gladiator Tackle but they don't do the rod tubes.

Leatherjackets as grub

I have skinned and eaten some before and thought the were pretty darn good. What have everyones else experience been with these fish as dinner.

Missing Fads

 Hey All,

Considering a super early FADs mission tomorrow can anyone tell me if any of them have gone missing? I have heard reports in the past they get lost in storms just don't want to rock up to nothing

Cheers

fishing in storms

Has anyone been electrocuted fishing in a storm ? Me and a friend went to flick some lurers of the north mole yesterday morning wasn't really stormy just cloud cover and our rods were crackling and we both got a mild zapp when casting out enough to nearly make us nearly drop our rods

Quick Trip East – Mackies, Pinkies and Sweeties North of Moreton

For a number of reasons I had to come east last week. Being the weather fanatic that I have become (must have something to do with currently living in the “windy city”), I was checking the Brisbane Bar wind forecast constantly, even before I left!  What do you know, Sunday morning looked the goods so a few days of texts and discussions with my old mate Mal, who by the way is a quality fisherman, set the trip up.

Over the past year or more I have sent a lot of photos to the mates over east with some of our awesome WA captures.  Mal is the only one that has replied, other than those with expletives, sharing photos of his captures.  Without doubt, Mal’s northern Moreton Island, and Brisbane River lizard work, is quality and I wanted to go there and fish the island ground with him and this was an opportunity too good to pass up.

Of course there are always the good intentions of getting up very early fighting fit.  Somehow that went to the dogs (well the fighting fit part) over a fairly long night swapping stories and sharing quite a few cold ones – bloody Brisbane humidity.  I did detect that Mal was a little apprehensive as last time we came to Brisbane we fished the river for a big fat zero and I’m sure he didn’t want that to happen again.  Anyway, off to bed much later than planned and at the 3am wake up I was a little worse for wear.

What a mission.  I definitely felt spoiled living at Sorrento and fishing nearshore out of Hillarys where it is “house to lines in the water” within half an hour on most days.  This trip however had a one and a quarter hour drive to the Spinnaker Sound boat ramp near Bribie Island, boat launching and about an hour to the spot north of Moreton Island.  Nevertheless, we got to the grounds about 6am, with the high tide forecast about 8.30am.  And, the weather was nice and the wind was light.

I think we fished an area called the Freeman Channel, but I don’t really know.  It was interesting though as the depth was about ten metres and you could see the bottom.  It was clearly reefy/rubbly ground where the water filling and emptying Moreton Bay created quite a current and prohibited the bottom filling up with sand.  Anticipation was fairly high as I had seen the fish photos from this area before.

I was pleased to see the rigs Mal had were virtually identical to the floater that I use in Perth.  Lightly weighted double snelled terminal, 2+ metres of wind on to 30lb braid spooled to a baitrunner on an Ugly Stick.  He certainly has a rod and reel collection and the Stella (which must be hidden from the better half) came along too, amongst a few others.  The good old faithful baits as well – whole pilchards and whole squid with plenty of burley for when the current dropped and we could anchor.

Off we go.  The trick here was to cast your lightly weighted whole bait up current and wide and let the natural drift help you position the offering, and retrieve when you were “dragging it”.  With the rate we were travelling in the current, a soft plastic out the back needed nothing other than to be towed along.  Within a couple of minutes Tim-o (no not the one we all know) had a nice sweetlip in the boat.

The next few hours were awesome as we landed quite a lot of nice fish.  One of the changes we had to make was to have at least one gang out there as the mackies made short work of the mono and we lost quite a few.  We also had good success on the high tide when the current slowed and we could anchor and burley – mayhem as all rods were going off at the same time.  We happily fished away and at least were getting some fish in every drift we had.  Mal was clearly showing me what a quality fisherman he is as well by picking up a number of pinkies/sweeties on the plastic, and every other bait he had out.

The young one was starting to get sick of it all by about 10am so we had to come in (after a few more “last drift” calls however, much to his dismay – and ours as we left them biting).  All in all we got a really nice bag, a long way from home.

I must say I really enjoyed fishing with Mal and Tim-o - nice to see masters on their own turf.  The one thing that struck me was the different size and bag limits because if we were fishing in WA, not many fish would have come home.  We don’t make the rules however and Mal has plenty of hungry mouths to feed so nothing went to waste.  I think I would rather keep two big pinkies than a bunch of smaller ones if “push came to shove” though.

Am hoping for light winds on my return to the west this weekend but it doesn’t look good.

Cryovac

ok, my cryovac machine is just not cutting it anymore (was a cheaply off eBay). So what's a good machine at a reasonable price, say up to $300. Any info much appreciated.

cheers

nav markers

just to let everyone know might be coming up in the future there are 3 new navigation markers set in the rivermouth in kalbarri as of today. A new portside marker just west of the original one that now marks the edge of the slab that would slways catch people out coming back in near oyster reef. There is also a new starboard side marker north of the mouth but the placement of this marker looks bit too close to oyster reef especially on a big swell day so be carefull when coming around this one especially coming in to the mouth. There is also a north cardinal marker further out to the nw of the mouth which might confuse people so be careful. Use your head and commonsense with these new markers.

metro macks and tuna

im heading out in the boat on sunday. will there be any tuna or macks around. if there are how far out will i have to go to get them

Seabird fishing

Well got to get out yesterday with the bro inlaw to seabird with the dinghy, weather was perfect for a beach launch and retrieve having no swell and a off shore breeze. as we got out to our spot it started pretty sloppy and the deck hand had started to burley the water up with his beer and vodka from the night before lol. He toughed it out and the wind dropped rite off and it was magic a few drifts later and no fish I decided to throw a lure out the back and have a cruise around being a bit of bird activity in the area, within 2 minutes line was peeling off and I had my first ever spanish mack on the boat, I had put a bit of pressure on me deckie( u better not miss the gaff shot or u Goin in also) but he done me proud a few high 5's and woohooo's later we got the lure back in but nothing else. It was great to get one off my bucket list and fishing local instead of thinking I have to wait another year to get to shark bay to get one so all in all great day I won't forget for a while.

Heading Out Tomorrow

Heading out from Woodman Point tomorrow am - any suggestions?

Recfishwest FAD

BOAT COLLAR.

Hi all. Thought I would share this with fellow FW members, especially tinny owners. A few months ago I came across the website for Kaptens boat collar in Queensland. After checking into it I forked out the cash and ordered one for my 4.2 mtr stacer. Once I got my head around the fact that I had to drill a shitload of holes in a perfectly good hull, I got to work and fitted it. The finished result isn't pretty but after three trips out in it I am amazed at what it has done for my boat. The first big plus is that it provides level floatation when fully swamped, also it remains stable when swamped as the flotation is well outside the centreline of the boat. ( haven't tested this yet :)
The fist thing that I did noticed was getting up on the plane, the collar acts as a huge chine and it takes half the power and speed to get it up and going. The next thing was how dry I was, I estimate it cuts out 90% of spray, even with wind chop side on. The ride is now incredibly smooth and I use much less power to do the same speeds. The most amazing thing was coming back in with a following swell and not have to worry about broaching or nose diving down the face of a wave, this thing just tracked arrow straight and the faster I went the better it performed. So far I am more than impressed with it, the only thing I have a slight concern over is its longevity as it is basically marine grade foam however I have contacted owners who have had one fitted for 3 years and it is still going well so fingers crossed. I've planned a trip to Kalbarri in a few weeks so that should test it out.

cheers.

Canoe, Kayak needed !?!

canoe, kayak needed please to kayak baits and fish off???

locating the wrong places to drill?

Hey. I want to mount a berley bucket onto the transom. what I don't want to do is drill mounting holes through the transom only to find them right next to a stringer without enough room to fit a washer and nut and be left with an unnecessary hole to fill / repair. any tricks of the trade to knowing there is enough clearance to drill when access to the inside is purely by feel though a porthole hatch and not visual?

bulk spool braid

 Hi All,

Would any one have any suggestions on best place and type of braid bulk spools. I have got 3-4 reels (Talica12, Sustain 6000, Stradic 5000, Stella 10000) to spool for Exmouth and wouldn't mind having some left over. As this is not an exercise I would like to do again I was hopeful others may share some advice.

For the heavier stuff I'm currently looking at 1800m saltiga boat braid pe4 55lb or pe3 40lb. (About $300 delivered)

Then for lighter stuff maybe 500m spools of fins about ($70)

Best value for money would be best, I have spooled a couple of reels with varivas 10x10 of late but can't afford that path after losing 200m of pe6 on a sambo charter.

Cheers

Folks

Shimano Twinpower SWA Sale!

 Hey everyone,

The boss has given the OK to the following prices on the Shimano Twinpower SWA reels.

We currently have the 5000 and the 10000 in limited stock, and this pricing won't be repeated as this series is no longer in production.

As many know, these reels are based on the same platform as the 2008 SWA stellas, so they are an incredibly durable unit.

10000 SW  $599

5000 SW    $549

These prices wil remain available to our fishwrecked members until all stock has cleared.

Thanks and regards,

Todd

so i made a mistake - ouch! #needsnewpropsnrudders

In an age of blaming someone/something else for ones mistakes - i will admit this to be my fault- took a wrong path through to Thomsons bay going around Bathurst point - have snuck through there many a time without issue - this time we ate some reef

thats my summer done - got home on one engine with no steering (we had a friendly escort to assist if required) and slept onboard overnight until the lift out in the morning - nothing like the sound of bilges pumps running all night to keep you up !

Savage 3d Squid Jigs

Just wondering if anyone has bought one of these and given it a crack.

Was thinking of getting one to try in Perth.

Jurien Bay/Sandy Cape fishing tips please?

 G'day all,

Heading up to Sandy Cape just past Jurien in the coming weeks and I'm still pretty green when it comes to fishing. I'm just chasing advice anyone can offer on what I can expect to catch (if I manage anything), what bait/rigs etc to use, and any general tips for fishing off the beach.

Cheers

undersize fish at markets

i was at carosel today and i came across a small fish market, being a keen fisho i had to go and have a look. i counted 13 different species of undersize fish. i was just wondering if these small fish markets are allowed to take undersize fish to sell to the public. and people wonder why fish levels are dropping in the ocean i think people need to do something a bit extra to stop people from taking undersize.

Mulloway Run

Went for a flick in the Swan off a mates boat at night. Caught some tailor, decided to put a livey down on a pair of snelled hooks (can't remember size #) on about 70cms of ~ 50lb leader, followed by a medium swivel and a ~80ml long snapper sinker (only sinker I really had , unprepared).

Got a run about 20 - 30 mins later, which took a bit of line and the head from my chunky chopper. The head was ripped off clean, and we had no more luck that way for the night. I'm trying to work out how I could improve my setup to further my chances. Cheers.
